Dublin Fire Brigade representatives have warned that the threat of industrial action has increased following the news that the HSE is to take over the running of its ambulance service. At present, ambulance services for North County residents are provided by Dublin Fire Brigade, through Swords Fire Station, and the HSE from it’s base at Lissenhall, Swords. Dublin City Council runs the fire brigade on behalf of all four Dublin local authorities, and it’s Chief Executive, Owen Keegan announced the HSE’s National Ambulance Service (NAS) will now be respon- sible for all emergency calls in the Dublin region, including the North County. The National Ambulance Service, which is based in Tallaght, currently shares call outs with Dublin Fire Brigade in Tara Street. The system was criti- cised as having “ineffi- ciencies” and “poor co-ordination” by a HIQA report published last December. The decision was criticised by local TD, Clare Daly (ULA), who told the County Leader, “I am totally opposed to Minister Varadkar’s idea of bringing the Dublin Fire Brigade Ambulance service into the HSE. Considering the chaotic situ- ation that the HSE is famous for, anybody would wonder as to why the Minister would consider such a disas- trous move.” She continued, “It is clear that HSE mismanagement has been respon- sible for most of the problems in the ambulance service. One such example from my constituency here in North County Dublin, was when a HSE ambulance driver informed me how they received a new ambulance, which had 70,000 miles on the clock. He also told me how six crew members turned up for a shift, with only two ambulances avail- able for work.” “The truth of the matter is that Dublin Fire Brigade, which covers 40 per cent of national calls on seven per cent of the national budget, has the best response times in the country. In my opinion it would be absolutely mad to transfer any amount of the Dublin Fire Brigade Ambulance service to the black hole that is the HSE,” she claimed. SIPTU sector organiser, Brendan O’Brien also spoke to the County Leader and said the threat of industrial action has now increased, with news of the HSE ambulance takeover. He said that firefighters are trained to work interchangeably in ambulance or fire tender duties. Yes, there was a very difficult period which lasted a few days, but thankfully, Molly showed extraordinary courage during this time,” he said. “Because Molly had so much of the cancer starting off, and with the intense round of chemo, it was difficult to get stem cells from her. Eventually, they went into the bone marrow and took them from there, before the marrow was even growing anything. They let the marrow develop the stem cells and they then banked them in bags. This effectively was her transplant. With Molly’s stem cells coming from the marrow, they tend to be slower, which results it a longer recovery time,” said Gerry. “Molly’s transplant was one of the most under- whelming things you could experience. It was nothing as dramatic as a heart transplant or kidney transplant. What it amounted to was two bags taken out of the blood bank, with millions of cells, which were infused into her line. The whole thing took just 28 minutes,” he said. “Emma and I never got ahead of ourselves, and we just take each day as it comes. The hospital have moved Molly out of the transplant unit, but she is still in isolation. She’s doing really well and her counts are coming up. Last Friday was her 41st day in isolation, and it’s starting to get to her a little and she just wants to get home, and we hope that will be later this week, all going well,” concluded Gerry. Dream ComeTrue For NiamhLast Saturday was a very special day for little NiamhRafferty from River Valley in Swords, who was chosento lead out the Dublin footballers in their match againstTyrone at Croke Park.Five year old Niamh attends St John’s Oncology ward inCrumlin Hospital with a brain tumour. Her mother Karentold the County Leader, “She is now 18 months into hertreatment and she is progressing well and is verybubbly. She has MRI scans every three months and wehave to monitor things regularly. The tumour, which isstable, is a bilateral optic glyoma, which means itaffects the optic nerve, which could lead to permanentblindness. It also means that the tumour could pop upon any nerve around her body. They are benigntumours, for which we are thankful. However thetumour in her brain is affecting her eyesight, hence thechemo,” said Karen. She continued, “James Devlin fromthe local St Finian’s GAA club approached us with theidea to put her forward to lead out the Dubs. We weredelighted with this great gesture from James. She andher brother, Liam (4) are members of St Finian’s GAAnursery section, and they never miss a Saturday withthe group. Indeed James has described them as two of

the best players in the nursery section. Both Niamh andLiam, who are great supporters of the Dubs lovenothing more than donning their sky blue jerseys andcheering on the Dubs. Her proud parents, Karen andMicheál said that Niamh took to her task with greatgusto, as she led her heroes out on to the pitch.

