Putting the CA²RE in Customer Service©

About the Program:

It is obvious that sales and customer facing departments benefit from customer service training because we all know that it takes 12 great customer service experiences to overcome 1 bad customer service experience. When external customers are happy, they buy again and again, thus improving the bottom line of the organization.

How often do we take this same training and provide it to the teams who serve our internal customers? HR professionals ben-efit greatly from customer service training. Why? Because internal customer satisfaction is equivalent to engagement. If a company creates high engagement (i.e. high internal customer satisfaction), they have low turnover, high productivity, and high creativity. If a company has low engagement, they experience high turnover, low morale and lackluster results. HR pro-fessionals focusing on serving the internal customers will increase their value to the organization and increase the bottom line. Additionally, HR professionals must strategically utilize their customer service skills to effectively communicate to the stake holders and C-suite to sell ideas to positively affect the organizations human capital and mission.

About the Speaker:

The practice of conflict transformation is a new and emerging concept in the public and corporate sector; however, it has been used by ombudsmen, mediators and alternative dispute resolution practitioners (ADR) for many years to bring peace to the world.

The values, tools and practices used in the ADR circle to create peace in the world have been adapted by Conflict Transformation Associates, LLC (CTA) for the busi-ness world. Organizations that embrace this philosophy foster a culture of collaboration in the midst of differing points of view. This culture nurtures an engaged, empowered and highly productive workforce that generates an improved bottom line.

Dawn Miller Sander completed a 20+ year sales management career with AT&T and moved to work in her area of passion, ad-dressing conflict within organizations using the conflict transformation philosophy and various tools, training and dialog. After receiving her Master’s Degree in Conflict Transformation at the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding-Eastern Mennonite Uni-versity, she is now leading the firm CTA using her facilitation, mediation, ombudsman, and training skills to bring transfor-mation to organizations.

New Minimum Wage Rate for Maryland and DC

As of January 1, 2015 twenty states have raised their minimum wage rate, Maryland being one of them. The

new minimum wage rate for Maryland has increased from $7.25 to $8.00 an hour. There are some excep-

tions though, which include tipped employees, some student workers and other exempt occupations.

This is the first time Maryland has raised the minimum wage above the Federal Minimum Wage rate. There

will be another minimum wage rate increase for Marylanders this year which is scheduled for July 1, 2015 where it will go

up from $8.00 an hour to $8.25 an hour. July 1, 2016 it will increase to 8.75, July 1, 2017 it will increase to $9.25 and July

1, 2018 it will increase to $10.10 an hour.

Washington D.C will increase their minimum wage rate to $10.50 on July 1, 2015 and to $11.50 on

July 1, 2017.

At this time there are no scheduled minimum wage rate increases for Virginia. The Virginia mini-

mum wage rate is currently $7.25 an hour.

Are You Ready for the New SHRM Certification? by: Dawn Atwood, PHR, PMP

Are you already a certified HR Professional?

If you are a current holder of an HR generalist certification (or will obtain a certification by January 31, 2015), you are eligible for SHRM's new certification—at no cost—by completing the following three simple steps between January 5 and Decem-ber 31, 2015:

1. Document that your current certification is in good stand-ing.

2. Sign the SHRM Code of Ethics.

3. Complete a brief online tutorial on HR competencies.

Once you complete this process, you will earn the new SHRM credential and begin a three-year SHRM recertification cycle.

You will not lose or have to give up any of your current cre-dentials in order to obtain the new SHRM Certification.

(PLEASE NOTE: At the time of this writing, I did not have any details or links to the tutorial that will be available beginning January 5th. Additional information will be provided once available. You can also check the SHRM Certification website here, for up-to-date information.)

Format of the Online Tutorial Pathway

The online tutorial focuses on the eight behavioral competen-cies found in the SHRM Competency Model and the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK). The tutori-al is made up of five modules, as well an interactive tool to create a Competency Self-Portrait, and samples of the scenar-io-based questions on the SHRM certification exams. (The sce-narios and question examples are not scored, and will only provide you exposure to how SHRM is assessing competencies in the exams.)

Determining Your Certification Level for the Online Tutorial Pathway

Your existing HR certification makes you eligible to earn the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification.

If you are a current holder of credentials such as PHR or HRBP you will be eligible for the SHRM-CP credential.

If you are a current holder of credentials such as SPHR, GPHR or HRMP, you will be eligible for the SHRM-SCP.

You will continue to keep your current credentials

You will not lose or have to give up any of your current cre-dentials in order to obtain the new SHRM Certification.

MCSHM will support HRCI and SHRM certifications and recer-tification credits

MCSHRM will continue to work with HRCI to have chapter

programs and events preapproved for recertification credits for your PHR, SPHR and GPHR certifications. MCSHRM is also a SHRM Preferred Provider and will award PDCs for chapter programs and events for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifi-cations as well.

Are you thinking of becoming a certified HR Professional?

There are a number or reasons to consider earning your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certifications. A certification will help demonstrate your mastery of the competencies and knowledge most important to organizations as defined by the SHRM Body of Competency & Knowledge, expand your scope within the HR field and bring new ideas to drive business suc-cess within your organization, make you stand out from other HR candidates in a job search, and demonstrate your long-term commitment to the HR profession.

Are you eligible to sit for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP Exam?

SHRM certification requires HR professionals sitting for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exams to have a combination of work experience and education.

In addition to education requirements (outlined here), you must show that you have worked in an HR role for more than 1,000 hours within a calendar year, you have HR experience in an exempt or non-exempt capacity, and that your HR experi-ence is classified directly, as working in an HR role, or indirect-ly, by consulting, educating, or educating or researching HR practices linked specifically to human resource management. SHRM membership is not required to earn the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credentials.

How to begin (more info here)

1. Determine your eligibility

2. Apply for the SSHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam (the first ex-ams will be offered in the spring testing window May 1 – July 15, 2015. Exam applications will be accepted January 5 – March 13)

3. Choose the 2015 SHRM Learning System option that suits your needs

4. Take the exam

For more information about the SHRM certifications please visit www.shrmcertification.org

Forbidden love. Horrible bosses. Liars. Gossips. Toxic personalities. Miserable employees.

Those were among 2014’s best-read SHRM Online employee relations stories. Here’s a look at some of the articles that most piqued readers’ interest:

When the Bad Guy’s the Boss

It can be untenable for any HR manager: The company’s owner says or does something for which you’d fire most employees, but not only do you lack the authority to show the owner the door, you’re not even sure how to approach him or her about the behavior.

Lawsuits and government sanctions going back eight years indicate that Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling engaged in housing and racial discrimination. Yet not until his racist remarks were caught on tape and splashed across TV screens worldwide did the National Basketball Association (NBA) on April 28, 2014, take decisive action—imposing on Sterling a lifetime ban from the NBA and a $2.5 million fine, and pledging to force Sterling to sell his team.
