Don’t Put the Swimsuit Away Yet!

The kids are back to school! Traffic is back to being a daily struggle! On the bright side, swim suit season is over! Or is it? This is the time of the year that I look at the calendar in awe of what’s to come….the holidays and numerous celebrations. It is also when all my hard work over the spring/summer towards better health goes out the window. What if this year is different and I instead decide that swim suit season isn’t over for both me & my team?

Yes, I too have read all the studies and articles showing the benefits of having an active wellness program for employees. I understand the ROI of such programs on productivity, reduced insurance benefit costs, and increase in employee engagement. However; so many of my employees struggle to maintain a whole year worth of focus on staying well. Life gets in the way…old habits come back…its tough!

At the SHRM National Conference in Las Vegas, Dr. Oz’s presentation on overall wellness made a strong case not for elaborate wellness initiatives, but five simple life adjustments to impact how long and well we live. Here they are:

1-Maintain healthy blood pressure

2-Exercise 30 minutes daily

3-Maintain a healthy diet that is easy to enjoy

4-Control stress & get 8 hours of sleep each night

5-Curtail addictions (food, alcohol, smoking, etc)

Dr. Oz said it’s easy, but it is us that make it complicated. So true!! How many wellness emails does your company send that go unread? How many health initiatives do you hold that stay the course? Helping ourselves and our team get healthy isn’t about the latest fad, but about making simple changes for long-term benefits. How Technology is Changing Recruiting and Job Search

We're excited to welcome guest speaker Bob Corlett founder and President of Staffing Advisors. He has been named as one

of the 100 most influential people in staffing, is a nationally syndicated weekly writer for the American Cities Business Jour-

nals and is a founding member of the Editorial Advisory Board for The HR Examiner.

About the Program:

Technology is rapidly reshaping candidate behavior and expectations, and those changes have rendered obsolete many re-

cruiting strategies. If you are still recruiting the way you did two, three, or even five years ago, you are not alone. Most em-

ployers have not yet adapted to the new recruiting landscape. But there are real advantages for those that do, and real con-

sequences for those who do not.

Learning Objectives:

This presentation will help you understand the new recruiting landscape and how to adapt to it.

Recognize the technological changes in the recruiting landscape, and how it impacts job advertising.

Understand the increased importance of Google Search and job posting aggregators – in particular Indeed.com.

Learn the impact of mobile devices on the recruiting process.

Learn the impact of social media “first impressions” and online employer reviews on the recruiting process.

Discuss the level of effort required, and the tradeoffs inherent in different recruiting strategies.

About the Speaker:

Bob is a nationally syndicated weekly writer for the American Cities Business Journals and is a founding

member of the Editorial Advisory Board for The HR Examiner. Bob is a frequent speaker at meetings of the

Society for Human Resources Management.

Date:

September 16, 2015, 7:00am - 9:00am

Location: Gaithersburg Hilton, 620 Perry Parkway, Gaithersburg, MD 20877

Price: $25.00 Members; $35.00 Nonmembers; $45.00 Walk-ins

This event has been Approved for 1 HRCI General Recertification Credits and eligible 1 SHRM PDCs

Montgomery County Earned Sick and Safe Leave Act goes into effect on October 1, 2016

In June of 2015, the Montgomery County Council passed legislation providing paid leave away from work that can be used for such things as preventative care or the care of the employee or a family member’s illness. This employer paid time off will be provided to any employee working in Montgomery County with the exception of: independent contractors, employees working less than 8 hours per week, and on-assignment employees. The legisla-tion requires covered employees to accrue sick and safe leave of up to 32 hours paid and 24 hours unpaid for employers with under 5 employees & up to 56 paid hours per year for employers with 5 or more employ-ees. All covered employees must earn at least 1 hour of paid sick and safe leave for every 30 hours worked in Montgomery County.

Employers must notify employees of their entitlement for leave and provide a written statement of how much sick and safe leave is available each time the employee is paid. Employers may award earned sick leave as the leave accrues or may award the full amount that an employee would earn at the beginning of the year.