Major Concerns For Patient SafetyThe Trolley Watchfigures, showing thenumber of patients ontrolleys in emergencydepartments andcorridors in our hospi-tals, consistently showBeaumont Hospitaland Our Lady ofLourdes, Drogheda, asamong the highest inthe entire country. These figures areproduced by the IrishNurses and MidwivesAssociation (INMO)

and the fact that bothhospitals are used asthe first point of call formany North Countyresidents, is alarming. However, the wors-ening conditions atBeaumont hospital hadbeen highlighted lastDecember by a senioremergency departmentdoctor, who alertedsenior management atthe hospital, as well asHSE chief, TonyO’Brien. This came well

in advance of the recentcrisis in trolley figures, which escalated torecord numbers. The doctor describedthe conditions atBeaumont as the equiv-alent of ‘healthcareGuantanamo’ - a refer-ence to the infamousdetention centre inCuba. In his letter, thedoctor, who did notwish to be named, expressed his concernfor patient safety and

said that he could notunderstand how, usually elderly patientson trolleys in front ofthe nurses’ station‘could ever be regardedas an acceptable situa-tion.’His letter also referredto patients beingexposed to sleep-depriving noise and

chaos for up to 48hours which is, in hisopinion, the equivalentof healthcareGuantanamo. This level of concernwill come as a majorworry for local resi-dents and families, particularly asBeaumont and OurLady’s Drogheda, bothserve the majority ofpeople in North CountyDublin.

Mulville WantsDonabate RailToilets ReopenedPaul Mulville, Independent coun-cillor for the Swords electoral area, has called for Irish Rail to see senseand immediately re-open the toiletin Donabate Railway Station.“Irish Rail has made the announce-ment that they will close the railwaystation toilets in Donabate, as wellas Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush andLusk, and other stations in theDublin commuter belt as part of acost-cutting exercise. However, it istotally unacceptable as localcommuters, who already suffered arecent fare-increase last Winter, willbe left to face the inconvenience ofthe company’s short-sighted deci-

sion,” Mulville told the CountyLeader. “Delays to the service arealso increasing, and on top of allthis, the toilets in Donabate wereonly refurbished a short number ofyears ago. Furthermore, the peopleof Donabate Portrane have a partic-ular high usage of the train to get towork, about 1,100 at the lastcensus,” he added.“On a normal day, it is absolutely

essential that toilets are available instations to railway commuters.Older people, parents with youngchildren, and people with illness areparticular in need of toilet facilities. But with overcrowding and delaysoccurring more frequently, it is clearthat this decision must be reversedand the toilets in Donabate, andother North County stations, beimmediately re-opened,” he said.

NewmanDisappointed AtCouncil ResponseLocal councillor, Joe Newman (NP)recently submitted a motion to theCouncil asking for funding to be putaside for a stretch of road leading fromthe roundabout at Forest Boulevarddown as far as Loreto College in RiverValley. He also asked for a survey to be under-taken on this road, which according toNewman, about one-third of the roadlooks like it has subsided, with cracksplentiful, causing hazardous conditionfor motorists, cyclists and pedestrianstrying to cross the road. Newman, however was disappointed with theresponse from the council to hismotion, and has demanded a morepositive response be forthcoming fromthe local authority to this particulararea. He told the County Leader, “Thereare quite a number of holes and cracksdotted all along this stretch of road, which requires immediate attention. The report I received back from thecouncil was a generic type of report, which was non-committal. I’m lookingfor more urgency and I’m disappointedthat it wasn’t given the attention itdeserved,” he said. An angry Newmancontinued, “I felt I was being dismissedby comments that the damage was was

being caused by utility companies, while what I see here, this is clearly notthe case. As an elected representativefor this area, I respond to requests andcomplaints from the people whoelected me on their behalf, and I will notbe sidelined in a dismissive mannerover this, or any other issues whichaffect the quality of life of residents,” hesaid.

