The introduction of over a dozen ducks in the pond in Mangal Eri Park at Mogappair in recent weeks has come as an added attraction to visitors of the park. In fact it has been drawing more crowds to the park with some people coming there specifically to watch the ducks swim across the pond.

Presently in very few public places in Chennai ducks are seen. Some of the other places where people get to see ducks are the Chetpet Eco Park and the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore.

“Since the Mogappair neighbourhood has very few places of entertainment, the introduction of ducks in the pond is in-deed a welcome feature. Many children who visit the parks in the neighbourhood often get bored after some time. Now we can take them to Mangal Eri Park where they can watch the ducks for hours to-gether till their eyes are tired,” says Uma Maheshwari, a housewife and resident of 10th Block in Mogappair East.

“I love to come to this park in the evenings on a daily basis to see the white, brown and black ducks. I love to see them coming near the bund to eat the food that

has been kept for them by the caretakers in a bowl. It is so nice to watch them swim in groups of three or four at differ-ent places in the pond,” said Lalitha Kumari, a class VI student of a private school, who had come to the Mangal Eri Park with her mother Kamini Naray-anan.

With summer vacation for school children around the corner, many par-ents feel that a visit to the Mangal Eri Park will be part of their itinerary now at least to watch the ducks.

“Until recently, we used to take our children to the Chetpet Eco Park during weekends and watching the ducks was their favourite pastime there. But it in-volved travel by auto rickshaw or taxis as there is no direct bus from Mogappair to Chetpet Eco Park. We spent quite some money on this. Now we can just head to the Mangal Eri Park and I am sure the children will be happy,” said Lakshmi, a middle aged mother who has two children one aged 10 and the other 6 years old. Also another advantage is that no entry fee is charged at the Mangal Eri Park whereas to enter the Chetpet Eco Park a fee of Rs 25 is collected per visitor.

esidents living in the neigh-bourhood of Mogappair East and West are being put to extreme hardship by

various civic agencies which are undertaking works in the public arena as they do not intimate the people in advance about such op-erations.

In the last one year, multiple civic agencies have undertaken ex-haustive works in different parts of the Mogappair neighbourhood that involves digging up of roads, not just on either sides of the common pathways but also right in the middle of the road as well. How-ever, a major complaint of a cross section of residents has been that

there is hardly any intimation about these works thereby causing them serious inconvenience.

When a road is dug up, usually road users must be alerted by sign-boards placed at the beginning of the roads so that vehicles can use alternative routes right at the entry point. In the absence of this, people often enter the roads where the work is in progress and are forced to find alternative routes mid-way through their trip leading to wastage of precious time and chaotic scene on the roads.

A case in point is the digging up of a road near the entrance of the Sri Ram Street in Panneer Nagar in Mogappair. “After the road was dug up and re-laid the contractor engaged by the civic agency to undertake the work had placed iron barricades across the road at Panneer Nagar. But people enter-ing the road from the Mangal Eri Park end and its various intersec-tions as well as those coming from the Mogappair Village Road near Varun Apartments were unaware of the ongoing work. As a result of this, many motorists who came till the point where the barricades were placed, had to take a ‘U’ Turn and return in the same direction from where they came to find al-ternative routes,” complained Gowrishankar, a resident of Mogappair.

It was quite a struggle for two-wheeler riders who managed to squeeze through ahead from one side of the barricade. “I saw one case where a woman with her tod-dler child standing in front on the scooter struggling to go past by the side of the barricade. She was al-most about to skid and passersby rushed to her aid. Such a situation would not have arisen if the con-tractor had placed sign boards about the work in progress at the beginning of the road so that motor-ists could have avoided this stretch,” said Ramanathan, who lives in Panneer Nagar.

The fascination of going to school on motorcycles by high school students is gaining importance and simultaneously causing several traffic problems in the city, particularly in Mogappair, that houses schools aplenty. Parents think it is a pride providing a two-wheeler to their young ones. But it is prov-ing costly with increase in number of accidents in various parts of the city in the recent past.

The cops have warned that they will strictly observe the letter of the law by jailing and fining negligent parents.So far traffic cops have not been taking up this matter seriously on kids. They usually seize the vehicle and let them off with a warning unless they have been involved in an accident.Parents were allowed to collect the vehicle after receiving a warning. But now they face imprison-ment for up to three months, or a fine extend-ing to Rs 1,000, or both, under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. If the vehicle belongs to someone else, they will face similar action.Minor drivers are a threat to themselves as well as other motorists who ad-here to traffic rules. Par-ents should at least now realise the danger in let-ting their underage chil-dren drive vehicles.

However majority of school children from schools in Mogappair have been using motorcycles as a mode of transport from their homes to schools, vio-lating all RTA and traffic rules. Students riding mo-torbikes to attend tuition classes is also on the rise.

