Four million for Saskatchewan livestock initiatives Saskatchewan’s Agricul-ture Minister Lyle Stewart and Member of Parliament Kelly Block for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar recently announced nearly $4.2 mil-lion in funding for 27 live-stock and forage research projects. “Saskatchewan produc-ers know the importance of investing in agricultural
research,” says Block. “The livestock projects announced today will help producers in-novate, which in turn will strengthen our economy here in Saskatchewan and across Canada.” “Our government is com-mitted to supporting agri-culture research,” Stewart adds. “The funding provid-ed through the Agriculture
Development Fund results in innovations that lead to increased productivity and profi tability for our produc-ers.” Projects receiving funding will: • Develop new vaccines; • Improve yield and mar-bling in beef cattle; • Develop new, sustainable forage legumes;
• Improve fertility and re-productive effi ciency in live-stock; • Research the effect ergot-contaminated feed has on cow-calf operations; and, • Develop feed for optimum performance in livestock. Support for these projects is provided through the Sas-katchewan Agriculture De-velopment Fund (ADF) and
is part of a record $27.7 mil-lion provincial agricultural research budget in 2013-14. Earlier this month, the fed-eral and provincial govern-ments announced $7 million in funding for 46 crop-related research projects, bringing this year’s total ADF invest-ment to nearly $11.2 million.

Creating Beautiful Smiles For Over 35 Years
Recent economic and political events which have affected the stability of world markets should serve as a reminder of the potential volatility these markets hold for inves-tors. Whether it is concern over the uncertainty of the European or Chinese economies, the political situation in the US or the decline in the Canadian Dollar, these factors can put unprotected investors at risk. While some try to time the markets to better protect themselves, his-torically these strategies have a poor rate of success because no one can accu-rately predict the future. You can protect your investment portfolio against market volatility and downturns by utiliz-ing a long term asset allo-cation strategy. This involves allocating your portfolio into a number of different asset classes as well as geographical regions to avoid having all your investment eggs in one basket. The appropri-ate asset and geographi-cal weighting is depen-dent on a number of fac-tors including your age, risk tolerance and when the funds will be needed. To be successful, the asset allocation approach to investing needs to be viewed as a long term strategy. Studies have clearly proven this strate-gy effective in reducing the overall risk and increasing the overall rate of return on your portfo-lio. Studies have also shown the importance of proper allocation: it is responsible for over 90 per cent of your portfolio’s return.
Asset allocation reduces risk because not all of your investment assets increase and decrease in value at the same rate or at the same time. Since the different asset classes grow at different rates, your future portfolio allo-cation may end up quite different from the original mix established in your plan. To ensure the con-tinuing profitability of your portfolio and to avoid putting yourself at risk in the event of a major mar-ket change, it is impera-tive that you implement a formal re-balancing pro-gram on at least an annu-al basis. A properly structured program of asset alloca-tion within your RRSP portfolio provides a disci-plined approach to invest-ing. Investments are sold that have risen in value and those that are on sale are bought. One word of caution: if the investment vehicle you want to real-ize profit on is a mutual fund, a deferred sales charge may be incurred if you are switching between fund families. However, these redemption charges will usually apply only if the amount re-allocated exceeds 10 per cent of the value of your investment. In the long term this strat-egy will help to balance
the overall performance of your portfolio and lower the chance of significant loss when declines in cer-tain asset classes occur. When re-balancing your non-registered invest-ments, additional implica-tions such as taxes incurred need to be con-sidered. In tax deferred investments such as equi-ty funds, you do not real-ize the profits you have made until you redeem your investment. The realization of those gains upon sale increases your tax liability, the extent of which is dependent on the amount your investment has appreciated and your tax bracket. The key to long term investing success is to cre-ate and implement an investment plan based on proper asset allocation, review and re-balancing on a regular basis. This ensures you will maximize the returns on your port-folio over the long term while minimizing the amount of risk your port-folio is exposed to.

A large segment of Saskatchewan’s popula-tion will again have ac-cess to infl uenza immu-nizations, following the arrival of a shipment of FluMist vaccine. As of Wednesday, Sas-katchewan is expanding availability of vaccine to all people between two and 59 years of age who are eligible to receive FluMist. The province has received a shipment of 107,000 doses of Flu-Mist nasal vaccine, con-fi rmed it is in good order, and begun the process of distributing it to health regions. Injectable vaccine will also now be made avail-able to residents 60 and over, supplies permit-ting. More injectable

