See story on page 12 Kennedy Worried For Metro North Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has again brought into question the resolve and commitment of both Labour and Fine Gael regarding the delivery of Metro North. He main- tains that neither party has the commitment nor passion to tough it out for Metro North. He claims that Fianna Fáil is the only party truly committed to the vital project and will deliver on Metro North and has slammed Labour and Fine Gael for their positions on the vital project. Kennedy said, “Labour leader, Eamon Gilmore said Labour would “redo” the National Development Plan and prioritise those projects likely to create the most jobs. “Metro North would be shot back,” said Gilmore. Meanwhile, Enda Kenny has publicly confirmed he would “look at which infrastructure projects can be safely deferred or abandoned. That means that some projects, like the Metro projects in Dublin, would be put on the back-burner.” Kennedy is worried that the golden opportunity for job creation, which Metro North will deliver, is set to be lost forever and has accused his constituency election opponents in Fine Gael and Labour of being less than convincing and ‘wishy-washy’ about the project. He claims that, apart from the employ- ment opportunities, the vital new transport link between Swords and Dublin City Centre is enormously worrying for local commuters who have had to endure poor quality transport service for too long He continued, “Labour and Fine Gael cannot be trusted to deliver on Metro North. Fianna Fail is committed to delivering it and has been so consis- tently. We will ensure the 6,000 construction jobs and potential 37,000 jobs are created, by proceeding with this important investment for the North Dublin area. The simple truth is that Labour and Fine Gael will deny the country and especially the people of Dublin North this much needed project. They have changed their position to suit their election strategy locally and cannot be trusted on this impor- tant issue. Fianna Fáil is committed to fulfilling our long-held promise and deliver it,” he concluded. By Patrick Finnegan Deputy James Reilly TD, main- tains that Fine Gael’s 5 Point Plan to ‘Get Ireland Working’ contains the most comprehen- sive jobs and growth strategy of any Party in this election. Reilly said, “Fine Gael believes that NewERA, combined with our other jobs initiatives, can create 100,000 new jobs over the next five years. Integral to that plan is the creation of at least 20,000 jobs directly in the trade and construction sectors through investment in key infrastructure projects.” He continued, “Fine Gael is the only party to put forward a costed and credible plan to invest in modern national infrastruc- ture, involving an investment of €7 billion. The bulk of this will be invested in our energy, water, and communications networks in order to bring them up to the best international standards. Laura BrennanCharity NightIn Malahide

On Saturday 12th February, Pat and NualaBrennan welcomed over 200 people to theGrand Hotel, Malahide for the third annualLaura Brennan Gala night. Pat andNuala’s beautiful daughter, Laura diedsuddenly from a rare virus in April 2008when she was just sixteen years old. Patand Nuala subsequently established theLaura Brennan Charitable Trust in hermemory. They have worked tirelesslyever since raising funds to ease financialpressure and provide vital medical assis-tance to families of sick children in theNorth County. One of the children tobenefit from the Laura Brennan CharitableTrust is Mary Kate, a 12 year old girl fromSwords who received potentially lifesaving treatment for anaphylaxis, the noto-rious nut allergy condition. Nuala read outa heart warming thank you letter fromMary Kate, describing how, as a result ofher treatment, she no longer has to be ‘the

girl with the nut allergy’. I can just beme!’ There was a large gathering oftalented basketball players from Malahideand Killester in attendance, representingan important aspect of Laura’s life. As Patmentioned in his moving speech, ‘basket-ball was a passion for Laura, she just lovedto play.” A great night was had by all withfriends, family, neighbours and teacherscelebrating Laura’s short, but happy lifeand raising much needed funds in theprocess.

