BOBBY JINDAL, NOT JOHN BOEHNER

SHOULD BE LEADER OF GOP

Chris Chaney

Since the government shutdown nearly every pundit has come to the same conclusion: the GOP brand is damaged beyond repair. It doesn't get much worse than being likened to hostage takers and terrorists. CNN’s Candy Crowley even asked Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) if he would consider being anything other than a Republican (Paul laughed off the idea). But are they right? Is the GOP doomed? The answer depends on who leads the GOP; for the sake of the party, it’s time for Bobby Jindal to take charge.

The highest ranking Republican official, Speaker Boehner is the de facto leader of the Republican Party. Chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association, Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana serves as the highest ranking state Republican official. The two men stand in stark contrast.

Boehner represents the out-of-touch, dysfunctional, gridlocked Congress, who manages to scream, yell, and do the Sunday talk shows. Jindal represents thirty Republican governors who have cut taxes, balanced budgets, slashed spending, reformed public employee pensions, reformed public education, and created jobs. All things Washington promises to do, but hardly ever does.

Thirty governor’s mansions are inhabited by Republican chief executives, and Republicans have total control of twenty-eight state legislatures. There are five female

governors, four are Republicans. The three youngest governors are all Republicans. The first Indian-American governor is a Republican. The first female Hispanic governor is a Republican. Simply put, the GOP is winning in the states. Why? Because Republican governors demonstrate strong leadership, connect with voters and deliver results.

According to Forbes, seven out of the ten best states for business are run by Republican governors, while GOP executives lead eight out of the ten best states for future job growth. The Tax Foundation calculated that seven out of the ten best business tax climates are found in states with Republican governors; however, seven out of the ten worst business tax climates are found in states controlled by Democratic governors. Shocker.

Contrary to basic liberal doctrine, low taxes and fair regulations attract new businesses, encourage investment, and spur job growth. More jobs, means a broader tax base, less welfare recipients, and a higher standard of living. Jobs are the answer to America’s ills, not another government agency. Republican controlled states lead the way in job growth, not Washington, DC.

However, GOP governors have found success elsewhere, too. Gov. Jindal enacted a school choice program, so that high achieving students from low-income families will not be trapped in failing schools. Oklahoma’s Gov. Mary Fallin enacted historic income tax reform, and privatized worker’s compensation programs. New Mexico’s Gov. Susana Martinez—with a Democratic controlled legislature—successfully championed corporate tax reform.

Wisconsin’s Gov. Scott Walker reformed public employee pensions.

How will Democratic states counter this narrative? Somehow “Jindal leads hostage-taking GOP governors to economic success,” just doesn’t have a good feel to it. But I’m sure liberals will try to make it work.

Conservatism rests at the core of the GOP, and at the core of conservatism stands a simple truth: the federal government is incapable of doing anything (except for national defense) as well as state governments. The conflict between liberalism and conservatism is a conflict over which level of government should have more power: state or federal. Over and over again, Big Government has failed the American people. The Democrats are the party of Big Government and Washington. It is time for the Republicans to be the party of the states.

Not only should the GOP’s brand be based on success in the states, but the GOP should actively recruit candidates for Congress who have experience in state and local government, not just Washington insider status. The practice of promoting House members to the Senate needs to stop. For example, Mia Love (R-Ut.) and Karen Handel (R-Ga.) would both bring years of experience in state and local government to an out-of-touch Washington.

It’s clear that Washington’s dysfunction has badly damaged the GOP brand, but hope lies on the horizon. Bobby Jindal should be the leader of the GOP, not John Boehner. He and his twenty-nine fellow Republican governors can proudly say: we cut taxes, balanced budgets, and grew our economies. What can Washington say?

SHOULD BE LEADER OF GOP CON’T

Washington is the party of Old Republicans. The states are the party of Grand Republicans. To win in the future, the GOP must stop being old, and start being grand.

CAN WE TRUST OUR GOVERNMENT

ANYMORE?Andrew Desiderio

Nowadays, saying the Obama administration has a credibility problem is like saying Bucks County is full of deer — it’s a given.

It’s not good news for the president when even The New York Times says in an editorial: “The administration has lost all credibility.”

And, believe it or not, most of the time, it isn’t President Barack Obama himself who has lied (although he does his fair share of that). Lately, it’s been high-ranking officials in his administration.

To prove my point, let’s start with the most-recent revelation that the National Security Agency (NSA) gathers phone call data from Verizon customers, including information on who was called and the duration of the call.

In addition, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported that “under the post-9/11 Patriot Act, the government has

been collecting records on every telephone call made in America.”

Ignoring the fact the Patriot Act is one of the most vile and despicable pieces of legislation in American history, and the fact Obama vehemently campaigned against these sorts of tactics (Obama in 2006 on the Senate floor: “We need to find a way forward to make sure that we can stop terrorists, while protecting privacy and liberty of innocent Americans.”) … here comes the breach of trust.

In a Senate hearing on March 12, Sen. Ron Wyden asked James R. Clapper, director of national intelligence: “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?”

Clapper’s response?

“No, sir.”

We now know that to be 100 percent factually inaccurate. Clapper lied under oath.

IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman testified in a House hearing last year, in which he was asked, “Can you give us assurances that the IRS is not targeting particular groups based on political leanings?”

Shulman’s response was, “Yes, I can give you assurances. As you know, we pride ourselves on being a non-political, non-partisan organization.”

Again, a bold-faced lie. Under oath, as well.

Attorney General Eric Holder said at a House hearing in May: “With regard to the potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material, that is not something that I’ve ever been involved in, heard of,

or would think would be a wise policy.”

He, of course, said this before it was revealed he signed off on the affidavits to subpoena the phone records and track the whereabouts of dozens of Associated Press reporters, as well as FNC’s James Rosen.

On May 10, White House press secretary Jay Carney claimed the only change made to the Benghazi talking points was replacing the word “consulate” with “diplomatic facility,” which were “non-substantive” changes.

We now know that this, too, is factually inaccurate, due to the reporting of ABC’s Jonathan Karl and the Weekly Standard’s Stephen Hayes, which proves the Benghazi talking points were altered 12 times and all references to terrorism were removed.

Keep in mind, we still don’t know who edited the talking points or who gave the order for our troops in the region to stand down, and sadly no suspects have been brought into custody for the attack — which occurred nine months ago — despite Obama’s promise that those who carried out the attack would be brought to justice.

Also, no IRS officials have been reprimanded thus far. In fact, Lois Lerner has been placed on paid administrative leave, essentially a paid vacation.

Obama should be taking actions to punish those in his administration who lied to us.

But instead, he’s rewarding these liars. Last week, for example, he promoted Ambassador Susan Rice to National Security Adviser — the same Susan Rice who (whether

ANYMORE? CON’T

willingly or not) misled the American people on five Sunday shows after the Benghazi attack and never apologized for her errors.

When our government deliberately misleads us, we should all be offended. But when those who mislead us are not brought to justice, we have a big problem. Especially when many of those officials lied under oath.

We all deserve the truth from our government — and when it is not given to us, we should demand it.

The latest despicable actions of high-ranking Obama administration officials should prove to us we should always be skeptical of our government, even of prominent officials who carry a significant responsibly to be truthful with the people they serve.

JOIN THE NETWORK OF ENLIGHTENED

WOMEN (NeW)

Sarah Swabeck

NeW was founded at the University of Virginia. Karin Agness, the founder, created this book club over ten years ago when she couldn’t find a non progressive women’s group on campus. She then formed NeW, a conservative book club for college students. The Network of enlightened Women is dedicated to fostering the education and leadership of culturally conservative university women. NeW is devoted

to promoting conservative principles and intellectual diversity. The Network of Enlightened Women is “new” to GWU this year! Meetings are every other Sunday. Please contact me, Sarah Swanbeck, at [email protected] if you are interested in joining. Currently, we are reading “Freedom Feminism” by Christina Hoff Sommers.

The Return to Compassionate ConservatismSean Kumnick

It is a common held opinion that Ronald Reagan is the golden standard for the modern Republican Party. He’s the man that is given title of “defeating” the Soviet Union, the man who lead the nation out of the Energy Crisis and much more: Reagan was a compassionate conservative and everyone knew it.Since then, we’ve been framed as the party that is anti-abortion, anti- gay marriage, anti-this and anti-that. Republicans aren’t stingy villains or self-righteous penny pinchers. We drop fat checks on Sundays more than we drop bombs. We serve more meals than we serve prison terms for embezzlement.

Throughout the course of American History there have been instances in which polarized factions divide the nation with their dynamic diatribes, charismatic conflagrations, and more. The people we need to lead the New Republican Party in this country aren’t the Ted Cruz’s of the world. Ted Cruz proved that he could stand and talk for an extended period of time, but what he still hasn’t proved is how he can solve the partisan divide in this country. And he surely hasn’t helped to decrease the gap between the parties.

While Democrats are out there forcing a sequester and still coming up with various ways to cheat the system; Republicans are only out there fueling the fire. While we may lay claim to protecting the American Dream as a party, we aren’t really offering Americans with an opportunity to put more money in their pockets besides cutting taxes and cutting spending, which is exactly what the democrats want us to say. In reality, the necessity of our time is that we must raise taxes and cut spending at the same time unless we want to end up in the same place as Great Britain: 45 trillion in debt and austerity measures to save their national economic stability.

In short, we need to be the party that focuses on both governmental fiscal responsibility and also the party that focuses on giving as many hands up as possible. We need to be a party that is pro-job, pro-education, pro-family, pro-charity etc. If we can learn to put forward these strengths to the American Public and to the Media we will be regarded as a party that is for the common American. We need to stop focusing on how we can just take care of Republicans and start focusing on how we can take care of all Americans. Once the party returns to ideals of compassionate conservatism that help lower and middle class Americans work their way up the ladder is when we will start winning national elections.

Cues can be taken from Republicans on the local and state levels in order to solve this problem. We can look at individuals such as Bobby Jindal, Susanna Martinez, John Huntsman and Chris Christie as people who will lead the party toward this vision of compassionate conservatism. Once we return to the real values that Ronald Reagan espoused we will begin to win again on a national level: It’s Morning in America.
