WISE — The Gate City BlueDevils relied on solid shootingfrom the outside and a stronginside presence from AndyArnold Saturday to secure itsfirst trip to the Virginia HighSchool League’s Group ADivision 2 boys state basketballsemifinals.

Arnold scored 22 points andpulled down 11 rebounds to helpguide the Blue Devils to a 64-52win over the Graham G-Men inthe D2 state quarterfinals atUVa-Wise’s David PriorConvocation Center.

With the win, the Blue Devils

advanced to the Division 2 statesemifinals at the VirginiaCommonwealth UniversitySiegel Center. Gate City isscheduled to play WilliamMonroe on Thursday at 9 p.m.

While Arnold controlled theinside for Gate City (23-5), theBlue Devils also got good out-side play from Luke Ervin andNick Bowen.

Ervin finished with 14 points, including six from two 3-point-ers. Bowen connected on three3-point shots and finished with12 points on the night for theBlue Devils, while DylanJenkins dished out 10 assists.

“We were struggling a littleand Nick hit those two back-to-

back and that really helped ussome,” said Gate City coachScott Vermillion.

Bowen’s two 3-pointers camein the third quarter to build a39-26 lead for Gate City withjust over two minutes to play inthe game.

Graham (17-10) narrowedthe lead to 45-35 by the end ofthe third quarter, thanks in bigpart to the play of sophomoreTony Hood.

The Graham sophomoreignited the scoreboard in thesecond half on the way to finish-ing with a game-high 28 points.

Hood was a key concern forthe Blue Devils, particularly inthe second half. But, Vermillion

said Gate City also created con-cerns for the G-Men, particular-ly with the play of Arnold inside.

“The game plan didn’t playout as well as would have liked,”said Vermillion. “But, overall, Ithought we played well and Ithink Andy made it difficult forthem to run their offense.”

Hood scored 10 of his pointsin the fourth quarter.

His final 3-pointer of five onthe day came with 5:33 to play inthe contest. The trey cut theGate City lead to 50-44.

That was as close as Grahamcould get in the contest.

Gate City responded on theother end of the floor withArnold getting a basket under-

neath and then adding a freethrow to put the Blue Devils up53-44.

Graham cut the lead to sevenpoints twice, but the Blue Devilscontinue to answer the G-Menbasket for basket.

Two free throws fromGraham’s Hood cut the GateCity lead to 58-50 with 1:09 toplay in the game. But a slam onthe other end of the floor fromArnold eight seconds latererased any doubt of the game’sfinal outcome.

In addition to Hood’s 28points, Colby Hill finished thecontest with 10 points, eightrebounds and six assists forGraham. u

SALEM — Castlewood’s CaitlynFleming picked a great time to havethe best game of her career.

The sophomore post playerscored 22 points and pulled down 20rebounds — both career highs — tolead the Lady Blue Devils to a 52-47win over the Covington LadyCougars in the Virginia High SchoolLeague’s Group A Division 1 statequarterfinals at the Salem CivicCenter.

With the win, the Lady BlueDevils (21-6) advance to the D1 statesemifinals. Castlewood will take onEast Rockingham (27-1) Thursday at11 a.m. in the VirginiaCommonwealth University SiegelCenter in Richmond.

The trip to the state final four forCastlewood is the first state semifi-nal appearance since 1987.

While Fleming enjoyed openshots off the glass for most of thegame, the Lady Blue Devil defenseshut down Covington’s 5-11Leteashai Clarke. The much-herald-ed post player did not score in thecontest for the Lady Cougars (22-5),while pulling down seven rebounds.

Only one of her rebounds came onthe offensive boards for Covington.

Clarke got in foul trouble early inthe game and fouled out in the thirdquarter of the contest.

One major hindrance to Clarkewas the triangle-and-two defenseemployed by Castlewood coachBarry Ruff.

“We were going to live or die bythat triangle-and-two,” said Ruff.“We worked hard on that defense totry to stop her. “We were going toplay the triangle-and-two and wewere going to play it for four quar-ters.”

When Clarke left the gamebecause of foul trouble, Castlewoodemployed a double post offensiveattack that put Fleming andMcKinley Isaacs down low under thebasket.

