    The History ofCO-Op'S

by Ted HanmerIn 1844 in The town ofRochdale in LankshireCounty England, 28 flannel weavers pooled onepound sterling each an dused this 28 pounds toestablish the tiny RochdaleEquitable Pioneer'sSoci-ety.This Equitable Society orCo-op opened a oneroom shop in a back lane.In this shop they soldgoods to themselves atfair market prices. This wasin marked contrast withthe company that oftentook advantage of thedifficulties that the poorerworkers ha d in reachingmore reasonable alternatives in a time before public transit. This was no t thatdifferent from the difficulties that students at Ryerson ha d in travelling toareas with affordable rentsin 1968. This situation motivated a small group ofpoor students to buildNeill-Wycik Co-op in 1970.

3The Rochdale Co-op of1844 paid members afixed return on theirinvestment. The money

that they made afterpaying expenses an dinterest went to the members as a dividend, basedon the value of the goodsthat they had purchased, rather than on their capital investment. The same isaccomplished at NeillWycik by adjusting yourrents for the next year upor down depending onthe success of the previous year.In 1868, the many smallretail consumer co-opsthat had copied the Ro-chdale model formed theCo-operative WholesaleSociety so that they couldbring to their members theadvantage of cutting outthe profits of the middleman.By 1949 10,000,000people in Britain weremembers of co-ops and atleast half the populationobtained at least an indirect benefit from themovement.Today the co-operative

movement is probably themost successful international association of volunteer organization with tt Iepossible exception of t heChristian Churchs.

Agricultural Co-opsand Credit Unions beganat the same time in Germany in 1862 with theforming of a village bank.By 1930 in Germany therewere over 36,000 co-operative banks (credit unions).Agricultural co-opsmade their greatest headway in agriculural countries with large numbers ofsmall land holders such asDenmark, Ireland, an dNew Zealand. There farmers co-ops become animportant factor by theend of the century.

The first Co-op wasestablished in Canada atStellarton Nova Scotia andthe co-operative movement is now an immensepart of the commercial lifeof Canada.Unfortunatelyeach region has specialized in on e or two areas ofopportunity such as Quebecwith its Caisse Populair, Saskatchewan with its

4retail stores and wheatpools an d Ontario with itshousing co-ops an d farmers co-ops. Hopefully, allregions of Canada willexpand into all opportunity areas with the resultthat the co-op movementwill become even biggerstill.

Co-ops have for anumber of years experimented successfully withworker operated co-ops inSpain an d to a lesser extent in other areas of Eu-rope. This is increasinglyhappening in Canadaand is one of the excitingdevelopments on theCanadian horizon as weapproach the 21 st century. In conclusion, why no tbecome a member of theactive group in the NeillWycik Co-op by sittings ona committee or running forthe Board of Directors. Youtoo can turn a volunteeractivity into an interestinglifetime career as I did withmy experiences at Campus Co-op in the sixties.

WYCIKRULESThese are the rules. TheBoard of Directors is responsible for the operationof the co -op. You an devery other member, through the electedboard, make the rules anddecide on the policiesthat affect the practicesof the co-op. So if youfeel there is somethingwrong or unjust, use thepower of the members tochange it!DON'T PLAY YOUR STEREOFULL BLASTH

DO NOT TAMPER WITH FIRE-SAFETY EQUIPMENT.Extinguishers, hoses, pullstations an d detectors areall ou t of bounds, unlessyou need them in anemergency.NO VIOLENT OR INTIMIDATING BEHAVIOUR.Report any such behaviour to security. Intimidat-

Walking on thebrightest side of th e streetyou'll find lots to look at:street vendors, prostitutes, homeless people -it 'squite the scene!Places to stay away fromafter dark or on quiet daysinclude Allen Gardens (a tthe corner of Jarvis andGerrard across from Harvey's) and other placeseast along Gerrard,Carlton and Dundas.Walking home from thesubway is okay too, justdon't take shortcuts

through parking lots andstay on the main streets.Church and Carlton aren'ttoo bad, bu t there arefewer people in that areaat night. So remember, on those

nights when your neighbour's stereo has

$pounded on your brainto o long, or you just wantto be alone, it's okay togo for a walk. You'll get toknow the area quickly andin no time you'll be assuring people at home thatlife in the big city isn't asscary as it sounds. Personal security is mainly amatter of common sense.Always lock the door, even if you're just goingdown the hall.Keep your unit door shut(it locks automatically). We have lots of nice people in this building bu tthere are always a fewbad apples in the bunch.History has shown thatthere is one dishonest typefor every 100 members. These are in addition tothe few who manage toinfiltrate front lobby security. A locked door is yourbest protection. Your roomkey is also the front doorkey. Shortly after move-in,security locks the frontdoor in the evenings andon weekends. AnswersQ:How do I get access tothe computer room, bil-liards room, dark room, the barbecue, and all theother neat facilities that goalong with the building?A:Make sure you have aN.W. I.D. card and watchfor notices throughoutSeptemer for Core Grouporientation nights. Theleader of each facility willbrief you on the equipment an d operating rules, then give you a sticker foryour I.D. card. You ma yhave to sign a waiver formstating N.W. is no t responsible for injuries, and thatyou understand how touse the equipment. Whenyou want to use one ofthe facilites, just sign ou tthe key at the front deskwith your I.D . card. Insome facilities such as thewoodshop you must firstpass a brief test. If some-

29on e else has alreadysigned ou t the facility, youmust exchange I.D. cardsat the front desk not justexchange the facility key. This way, only one personat a time is responsible forthe facility.Q:What household sup-plies are available foreach unit, and where do Iget them? Thesupplies are located insidea closet, but you'll have toknock to ge t into the unit. Some units will ask thatyou sign ou t the vacuum, since this is the most commonly asked for item. Thevacuums are onlycleaned once a year, unless it breaks, so usecommon sense whencleaning the morning afterthe night before!Q:What if something goes

What about theother venues in town?A: If it's a popular concert,it will be announced onvarious radio stations as tothe date and time ofticket sales. Call Ticketmaster. The floor gets slippery as well (with a littlehelp from clubs anddrunks). It's a little liketaking a steam bath withyour clothes on. Youshould know, however, that an air conditioningsystem now keeps theplace dry - as long assomeone remembers toturn the thing on.Q:How can I get to theairport fast and cheap?A:The easiest way to ge tthere is by taking the GreyCoach Airport Express bus,it leaves the Delta ChelseaHotel at twenty-minuteintervals past the hour.