Four months after the death of Australiancricketer Phillip Hughes, Cricket Ireland allrounder and local man John Mooney and hisfather-in-law have come up with a uniqueinvention. Mooney, originally fromBalrothery, got the idea for his invention, which is effectively an adjustable rear grille, used for additional protection for the back ofthe head and neck, due to another incidentinvolving his cousin in a club match earlierlast year. But the horrible footage emanatingfrom the Sheffield Shield match at the SCG in November, made him decide he could waitno longer.“I played in a club game last year where mycousin got hit in a similar area. So thethought had been in my mind beforehand, but when I saw Phil Hughes getting hit I was

adamant I was going to do something,”Mooney explained. “I bat quite low down inthe Irish team and I bat at the death where I

have to take on the short ball pretty muchevery time and get hit on the head quite a lot. “So we got talking, and with a few coathangers one evening we designed the guard. Then we got a local man who works withsteel to make us up a couple of prototypesand basically that’s where it came from. Ittook us about a month to get a workingproduct made that fitted the helmet perfectlyand was comfortable to wear while training. We had a tour to Dubai in January where I firststarted using it, and from the first day I put iton, there was no impingement on any shot Iplayed, and I haven’t taken it off my helmetsince,” he said. Mooney is calling it the ‘gorget’. “It’s exactlythe same as the grille of the helmet, you don’tnotice it much,” he said. For now Mooney is the only man able to wearthe gorget, as it has not yet been fully testedor certified for use. But the process by whichsuch certification will arrive is in motion, andhe is hopeful it will be ready in time for the2015 English season.

Following the success of his plain tobacco pack-aging legislation last week, Children’s Minister,Dr James Reilly is bracing himself for a series ofchallenges, which may end up in the courts. The new legislation has cleared all stages of theDáil and Seanad and is expected to be sent tothe President, to be signed into law before StPatrick’s Day.Major tobacco companiesare gearing up for a realfight, and have vowed tobring Dr Reilly and currentMinister for Heath, LeoVaradkar before the courts,in an attempt to have thelegislation overturned. Thetobacco firms claim that thenew legislation is aninfringement of their intel-lectual property rights.Ireland is now the secondcountry in the world, after Australia, to introduceplain packaging laws. However, a total of 10 EUcountries have lodged objections to the plans tointroduce standardised tobacco packaging, including Hungary, Poland, Spain, Italy andPortugal. The Bill, however has been widely welcomed bygroups, such as the Irish Cancer Society, theIrish Heart Foundation and the Irish AsthmaSociety.A determined Dr Reilly said, “What we havedone is potentially huge and we are giving thelead to the EU, by introducing legislation here.

We are nowremoving the finaladvertising bill-board for tobacco, which forces thetobacco companiesto show moreclarity that smokingkills, and kills in a multitude of ways,” he said. It is expected that the new products will be inthe shops by 2017.

