When I was in middle school, there was an ongoing compe on among the students: Who was the most athle c? Who was the smartest? Who was the most a rac ve? There was one area, however, where there was no compe on. It was se led. And the “champion” was me. I was the class clown.

For me, class me was show me. Any me a teacher would pause, I was ready to pounce with some obnoxious comment, with the hope that I could get a laugh from my classmates. A er all, what was the alterna ve? Quietly si ng through another 43 minutes of learning to diagram a sentence? C’mon.

I know my teachers didn’t see it my way. I spent plenty of me si ng in the hallway “thinking about what I had done,” and some mes it seemed I spent as much me in the principal’s offi ce as in class. Yes, I suppose I should feel awful about many of my an cs, but for the most part, I’m good with the status I managed to a ain. A er all, anyone who has ever seen me dribble a basketball knows I could never have stood out as an athlete.

So it was quite the adjustment 14 years ago when Anne Stein asked me to teach 7th grade Hebrew here at

Etz Chaim. One of my fi rst thoughts was how I would handle any class clown. Would I send them out into the hall? To the principal? It should come as no surprise that, from me to me, one of our 7th graders shouts out some wisecrack in class when I, as the teacher, would rather they sit quietly. And, yes, some of my students have had a few minutes to see what’s happening in the hall or to visit with the Educator.

But no student in my class has ever a ained the tle of “class clown.” In my classroom, that tle will always be reserved for me.

OSRUI receives hundreds of pieces of mail each day: from huge packages to ny envelopes, and some stranger items like piñatas and soccer balls. I have experienced (and loved!) mail at camp as a younger sister, a camper and an Avodahnik.

When my brother started camp in third grade, I loved seeing his le ers home. I saw him as an adult, out to see the world from a new perspec ve in this exo c land called Oconomowoc. At age 4, I already couldn’t wait to call myself a camper, but I had to wait pa ently, seeing OSRUI mostly through le ers from my brother.

Finally, the me came when I could go to Kallah, the youngest unit at camp. I was apprehensive yet

excited about making this place I hardly knew my home for two weeks. And I was thrilled to think of my parents opening mail from me. I wrote home daily, telling accounts of what it was like to be a young woman/third-grader at camp. One of my favorite things to write about was the food. For several days, I became obsessed with camp’s tuna salad and would write my parents each day to tell them how many scoops of tuna I had eaten at lunch.

As I grew up, my le ers home from camp became even more sophis cated than my tuna salad le ers from Kallah. As a Tzofi m camper, I wrote about the new experience of living in a tent. In Moshavah, I wrote home about the incredible nature we saw on trips, including waterfalls and purple rocks in Devil’s Lake. And in Chalutzim, I wrote home about the rewarding experience of learning Hebrew with my friends. Receiving a package at camp would truly make my day, especially when contraband candy was hidden in shampoo bo les or ssue boxes. (Remember that class clown from the earlier ar cle - he was also a good smuggler!) No ma er the unit, le ers were a staple of my me at camp.

This past summer, I par cipated in Avodah, OSRUI’s work-study program. I had many fun jobs, including washing dishes and plunging toilets, but my favorite job was sor ng mail in the offi ce. The offi ce fl oods with packages, le ers and bunk notes each day, all of which gets sorted and delivered to the campers. What is most exci ng to me, however, is not the sheer quan ty of packages that are sent to camp, but rather the joy that each piece of mail can bring. Sor ng the mail was more rewarding than I an cipated because, a er hours of sor ng, we got to deliver the packages to each unit. Happy campers smiled and waved at us and we felt like “Santa” of Jewish summer camp, delivering love from home.

In our fast-paced world, where most of the snail mail we see is junk, it is truly awesome to see the power of a handwri en le er. From many perspec ves, OSRUI mail has delighted me with loving notes and the hope for hidden candy.

