Goodwin’s Theory on Analysing Music VideosGenre characteristics:

The genre characteristic of indie music is that there is usually a boys band. Plus a commonly used instrument in the video is the guitar.

Additionally the mis en scene you see an urban area which is common in a indie music video.

Their hairstyle is also very indie style.

Page 2: Goodwins theory to music videos

The relationship between lyrics and visuals is illustrative but not at all the times. When he says “I love her because she moves in her own way” and at the same time you see a pair of feet walking.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals:

Another example is him singing “Cos I’m a better man Moving on better things.” You see him throwing away old pair of shows and walking in a new pair. This makes the relationship less illustrative and more amplified as he is talking not actually talking about a pair of shoes.

Page 3: Goodwins theory to music videos

Relationship between music and visuals:

In the video at a point when the artist is singing slowly, the music is slow and at the same time the video is slightly in slow motion.

But there is also a part in the video where the music is being played at a fast pace and at the same time you have the editing rhythm getting faster, have many jump cuts of the band adding to the effect of the fast pace.

The relationship between music and visuals is illustrative which can be shown in two ways:

This might be done to great an effect

Page 4: Goodwins theory to music videos

The Demands of Record Label:This will include lots of close up of theartist, and a development of motifs.

In this video there have been several different close ups of the singer so this part of Goodwin theory has been applied.

A motif used throughout the song is the guitar as it appears at various scenes the song. So also this part of Goodwin's theory has been applied. The guitar has been used as it has a connection to the indie genre of the music. These demands could help the marketing of the product because guitars are an instrument which make the artist look good in the video and attracts the more audience, who themselves play such instruments.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body:

In this video Goodwin’s theory has slightly been applied as there are females visible but the treatment is not so voyeuristic.

Page 6: Goodwins theory to music videos

There is often intertextual reference:

There is no intertextual reference in this video. This is done possible to make sure that the audience pays only attention to their video.

This will help sell the product as they are only showing their product and not referring to anything else. WhichWill make the audience remember the video.

Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based, how each concept is

used:This video of the kooks is narrative based which can be recognized from the title “she moves in her own way”, this shows us that the song is about a girl.

Applying Goodwin’s theory:

1) Genre Characteristics:

The View, Same Jeans:

A common characteristic is a instrument which very often is a guitar, it is used in a lot of the scenes in the song.

2) Relationship between lyrics and visuals:

The relationship between lyrics and visuals is illustrative. This can be made known when he sings “Everybody's dressing up, I am dressing down” at the same time you see him sitting in public where people around him are dressed up smart in suits however the artist himself is the opposite. He is in everyday clothing, this clearly demonstrates the lyrics. Plus it could also refer to the mood of the artist. The people in suits are sitting straight and active reading newspaper, yet the artist isn’t sitting straight and looks tired. This shows that it may be amplified as well as he is singing about the mood which is going down.

Another example is when he sings “I've had the same jeans on, for four days now” this again fits illustrative way as at the beginning you see him waking up and wearing a jean, later on you see him again waking up and again wearing a jeans this signifies the lyrics.

3) Relationship between music and visuals:

There is a illustrative relationship asWhen the music is more softer sound you see him in his house, where the background seems to be a soft colour.

However when he is on stage in a performance the music changes and is louder, relating to the audienceWho are dancing and enjoying the music. This shows that the music pace and volume being played relates to the scenes location of the song.

Page 10: Goodwins theory to music videos

4)The demands of record label will include the need of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.

This part of Goodwin’s theory has clearly been applied as there are many close up’s of the artist’s face.

A motif could be the usual indie hairstyle. As the whole band has similar hairstyles, it will repeat itself many times in the song and make it known to the audience as indie hairstyle.

5) There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body:

The treatment of the female body possibly is voyeuristic treatment as you see a boy with lipstick marks on his face but it’s not clear as both a seen sleeping, which also gives the female a slightly naive representation.

At a different scene of the song again the notion of looking at the female body isn’t so voyeuristic as their are only shown as a part of the big audience.

6) There is often intertextual reference:

There is no intertextual reference in this video.