We wrote a couple of weeksago of Sinn Féin’s MEP LiadhNí R iada’s cr i t ic ism ofCommission Pres identJuncker’s plan for StrategicInvestment. We now hearthat the President and hisCommission colleagues arenot h i t t ing the mark inGermany. There, dissatisfac-tion with Juncker’s generaleconomic policies is furtherfuelled by his drive to makethe Commission the primarypolicy making centre withinthe EU. But this is, one might say, what people voted for, it is ifone fo l lows the “LeadCandidate” conceptpromoted by all during theEuropean Elections last year.Juncker is pushing the policyhe set out at that time. Onewhich Merkel by herendorsement of him is alsocommitted to. Sinn Féin’s colleague, theGreek PM Alexis Tsipras isstill causing problems. The

crisis is far from over andGermany isdispleased atJuncker’s concilia-tory at t i tudetowards theGreek PM’sattempts tosquare the circle. Some pol i t ic iansfrom across the unionare making comment whichsuggests that the phrasingof the next bailout agree-ment may be such as toallow Tsipras some seriousface saving. This would notimprove the re lat ionshipbetween Juncker and Merkel,as she is a lso mi f fed byrecent concessions made bythe Commission to someEuro member statesallowing them an extensionon fiscal target deadlines.Perhaps Juncker is playing along game and sees Ní Riadaand her friends as the next

You couldeven make a largerbatch, add mince beefand cover with mashedpotato for a tastyShepard’s pie in thedays following. For the sweet toothedamong you, baking up ayummy St Patrick’s Daythemed dessert is theperfect excuse toindulge while you cele-brate. Maybe givegreen spongedcupcakes a go,complete with Irishcream, icing on the top.If you’re feeling moreadventurous, a stoutand chocolate spongecould be the dessert foryou, so serve withcream and tuck in. Allthese ingredients canbe sourced from yourlocal supermarket, ensuring that you havethe highest quality (andthe yummiest!) food onthe day.

Irish Traditions

It’s important to keepthe Irish traditions aliveand there are manyavenues you can godown to do so. If you’rehoping to really get into the traditional swingof things, you couldgive Irish dancing a go.Irish dancing goes tothe very heart of theIrish heritage and is a

rock badge or 2 toreally get in to the StPatrick’s Day spirit. Pickup some orange, greenand white face paint foryour little ones (ofwhich there will beplenty on sale aroundthe North County in therun up to the big day) topaint Irish flags on eachothers faces and headout to one of NorthCounty’s brilliantparades.

St Patrick’s DayParty

Day games and activi-ties such as Irishdancing and paintingstencils of shamrocksand Irish flags on to StPatrick’s Day T-shirts,to be worn during theparty. Make yourfriends and familygreen with envy at yourculinary skills and cookup a couple of Irishthemed treats to serveup to them. This couldinclude the all Irishdish of corned beef andcabbage to be servedin small dishes so yourguests can enjoy themstanding. Then toreally impress them, create a treat for theeyes and the tastebuds with a mint greencheesecake and sham-rock shaped short-bread biscuits. To washit all down, poureveryone a greenshamrock shake, coloured with greenfood dye and made

delicious with a touchof vanilla extract. Once the party hasfinished send everyonehome with lucky bagsfilled with gold choco-late coins and happy StPatrick’s Day cards. With all this wonderfulentertainment at ourfingertips, all we needis reasonable weatherto really have a great

This week we asked: “Doyou think there should bemore dog fouling disposalbins in the area?”

Q:

Yeah, I come down here a lot and I just find it veryhard to find any bin. I can only think about one inthe River Valley Park.

There are not enough. People have to carry the bags, and itis a good walk in the park to find a bin. They start throwingthem in the bushes and you can see the bags hanging intrees. So yes, at least two more bins are needed.

Eva Breitwieser

YOURVIEWWith reporter Eva Breitwieser

Yes, definitely! There are only two in the RiverValley park and not very well placed. I think that isone of the reasons why people throw their bags inthe bushes.

John Fallon, Swords

I don’t think so. There is only one, that I knowabout. I don’t see a lot of them. But I would defi-nitely say we could use at least one or two more.

There aren’t enough. It should be cleaner, to behonest. I walk regularly and the dog fouling is every-where. People who don't pick up their dog's dirtshould be prosecuted

Well, I would say there could be a least two more. Tobe honest I don’t have a dog, but I see a lot of peoplecarrying the bags.