Now is the me to Register for OSRUI www.osrui.org 4

It is hard for me to describe what an incredible impact the caring commi ee has had on me and my family. As many of you may understand, I grew up as a ‘high holiday Jew’, having only gone to temple for the most important holidays of the year. It was a conserva ve congrega on and as far as I can remember, the only reason we went is because that was where my grandparents went before they moved away. So I clearly didn’t have much of a connec on with that community. Fast forward many years and I fi nd myself at a temple on a regular basis with my interfaith family where we always feel so welcome.

But this year we experienced a drama c change as I recently lost my mom. As many of you know, the loss of a parent is one of the hardest things we experience in life. My sister and I, in par cular, experienced a roller coaster of emo ons, o en feeling like we were unable to move forward, like a deer in headlights. Along comes Rabbi

Cosnowsky and the Caring Commi ee swooping in and carrying us through this ordeal. As I write this, I am s ll astounded at how Marla Friedman, Gail Farr, Paul Heinz, Barry Fidlow…so many caring souls, just took over every detail of the planning, organizing and execu ng of the memorial service and Shiva. In fact, this wasn’t the fi rst me they came to our rescue. When mom was told she had to have radia on, they scheduled treatments for 5 days a week for 6 weeks. My sister and I could not fi gure out how we were going to manage to get her there on our own. The request went out to the commi ee to drive mom for a few of the days and before I knew it, every day on the schedule was covered.

I have never been a part of a community like the one here at Etz Chaim. There are so many kind, helpful, warm and caring individuals. And in par cular, the Caring Commi ee - this gentle, quiet group of people that seem content to remain in the background un l the next me they are called upon. Well I need you to know that they are a spectacular representa on of what we stand for and I could not be more proud or grateful. Thank you, thank you to every member of the Caring Commi ee, for taking us under your wing and making us feel secure enough to keep moving forward.

The Etz Chaim Caring Commi ee enables members of our congrega on to reach out and care for one another. Each of you can experience the mitzvah

of kkun olam, repairing the world, by helping a congregant in mes of need. We are an unusual commi ee, in that, to be a “member”, you only need to be a member of Etz Chaim. Because needs are sporadic, the commi ee does not hold regular mee ngs, but calls on volunteers as needed.

Communicate with us. If you, or a congregant you know, could benefi t from our services, or, if you’d like more informa on on how you can help, please contact the offi ce.

The Hebrew month of Elul, in which Religious School usually begins, is the month prior to our High Holydays. We are reading the end of the Book of Deuteronomy, which is a recap of all the laws, rules and lessons we have read in the fi rst four Books. Moses wants to make sure the people know what is expected of them when they enter the promised land as he will not be with them. It is the me of the Jewish year and Jewish month we use to refl ect on our own lives, all we have gained and all we have lost. It is also me to be grateful for all we have, for all we have learned and for all those in our lives who have brought us meaningful and purpose.

A Story…..“God never gives; God only lends.”

Rabbi Morris Joseph was a rabbi in London and Liverpool during the late-1800s and early-1900s. Contempla ng the impact of loss and grief in life, he wrote the following:

“It is not God’s part to spare us suff ering … but to help us bear it. If the visita on we dread fi nds us … then we do right to ask for the strength that will uphold us under the load, for the insight that reveals the wisdom in it, for the dynamic power that will transform it into blessing.”

“Something precious is taken from us and we think of it as something we have lost, instead of something we have had. We remember how empty our lives are now, and tend to forget how full and rich they were before; we forget the many days and years of happiness we lived when the one we love was s ll with us. We thank God for our treasures when we have them, but cease giving thanks when they are fl ed.”

“But God never gives; God only lends.”

“So instead of murmuring because our precious things have been taken from us, let us be grateful to God for having lent them to us. Let us count the past happy days not as loss, but as gain. We have had them; and now that they are ended, let us turn the loss to glorious gain – the gain that comes with new courage, with nobler tasks, with a wider outlook on life and duty.”