“They had to account for Caitlyn, but they also had to account forIsaacs,” said Ruff. “When (Clarke)fouled out we were able to run thedouble posts and they couldn’t matchup with us.”

Fleming also got into some foultrouble midway through the thirdquarter when she picked up herfourth foul at the 3:55 mark of theperiod.

She watched the rest of the quar-ter from the bench, but Castlewooddid not miss a beat. That came as nosurprise to Fleming.

“Everybody on our team has tal-ent as individuals and we just allcome together as a team,” she said.“I wasn’t too worried about the othergirls stepping up because that’s whatthey’ve done all year.”

Ruff was also not surprised thathis players stepped up whenFleming went to the bench with foultrouble.

“I’ve coach a lot of good teamsand I’ve coached a lot of good play-ers, but I’ve never coached a teamlike this group of girls before. I’venever seen a bunch of girls that areall about team and all about winningtogether.

“They don’t care who scores thepoints or who gets in the paper. Theyjust want to win and win as a team,”said Ruff.

The Castlewood coach said histeam has been focused on improvingeach game and proving doubterswrong.

“We’re a young team. We don’thave a single senior on this team,”Ruff remarked. “The (Castlewood)boys team gets a lot of recognitionfrom the media in SouthwestVirginia. And these girls wantedsome of their own and they got ittonight. They earned it tonight.”

In addition to Fleming’s big night,Korey Purtee scored eight pointsand pulled down 13 rebounds for theLady Blue Devils, while HaleyCrabtree added eight points.

Sa’Mone Moore led a trio of dou-ble-figure scorers for Covington with17 points and eight rebounds, whileAutumn Phillips and Bailey Halleach scored 13 points for the LadyCougars. u

WISE — It was a struggle fromthe outset and it never got any bet-ter for the Castlewood boys.

On Saturday afternoon at UVa-Wise’s David Pryor ConvocationCenter, the Blue Devils seasonended with a 53-34 loss to ParryMcCluer in the Virginia HighSchool League Group A Division 1state quarterfinals.

With the win Parry McClueradvanced to the D1 state semifinals. The Fighting Blues will face WestPoint at 5 p.m. Thursday at VirginiaCommonwealth University’s SiegelCenter in Richmond.

No doubt, Parry McCluer had anoutstanding team, but there is alsono doubt that Castlewood (19-7)didn’t play very well.

The Blue Devils could have beenshell shocked on the “big stage” orhurt by a lightning quick 2-3 zoneemployed by the Fighting Bluesthat allowed Castlewood very fewopen looks throughout the contest.

“It was a bad day to have a badshooting day,” commentedCastlewood coach Doug Campbell.“We didn’t shoot the ball well at all.

“Give Parry McCluer a lot ofcredit. They were aggressive, theycame out and smacked us in themouth right off the bat. They gotafter us, we didn’t get the wide openlooks and we backed off a little.”

Parry McCluer (21-6) led 13-3after eight minutes and 33-13 athalftime. Game over. The Blue’sused a 2-3 zone that a lot of teamsare passive in.

That wasn’t the case with ParryMcCluer. They had extreme pres-sure, used quick hands to challengeevery pass and seemed to stay inthe passing lanes.

Castlewood, which had been out-standing offensively most of theseason, couldn’t get anything con-sistent established throughout thegame.

Through their first 25 games, theBlue Devils averaged 57 points agame with a season-high 82 pointsagainst Rye Cove.

The Blue Devils made only 10field goals against Parry McCluer.

“We changed our defense lastweek, it was different than we hadplayed on Saturday when theyscouted us,” Parry McCluer coach

Nelson Fox said. “We applied morepressure. We only had six turnoversat half and getting up by 20 washuge, because we knew Castlewoodhas a very good team and was well-coached.”

The Blue Devils finished with 19turnovers.

They were 2-of-21 beyond thearc, making only 24 percent of their3-pointers.

Castlewood was not much betterfrom inside. They only made 26percent of their shots in the game.

The Blues outscored Castlewood26-14 in the paint and had 20 pointsoff turnovers to only 10 for the BlueDevils.

