BREMONT WATCH COMPANY

The Bremont Watch Company would like to

congratulate you most sincerely on the

purchase of your P-51 chronograph. This

particular watch has been developed over a

number of years through the company’s desire

to make a truly unique timepiece that quite

simply cannot be replicated again.

The inspiration for many of the Bremont

timepieces come from the world of aviation,

no more so than the P-51 and its predecessor,

the EP120, whose roots lie in the original

wartime chronographs still found in these

historic aircraft.

This watch is made in a limited edition of 251

of which this is No ...............................

P -51 CHRONOGRAPH

Time began for Bremont when Nicholas and Giles English, two

brothers with a shared passion for aviation, embarked on a

project to make beautifully crafted pilot’s chronometers of

exceptional quality. Inspired amongst other things by their love

of historic aircraft, the watches had to be durable and

mechanically special. They would be built in limited numbers by

hand at their own dedicated atelier in the UK and Switzerland.

Today, the workshop produces no less than twenty different

models including some very special limited editions. With the

passion that continues to fuel all of the Bremont ranges was a

desire to produce a number of truly limited edition watches – a

watch limited through necessity.

Original aluminium metal from the aircraft fuselage is integrated

into both the dial of the P-51 and the movement of the timepiece.

The dial itself is inspired by the clocks found in the wartime P-51

aircraft. The 43mm hardened steel Trip-Tick® case, using

Bremont’s B-EBE2000 technology, integrates the new rotating

‘Roto-Click®’ inner bezel that houses four ball-bearings inside

the case. As with many of Bremont’s latest watch designs, the

P-51 is assembled at the company’s atelier in England rather

than their workshop in Biel-Bienne in Switzerland, and houses a

modified Swiss BE-54A automatic chronometer movement that

also shows UTC time. The watch will be limited to only 251

pieces. Every watch has been hand-crafted using exceptional

amounts of skill, time and effort to include original parts of the

1944 P-51 Mustang, ‘Fragile-but-Agile’, saved during restoration.

Lieutenant Bert Lee and his P-51 Mustang

P -51’s H ISTORY

The Bremont P-51 chronometer and chronograph is built with

original parts from the famous 1944 Mustang WWII aircraft

P-51K-10 (serial number 44-12016) - a Pacific war veteran also

known as ‘Fragile but Agile’.

P-51K-10 (serial number 44-12016) rolled off the North

American Aviation assembly line in Dallas, Texas, on 18

December 1944 and was then loaded onto a ship on the 15th

January 1945 for an assignment in the Far East. It was to take

part in the American campaign to retake the Philippine Islands

from the Japanese.

On arrival in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, the aircraft was

assigned to the 342nd Fighter Squadron of the 348th Fighter

Group, which then was stationed at the San Marcelino airbase,

just north of Manila Bay.

Lt. Bert Lee Jr. was assigned to fly the aircraft and was credited

with two confirmed victories during the war, which accounts for

the two Japanese flags painted below his name on the plane.

One was a Japanese A6M “Zero” fighter near Manila and the

other a twin-engine “Betty” bomber. A lot of Lt. Lee’s missions

in the P-51 were ground support in what was then Indochina.

Lee and his Mustang both survived the war. Following its time in

the US Air Force, ‘Fragile but Agile’ then spent time serving with

both the Swedish and Israeli military before eventually being

restored by pilot and collector Stephen Grey and The Fighter

Collection based at Duxford in the UK. In 2009 the Mustang

was acquired by another collector and good friend of Stephen’s

– Dan Friedkin, based in Houston, Texas.

THE BREMONT P -51AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH

Your P-51 Chronometer shows you the time in hours,

minutes, seconds and the date. It also shows the time in

another time zone using its 24-hour hand (or UTC hand).

With the chronograph you can measure up to 30

minutes (in minutes and seconds) through the ‘Time of

Trip’ chronograph dial positioned at 12 o’clock.

The mechanical movement with automatic winding has a

free-swinging rotor that keeps the mainspring wound via

the motion of your wrist. The movement in your P-51 has

25 jewels, runs at 28,800 bph and has a 42-hour power

reserve once fully wound.