Ed, my neighbor next door, has a remarkable constitution and atti-tude. This last week we had wind chills ranging from -40 to -50. It seemed to me that, in that time, I froze up along with my van and neither of us will thaw out. In all the cold wind chills, I threatened to go to bed, and not get up until after April. I have put on weight over the holidays, and I could live off my ample, body fat, I’m sure. Ed sees the bitterly cold weather as morale building weather. He claims such weather clears your mind and gives you motivation for life. How such weather could give me motiva-tion for anything, I’ll never know as I cannot even keep my eye glass-es from frosting up. “Aim at nothing, and you’ll hit every time,” Ed claims. When there is a wicked wind chill, no one goes outside without a clear aim for where they are going. Folks are very focused on doing what they need to do, and they don’t waste time in doing it. When it is bitterly cold no one gets bogged down in minute details. Ed says that such weather brings out his cheerful side as he loves to smile and speak to folks anywhere he sees them out in the cold. He claims that the more
that you laugh at the weather, the better you’ll feel as it lets the weather know who is boss. He also maintains that, after a couple of weeks of brutally cold weather and wind chills, folks see their lives passing before their eyes. They either grin and gladly bear the weather, or make plans to move to a warmer climate. Ed is sure that most just stay put because they wouldn’t leave even if they could leave. Ed claims that he will never have enough wisdom to move some-where where the climate is warmer. Wisdom seems to reflect individual think-ing and attitudes. Having wisdom, or showing good judgment, means different things to different folks. Today, it seems wisdom is lim-itless. So many wise sayings or aphorisms keep popping up, such as: “Seat belts are not as confining as wheel-chairs. No one ever says, ‘It’s only a game,’ when their team is winning.
Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.” The world has never lacked wise observa-tions and general truths. The Bible shows the best wisdom is found in God. God is all-knowing or omniscient. He is good, kind and desiring our welfare. Our God uses his cleverness and wisdom to act in com-passion and grace toward us because he is love. Scripture makes it clear that it is foolish to say there is no God, or that there is no need for God. God knows there are no new sins; the old ones just get used more readily with less regret. Heaven and hell still exist, and they are not holiday destinations. We need faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ God’s Son, who lived, died and arose for us. True wisdom is found in God and his word, the Bible. Are we wise enough to draw close to God, who is waiting to draw close to us?

Grain Growers of Can-ada (GGC) farmers re-cently met with railway offi cials and grain com-panies at a Ministerial roundtable to discuss the current state of af-fairs related to the grain backlog. “We were satisfi ed with today’s meeting and the direct dialogue that has begun with the railways and grain com-panies. We appreciate the federal government’s initiative to provide a forum to voice concerns,” says Brian Otto, Grain Growers’ Director repre-sentative for the West-ern Barley Growers As-sociation. “At the meeting we asked the railways what the plan is to alleviate this year’s immediate backlog of grain and ship larger volumes of grains and oilseeds in the future.” The Minister of Agri-culture, Gerry Ritz, or-ganized this roundtable meeting with the entire value chain, in response to the growing backlog of grain, bringing every-one together, in order to address the current situ-ation. “We want to thank Minister Ritz for bring-ing all parties together at this meeting as a chance to engage di-rectly with the railways and we hope to begin an ongoing dialogue for the future. Rail service affects the entire value chain; farmers all the way down to the grocery store at the end of your street,” says Gary Stan-ford, Grain Growers of Canada President. “We want to empha-size to the railways that this is the new normal. Better crop genetics and new crop options along with good weather means there could be more grain to ship next year,” says Stanford. Manitoba Pulse Grow-ers, a member of the
GGC participated in the meeting with the rail-ways. “We need to get the grain moving because many farmers may not be paid for last year’s harvest until after spring planting,” says Kyle Friesen, President of the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association and farmer Director on the Grain Growers of Canada. “This is already causing lost sales, things need to improve otherwise this will translate into a se-rious cash fl ow issue for farmers when they need to buy seed and inputs this spring.” Announced in Win-nipeg was a new proj-ect which will measure performance for grain traffi c helping to gauge rail service supply chain effi ciency and reliabil-ity. The Grain Growers of Canada supports the project, which will be led by Pulse Canada, a collaborative effort with Canadian Canola Grow-ers Association (CCGA), the Western Grain El-evators Association (WGEA) and the Inland Terminals Association of Canada (ITAC) and other participating part-ners. “We commend Pulse Canada for taking lead-ership on the rail fi le and look forward to good data to help communi-cate our long standing rail service challenges,” says Stanford. “Filling farmers’ ca-pacity needs and in-creased shipping volume means more business for the railways,” says Stanford. “ W e hope to see action com-ing out of this meeting and look forward to con-tinuing a direct dialogue with the railways. We need solutions to fi x the immediate issues and need to know there is a long term plan in place so this doesn’t happen again.”

READY SET SKI! – On Saturday January 18 members ofthe Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club spent the day learning to skate ski with Warren Popick instructing. For years the club has set tracks for classic ski style, but with a new groomer the club has recently purchased they can now offer both styles of skiing at Deer Park. The skate ski is more of an olympic style of skiing and the trails just need to be groomed fl at rather than the tracks that the classic style needs. “With having trails on Deer Park Golf Course there is plenty of room to offer the wider trails needed for this way of skiing,” says Barry Rogers President of the Ski Club. “We now have eight kms of trails on the course and with the varied terrain it is a good work out no matter what ski style you do.” The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club is hosting a “Learn to Skate and Ski Day” on February 2, 2014. “We have ski’s that the public can come and try out and get some basic instruc-tion on both the classic and skate. The club house will open at 11 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. We will be serving up hot dogs and refreshments during the day for those participate.” Sunshine and Ski from Regina is again coming in to do a waxing clinic, adds Rogers, and they are bringing some ski products that will be available for purchase. Roy Lanaway, club member and organizer of the event, hopes that by hav-ing the products on site people who want to purchase can have the opportunity to that day as well. The club would like to give anyone who has considered xc skiing in the past and just wants to try it, a chance to do it at no cost. “We also want people that have been skiing on skis for decades to give the new boots and ski a try. It surprises some of our skiers that have the old three pin style, how light and smooth gliding the new skis are. Which just makes for a pleasurable day on skis.
