The Porsche 918 Spyder goes into production September 2013 and onsale in the U.S. near the end of the year. Porsche hasn't said but we'reguessing that means it will be a 2014 model. MSRP will be $845,000,Porsche said.
The world caught its first glimpse of thePorsche 918 Sypder plug-in hybrid conceptin March 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show.Five months later, Stuttgart announced thetwo-seater would go into production, afterbeing quietly shown (or not-so-quietly,depending on whom you ask) to a hand-picked group of prospective customers,including the swanky Pebble Beach crowdduring the week of the famed golf commu-nity's Concours d'Elegance.
With its futuristic, multi-faceted (some say overdone) styling, the 918may someday take its place as the first Porsche supercar since thelong-planned and short-lived Carrera GT, a $440,000 mid-enginewhich ended production in 2006.
The Porsche 918 Spyder is powered by a 500-horsepower, V8 gaso-line-powered engine and two electric motors (one each on the frontand rear axle) that generate a combined 160 kilowatts of power, rough-ly the equivalent of 218 hp, for a total of 718 hp. The powertrain ismated to Porsche's dual-clutch PDK transmission for lightening-quickshifts. Energy is stored in a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery, which can
be charged by plugging into a suitable elec-trical outlet.
Porsche, known for putting out conserva-tive specs on its cars, claims the 918 Spyderis capable of achieving fuel economy num-bers equivalent to 78 miles per gallon. Butwith a 0-to-100 km/h (about 62 mph) timeof less than 3.2 seconds and a top speed of198 mph, we're guessing most drivers won'tbe out hypermiling.
Performance of the 918 Spyder is largelydetermined by one of four driving modes:
E-Drive Mode: This all-electric mode is good for about 16 miles.

Hybrid Mode: Like other two-mode-hybrid systems,the 918 Spyder uses a combination of the electricmotors and combustion engine, depending on drivingdemands. Because driving styles and conditions areso variable, Porsche isn't giving any range or fueleconomy numbers right now.
Sport Hybrid Mode: Uses both drive systems, butwith heavier focus on performance. Power is biasedtoward the rear wheels and uses Torque Vectoring forenhanced driving dynamics. No numbers here, either.
Race Hybrid Mode: Full power, with push-to-pass E-Boost. Batteries must be fully charged to use thismode, and no doubt EPA ratings are abysmally low.But you'll look great passing the tool in the Ferrarinext to you on the freeway.
The 918 Spyder also converts kinetic energy frombraking into electrical energy that gets stored in thebattery to provide an on-demand power boost for fastacceleration. But this is not to be confused withKERS, which some might recognize as the promisingbut sometimes problematic technology found inrecent incarnations of Formula 1 cars, as well asPorsche's new experimental 918 RSR racecar.
All that extra technology means extra weight. So cut-ting bulk on the Porsche 918 Spyder was crucial.Porsche used a race-inspired monocoque body shellmade of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFP), aswell as magnesium and aluminum throughout theinner workings of the concept car to achieve a curbweight of 3,285 pounds. However, Porsche has yet totell us what type of roof will be used on the produc-tion car, which could tweak that number.

Overview
The Hyundai Genesis, now in its fourth year, is growing up. This afford-able, good-looking rear-wheel-drive sport coupe gets a refresh for 2013,including a redesigned front end, more powerful engines, a new 8-speedautomatic transmission and a longer list of standard features.
The most significant update is under the hood, where a choice of twoengines and a larger intercooler help to achieve even more power. The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that comes standard in the 2013 Hyundai GenesisCoupe gets a 30-percent horsepower jump to 274 hp. The V6, which isnow direct-injected for better efficiency, goes from 306 hp to 348 hp.
The 2013 Genesis Coupe is available with a new 8-speed automatic trans-mission with paddle shifters, which replaces the previous 6-speed automat-ic. A 6-speed manual gearbox carried over from the previous modelremains available.