Landfill Running Out Of Space

There is still uncertainty surrounding the delivery of amajor landfill facility at the Nevitt in Lusk. This is addingto a crisis that is seeing the county run out of landfill space.According to the Environmental Protection Agency, thedelay in delivering the Nevitt ‘superdump’ and a similarfacility in Cork is a problem for the county’s future wastelicence. The Nevitt proposal will not get underway for atleast another year, if at all with the council and the EPAdefending the project in a judicial review of it’s wastelicence. A recent report published by the EPA says that 16of Ireland’s 29 landfill facilities will be full within the nextthree years, making the delivery of new facilities as well aswaste reduction a priority. The report says that even if thelevel of waste generated in the country remains at 2009levels, the country would run out of landfill space withineight years, if the two new facilities at Cork and the Nevittare not delivered. An emerging crisis in the North Countyregion was pointed to in the report. As previously reportedby the County Leader, by the end of this year the NorthCounty will be looking to ferry it’s waste to other parts ofthe country as Balleally closes and waiting continues forthe opening of the proposed Nevitt facility. The EPA reportwarns of what it calls ‘significant inter regional movementof waste’ over the next three years as county landfills closeone-by-one. However on the bright side there was somegood news in the report on waste reduction.

Thoughtful SwordsStudents ShowThey Care

As part of their ‘Young SocialInnovators’ project, 5th Yearstudents from Fingal CommunityCollege in Swords came up with avery innovative plan. Theydecided to focus on changing theattitudes of adults and elderlypeople towards teenagers. Theyfelt that this attitude was, inmany cases, false. “We wanted toshow that we are not troublesomeand clueless, but are innovativeand grateful for our precedinggeneration,” said project member,Evan Guilmartin. After much soulsearching, the team came up withthe idea of holding a ‘Bingo Night’for the Senior Citizens in the area.Evan explains, “It is being held in

our school hall and we havesecured donations from localcompanies and one of our fellowstudents, Kevin Clancy acted asbingo caller. We now want alladults and senior citizens torecognise our efforts and to under-stand that we want them toappreciate our efforts and contri-bution to their cause,” said Evan. All this has been brought closer toreality, thanks to the YoungSocial Innovators team, whichincludes Conor Hall, AnthonyDempsey, Brian Irwin, AaronHoey, Seana Cole, Nicole Brown,Ashling Madigan, Linda Fleming,Arlene McGovern, EvanGuilmartin and the team leader,Catherine Campion. The verysuccessful bingo evening tookplace in the school hall lastWednesday, 16th February and was followed by some light refreshments, which wereenjoyed by all.

Happy Swords Senior Citizens, from left, Chrissy Campion, Margaret Molloy,Teresa Woods, Rose Clarke and Irene Lawless are pictured with Fingal CommunityCollege 5th Year students at the Bingo night on 16th February last.

The drive for a new Post Primary Irish school inBalbriggan is gaining momentum. A crowd of over 180people turned out en-masse to demonstrate their supportfor the establishment of a new Gaelcholaiste inBalbriggan last week. The meeting was held inBalbriggan Town Hall and many travelled from Rush,Lusk, Skerries and Swords and there was even a contin-gent who came from Ashbourne to show their support. Allpresent, including local politicians concurred that ColaisteGhlór na Mara ticked all the boxes in regards opening anew school and Trevor Sargent conveyed the news thatthe department viewed the submission as the most profes-sional and comprehensive that they had ever seen. Sargenttold the County Leader, “A site has already been desig-nated for the new school. In a submission to theDepartment of Education last June, a total of 412 pupilswere registered and this has now grown to 460. The only

application received has been from Colaiste Ghlór naMara.” Sargent continued, “At present, pupils fromGaelscoileanna around the North County, includingGaelscoil Bhaile Bhrigín, Scoil an Duinninigh, Kinsealy,Gaelscoil Bhrian Boroimhe, Swords, Scoil Ros Eo, Rushand Scoil Realt na Mara in Skerries have no secondaryschool outlet to pursue their education through Irish. Up tonow, pupils from these schools have had to apply tosecondary schools in the city centre or others, many milesaway and not practicable,” he said. The new Gaelscoilwill attract students from Ashbourne and Drogheda, aswell as local children.” Ríona Ní Shúilleabháin, DeputyPrincipal, Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín told the County Leader,“In a number of years, there will be almost 1,700 childreneducated through the medium of Irish in theGaelscoileanna in Balbriggan, Rush and Swords. There iscurrently no provision for second level Gaelscolaíocht inthe North County area. Coláiste Ghlór na Mara hopes tofill that gap. Large numbers of parents whose childrenattend English speaking schools in the area have alsoexpressed an interest in sending their children to ColáisteGhlór na Mara. The school would also be a hugeeconomic and cultural boost to the town,” she concluded.Sargent said he received an email from a 12 year old localpupil, who is currently attending Gaelscoil Bhaile Bhrigín,who pleaded with the TD, “I will be going to ArdgillanCommunity College, but I would prefer to go to ColaisteGhlór na Mara. If you can get it opened, I would begrateful,“ Thankfully, he won’t have to wait too long.