“We knew they liked to go back-door all night long,” said Fox whopicked up his 538th career victorywith the win. “We wanted to takethat away, and they didn’t connecton the 3-pointers. I thought thathurt them a great deal.”

Junior Josh Perry led theFighting Blues with a double-dou-ble.

Perry totaled 15 points andgrabbed 10 rebounds. Tanner Fix(11) and Charlie Fitzgerald (12)were also in double figures in thescoring category.

Tyler Austin had 12 points topace the Blue Devils and ReidEdmonds added 10 points. u

BLACKSBURG (AP) — Virginia Techguard Erick Green stood at the free-throw line with 9 seconds remaining inthe Hokies’ game against Clemson, get-ting ready to seal the game and needingto make both free throws to record hisfourth game of 30 points or more thisseason.

He missed the first attempt and madethe second, still sealing the game, butcoming up short of 30.

“Trust me, I’m definitely going tohear about this,” Green said. “I’m goingto hear about this from my family. They’re going to give me a hard time.”

That was about the only thing he didwrong, as he scored 29 points in his finalhome game, lifting the Hokies to a 69-61victory over the Tigers on Saturday.

Virginia Tech (13-16, 4-12 AtlanticCoast Conference) had lost 10 of its pre-vious 11 games, but the Hokies are nowtied with Boston College for last place inthe ACC standings. The Hokies now needa win in either of their final two regular-season games and losses by BC to avoidthe No. 12 seed in the ACC Tournament.BC holds the tiebreaker.

“This one (the win) was really impor-tant,” Green said. “I told the guys beforethe game that this was the one thing Ireally wanted. I couldn’t ask for anything

else, just to go out with a win. I startedmy career here with a win, and I wantedto go out with a win walking out _ and Idid that.”

Green scored 17 points in the firsthalf, with 9 of those coming on a 20-8half-ending run that gave the Hokies a36-25 lead. Virginia Tech then took a 15-point lead in the second half on two freethrows by Green with 17:26 remainingand appeared to be in control.

But Clemson (13-15, 5-11) rallied andcut the deficit to 64-61 on two free throwsby Adonis Filer with 1:20 remaining. TheTigers had a chance to get closer.Following a turnover, the Hokies fouledFiler, but he missed two free throws with35.2 seconds remaining. Virginia Tech’sC.J. Barksdale was fouled on therebound with 33.6 seconds left and madeboth free throws to give the Hokies a 66-61 lead.

Clemson’s Jordan Roper then misseda 3-pointer with 25 seconds to go, andBarksdale was fouled again after grab-bing the rebound. He made both freethrows with 23.4 seconds remaining togive the Hokies a 68-61 advantage andseal the victory.

“It was kind of the story of our sea-son,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell said.“We probably had just four or five justbad offensive possessions that were insome critical areas where you just haveto be better. I think our young guards

sometimes just do some silly things.Obviously, we fouled a couple times. We’d guard them for a while and thenjust foul them. We were just a little tooeager and not disciplined enough to fin-ish it off.”

Clemson fouled Green with 9 secondsleft, and Green made the one free throwto account for the final margin. VirginiaTech coach James Johnson then pulledhim out of the game, and the senior fromWinchester, Va., received a standing ova-tion.

“I anticipated him coming out andhaving a big game tonight, to be honestwith you,” Johnson said. “Just to havewatched and been around him for so longand watch him play his last game inCassell (Coliseum), that was emotional.

“He goes from two points a game as afreshman to leading the nation in scor-ing. That shows what hard work can dofor you, and that’s how we want to buildthis program and that’s the type of kids Iwant to get in the program.”

Green, who came into the game as thenation’s leading scorer at 24.9 points pergame, hit 8 of 12 from the floor, including5 of 7 from beyond the arc. He also hit 8of 10 from the free-throw line. He scored20 points or more for the 26th time in 29games this season

Barksdale finished with 14 points forthe Hokies, and Robert Brown added 13.The two of them combined to hit 10 of 15

from the floor, and Virginia Tech shot54.8 percent (23 of 42) from the floor _ itsbest performance in an ACC game thisseason.