A retuned suspension goes along with the 2013 Genesis Coupe, as well asimproved handling in the form of sharper steering.
While gains in power are impressive, improvement in fuel economy ismodest. Even with the new 8-speed automatic, fuel economy improves byonly one mile per gallon in most cases. The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe2.0 gets an EPA-rated 21/30 mpg with 6-speed manual, 20/31 mpg with 8-speed automatic. The V6-powered 2013 Genesis Coupe 3.8 is rated 18/27mpg with 6-speed
manual, 18/28 mpg with 8-speed automatic. All models require Premium gasoline.
Inthe cabin, the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets a redesigned center stackand gauges, including electroluminescent lighting. The steering col
umn now offers a telescoping adjustment, which is a welcome addition forthose drivers who are particular about exact steering wheel placement.Hyundai's BlueLink telematics system is now offered on upper trim levels,which offers voice text messaging, turn-by-turn navigation and monthlyvehicle reporting, and can be compared to General Motors' OnStar service.
Along with these upgrades in power and features is a jump in price.Buyers will have to shell out $2,000 more for most 2013 Genesis Coupemodels, and more for high-performance trims. But despite its higher price,this sport coupe still remains a great bang for the buck.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a stiff competitor to the American ponycars: the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger.Hyundai's rear-wheel-drive platform also makes it a toothier alternative tothe Mazda MX-5, a perennial spec-racing favorite. While the GenesisCoupe is still a top choice in this segment, more competition has comewith the introduction of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ.

Check out the blue book value of your vehicle. This can easily bedone online. Simply have the information about the make, model,and year of your vehicle and find an online blue book estimator. Behonest about the condition of your vehicle when you plug the statsinto the estimator to get the most accurate value of your vehicle.

Walkaround
The 2013 Porsche Boxster has undergone significant revi-sions, including the development of a new chassis that anchorsa vehicle with an added 2.4 inches of wheelbase, total lengthstretching a slightly more modest 1.3 inches. That translates toless overhang. The new roadster is also a wee bit lower. What'smore impressive is the fact that the base car sheds 55 pounds,the Boxster S dropping 77 pounds.
The Porsche Boxster's mid-engine layout is a critical definingfactor in design, but the design of the new 911, a rear-enginecar, has clearly influenced the new Boxster's overall styling.We think some folks may mistake the new Boxster for a pre-vious-generation 911 cabrio.
The windshield has moved forward by about four inches,while the new Boxster's tall front fenders and sloping head-lamps bear a clear hint of 911 to them. The sculpted side pan-els, which flow into deep air scoops just behind the doors, bearthe imprint of the Carrera GT. The 2013 Boxster features flow-ing LED taillamps that pinch in under the decklid just beneaththe new integrated rear spoiler.
The overall look is devoid of excess ornamentation and pres-ents a more mature look for the 2013 Boxster.
The Boxster is a roadster and it takes a brief 9 seconds to raiseor lower the top, to our knowledge the fastest of any ragtop onthe market.
Interior Features
The 2013 Boxster is roomier than the previous version. Forthose who have found the cabin a bit cramped in past genera-tions of Boxsters the new model will come as a markedimprovement.
The added wheelbase has largely benefited the interior, start-ing with seats that can travel an extra inch rearward. Thoseseats, meanwhile, offer substantial lateral support, as we dis-covered during both some aggressive track driving and aslightly more leisurely route through the Alabama countryside.But they're also pleasantly comfortable after even severalhours behind the wheel.
And looking through the steering wheel you'll discover anattractive new three-gauge cluster reminiscent of both the new911 and the Porsche Panamera. It was the Panamera that intro-duced the distinctive center console where the majority of thecar's switches and controls are located. That new design layoutcarries over into the Boxster.
The overall look and feel, meanwhile, is decidedly morerefined than the Boxsters of past. As with all recent Porscheofferings the maker has been recognizing that it is, after all, asmuch a luxury car maker as a manufacturer of high-perform-ance automobiles. There's no reason to settle for chintzyswitches, handles and knobs and the 2013 Boxster is proof inpoint.