homehouse&The stretch in the evenings is very subtle, but howeverit’s very welcoming too, getting us ready for the longerevenings to come. The little things mean a lot and asmall stretch in the evening is so welcome as it’s sayinggood bye to the long winter we have all had quite enoughof. It takes some of us a long time to shake off the winterhabits of cosying up in the evening as the weather is stilla bit chilly. However thinking what you can do with this extra daylight and the rest will follow. The time isperfect to do some jobs around the house and cheer upyour home.

Become A Designer

That’s right, just because you may not be a qualified homedesigner you can do a little planning and give it a shot.Create a scrapbook or binder full of magazine clippings, fabrics and photos of design that catches your eye. Ahomeowner who has done there homework really helpswhen designing a part of there home. When you have 20different pages collected, it gives you a good idea of whatyou’re aiming for. A sample board consisting of a collec-tion of fabric scraps, paint colours, flooring bits, photos offurnishings that tells the room’s design story is veryhelpful. Make your own when you’re dreaming up a roommakeover. This also helps you stick to your vision onceyou’ve started.

Be open to a room swap

Swapping rooms or areas in a room is a trick that can workwonders to giving your home a brand new feel. A diningroom and living room will trade places or a part of thekitchen could be reversed. Of course, unless you’re guttingyour entire home you can’t swap the kitchen with abedroom, but by taking a fresh look at how a space works, you may find a better way to use your square footage. The sofa positioning in front of the fireplace and televisionis a logical choice, try moving furniture around and gettingan idea of how you can make more changes.

Remember to Add Storage

Creating a new look in the bedrooms is so exciting, as thisroom is so important to whoever sleeps in it. Childrenseem to accumulate a lot of junk and it’s important to keepon top of it. Try bright red, yellow and blue colours to givefunky fun. Bins, baskets and buckets are every parent’ssaviour when it comes to conquering kid clutter. Storethem under a low counter that doubles as a play table orincorporate them into a bed. There are lots of storage bagsand boxes designed especially for under the bed.

Window Treatments Are a Must

Don’t be afraid to knock down a wall or two to make aroom bigger. This will take some planning and this iswhen you can refer to your scrap book for the ultimatedesign vision. Some people knock down their utilityrooms and replace them with a long cupboard, this canalmost doubling the size of the kitchen. There are lots ofways to cheer up a kitchen and rather than replacing thewhole kitchen you can add some improvements to it. Thecontrast of the cool toned stainless steel appliances againstthe warm, dark wood cabinets and backslash add a feelingof contemporary elegance. The windows, however, are anopportunity to inject a bit of personality to a kitchen thatreads as right out of a kitchen showroom. Nice blinds anda simple ornament or spray of flowers can put the finishingtouches to any room not just a kitchen.

Enterprising students ofFingal CommunityCollege in Swords offi-cially opened a SchoolBank recently. The AIB‘Build a Bank Challenge’is an initiative forTransition and 5th Yearstudents to run their ownSchool Bank with thesupport of AIB. Thebank was officiallyopened with a ribboncutting ceremony, performed by MarianEnright, Retail Managerof AIB, Swords. Now in its ninth year, itenables students todevelop a business andmaintain it throughoutthe school year. DavidScott, Student Officerfrom AIB, Swords toldthe County Leader, “Thestudents set up, run andmanage a bank branchwithin their school withthe support of AIB. Thestudents are responsible

for all aspects of thebank, from sourcing newcustomers, to openingnew AIB accounts and

managing savings.”David continued, “Weheld interviews lastOctober and the studentswere chosen for theirbanking roles.” The chal-

lenge involves regionalfinals throughout thecountry on 11th Marchwhere schools competeagainst other schools fora place at the NationalFinal in May. This willtake place at the CarltonAirport Hotel.David was delighted

with the response of theschool to the project. “Ihave responsibility forseeing that AIB’s proce-dures are followed, including data protec-

tion. The attitude of thestudents and teachers hasbeen excellent and theyhave embraced theproject in the most posi-tive way. Each SchoolBank receives amarketing budget, butthe students of FingalCommunity College

actually did their ownfundraising through cakesales and devoted muchof their own time toensure the project was asuccess,” he concluded.