The watch is water resistant to 100m (10 ATM) and the

dial is protected by a dual anti-reflective sapphire crystal

that is retained securely (in the case of low pressure

found at extreme altitudes).

The case of your watch is made from an especially-

hardened stainless steel. To ensure that this rather

special watch continues to run beautifully for years to

come, you must follow a few important operating

instructions.

THE BREMONT P -51INSTRUCTIONS

WINDING THE WATCH

The P-51 can be wound from position I by rotating the

crown in a clockwise motion. The movement will

automatically start with just a few revolutions of the

rotor, however it is better to wind the movement fully

with about 30 revolutions of the crown. By doing this you

will achieve maximum accuracy and have a power

reserve of about 42 hours – even when the watch is not

on your wrist.

SETTING THE DATE

You can adjust the date by gently pulling out the crown

to position II. You can now change the date by rotating

the crown clockwise. DO NOT CHANGE THE DATE

BETWEEN 8PM AND 2AM, AS THIS MAY DAMAGE THE

MOVEMENT. This is when the pinions are being

repositioned to carry out the automatic date change.

SETTING THE TIME

Pull the crown out to position III. This will stop the

movement. You can now position the minute hand

exactly. To start the second hand, push the crown back

to position I. When setting the time, it is worth noting

that the date change always takes place at mid-night

(24.00).

To change the UTC (or 24 hour hand), pull the crown out

to position II and rotate the crown in an anti-clockwise

direction. Ensure that the crown is pushed back to

position I after setting the watch.

ROTATING THE BEZEL

Your P-51 is fitted with an internally rotating bezel with

minute calibration. The bezel can be moved, both in a

clockwise and anti-clockwise direction using the crown

on your watch positioned at 8 o’clock.

CHRONOMETER TESTING

Every Bremont watch is chronometer tested and is

accompanied by a performance certificate issued by the

‘Contrôle Official Suisse des Chronomètres’ (COSC) to

show that the mechanical movement has passed all of

the rigorous precision tests - a necessity of the

chronometer designation.

The chronometer certification which takes 15 days to

complete over several different temperature ranges and

watch positions, means that the average daily variation

rate must be between -4 and +6 seconds. With 86,400

seconds in a single day, this gives Bremont’s watches an

accuracy in the region of 99.998%.

WATCH CARE

The testing that the Bremont Watch Company puts all of

its watches through may appear excessive - whether it

is for time-keeping precision for every chronometer,

temperature and shock and scratch resistance, or the

Page 14: MUSTANG - Bremont Watch Company · purchase of your P-51 chronograph. This particular watch has been developed over a number of years through the company’s desire to make a truly

pressure testing in all our models.

Although Bremont watches have more than proved their

resilience before they are released from our workshop,

we want to ensure that the enjoyment that comes from

wearing a Bremont watch lasts generations. We

therefore recommend that, where possible, the following

tips for watch care are observed:

CLEANING

Use soapy water and a small brush, followed by cloth to

clean metal and sapphire.

CROWN

Ensure that the crown is pushed back to position l after

setting the watch.

SEA WATER

Wash with fresh water if possible following exposure to

saline water.

SHOCKS AND JOLTS

Try to avoid any shocks to watch.

MAGNETIC FIELDS

Try to avoid placing watch on electrical equipment,

especially loudspeakers.

TEMPERATURE

Keeping the watch in contact with the wrist will help

minimise any exposure to extremes.

CHEMICALS

Wash watch with warm fresh water if it is exposed to

solvents etc. to avoid damage to seals and watch straps.

SERVICING YOUR P-51

Every part of your watch has been carefully chosen from

the best selection of materials available. In spite of this,

a number of parts will always be subject to natural wear.

It is therefore important that these points of wear are

always kept lubricated. We therefore recommend that

you have a maintenance service carried out on your

watch every 3 to 5 years.

Servicing of your Bremont watch should only be carried

out by a certified Bremont agent. To find your nearest

repair and service centre please contact your Authorised

Dealer or Bremont +44 (0) 845 0940 690 or info@
