COMMON GROUND & NEXT STEPS
WORKING AGENDA
• 10-15 year road map for the future
• Grounded on your vision for learning
• Living/breathing document
• Physically & fiscally responsible
• Allows logical implementation over
time
WHAT IS A
MASTER PLAN?
To co-create a clear and compelling vision for the
campus and to align the educational program
and physical design with this vision.
DESIGN WITH, NOT FORwelcome to the design team!
RELAX & ALLOW. Constant self monitoring will get in
the way of group performance. Let go…
DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHO GETS CREDIT. When everyone genuinely collaborates, everyone ends up being
more creative.
CLARITY IS NOT A VIRTUE. If everything you say is
detailed and explicit, you won’t give your collaborators room to
run. Put ideas out there that are half-baked.
CREATIVITY IS RISKY. Nurture an environment
that rewards failure. Successful creative teams are the ones
who fail the most often.
GROUND RULES

LIMITING BELIEFS:{ i.e. preconceptions }
• Public school funding “Not enough
money”
• The system is powerless to change
• Only in it for themselves short term
• Having a set mindset, not being
flexible
• Thinking we can’t find common
ground
• Logistical reality is difficult
• Perceptions of what schools should look
like/feel like/be like
• Pie in the sky, will it ever happen
• DPS’s ability to follow – through with
bond money; won’t do what they say.
• Not knowing the future; don’t let not
being able to predict future needs limit us
• Politics – Country/City/Community
• Existing buildings can’t be changed
LIMITING BELIEFS:
Education is shifting rapidly across the US and around the globe, what are some examples of what other school are doing?

FLEXIBIL ITY
“It’s education that’s meant to take us into this future that we can’t grasp. Nobody has a clue…what the world will look like in 5 year’s time, and yet we’re meant to be educating them for it.”
• Rapidly (re)configurable
• Relentless variety
• Mobile furnishings & tech
• Shared ownership of space
• Visual transparency
• invites INQUIRY (not passive)
• Learning happens everywhere