The school students vio-late the traffic norms and ride the vehicles at high speed, which results in several accidents.

There have been in-stances of students going on a triple-ride with their friends at high speed and caused commotion to pe-destrians and other road-users. Students coming on motorcycles was also creat-

ing differences among their student community and creating a complex be-tween the rich and poor.

The various school managements should em-power their parents and students about the ill-ef-fects of driving motorcy-cles at a tender age. Ex-pressing concern over the menace of school children

driving motorcycles, an elderly parent said that schools should not allow students who come on motorcycles. The need of the hour is to launch a mas-sive campaign in the city against riding of motorcy-cles by high school stu-dents, he added.

A retired Police Traffic Inspector said, “We can only impose fines on stu-dents riding vehicles with-out licences. It is for the

parents and educa-tional institutions to discourage the use of two-wheel-

ers by the student community.”He said that there

have been several instances of students sustaining injuries following accidents due to rash driving of vehicles in the city.

When people stay away from their native towns there is a natural craving for bonding with other similar people. This holds good even when people move out of their natives and stay in another city or town for generations. A case in point is the Telugu linguistic-origin people living in Chennai and our own neigh-bourhood, who constitute a significant popula-tion of the linguistic minorities in the vibrant metropolis.

in our neighbourhood, a taxi driver Dham-odharan, whose forefathers had migrated from Andhra Pradesh and made Chennai their home, had launched an association to bring together the Telugus living in and around the Padi Pudunagar area near Mogappair east. The association named ‘Padi Pudunagar Naidu Peravai’, according to him, seeks to be a forum for linking the Telugu speaking people by organising various cul-tural events and programmes involving com-munity participation.

“The Telugu speaking people here should

not forget their mother tongue. We have very limited schools which teach Telugu and they too hardly have any takers. it is indeed sad that people of my generation, who have their origins in Andhra Pradesh, do not know how to write in Telugu. So i have made sure that my children somehow learn at least to sign in Telugu,” said Dhamodharan.

The association, he claimed, undertakes activities like setting up free buttermilk stall during summer just to ensure participation of the locals. “We settled here more than three generations ago. even at home we don’t speak

in Telugu and writing has become even more difficult. We can’t allow this to continue as it would alienate us from our roots. So we formed this association which now has around 400 Telugu speaking people as members with one of its aims being to promote the Telugu lan-guage,” he said.

According to him, the association has been celebrating the Telugu New Year too for the past four years. This year on March 18 during Ugadi (Telugu New Year) day, the association organised a free health camp on the Padi Kuppam Road. They also served free food to around 300 people. As part of the health camp, an eye screening initiative was conducted through the Aravindhan eye Hospital. “At this camp, 107 people got their eyes examined, five doctors came and more than 80 people also donated blood,” he said.

The Mogappair Telugu Cultural and Social Association with Dr Giri Hanumantha Rao at the helm of affairs and functioning from Golden Colony will have their annual Ugadi celebrations on May 13 at the Chinnaswamy Kalyana Mandapam, Mogappair.

The news that abandoned vehicles on the streets and footpaths will be towed away and then auctioned if left unclaimed was flashed in the newspapers a week ago. This was due to the pressure from the residents welfare associations in many places. 15 days time will be given to the owners to do the needful. Here are a few pictures of

Week after week there is one player or the

other making the Velam-mal Group of institutions proud. Following the foot-steps of S Praggnanandhaa who made a mark in Ire-land last week, this time it is D Gukesh. the sixth

standard student of Velam-mal Mel Ayanambakkam, who became the world's 2nd youngest International Master (IM). He grabbed his third norm in the Ca-pelle la grande open Chess tournament held in France in the first week of March. He is currently ranked first in the under 11 category with a rating of 2401

points. Gukesh bagged his second IM norm at the Moscow open early this year. He posted crucial victories over two sturdy contenders - IM Ilja Il-jushenok (2512) and GM Dmitry Frolyanov (2567).

He clinched his maiden IM norm after a stupen-dous show at the 'First Friday' tournament which

took place at the Institute of Chess Excellence in Malaysia in October 2017.

Gukesh caught the eye of one and all in the year 2015 when he reigned su-preme in the U-9 category of the Asian School chess championships. That show got him the Candidate Master title.

Taking into account his diminutive figure one is likely to miss out his pres-ence in a tournament but over the board he is a force to reckon with. He is soft spoken but plays with ma-turity that surprise all. He has won many tourna-ments across the globe.

An important thing to be considered is the role played by his institution - the Velammal CBSE School - in his overall de-velopment. this institute has produced many stars particularly in chess and it

is no surprises that young stars such as IM R Prag-gnanandhaa, GM Ara-vindh Chithambaram and GM Murali Karthikeyan have been part of the school. A start has been made. Gukesh is quite young and it is only a mat-ter of time, the world gets to hear more about this unassuming lad.