Not enough at all! I wish there were more, becauseyou have to carry the bag for such a long time.

When you need need one, there wouldn't be anyto be seen. There should be more, at least one onthe main street.

Definitely, yes! I just walked down the park there inBalheary. There is not only one bin in it! There couldat least be more bins in the parks, they are needed.

Marie Nimmo, Swords

Actually, in Swords there isn’t any bin I can think of.But even in the parks around Swords there aren’tenough. There is only one bin that I know and youend up in carrying the bag home with you. Thereshould be one bin at the entrance to every park.

Yes, because there are no bins down here and it isridiculous. We all bring bags with us, but there isno bin to put the stuff into. It is very annoying.

On Friday, March 6th the students of LoretoBalbriggan held a fundraising day for theirLoreto sister school in Rumbek, SouthSudan. Over 1200 students and 90 staffmembers participated in the festivities. The

theme of the daywas“wrap up forRumbek”, witheach studentwearing the scarfof her year group.

The whole school community united in theultimate goal of providing an education fortheir fellow students in South Sudan. Fromthe bright neon green worn by the First

Years, right up to the more understated blueof the Sixth Years, students from differentyear groups combined colourfully for theirofficial school photograph - each out-posturing and out-posing one another in allof the colours of the rainbow. The real fun,as students admitted, was being as creativewith their scarves as possible. Some worethe scarves as headbands, some as beltsand some as waistcoats. Organisers of theevent Ms. Ní Ghreacháin, Ms. Finneran andMs. McHugh told how everyone seemedgenuinely happy to group together to raisefunds for a much needed cause: a schoolbuilding project in Rumbek, Sudan, foundedand funded by the Loreto Order. TheRumbek School was established in 2005 andhas now grown to a school of 180 studentsand 10 staff. This is the 10th anniversary ofthe fundraising event by Loreto Balbriggan.Mr. Fynes, the Principal, praised the effortsof all the Loreto Balbriggan students butwanted to thank, in particular, the Fifth YearSenior Prefects for all their hard work. The day’s festivities culminated with ateacher run which provided much entertain-ment for the students. Swords entrepreneurs won two out of threecategories at the recent presentation of the“2015 David Manley Emerging EntrepreneurAwards” Sarah Davis-Goff of Tramp Press, who was born in Donabate and who movedto Swords when her family was 14, won theEmerging Arts Entrepreneur category alongwith her business partner, Lisa Coen.Tramp Press is an independent publisher setup to change the landscape of what Irishpublishing is capable of accomplishing, andin so doing, brings great new writing toreaders. Tramp Press’s first two titles, ’Flight’by Oona Frawley and ’Dubliners 100’ byThomas Morris were both nominated for the2014 Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards.Dubliners 100 won ‘Best Irish-PublishedBook’. Sarah said, “By supporting excellentwriting, we can allow authors to flourishwithout the obligation to be accepted by theincreasingly conservative market. We workhard to market and promote our titles butbelieve that sales have been strong becauseof the quality of the work, and because of ourreputation for independent thinking.”Stephen Cluskey of wheelchairtaxi.ie, alsofrom Swords won the Emerging SocialEntrepreneur category. He said, “As a wheel-chair user of 12 years, I have always struggledto find suitable transport. I was stranded inDublin city centre one night until 6am afterspending four hours trying to get suitabletransport. Eventually I had to call my parentsto get out of bed and travel in to provide aservice which should already be there.” “A wheelchair taxi driver also damaged thespoke on the wheelchair one night and I hadto spend three days in bed while this gotfixed because drivers are not given anytraining when they receive their licence. These are the very real problems wheelchairusers face on a daily basis. So I foundedwheelchairtaxi.ie as a response to thatproblem. Nothing like it currently existsanywhere in the world,” he saidSarah and Stephen were presented with theirCertificates at the awards ceremony lastweek and both won €1,000 in cash.