As we embark on a new year of Religious School it is exci ng and energizing to know how hard our faculty has worked this summer to plan programs, create new curriculum ideas and to make sure each of our students gets the best Jewish educa on has to off er. In addi on to celebra ng our new Senior Rabbi, the Bible Players Theater Group was with us on our fi rst day to challenge us through their theatrical gi s about Bible and values. Each grade was asked to decide which Jewish value is most important to them and to decide on a mitzvah project to demonstrate that value.

We are also grateful to all the volunteers we have this year and appreciate the eff orts of our Brotherhood who provided a great picnic lunch following religious school on our fi rst day.

May this year bring us much learning and growing. Shana Tova.

The Jewish War Veterans - Howard Goldstein

The Jewish War Veterans Post at Congrega on Etz Chaim arose as a result of discussions at the Connec ons Commi ee. The commi ee was looking for ways to engage members and to a ract non-members and it was suggested we start a veterans group. A er iden fying a number of vets, we held our fi rst mee ng - there were three of us there.

During the forma ve stages, some people ques oned the idea of joining a veterans group because they thought it was another subcommi ee of the Congrega on. Once people realized that JWV is a na onal organiza on focused on telling the Jewish military story, they perked up. Over a six month period, our small group con nued discussions and outreach about forming a Post. Other members of our Congrega on joined up. A er the Congrega on live-streamed a service for a blessing of Jewish vets, we began a rac ng veterans who were not members of our congrega on. We held our fi rst informal mee ng as JWV in November 2014 with 12 charter members. We obtained our Charter from the Na onal Headquarters in February 2015 and since that me have grown to 23 members.

Members represent all branches of the service and include WWII, Korea War, The Vietnam Era, Vietnam War and Afghanistan/Iraq war vets.

Since its incep on, the Post has been working with other Illinois Posts, conduc ng Memorial Day services at Oak Ridge Jewish Cemetery in Hillside and Shalom Cemetery in Skokie.

We have partnered with the Etz Chaim educator to work with the 9th Grade class to discuss what it is like being in the military and, on Veterans Day, went with students and their teachers to Oak Ridge Cemetery to place American fl ags on the graves of fallen Veterans. We developed a proposal to expand our classroom work to the 8th and 10th graders.

Special guest speakers have included representa ves from the Pritzker Military Museum and Library and Journey Care regarding hospice and pallia ve care programs focused specifi cally on Veterans needs. At each mee ng we are now hearing book reviews from one of the members regarding a military book they have read.

We have created our own website, www.jwvpost54.org, to keep Post members and others informed as to what is happening with the Post and veterans issues.

Post members are ac ve outside Etz Chaim volunteering at the Hines VA Hospital food pantry; represen ng the Jewish War Veterans on the DuPage County Veterans Assistance Council; holding a "Por llos Party" for veterans living at the Residen al Care Facility at Hines and more.

It has been an even ul me. We have a racted new members from within Etz Chaim as well as other congrega ons and unaffi liated Jews. We plan to work closely both within Etz Chaim and outside to make others aware of the role played by Jews in all confl icts. We have also begun working with other Posts to do outreach to schools and working on veterans issues that transcend religions.

If you are a veteran or know of someone who is and wants to join, please contact Howard Goldstein, Commander at [email protected]

Congrega on Etz Chaim and its members thank all of our veterans for their service.

Th e Rabbinic transition is complete! We have now successfully installed Rabbi Cosnowsky as the Senior Rabbi of our congregation.

Rabbinic installation is an American tradition - it was not practiced in Europe. Whereas American rabbis are given temporary contracts of anywhere from 1-5 years, European rabbis were given a K'tav Rabbanut, a life contract agreed upon and signed by the community elders. So, why in America do we practice this idea of Rabbinic Installation? I n s t a l l a t i o n is for kitchen appliances!