Pictured at the official opening of An Taisce School Bank at Fingal CommunityCollege are L-R, David Scott, Student Officer, AIB, Swords, school principal, SharonMcGrath, Anna Kazadojeva, Kevin Clancy, Maliha Jyoti, Vlada Novicka, CaoimheDillon, Marian Enright, Retail Manager AIB, Swords, who cut the ribbon, SarahFay, teacher Clare Hayes and school vice-principal, Martina Donlon.

Daly Says Pyrite ProblemIs An Emergency

Socialist Party electioncandidate, Clare Daly hassaid that the pyrite problemrearing its head across theNorth County must bedeclared an emergency. “Anational trust must beestablished to embark onthe necessary remedialworks as a matter ofurgency,” she declared.Daly was speaking after theCouncil revealed that pyrite has been confirmed inestates in Rush and Balbriggan, as well as estates inMalahide and Kinsealy. She said, “It is clear that thisproblem is reaching emergency proportions. Many ofthe estates built during the Celtic Tiger and purchasedat massively over-inflated prices, are now being foundto have pyrite. Some of the structural problems are onlynow coming to light, having taken some years todevelop.” Daly, who has hosted meetings with aspecialist in this field said, “Residents have found thatonce the problem emerges, Homebond, the so-calledstructural guarantee set up by the Construction IndustryFederation is very slow to respond. Residents arefinding themselves kicked between the developers andquarry owners. In many instances these have folded.Homebond itself doesn’t have a fraction of the fundsnecessary to deal with this problem. It is clear that thisproblem cannot be shouldered by homeowners ; theyare the victims. It costs €70,000 on average to repaireach house.” Daly continued, “This is a consequence ofderegulation and the fact that the construction industrywas allowed to regulate itself, therefore the state has tobear some of the responsibility. There should be animmediate programme of remedial works launched onan estate by estate basis, where unemployed construc-tion workers and apprentices seeking to finish theirtraining would be employed to get this work done.”Daly pledged to ensure that all affected estates wouldbe brought together in the coming months to be apowerful lobbying force for justice and the right to thesafe enjoyment of their homes.

O’Brien Blasts CouncilDecision On Model Railway

Deputy DarraghO’Brien hasexpressed hisdismay that thefamous Fry ModelRailway is to leaveMalahide Castle.Notice has beengiven by the CountyCouncil to Fry ModelRailway to vacatetheir premises inMalahide Castle,

which will result inthe loss of thisfacility for the NorthCounty. The iconic modelrailway is a collec-tion of hand mademodels of Irishtrains and has beena great attractionfor the many visi-tors to the Malahidearea over the years.

O’Brien, a native ofMalahide fondlyremembers the Fry

model railway as ayoungster andregards it as an inte-gral part of life atMalahide Castle. “Imanaged to get €7.5million grant fromgovernment todevelop the CraftCourtyard inMalahide Castle. Theidea was to increasevisitor numbers from130,000 to 360,000,

which was verywelcome,” he said.O’Brien is mystifiedat the council’s deci-sion. Surely theyshould be trying toincrease visitornumbers instead ofthe opposite ; itmakes no sense. TheFry Model Railwaymust stay inMalahide and thelocal authority needsto see sense andreverse its decision. It’s been a part ofMalahide Castle for20 years,” concludeda furious O’Brien.

