Rebecca  McKinney,  Director    Robin  Greene,  Program  Manager

DPS  National  History  Day  2017  Welcome   to   the   annual   Denver   Public   Schools   National   History   Day  Competition.  National  History  Day  provides  an  exciting  opportunity  for  students  to  learn  about  historical  issues,  ideas,  people,  and  events.  This  program  encourages   academic  achievement   and   intellectual  growth.   In  addition   to   acquiring   useful   historical   knowledge   and   perspective,  students   develop   skills   in   research,   critical   thinking,   analysis,   and  problem   solving.   Students   select   a   topic   in   local,   national   or   world  history  and  investigate  its  historical  significance  and  relationship  to  the  annual  theme  by  conducting  extensive  primary  and  secondary  research.  During   the   2016-‐2017   school   year,   National   History   Day   invited  students   to   research   topics   related   to   the   theme   Taking   A   Stand   In  History.    We   hope   that   you   enjoy   the   many   papers,   exhibits,   performances,  documentaries,   and   websites   presented   by   Denver   Public   Schools  middle   and   high   school   students   at   today’s   competition.   First,   second  and  third  place  winners  in  each  category  and  division  will  advance  to  the  National  History  Day  in  Colorado  Competition  on  the  Auraria  Campus  on  May  6th,  2017.  The  top  two  entries  in  each  category  and  division  at  the  Colorado  contest  will  compete  in  National  History  Day  at  the  University  of  Maryland  in  June.    Final   competition   rounds   are   scheduled   when   there   are   too   many  entries  in  a  particular  category  and  division  to  allow  one  team  of  judges  to  view  them  all.   In  these  instances,  entries  are  divided  into  first  round  judging   groups.   The   top   placing   entries   from   each   first   round   group  advance   to   a   final   round,  where   they   are   evaluated  by   a  new   group  of  judges.   In   today’s   competition,   final   rounds   will   occur   in   Junior  Individual   &   Group   Exhibits   and   Junior   Individual   Documentaries.   All  exhibits   must   remain   on   display   until   the   final   judging   round   is  completed  and  the  judges  have  left  the  gyms.  At  that  time,  students  may  remove   their   exhibits.   Exhibits   may   also   be   removed   immediately  following  the  awards.

Please join us for the Awards Ceremony in the Auditorium at 4:15pm!