Th e answer may be that, in traditional communities, the Rabbi was seen as a form of King or Ruler. Whatever the

Rabbi decreed was the answer. In European communities, if you asked the Rabbi for a ruling and did not like the answer you got, you could not seek out another rabbi for a ‘better’ ruling. Whatever your rabbi said was the Law. So there was no point in installing a rabbi because everyone understood that he was the spiritual and religious authority in the land. His position was not questioned, there was no dispute. If there were such an aff ront, the off ender was put in his

place. Th e Rabbi was seen as the Mara de'atra, the master of the place. Men who were not rabbis were not considered intellectually or morally able to decide matters of Jewish law, Halacha. However, Conservative pulpit rabbis in the Conservative movement are still considered Mara de’atra.

Today, the position of rabbi in the Reform tradition is not binding. We are not a Halachic movement and do not have a Mara de'atra. As Rabbi Mordechai M. Kaplan said, ‘Tradition has a vote (a voice), not a veto.’ Although we don't always follow Jewish law, there is still a need for a rabbinic or spiritual advisor. Today in our community, people seek out the rabbis to answer diff erent matters of Jewish thought and practice and to have a sounding board to answer questions about today's world from a Jewish perspective. Even though people don't have to follow the rulings of the rabbi as they

did in days of old, there is still value and meaning in seeking out a rabbi's opinion and advice on matters ranging from what is okay to eat on Passover to how to ethically deal with family and business matters.

Th ere is, however, another reason for us to install a rabbi today. We hold a celebration to mark the passage of time, to show that change has occurred, and a new person is involved with shaping the policies of our congregation. Rabbis are community guides, here to teach and fulfi ll all of the roles of the rabbinic position. When we install a rabbi, it means that we support her (or him) as our new communal leader. Like any leader, we don't have to necessarily like or agree about everything, but we must still show respect and honor to the position. Th e teachings of the rabbi are derived from years of studying Torah and other great books of Judaism and, when we install the rabbi, we give honor to the power of the teachings of Torah.

We celebrate this season of rabbinic transition with joy and gladness. We enjoyed Rabbi Cosnowsky's celebration and are looking forward to installing our new Assistant Rabbi Frederick Kamil on Friday, January 6, 2017.

The designa on of “Millennial” is a broad term which does not s pulate an exact year one must be born in order to be classifi ed as such. These days, it is hard not to hear the mul tude of cri cisms of this new genera on. There is no doubt that I am, like the rest of my peers, a product of the hard work, sacrifi ce and accomplishments of the genera ons of great people who came before me. In many cases, they were groundbreakers and heroes, but humbly only view their ac ons in terms of merely trying (and in many cases struggling) to carry out their daily lives. They unselfi shly laid the groundwork for their off spring to carry the torch, with the goal of making a be er life for the future genera on. Thankfully, they succeeded.

With these big shoes to fi ll, the Millennials are living in a world which moves at a much faster pace, where the rules of family, sexual orienta on, gender, age, race, and even religion appear to be out the door. As an openly gay male, I am thankful in many ways to live in a society where I can be at peace with who I am, and also not have to fear that the world will hate me for it. On the same point, it’s probably easier to “out yourself” as a Jew today as opposed to 50 years ago.

So, why are aren’t more “young people” joining the temple already?

This is a ques on that gets asked a lot and, unfortunately, there is no one single reason. For the current genera on of young families, there is an increased pressure that their children need to be able to diff eren ate themselves from the crowd. Therefore, they may decide to enroll their kids in sports clinics, music classes, or language emersion, as opposed to Sunday school.

For others, money might also be a concern. In the past, as today, the reform Jewish people have consistently placed importance on being ci zens of United States of America, and integra ng into society. Values (in the sense of a belief system and placement of the hierarchy of importance) are diff erent today. Organized religion has a bad rep, and many feel liberated by not joining and instead using the money elsewhere.