Last Friday morning the hall was abuzz with Junior and Senior infants, who were all excitedas they all had songs to sing in different languages andfrom different countries. Children from other classes sangworld-wide songs including, the famous French song,‘Alouette’, the well know Australian nursery rhyme,‘Kookaburra’ (The Australian Kingfisher), and the chil-dren even sang the well known ‘Head, Shoulders, Kneesand Toes’. in Hungarian. Sixth class children danced andsang a traditional African song, ‘ Waka Waka’ (This TimeFor Africa), which was the official 2010 Fifa World Cupsong. Ryan Calls For AbolitionOf Upward Only Rent

Labour Party candidate, Brendan Ryan hasexpressed his Party’s commitment to abol-ishing upward-only rent reviews. “We arecommitted to supporting the employment-intensive retail sector by implementing aseries of measures to help a sector that hasbeen devastated by the economic downturn,”he said. “Urgent action will be required fromthe new Government to protect jobs, busi-nesses, and liveli-hoods in the retailsector, at a timewhen consumerconfidence is at rockbottom. Labour’sE n t e r p r i s e ,Innovation andGrowth strategypublished last weekcommitted to a seriesof simple measuresto help boost this important sector.” “Thissector has suffered twofold from the prop-erty bias of Fianna Fáil’s economic policy.First, it has seen its revenues plunge afterthe dramatic collapse of the propertybubble, and secondly, it finds itself trappedin upward only boom-time leases, withconsumer demand at recession levels,” hecontinued. “This toxic combination hasresulted in the loss of 37,000 retail jobs overthe past two years, and the closure of long-standing businesses in our cities, towns andcommunities the length and breadth ofIreland, including many here in the area.”Ryan highlighted how this situation isaffecting businesses here in the NorthCounty and said, “I have met many smallbusiness people across the North Countyduring my canvassing who are strugglingdue to onerous costs, and particularly due tohigh rent. Simply by walking throughtowns across the region, for example fromApplewood in Swords, to Balbriggan we cansee the evidence of this problem,” heconcluded.

We all love to spoil ourselves or our loved ones on specialoccasions, but may not be sure of how to go about it. Wellnow you can relax. The Old Schoolhouse Restaurant inSwords ticks all the boxes in this respect. This 18thcentury gem is tucked away on the banks of the WardRiver at Coolbanagher, just yards from the bustling MainStreet and specialises in the finest food and beverageanywhere in the North County.Proprietor, Jason Lawlor, a native of Swords has been atthe helm for the past three years, although the restauranthas been in the family for much longer. Originally built in1846 as a National School, this iconic building served theSwords community as a school until 1982. It was thenconverted into a restaurant, keeping many of the originalschool features, which added greatly to its appeal. Jasonsaid that “a complete refurbishment was carried out in2005, whereby the pub and upstairs bar was added andthe restaurant area extended.” The very intimate old

world restaurant caters for 50 diners and comes completewith an open fire, exuding a romantic ambience, perfectfor that special occasion. When the building wasconverted to a restaurant, it quickly gained a reputationfor excellent food and a place to go for excellent food andservice. Jason has succeeded in retaining and indeedenhancing this reputation during his time as owner. He has a very simple philosophy in respect of his clien-tele. “We like to provide good food with a kind andfriendly service. In times of recession, we value ourcustomers more than ever and we go that extra mile toprovide a value for money service.” The refurbishment ofthe restaurant and extension of the bar area has beencarried out in a fashion that strikes a fine balance betweenthe building’s rich history and the need to provide for themodern customer. The quirkycorners and snugs that areassociated with period build-ings have been retained andcleverly used by Jason andhis team and add greatly tothe charm of the place.Jason is no stranger to thehospitality industry and hasworked in various local estab-lishments over the years. “Wespecialise in steaks andseafood,” he said proudly“and we will be particularlybusy for Mother’s Day andfor upcoming Confirmations and Communions. We arevery lucky to have a happy, friendly and motivated staffof 22 who interact very well with our customers. Thishelps us to maintain a loyal customer base,” said Jason.“Our chef, Harvey has been in the business for the past 15years, having studied in Germany and France and hebrings a wide range of skills and experience to the restau-rant.”The atmospheric pub provides ‘Drinks Specials’ onTuesdays, with prices ranging from €3.75 to €4.00 perdrink. Mid week food specials are available from Mondayto Thursday for €20, including a starter, main course and

a glass of wine. The ‘Early Bird’ special is availablebetween 5pm and 7pm and includes a half bottle of wineper two persons, with a maximum of four bottles per tableof eight. In summer, the extensive beer garden is apopular area and extends from the side of the buildingright around to the front entrance on Church Road. Fridaynight music has proven to be popular and attracts aregular clientele. The bar provides coverage of all themain sporting events and the atmosphere becomes elec-tric on such occasions. The impressive menu has something for everyone, from

