We’re back in Ordinary Time! I think that, when I’m being honest with myself, this is my favorite time of the year. Even though I’d like to say that Easter, or Christmas perhaps, is my favorite, this really is. The name doesn’t mean “plain” or “regular”; instead, Ordinary Time comes from ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.). We go through the Sundays and the weeks, one by one, following Jesus as presented by one of the evangelists. (Mark is the Gospel read during this year.) And today we are presented with parables about the kingdom. It reminds me that we plant seeds all the time, often without being conscious of it. Jesus’ words remind me of what Mary Ford Grabowsky wrote in The Way of Mary: “Recipients of our appreciation are apt to express their own gratitude to others, lengthening the unending, golden chain of connections-in-goodness that stretches across the world.” May you sow those seeds of appreciation and goodness, the seeds of God’s kingdom, in this world. As I write this I am overfed and relaxed, coming near the end of a wonderful vacation. I assure you that you have been in my thoughts and prayer often. I also look forward to being back “on duty” this Tuesday. I am ever grateful to Fr. Jack Gallagher for covering for me while I was away, and for Frs. Vince Dulock and Dominic Pistone, who are taking the Masses this weekend, and to Cheryl and all the staff for getting things done without me these past few weeks. See you soon!

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2012 GOSPEL REFLECTION,

Jesús no

-Deacon Rob

Today’s gospel reading talks about things growing. It talks about cultivating and watching things grow and mature. Jesus is talking about the Church and since we are the Church, He’s talking about us the people. “The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed.” From a small beginning, come gigantic results. This also tells us that we, the Church, should be about cultivating love. It is difficult for us to express love or even to own love. The whole idea of Christianity is simple love: real, honest, and personal. The whole message of the gospel is love. The Church is commanded to spread that love. Love is embodied in Scripture, enfleshed in Jesus, and lived in the saints. Woe to the church if she does not pass on that love. Above all else, it is the Church’s business to respond like God to the human need for love. Jesus did not come to frighten us out of our wits. Jesus did not come to give us detailed instruction for living. He did come to show us, that to live fully, we must be free to love one another. But love is risky. All of us are afraid of getting hurt and we need reassurance. This is the work of the Church, to show us that the risk is worthwhile, that love is possible, and that God’s love makes our human love holy. Sure, it is risky, but God took a chance and became human. On the day of judgment, all of us will have to answer for our many losses of love on the personal level. But we are also accountable as the Church, the people of God, the body of Christ, as the mustard seed that must grow. On that final day, when the Church tells God that it has kept the faith and guarded the doctrine, Jesus just might say, “That’s nice, but that’s not what I told you to do.” To prevent that scenario from happening, we better start cultivating those mustard seeds of love.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK June 17, 2012, Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time O God, strength of those who hope in you, graciously hear our pleas, and, since without you

mortal frailty can do nothing, grant us always the help of your grace, that in following your commands we may please you by our resolve and our deeds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