The 2.0T comes with a 6-speed manual transmis-sion or an optional 8-speed automatic with paddleshifters. The 2.0T R-Spec comes only with themanual, and the 2.0T Premium only with theautomatic. Similarly, the 3.8 R-Spec is strictlymanual, while the 3.8 Grand Touring comes withthe 8-speed automatic. The 3.8 Track comes stan-dard with the manual and offers the 6-speed auto-matic as an option.
The 2.0T comes with fabric upholstery; powerwindows, outside mirrors and central locking;leather-wrapped shift knob and manual tilt steer-ing wheel; and a six-speaker multi-media stereo.XM Satellite Radio and Bluetooth capability arealso standard across the line. Premium addspower driver seat, automatic climate control,auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with com-pass and programmable garage/gate remote, a360-watt multi-media stereo with 10 speakersincluding woofer, touch-screen navigation, powertilt-and-slide moon/sunroof, and proximity keywith push-button start/stop.
The 2.0 Premium includes 18-inch alloy wheels,power sunroof, proximity key with push buttonstart/stop; power, fabric upholstery with leathertrim; power driver's seat; air conditioning, fullpower accessories; cruise control; leather-wrapped shift knob and manual-tilt steering
wheel with audio controls; 360-watt, 10-speakerInfinity audio system with AM/FM, HD radio,satellite radio and CD player, iPod/USB/auxiliaryjacks, satellite radio capability and Bluetoothconnectivity; 7-inch touchscreen with navigation.
The 2.0T R-Spec is a performance model thatdeletes some trim from the base 2.0T, as well asthe base model's automatic headlights and cruisecontrol. In exchange, the R-Spec adds 19-inchwheels with 40-series summer tires (instead of
all-season tires), a Brembo braking system, track-tuned suspension, limited slip differential, blackleather seats with red cloth inserts, and matchingcloth and leather inside door trim.
The 3.8 lineup begins with R-Spec trim, plus foglights. The top-of-the-line Track adds the sunroof;cruise control; automatic climate control; the 360-watt stereo; folding and heated features to theoutside mirrors, which include integrated turn sig-nals; automatic xenon HID headlights; aerody-
namic front wipers; a body-color rear spoiler; alu-minum pedals and other metallic trim. Heatedfront seats are upholstered in black leather withpower adjustment for the driver.
The 3.8 Grand Touring shares most of the Track'sluxury features, but deletes some of its perform-ance equipment (including the Brembo brakesand stiffer suspension) while dialing back to 18-inch wheels and tires. It also sports a backupwarning system, brown leather seats and otherunique trim inside and out.
Safety equipment includes frontal, side-impactand side-curtain airbags. The front seats haveactive, anti-whiplash head restraints. All four pas-sengers get three-point seatbelts with pre-tension-ers and force limiters. The rear seat comes outfit-ted with child safety seat anchors. Active safetyfeatures include antilock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, electronic stabilitycontrol with traction control and tire pressuremonitors. A backup warning system comes on theGrand Touring model.

air inlets and a larger, big-mouth grin. The designgets mixed reviews from experts and enthusiasts,as some prefer the sleeker lines of the first gener-ation. New fog lights and LED daytime runninglamps also debut on the revised front fascia.
In back, there are new LED tail lights andchromed dual exhaust tips, as well as a blacked-out rear diffuser panel. From the side, theGenesis Coupe keeps its signature Z-shape char-acter lines.
There are several new race-inspired exterior col-ors, named after famous racetracks and turns,including Becketts Black, Catalunya Copper,Circuit Silver, Gran Premio Gray, Monaco White,Parabolica Blue, and Shoreline Drive Blue.Wheel styles are also new.