Launch Of Carers’Manifesto In MalahideFamily Carers are one of the country’s greatest nationalresources. Despite this, carers are dissatisfied and frus-trated with their current situation and many are overbur-dened and feel undervalued and unable to pursue a life oftheir own. This can result in the sustainability of familycare coming under threat unless the fundamentals ofCarers’ policy are given a new direction and impetus.Caring can adversely affect a carer’s financial situation, ifthe carer has to give up work to become a full time carerand meet the significant costs involved, including fuel, dietary requirements, transport and medical expenses.Caring can impact on the health of carers, who frequentlysuffer with back problems, stress and depression. It isimportant that Carers find a balance between caring andlooking after their own needs. With this in mind, a manifesto has been produced, following ongoing consultation with Family Carers, sothat candidates in the upcoming General Election and

their political parties can become aware and address theissues faced by carers and to ensure that their voices areheard come election time. Jacqueline Millman of theCarers Association launched the Carers Manifesto in theGrand Hotel, Malahide on 15th February in the presenceof local election hopefuls, Trevor Sargent, DarraghO’Brien and Clare Daly.

The jobs market haschanged fundamentally overthe last number of years. Thejob hunt and route to yournext role has also changed inaddition to how you differen-tiate yourself from thecompetition. You have done your companyresearch and prepared a killerCV. You have reached the pointyou were working towards, theinterview. The physical prepa-ration you do prior to attendingan interview has a huge physio-logical benefit. Putting on thesuit, travelling the route and inmy case the make up mask allhelp prepare you. When you are advised that yourinterview will be by telephone itcan be quite daunting!

Tips1. Always use a landlinenumber. Mobile phones canhave 2nd calls coming throughand coverage can be lostcausing unnecessary distrac-tions and nerves for you2. Make sure you are in a quietplace. If you intend to do thecall from home make sure thekids are not in the house 3. Take the time you normallywould to study the job descrip-tion4. You can have your CV andthe job description open in frontof you5. You can have a notepad andpen to take notes when ques-tions are asked to ensure youhave answered them fully6. You can have a list of keyaccomplishments open in frontof you7. You can list your questionsfor the end of the interview asthey occur to youThings to remember 1. Never eat, smoke or chewgum during a telephone inter-view2. Never interrupt as the persondoes not have the benefit ofseeing your body language orinterest and can misinterpret

your eagerness as rudeness.3. Remember the interviewer/snames (you can write themdown!)4. Speak slowly and calmly 5. Remember to thank yourinterviewer/s for their time atthe end of the call. This phone call could lead youto your new job – prepare, focus and as ever the best ofluck!

Dr. Mark Harrold is the onlyIndependent running in the electionin the Dublin North constituency. He is a clinical psychologist wholives in Malahide and is marriedwith two young children. A formercolumnist with the Irish Timeswhere he wrote about parentingissues, he has wide experience inthe areas of learning disability, parenting, stressmanagement and work-place bullying. Hestood in the 2002general election inDublin North East as anIndependent on theissue of our inadequatehealth service and rightsfor people with disabili-ties. Speaking exclu-sively to the County Leader, he said,“I want to be a conduit for the angerthat all of the people of NorthDublin are feeling. For example, Iwant a full investigation into howSR Technics closed down in suchdubious circumstances. I alsobelieve that Metro North would givethe area the boost it needs in thewake of the SR Technics closing. But my other focus will be on thenational situation. I am determined

that our children’s future will neveragain be in the gift of a group ofincompetent sociopaths, whose onlyinterest is in bleeding the countrydry, while they fill their coffers. Wemust appoint experts to positions ofresponsibility and not party loyal-ists. I am angry about the decima-

tion of our country byvested interests,” hesaid. “I want to find away to ensure that thosewho have operated justbelow the threshold ofcriminality, are made toaccount for theiractions, and are neveragain allowed to occupypositions of influence.”

An end to the ruinous culture ofcronyism and a renegotiation of theIMF “bailout” are two of the centralplanks of Harrold’s electioncampaign in the Dublin Northconstituency. In addition, he wantsto introduce a nationwide StressControl programme to address theintolerable rise of suicide across allstrata of our society. The model isbased on a very successful initiativedeveloped in Glasgow.