Devin Booker paced the Tigers with17 points. Filer and Milton Jenningsadded 13 each.

Clemson played without K.J.McDaniels, who tied a career-high with17 points against Virginia Tech in theteams’ last meeting. McDaniels, who isClemson’s second-leading scorer (10.7ppg), has missed two straight games witha sprained ankle. u

Phillips scored seven of hergame-high 16 points in the thirdperiod, leading a 12-point spurt onthe end of a 16-2 run that actuallybegan just before halftime. It gavethe Greenwave, who trailed 19-18 atthe break, a 34-21 lead.

Gulley later scored three straighttimes in transition, once off a stealat mid-court to lead a 12-3 run thatextended that margin to 44-26 with6:23 remaining in the game.

“Katlyn stepped up huge for us,”Frazier said. “It seemed like everytime I looked up she was doingsomething good.

“Her and Ivy stepped up defen-sively and really put the energy inus. Steals, turnovers and getting acouple of lay-ups (Gulley)’s energy, our kids really feed off it.”

It was all about defensive pres-sure and tempo for Clintwood asthey seemed to wear down the slow-er Panthers in the second half.

“The constant pressure on themin the man and in the 2-2-1 press, just keeping people in front of usand running and jumping, at some

point when you get tired you maybeget a little lax with the ball and wetook advantage of (that),” Frazierexplained. “Once got to that pointwe put our foot on the throttle andpulled away which was good for us.”

In its first state quarterfinal insome 24 years Clintwood forced 20turnovers in the first half but couldnot convert on the other end.

“I just tried to keep my head upand get the nervous jitters out ofus,” said Phillips, who scored 11points in the second half. “(In thesecond half) we came out with ourheads up.”

The Greenwave, with leadingscorer Kayla Mullins battling foultrouble, scored just three points andwas 0-for-14 from the field in thefirst quarter. It was obvious nerveswere getting in the way.

“We came out tight,” Frazierexplained. “We missed multipleshots at point-blank (range), a lot ofshots in the paint. The nerves gotthe best of us.

“But once we settled down onceand we had time to think about whatwe knew we wanted to do, whichwas get it out and run (we did and)

that was the difference in thegame.”

Tayley Broyles scored 12 pointsand Heather Crawford contributeda double-double with 10 points anda game-high 11 rebounds forNorthwood. The Panthers (17-9)were just 1-of-15 from 3-point rangeand finished with 30 turnovers.

Northwood coach TammyGillespie, whose club shot just 18.4percent (9-of-49) from the fieldoverall, would not talk to the mediaafter the game.

Taylor Fleming scored ninepoints and Gulley finished witheight points and four assists forClintwood, which now has plenty ofexperience in must-win games as itheads to Richmond.

“Our first big game was beatingTwin Valley just to get to the RegionD championship,” Frazier said. “Forus to experience what’s going tohappen, we feel like we’re dancingnow.

“We have no seniors. We feel likewe’re building something specialhere.

It’s exciting, it’s good for ourcommunity it’s good for our team.” u

returned from thewar and worked awhile at variousjobs nearby. Heworked for N.B.Parsons until hewrecked a piece ofequipment andbroke his leg in theaccident. He trav-

eled out west and worked shortly, thenreturned to the East Coast and worked as amechanic in the D.C. area and upstateVirginia. He later went to Florida andworked. His parents also went to Florida foryears each winter and lived with Burns.

Later after his dad passed away at 88years of age he returned to live with andlater care for his mother, Elsie after she hada stroke at about age 90.

Jackie, according to Burns, got a briefover view of things he remembered from thepast and folks who lived in Hurricane andabout World War II and other things that hehas done and also remembered during his 90plus earthly years.

Jack visited several hours, but got a lot ofinteresting memories from his cousin Burns.

onship, but to enjoy the ride becauseit doesn’t happen very often,” saidDotson.

The ride was rather smooth forthe Lady Warriors in the state quar-terfinal contest.

Central jumped out to a 14-0 leadin the first quarter.

The Lady Warriors connected 15of 33 shot attempts in the first half, while Patrick Henry only shot theball 15 times in the first two quar-ters. The Lady Rebels (18-10) con-nected on only two of thoseattempts.

