* * * * * * * * Happy Feast Day, Parishioners!

Today, on the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, we celebrate the feast day of our parish. We can take great pleasure in looking around and seeing such an active, friendly Faith Community, founded in 1898, and as vigorous as ever in Worship, Education, Community Building and Outreach. Look around you and give thanks for all those Holy Trinity men, women and children parishioners who sacrificed so much that we might worship in elegance and cheerfully serve the less fortunate on the Upper West Side … and beyond.

Memorial Day Weekend As is our custom to allow members of the Pastoral Staff a chance to spend time with their families, the Rectory office will be closed, and the 5:30 Mass will NOT be celebrated the Monday of the Memorial Day weekend. Thanks for understanding.

Second Collection: June 3rd Along with the other 17,156 Catholic parishes in the United States, we will take up the annual second collection for American Missions for African American and Indigenous Peoples next weekend. Please consider making a donation to this worthy cause.

Memorial Day Weekend

We hope you are enjoying the beautiful holiday weekend. Please take the time to talk about honoring all those men and women who put on military uniforms for us, fought in horrible battles for us and died for us. You will have a more serious holiday for sure! May their souls rest in peace. Author John Daniel Davison puts it touchingly: For many Americans, Memorial Day has become a nonchalant occasion to take Monday off work and gather with family and friends at a park or a backyard cookout. But Memorial Day is of course about honoring our war dead. It was first instituted in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, when there were countless war dead to honor, Union and Confederate. Back then it was called “Decoration Day” as the point was to decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers. There’s a lot we can learn today from understanding those early days of mourning. After four years of a war that took the lives of some 620,000 Americans, Memorial Day was about remembering and honoring all who gave their lives, regardless of which uniform they wore. Recall, that was a time, much like our own, of deep divisions and rancor in America. Yet Americans then were able to honor the fallen of both side, recognizing that each died valiantly fighting for a cause in which they believed.

Welcome Fr. Mariano Perron On Wednesday, we will welcome our dear priest-friend from Madrid who has come to assist our parish Comunidad Latina while our own Spanish speaking priest is away on vacation. Father D’Angelo Jimenez, whom we have come to love and respect over his first year serving our Comunidad (from Blessed Sacrament Parish on West 71st Street), will be departing this week for his vacation month in beautiful Ecuador. We all wish him a restful time.

Our “Parish Year” Comes to an End The Parish Year extends from September to May

As is our recent custom, parish groups are starting to bring their activities to an end as June looms. Thanks to each and every parishioner who worked hard to strengthen our Community spirit, so important for a parish life! Remember, the People are the Church! What a parish! The summer months are vital for relaxing, vacationing and for reflection on what has been and what can be better for our parishioners. (August planning days will be here soon enough.)

“When Someone Asks You” Leaflet #4 Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope; but do it with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter 3:15 Copies of the fourth in a series of the one-page, easy-to-understand leaflets, penned by Mgr. Sandi, are available at the back of the church. WORDS Heard at the Liturgy lists a simple glossary of 90+ words and phrases we hear and say all the time at Mass but are not necessarily understood. You will be happy you picked one of the bright pink leaflets. FOR YOUR INTEREST & INFORMATION Father’s Day is June 17th. As is our custom, Father’s Day envelopes are available at the entrance of the church. You may write the names of all the fathers of your family, both living and deceased, on the back of the envelope and then drop it into any collection basket. They will be placed on the altar and where the Mass celebrants will be reminded of your fathers at each of their Masses in June. Looking for a unique summer activity? The Archdio-cese is offering two sacred music courses: Principles of Sacred Music and Introduction to Chant. For more information: www.nyliturgy.org/workshops or 914-968-6200 X 8177.