Page 12: Goodwins theory to music videos

7) Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based, or concept based and how each element is used:

The video is mostly primarily performance based as you see the artist singing on stage for a big part of the video. But it may also be slightly narrative based. As he is singing about how is wearing the same jeans since four days.

Vampire Weekend : Holiday

Genre Characteristics:

There are not many genre characteristics shown. One of them might be that it is just a boys band which is like in majority of the songs.

A second one would be the use of guitar in the video which has been used.

Page 14: Goodwins theory to music videos

Relationship between lyrics & visuals:The relationship here is a mixture of contradicting, amplified and at some other parts it is illustrative.

However there are 2 parts where there’s an amplified relationship. While he sings: “But if I wait for a holidayCould it stop my fear?” At the same time you have the other band members standing behind him like guards i.e. Possibly giving him protection from his fearOr as a support.Secondly when he sings: “To go away on a summers day never seemed so clear” At the word “clear” the band members standing over him, suddenly drop and the artists background becomes clear.

For instance while singing : “Holiday, still so far away Our republic on the beach.” At the same time you have the indie band at a beach which makes it illustrative.Plus the title which is “Holiday” and a lot of the scenes are related to holiday sceneries.

Page 15: Goodwins theory to music videos

Relationship between music & visuals:The relationship here has to do a lot with the cutting rhythm.

This means while the music is at a slow pace and soft the scene is longer however at a faster pace of the music the scenes a shorter and have a faster cutting rhythm. Plus the music becomes louder again and you can hear drums playing more prominently.

Page 16: Goodwins theory to music videos

The Demands of record label:This would require lots of close ups of the artist. This has been applied but slightly as there are not a lot of them. Using these close ups will help the marketing as it creates an catchy effect ,draws the viewer closer and to involve them in what is happening.

Page 17: Goodwins theory to music videos

There is frequent reference to notice of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment

of the female body :

There is a voyeuristic treatment of the female body as they are shown smiling at the band in beach clothing. Additionally having a row of females laying down like this makes the female body more appealing, all of this creates attraction towards the male audience of the band, which will help the marketing.

There is often Intertextual reference:

There is no Intertextual reference visible in this video .

Page 19: Goodwins theory to music videos

Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based, how

each concept is used:

This song is narrative based due to the title and the lyrics are alike to what is happening in the video.

Even though indie music videos are performance based this video does not have any performance of the band.

Page 20: Goodwins theory to music videos

Razorlight: Wire to WireGenre characteristics:

There are not many genre characteristics used for the fact that there are no usual indie genre instruments such as a guitar.

Still there’s one characteristic which is very frequent; a boys band.

Page 21: Goodwins theory to music videos

Relationship between lyrics and visuals:

There is a illustrative relationship but possibly also an amplified relationship. For example the artist sings “A sin you swallow for the rest of your life?” At that scene you see a close up to his mouth which refers to “swallowing” . Plus you see a light matchstick in shallow focus which may as well refer to “sin”.

However it may as well be contradicting as he sings about a “sin” although he is wearing white which refers to purity .

Page 22: Goodwins theory to music videos

Relationship between music and visuals:

The relationship between music and the visuals is illustrative as the cutting rhythm and pace matches quite exactly to the video.

For example if the artist voice becomes louder so does the music become clearer to her in the background.

Similarly if the music in the background is slightly low and not so clearly hear able then the artists voice is not so high.

Page 23: Goodwins theory to music videos

Demand of record label:This will include lots of close ups of the artist which has definitely been used in the video as nearly the whole video has been shot in close ups. This could have been done because the close ups express what the artist in a better way , which increases the interaction towards audience. Additionally it will make it more emotive with the costumes, so again increasing chances of marketing.Plus the motif which it requires could be the matchstick which all the band members are holding. As it is very prominent & the audience will remember it.

Page 24: Goodwins theory to music videos

There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body:

In this video there are no females shown which represents that this part of Goodwin's theory has not been applied.

This might be due to the fact that this video is not representing females in such way rather in a more different way.

Instead there are only males visible in the song.

Page 25: Goodwins theory to music videos

This video is narrative based as he is singing about love, and uses words as “love” “you’ve been looking” “To love”.

Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based and how each concept is used:
