The Golden Calf. A seemingly singular moment in time. If we look at Jewish history and Jewish practice, however, we see that this event created a ripple effect that we still feel today.

In the immediate aftermath of the Golden Calf the people were forced to drink water mixed with the remnants of the idol. Additionally, Moses gathered those loyal to Ha-shem and killed 3,000 sinners. Finally, Hashem brought a plague which eliminated the others who were guilty.

Moving forward this tragedy continues to be relevant, even to current Jewish observance. The date upon which this sin took place, the seventeenth of Tammuz, is today observed as a fast. The firstborn were stripped of some of their special privileges, and those honors were given to the tribe of Levi, who did not sin. The entire concept of prayer service, beginning with the Mishkan, progressing to the Beit Hamikdash, and continuing on to the modern-day synagogue, comes out of this incident. Imagine what Jewish life might have been if not for this misstep.

As we approach our own lives - religious, secular, and otherwise - we must realize that nothing we do exists in a vacuum. Every deed has consequences. May we always do our best to achieve the greatest results possible.

Rabbi Evan B. Rubin

ALL ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES

FROM THE RABBI

What is new at Congregation Etz Chayim? Our Program Committee is working to develop a broad range of programming for the coming year. Based on the interests projected in our Congregational Survey, the committee will explore educational, social,

and outreach programs. They have already put into place a series of lessons conducted by one our favorite teachers, Aviva Panush. Details will be forthcoming.

In the same vein, our Long-Range Planning Committee continues to explore ideas that will serve our syna-gogue as we transform to meet the needs and interests of our diminishing membership, extracted from the survey, while simultaneously maintaining the traditions consistent with Orthodox Judaism. Change is not always easy, but the committee works hard to find the right balance to keep the majority of our members involved, engaged, and enlightened.

Unfortunately, concern about security is always on the front burner. Fortunately, we have been able to submit a second grant application to FEMA for financial aid to cover our security needs. I wish to thank Bob Ehmann, chair of the Security Committee who has been exploring various options for securing extra security for our building. Our bookkeeper, Sandy Marcus, has spent many of her hours researching, collating infor-mation, and making telephone calls to ensure that our grant application was perfect. The government works slowly, but we are told that we will know by August if our grant request was accepted.

In conclusion, I am pleased to inform you that our congregation has been invited to attend the Ramadan Iftar Dinner to be held at Temple Shomer Emunim on Sunday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. As we gather to support our friends in the spirit of friendship and peace, we look forward to your participation. This activity is endorsed by all three synagogues as well as the Jewish Federation and Foundation. I am hopeful that you will choose to join us. For questions, please contact Zaheer at [email protected].

With warm wishes for a wonderful spring and summer, Bob Berkowitz

Our summer months continue to be busy with social, religious and educational programs. Please don’t hesitate to call the shul office if you need a ride to a program. I will be happy to organize your ride, so that you are able to come to the program.

I would like to thank a group of special women who meet monthly and also dedicate personal time at home to knit shawls for the “Baskets of Care”. These woman include Elsa Leveton, Margie Siegel, Katie Gale, Shira Betsalel , Alice Applebaum, Betty Applebaum, Kerry Rubin, & Barb Rubin. This Gemilut Hasadim - act of lovingkindness - comes from your heart and everyone from Etz Chayim is so proud!

Our next Art Museum tour is Thursday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. Since the summer daylight hours are longer, this will be a perfect evening activity.

I am delighted to announce that Aviva Panush will be returning to lead a learning session on Thursday, June 13 at 7:00 pm. Aviva brings meaningful insights to her sessions and allows for interesting and interactive discussions.

Saturday, June 22 is our Birthday/Anniversary Shabbat Kiddush luncheon. During our May Birthday/Anniversary Shabbat, we had 40 friends and family come together to honor those celebrating. It really is wonderful to all join to-gether on Shabbat.

Itzhak Perlman will be coming to perform with the Toledo Symphony at the Peristyle on Tuesday, November 12. This will be his fifth appearance with the symphony and his first in 14 years. His program will feature music from film composer John Williams. Our group tickets are discounted to $55.20 each. We will be sitting in Section D on the Main Floor. Call the shul to make your reservation and place at least a $10.00 per person deposit for each ticket. Final payment will be due Friday, October 4.

