  • 1. Andrew Goodwins Musictheories Andrew Goodwins theories about music videos show how we can identify different genres of music and different genders in music videos Some of Andrew Goodwins theories relate to the music, the lyrics the visuals and treatment of genders within the music video. We can use some of Goodwins theories to help create our music videos and we can also challenge them to create something which contradicts the theories. The videos in this Presenation show how music videos prove Andrew Goodwins theories.

2. MOTIFS Motifs are used in music videos to enhance the lyrics or visuals, they can also be used to create a theme for a song. Coles fight for this love Cheryl shows clearly one example of motifs that enhance the lyrics. The song has key words like fight Love This is shown through the red strip which runs across each layer. This creates a theme for the music video. My group and I could use a motif to enhance our lyrics andUshers Love in this club has a similar visuals in our music video.motif with the flash of light across eachlayer, however the light does notenhance the lyrics. The light creates a mood for the musicvideo and also sets the location as themusic video is set in the club. The lightis used to trigger target audienceexperience as the target audience for RD (ruff Diamondz)teens whomethis artist/song are Do it like wouldregularly go to the club and experience has the same kind of motif with thesimilar things. light flashing across the screen. The light is blue which matches the meaning of the lyrics as they imply 3. CAMERA ANGLES The camera angles are important in Music videos. They are used toestablish the location. To present the band or to single out importantelements of the video through close up. One of Goodwins theories is thatevery music video must have close ups. Here in Beyonces single ladies there are minimal camera angle however the video includes Zooms and 360 camera techniques. Although the video doesnt include many camera angles the camera does zoom into a close up where we see the artists hand across her face. This is appropriate as the song is about putting a ring on a finger. Therefore the close up amplified the lyrics. The close up here is used to enhance the lyric. When the artists says Stop we get a close up of her closing her fist which implies that she is stopping or ending something. This shows Goodwins theory clearly of how close ups in music videos are needed to enhance the lyrics and possibly the music as well. 4. MUSIC AND VISUALS Here in Lilly Allens smile the musiccompletely contradicts the visuals. The musichas an upbeat reggae melody which creates ahappy tone however the visuals all showsomething sad/bad happening to either theartist or the male performing in the video. Thisalso proves Goodwins theory that Music cancontradict/ amplify or illustrate. 5. VOYERISM AND SCOPOPHILIA These two videos show how women in music videos are seen as sexual symbols for the music industry. We see how scopophilia and voyeurism is used to present female artists. In one video intertextuality is even used to present the 7. OVERALL Overall I have seen how Goodwins theories are used in music videos and how they act as an aid to the video to enhance its meaning and to present the artists in a way that will appeal to their audiences. I have also seen that even different genres of music carry the same characteristics proving that Goodwins theories apply to all genres across the music industry.
