A section of residents of the East Main Road in Anna Nagar Western Extension in Thiruman-galam is waging a losing battle against dumping of garbage at one spot in the locality. The East Main Road connects the School Road (near Thirumangalam Po-lice Station) with the Thiruman-galam-Mogappair Road at the point near the Housing Board shopping complex. Several apart-ments, bungalows, commercial establishments, small eateries and a private school dot either sides of this road.

Closer to the Asiad Colony [East Main Road entrance] gar-bage is liberally strewn near the junction boxes of various service providers including that of the Tamil Nadu Generation and

D i s t r i b u t i o n C o m p a n y (TANGEDCO, which was for-merly called the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board). Ironically no amount of effort taken by some locals to keep the garbage dump-ers away has worked yet.

Dozens of polythene bags loaded with kitchen and house-hold waste and assortment of waste items can be seen dumped near the junction boxes despite three handwritten notices being pasted on them which read ‘Ingu Kuppai Kottadheer’ (Don’t dump garbage here).

“We don’t know who started this disgusting habit of dumping waste items at this spot. But for the past many months we are battling against this but to no avail. Some public spirited indi-vidual put up these notices hop-ing it will keep litterers away but

it appears those who dump garbage here are illiterate or simply don’t care about civic sense,” lamented Anitha, a housewife and resident of a house nearby. “Imagine the struggle the person who put up these notices must have undergone. He/she must have surely stepped on this garbage pile and taken effort to stick those notices. But who cares,” she added throwing up her hand in the air as a sign of desperation.

“Usually people have the habit of throwing garbage in vacant plots. But it is irritating to see them do the same right here on the road,” said Ramak-rishnan, an elderly citizen who is a resident of an apartment in the locality.

Chennai Corporation authorities must at least place garbage bins in the area to prevent people from dumping garbage on the road. Else this menace which leads to mosquito breeding and conse-quent spread of diseases cannot be controlled.

R Praggnanandhaa of Velammal Ma-triculation Higher Secondary School made his school and country proud as he became India’s youngest Grandmaster at the age of 12 years, 10 months and 13 days. He had not only finished joint first at the Gredine Open, where he was fielded sixth but he also made his final grandmaster norm with a round to spare to become India’s 52nd Grandmaster. Ukraine’s Serget Karjakin remains the young-est ever Grandmaster.

Back in the May of 2016, Praggnanand-haa had become the youngest International Master in the history of the game at the age of 10 years and 9 months. And ever since, the little boy had piqued the interest of the world as he stood a chance to become the world’s youngest grandmaster.

Chasing his dream, Praggnanandhaa trav-eled the world and played several tourna-ments trying to earn GM norms. He even reached the 2500 rating threshold in this time but always fell short when it came to norms. At the conclusion of the Aeroflot Open this year, it was clear that he will not be able to meet the requirements for the GM title before 10 March, the deadline for breaking Sergey Karjakin’s record. Pragga’s sister Vaishali of the same school is a l s o r e n ow n e d chess player. He is coached by RB Ra-mesh of Guru-kal Chess Academy.

Volunteers wanted for eye bank

As part of the blind free India project, the Rajan Care Hospital who are associated with the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank will train volunteers and help with not just the training but will, in the event a cornea is available rush to the spot to collect the tissues scientifically. The training is scheduled on July 15 at 10 a.m at Rajan Eye Hospital, T Nagar. 20 volun-teers were planned for the first batch of trainees and only 12 volunteers have enrolled so far. This batch requires 8 more.

The sprawl ing Dr Ambedkar grounds at the Mogappair Eri Scheme wore a festive look on Fri-day as cricket crazy players and fans from all corners of the city and some from another state thronged the venue. Though the tennis ball flood lit cricket tourna-ment was held for the 17th year it was something spe-cial this time. The golden Jingle Memorial Rolling Trophies introduced for the first time and the attractive prize money offered to the players had caught the at-tention of one and all.

Hanging serial lights right through the road lead-ing to the ground, huge hoardings at street corners, balloon arches, a drone going around capturing every moment of the ac-tion and the colourful fire-works that brightened the

Crematorium Craving for attention

he Corporation Crematorium situated in Officers’ Colony Annanagar Western Extn. Ward 89 Zone 7 surrounded by posh residential houses, a park and adult

playground is very poorly maintained without any maintenance.

The cremation which was taking place on the road was shifted to the present place in the year 2000-01 with public contribution collected by Annanagar Western Extn. (Phase II) residents welfare association of Rs 1.75 lakhs and with participation by erstwhile Ambathur Municipal-ity’s contribution of Rs. 5.25 lakhs. (Total seven lakhs).

Under the sustainable Chennai project of the CMDA. The cremation shed with Chimney in steel was installed. The compound wall which collapsed within three years of construction was rebuilt when the adjacent Adult Playground was developed. Since installation no improvements or maintenance have taken place. There is no pathway to reach the cremation shed as the gates are always open. All sorts of building debris and other materials are being dumped inside the ground and the place is also used for open defacation.

The top portion of the shed has fully rusted with lots of holes and when the body is burnt smoke leaks from all the sides. Since the shed is lower than the ground level water stagnates in-side the cremation shed and the bodies are burnt in the open sheds nearby with pungent stench emanating. There is also no water facility in the cremation ground.

It’s high time the Chennai Corporation im-proves the facility by erecting a new high Chim-ney and raise the height of the shed from the ground level. The bushes all around are also to be cleared as the place is used for all sorts of il-legal activities. The residents do not want an Electric or a Gasifier crematorium. It is enough that the present facility is improved for better usage. The place of rest should be neat and clean is what the public expects.

Over two dozen motor-cycles, some cars and around 10 auto rickshaws that were seized by the V3 JJ Nagar Police have now occupied much of the space on the Seethakathi Salai in Mogappair East causing inconvenience to motorists. These seized vehicles were originally dumped and rusting inside the compound of a dilapi-dated government office building ground situated adjacent to the Fire and Rescue Services Station in Mogappair East. However, now the government has demolished the old build-ing and is undertaking work on constructing a new building at the place.

Due to this the police recently removed all the seized vehicles from the ground and parked them in a row on the right side of Seethakathi Salai just outside the government ground where construc-tion activity is going on.

“This is causing diffi-culty to motorists. The parked vehicles along with some huge dustbins placed on the very same road by the Greater Chennai Cor-poration to collect garbage generated in the area and a few encroached shops

When asked about this, a police personnel, who wished not to be quoted for this report, said there was no space within the V3 JJ Nagar Police Station to park the seized vehicles. “We can’t help it at all. The