Interior Features
Interior materials have been upgraded on the2013 Genesis Coupe with a variety of soft-touch
materials. New color combinations are availablefor 2013, including tan leather, red cloth andleather combos, and gray cloth and leather pair-ings. Cars equipped with leather upholstery alsoget a leather-wrapped parking brake lever.
However, some interior materials weren't up toour expectations, such as the plastic bezels andlenses on the three gauges near the bottom of thecenter stack. Though they were designed to looksporty, they end up looking more like an 80sSwatch. And though Hyundai touts the genuinestitching on the dash, it's plastic-y looking andflat. We had to ask a rep to slide a needle underthe stitches to prove it wasn't pressed on. Wefound some fit and finish issues with interiorpanels near the driver and passenger knee areas,too, although Hyundai reps tell us the preproduc-tion cars we were driving won't necessarily beidentical to the versions that will go on sale.
The front seats are comfortable but sufficientlyassertive to hold the backside in place duringspirited driving, especially in the 2.0T with itsbasic black cloth. The 3.8's leather is a nice touchof semi-luxury. The back seats are only for smallchildren and, in some states, lower insurance pre-miums.
The steering wheel feels good, with just the rightrim thickness and cross section. On automatics,the column-mounted shift paddles are easy toreach. But on manuals, the rectangular shiftermight feel awkward to those used to a round shiftknob that fits nicely in hand. The foot pedals arewhere the driver's feet expect, although place-ment isn't ideal for those who like to heel-toe.
The center stack layout, while we aren't a fan ofthe three plastic gauges near the bottom, are easyto use and intuitive. The 7-inch touch screen thatcomes with the 2.0 Premium trim is sufficient butnot spectacular.
Front-seat roominess is very good by coupe stan-
dards. Front-seat headroom in the Genesis Coupetops that in the Mazda RX-8 and BMW 3 Seriescoupe (both outgoing models) by about one inch,while legroom bests those two by at least an andinch and a half. Hip room in the Genesis Coupe'sfront seats is wider by almost three inches than inthe RX-8's seats.
If rear seats must be added to the chart, theCoupe does not fare well, trailing in head roomby two inches, in leg room by two to three inchesor more, but eking out a win by one inch over theRX-8 in hip room. But what do you care? Youwon't be sitting back there. Drivers who wantrear-seat room may want to opt for the Genesissedan.
With 10 cubic feet of cargo space, the GenesisCoupe holds more than the Mazda RX-8 (7.6 cu.ft.), a little less than the BMW 3 Series coupe
Driving Impressions
With the increase in power, the 2013 GenesisCoupe's 2.0T engine accelerates with ample apti-tude. In the previous model, driving at higherspeeds made for some unpleasantly rough feed-back through the steering wheel. But thanks tothe revised suspension, the 2013 Genesis Coupefeels more in control.
On the track, both the 2.0 and the V6 versionswere a delight and felt nicely balanced. On 3.8models, the Genesis Coupe channels enginenoise into the cabin, which gives the driver andpassengers increased aural satisfaction at higherrevs.
With the previous engine, we found power lack-ing in situations like passing on a mountain road.But with the new hearty bump in horsepower, the2013 Genesis Coupe had enough oomph tomaneuver with relative ease. As with the previousincarnation, power delivery in the 2.0T was lin-ear with virtually no evidence of turbo lag. Shiftsin the automatics were smooth and precise. Inmanual mode, upshifts are controlled solely by
the driver, which makes for a closer car-to-driverinteraction.
The ride was comfortable on well-maintainedinterstates, showing some rough edges only onweathered urban roads, where broad expansionjoints and broken pavement sent jolts through thesuspension hard points. Road and tire noise wasmostly muted, as was wind noise, even atInterstate speeds.(1
Summary
The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe offers upgrad-ed features and track-worthy performance at anattainable price. Despite its higher price tag, theGenesis Coupe still offers competitive power andfuel economy with both the four-cylinder and V6engines. Coupled with Hyundai's unmatchedfive-year warranty, the 2013 Genesis Coupe istough to beat.
