From Oct. 1 through March31, MEOC’s EFF assisted 1,146emergency situations. MEOCspent $182,262.28 in helping keepolder citizens warm, safe andsecure in their homes.

MEOC notes that older peoplestruggling to pay for the barenecessities on small retirementchecks have a very difficult timecoping with increased heatingfuel prices. Often, the older per-son has high prescription drugand health care expenses not cov-ered by a third party. A death or

illness in the family can alsocause an emergency financial sit-uation. Day-to-day living expens-es are more than his or hermonthly check can cover; incomeis simply too small and stretchedtoo thin. Many older persons areraising grandchildren.

Organizations and businessesare encouraged to become com-munity sponsors; contributors of$5,000 or more will have theirname and logo printed on theback of the MEOC Walkathon T-shirts, with more than 450 in cir-culation in the community, andthey will be linked on MEOC’swebsite, receive press coveragein all media and receive freeadvertising on MEOC buses.
