Etz Aviv’s Sweet Sixteen
Dinner Dance
From the President Dear Etz Aviv Family,
Here we are half way through the year and sum-
mer is here. Usually the summer months are a
time for slowing down but that is not the case with
Etz Aviv. We have so much going on. First there
was our Annual Picnic on June 26th at Marsha
and Mike Bloomfield’s which was so wonderful
except for a few raindrops.
Second, there is the Hadassah National Convention that is being held in
Atlanta, July 25-July 28. I hope many of you come and many have signed
up as volunteers, there is still time. By volunteering, you get to attend
many of the break out sessions being offered. There’s time for getting a
lot of useful information and also time to meet friends from other groups,
regions and states. Please try to make an effort to attend either a morn-
ing, afternoon, or evening session. Log into Hadassah.org.
In July, many members of the Board will be getting together to plan for the
second half of the year. At that time, we will start forming committees for
our “Sweet Sixteen” Dinner Dance Fundraiser. If you are interested in
helping, we need all the help we can get, so please contact me.
Most important will be the raffles and we urge all of you to help collect
items for our raffles. Many restaurants and shops have given us gift
cards, etc. in the past and we are hoping we can collect more than
enough to make our dance a financial success for Hadassah and all that it
does.
This summer, we will finalize plans for our September Opening Brunch
along with our Annual Gift Exchange Dinner in November. We hope to
reschedule our Chai Tea.
So you see, we are having a very busy summer. Our heads are spinning
with ideas and “nothing can slow us down”!
Have a great summer!!
B’Shalom!

Noontime Nosh Book Club
Our Noontime Nosh Book Club has been meeting, reading, discussing and noshing for 8+ years! We meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 10 AM at a member’s home, followed by lunch at a near-by restaurant, unless there is a conflict with a Jewish or secular holiday. We’ve had a wonderful response to 2016 meetings this year, have been pleased to welcome some new guests, and had to set up extra chairs to accommodate everyone!! And we have already collect-ed donations totaling $808 to support Hadassah! Thank you to Meredith Rubel who hosted our April get-together. Judy Bart led our discussion of Krisitn Hannah’s The Nightingale. All thumbs up! Todah rabah to Barbara Lewitt, our May host. She invited us to “eat in” and our “lunch money” was donated to Hadassah. The lunch was wonderful and followed a spirited discussion about Dean Koontz’s The Taking, facilitated by Linda Podrat. Judy Lebow hosted and facilitated The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant. The immigrant theme in the novel, and some treasured photos of Judy’s family, led to a discussion of the family backgrounds of many of our “noshers”. We always find out something interesting about each other! The following is a list of our meeting dates and “reads” for the rest of 2016. 07/05 The Lost Wife/Alyson Richman 08/02 Everything I Never Told You/Celeste Ng 09/06 Still Alice/Lisa Genova October: No meeting due to Jewish Holidays 11/01 All the Light We Cannot See/Anthony Doerr 12/06 The Art of Hearing Heartbeats/Jan-Philipp Sendker

Bethlehem Jogger Collapses; Saved with Hadassah High-Tech Equipment
When Osama Qassriwy heard that an Interfaith Mission sponsored by Hadassah was coming to Bethlehem to visit the Christian sites, he insisted on hosting them for a festive meal. Mr. Qassriwy wanted to show his appreciation for the Hadassah Medical Center saving his daughter, Sara, after she collapsed while jogging.
Telling the story of his daughter’s close encounter with death to the Mission participants, Mr. Qassriwy (also spelled al Katzroy) recalled how Sara’s organs were in great distress, brought on by extreme heatstroke. It was the intervention of Hadassah specialists that saved her life.
Enjoying the festive occasion with Sara and the Hadassah visitors was Prof. Rifaat Safadi, head of Hadassah’s Liver Unit and one of the physicians who treated Sara. “Sara’s condition was very grave,” he said. “When she came to Hadassah, her organs were about to fail.”
"It was very moving to experience the love and thankfulness expressed by our patient and to see this beautiful young woman get her life back," relates Julie Morris, who chaired the Mission.
The Intervention of Hadassah specialists: With her liver and kidneys shutting down, Bethlehemite Sara al Katzroy, age
18, seemed to be in need of an emergency transplant, but a Hadassah Medical Center multidisciplinary team saved her
without it. Although Sara had been a healthy student at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, she became dehydrated and collapsed while out for a run in Jericho, where she had been taking a course. She had already jogged 2.5 miles.
Initially, she was treated for severe heat stroke in Jericho, but when she didn't respond, an ambulance brought her to Hadassah Hospital-Ein Kerem. At Hadassah, Sara was diagnosed with multiple organ failure. "Because she had heat stroke, we thought there was a chance for her liver to begin functioning again,” explains Dr. Sigal Sviri-Saroussi, head of Hadassah’s internal medicine intensive care unit. “At the same time, we prepared for transplantation.”
Several years ago, Hadassah received a donation of a Molecular Adsorbent Recirculation System (MARS), which re-moves toxins and serves as an artificial liver support system. The director of Hadassah's Institute of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases, Prof. Ran Oren, was one of the first doctors in the world to pioneer the use of this machine.
Thanks to MARS and Hadassah’s medical team, which included Prof. Rifaat Safadi, head of the Liver Unit, and Prof. Michal Dranitzki Elhalel, head of the Nephrology Department, Sara is recovering well, having spent three weeks in Hadassah’s Intensive Care Unit.
"I was told I'd probably need physical therapy, but I refused,” Sara relates. I'm going to get up and go." Sarah will be
returning to Al-Quds University where she has been studying business administration, but now she wants to change her
career. She explains: "Before I collapsed, I wanted to be a detective, but now I want to be a nurse. The nurses who took
care of me are angels. I want to save lives. Whether Arabs or Jews, I don't differentiate. I want to save them all."
The deadline for the articles and Good and Welfare for the next newsletter
is September 30. The newsletter will be sent out in the middle of October. Send your articles to Barbara Lewitt at [email protected] and read