July will also be a busy month. Who likes to cook and share their recipes? We are planning a cooking demonstration for Monday, July 22. This demonstration will be different than what we have had in the past. We are looking for 3 peo-ple who would like to make a different course for lunch. Then the recipes will be shared and the lunch will be enjoyed by all in attendance. Those interested in cooking and sharing can call the shul .

If anyone has any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to call me 419-360-2492 or email me at [email protected].

Warm thoughts, Nancy Jacobson, Program Director

Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love by Dani Shapiro

Cathy Sperling will be the discussion leader.

In the spring of 2016, through a genealogy website to which she had whimsically submitted her DNA, Dani Shapiro received the astonishing news that her beloved deceased father was not her biological father. Over the course of a single day, her entire history—the life she had lived—crumbled beneath her. In just a few hours of Internet sleuthing, she was able to piece together the story of her conception and, remarkably, find a You Tube video of her biological father—his face and mannerisms eerily similar to her own. Dani Shapiro’s memoir unfolds at a breakneck pace—part mystery, part real-time investigation, part rumination on the ineffable combination of memory, history, biology, and experience that makes us who we are. A haunting interrogation of the meaning of kinship and identity, written with stunning intensity and precision—Dani Shapiro’s most intimate and compelling work yet.

The book is available at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library and its affiliates on Search Ohio, through Amazon.com, and Barnes & Noble.

Remembering our Loved Ones…

With the conclusion of the Shavuot holiday, we enter into the warm summer months. We remember the memories of our dear family members and friends as they continue to give us feelings of warmth, love, and continuity. Their presence is forever felt when we sift through those memories...growing up years, holidays, life-cycle events, picnics, ice-cream cones-even sorrowful times that were shared. There is little, if anything, that surpasses the warm embrace of a dear family member or friend.

Today our preparations begin for our Etz Chayim Yizkor Book, In Loving Memory. Again, shul members as well as members of the community will be invited to memorialize loved ones in this year’s book. Letters and forms will soon be in the mail. Additionally, a form is included in this bulletin. Once more, we will continue our tradition of dedicating the book in honor of or in memory of someone special. We thank all the wonderful families and individuals who have dedicated past Yizkor Books in honor of or in memory of their loved ones: 2001/2002 Bee & Willie Phillips were honored by their children and grandchildren in our founding Yizkor Book. 2002/2003 The memory of Sheldon Schachner was honored by his wife Gretchen and their children. 2003/2004 George Davidson honored the memory of his beloved wife, Eva, and his family members. 2004/2005 Hy & Toby Wittenberg were honored and memorialized by the families of Judge Charles Wittenberg and Joe Wittenberg. 2005/2006 The families of William Stein and Sam Stein memorialized their parents, Leonard & Esther Stein, their grandparents, Samuel & Ida Stein and Abe & Fannie Frank, as well as brother Don Stein. 2006/2007 The Cohen family honored their beloved parents, Dora & Louis Cohen, as well as their brother, Murray. 2007/2008 Dr. Paul & Linda Franklin honored their parents, Louis & Dorothy Franklin and Sam & Beldina Simon. 2008/2009 The children and grandchildren of Charles Fleishman honored his memory. 2009/2010 Lenny Rosenberg honored the memory of his beloved parents, Sam and Jean Rosenberg, and his dear brother, Murry. 2010/2011 The family of Jay Glassman honored the memory of their beloved father and grandfather. 2011/2012 The family of Toby & Kalman Aharoni paid tribute to their parents and grandparents. 2012/2013 The children of Harry & Anne Lublin honored the memory of their parents. 2013/2014 Charles & Phyllis Wittenberg and Nancy Katz honored the memory of their parents, Betty & Seymour Forman. 2014/2015 The children of Dr. Donald Steinberg honored Dr. Steinberg’s memory. 2015/2016 The Michael Rosenberg family memorialized their family’s religious and cultural heritage. 2016/2017 Elsa & Allen Leveton, along with Rosalie Dior & family and Heidi Hirsch & family honored the memory of their beloved Mollie & Isaac Leveton, Shirley & Jack Hes, and Philip and Morton Leveton. 2017/2018 Sandy & Steve Marcus honored the memory of their parents, Deborah & Phillip Marcus and Lillian & Max Markman, and beloved brother Jeffrey Markman. 2018/2019 Barbara Rubin, Rabbi Evan & Kerry Rubin, Deidre Goebel, and Dr. Robert & Rabbi Sarah Rubin honored the memory of their beloved Dr. Marvin Rubin.