“The girls came out really nerv-ous early and we weren’t makingthe passes we wanted to make andour shots weren’t really falling,”said Patrick Henry coach Tommy

Thomas. “There’s just not much youcan do when your shots aren’tfalling.”

As has been the case for most ofthe season, the Lady Warriors reliedon their strong defensive pressureto set the tone early and take thewin.

Central for the Lady Rebels into24 turnovers in the contest, 13 com-ing from steals.

Hayley Wyrick led the squad inscoring with 27 points, ninerebounds, three steals and threeassists in the game.

Logan Reynolds added 13 points,16 rebounds, seven assists and fivesteals for the Lady Warriors, whileLaura Gipe finished with 11 pointsand Reagan Davis added ninepoints and three steals.

Central was expected to make a

trip to the state tournament last sea-son, but was upended in the RegionD Division 2 tournament semifinalsby Virginia High.

That made this year’s tourna-ment win even more gratifying forthe Lady Warriors players whoreturned this season.

“We are really excited,” saidWyrick. “We are so ready to go. Wewant to get this job done.”

Reynolds, a sophomore, who hasstarted for two seasons on the LadyWarriors squad agreed the team isready for the trip to the D2 finalfour.

“We just need to stay intense andcome out strong,” said Reynolds.

Jade Miller led Patrick Henry’sscorers with eight points in thegame for the Lady Rebels, whileKasey Uecker added seven points. u

doubts about us,” saidKeys. “But we just had tocome out and play.”

For the first half, itlooked like the improba-ble trip to Richmond forthe Raiders would nothappen at all.

Burton held an early 5-3 lead before a basketfrom Bland’s DarrylClark and 3-pointer fromTyler White put the Bearsahead 8-5 with just underfour minutes to play in theopening quarter.

Bland County (14-11)kept the lead the rest ofthe half.

Burton cut the lead tothree points in the secondquarter, but two 3-point-ers from Bland in thefinal minute put the Bearsahead 26-17.

Bland seemed posed toclose things out in the sec-ond half and take thequarterfinal win.

“Basketball is animperfect game and wemade a lot of mistakes, especially in the firsthalf,” said Williams. “But,it’s also a game of heartand our players kept gut-ting it out, especially ondefense.”

A few defensiveadjustments by Williamsto help his players makethe 3-point shot a littletougher for Bland Countyin the second half seemedto work.

The Bears hit six 3-point shots in the firsthalf, but connected ononly one in the secondhalf.

“We’re not great shoot-ers, but somehow wefound a way win the gamewith defense, reboundingand attacking the basket,”said Williams.

Burton cut the BlandCounty lead to 34-31 bythe end of the third quar-ter.

Bland County heldonto the lead until 5:09 toplay in the game when

Beaty hit one of two freethrows to tie the contest at37-37.

Kevin VanNess fol-lowed with another freethrow just seconds laterto put the Raiders up 38-37.

The two teamsswapped baskets the restof the way.

Bath County tied thegame at 44-44 with 10 sec-onds left on a shot off theglass from Jon Miller.

After a timeout, Burtoninbounded the ball withthe length of the court totravel.

Beaty took the ball inthe backcourt and headedup the floor quickly. Hedrove to the right side ofthe key and attempted todrive inside. But, Blandexpected him to do thatand two defendersstopped him.

“We were trying to getErvin the ball, but theywere able to stop him,”said Williams. “They gotthe ball out of Ervin’shands and he did what hehad to do. He got the ballto the first guy he saw andthat was Alex.”

Without hesitation,Keys took the ball wentairborne and released hisshot.

“I was nervous,” Keysadmitted of the split-sec-ond play that seemed tolast much longer. “Ithought I was going tomiss it and we were goingto overtime, but it justwent in.”

Keys finished thegame with 11 points andeight rebounds for theRaiders, while McKenzieBlair finished with 12points and 17 rebounds.

“Everybody was a lit-tle nervous when wecame out, but we finallysettled down and justplayed,” said Blair.

Beaty added 10 pointsfor Burton in the win.

Bland’s Asher Dillowled all scorers with 20points for the Bears. u