The biggest dis nc on of Millennials compared with other preceding genera ons is the dras c diff erence in the way we interact and communicate. Although we speak the same language (some may argue this point), we cul vate our connec ons and community using computers and smart phones. When I came to Chicago, it was the internet that led me to Temple Shalom, and later to Etz Chaim a er moving to Darien. I didn’t grow up in a par cularly religious household, and was the only one of my siblings to a end religious school and become a Bar Mitzvah. I am a believer in God, but more importantly for me, the reason I joined Etz Chaim was to preserve my connec on with the past (my heritage), and apply the guidance to the current life I am leading. In addi on, being at temple helps to balance the virtual world of Facebook and emails with face-to-face interac on as we used to have in the past. As a newbie to the area, going to temple introduced me to friends who live nearby, and because I see them again and again every Friday night, we organically develop things in common.

Sure the membership dues are a chunk of change, but I look at it as mul faceted win-win. I a end as many religious services, events, and hangout me at temple as I want. This gives me the ability to connect with fellow members of the Jewish community, and have fun in the process. Etz Chaim off ers a ton of lessons and classes, many of which are led by external scholars. I can frequent all the classes I want and enrich my mind, and even challenge the presenter on point-of-view related topics. Lastly, the cornerstone of giving back to the community is important if you want to be considered an ac ve member of that community. Very reminiscent of the Minyan lesson from Rabbi Cosnowsky, if we combine our eff orts as a group to help the greater good, we can accomplish 10 mes more than when we all try to act on our own.

I am proud to be a member of Congrega on Etz Chaim, and I encourage all of the other snot-nosed kids that may s ll reek of pimple cream to consider how rewarding it can be to not only join, but ac vely par cipate. You get out what you put in, but I can confi rm from personal experience that the fruits are very rewarding.

From a Millennial - Ed Levy

Let us delve into the meanings of spirit, spiritual, and spirituality.

We all use these terms o en, and they can have a variety of defi ni ons. We might describe ourselves as feeling spiritual when we experience a signifi cant moment of religious expression or when we are in transcendent awe of nature or of an especially meaningful situa on.

In my Clinical Pastoral Educa on group, we use this word as our default descrip on of religious experience. I would say all of these usages can and do work, but something which always helps me is to look at the Hebrew word for this English one. What is the Hebrew word for the word “spirit”?

There are two Hebrew words associated with spirit. The fi rst is ruach which is introduced in the very fi rst chapter in Genesis where it says, “The spirit of G-d hovered over the face of the waters. (Gen:1:2)” The second is nefesh which is introduced in the second chapter of Genesis: “Then G-d formed Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed spirit into his nostrils. (Gen 2:7)” Both of these examples are very important as they are given to us, as readers of the Torah, right away. Nefesh, in par cular, seems to draw a connec on with air, either as breath or as wind.

In La n the word “spirit” also means breathing, or breath of life. In both La n and Hebrew, to be spiritual means to breathe and to be alive. However, to the Jews of the Bible, being alive meant more than just living. In many ways, Adam's world was created for progress. Each day in the story of crea on, the world gets be er and be er. Adam and Eve are there to ll the land, to feed themselves and their off spring. The breath of spirit is not just the breath of life, but also the will to elevate the world to a be er place. This meaning is clearly related to another word- inspire.

One of the best things we can do during this spiritual me is to take account of our lives, to breathe and contemplate, to consider where we need to go, to fi nd inspira on for ac on.

We are most spiritual when we are inspired and when that inspira on leads to ac on, just as a breath fi lls us up with oxygen and allows our bodies to func on in complex ways. As we enter the month of Elul and into the High Holiday season, we make an eff ort to feel spiritual. We aspire (another related word) to feel closer to the divine, closer to community, closer to our families, to draw in new breaths of inspira on. In this season, spirituality is about inspira on. During these upcoming High Holidays, let us take account of our lives and make changes which improve ourselves and our communi es for the future.

Let us be inspired to bring about good change in the world. When we do that, we are spiritual.

“What do YOU mean by spiritual?” “What do I mean by spiritual?”

Spirituality - Rabbi Kamil
