Residents of Pari Salai, a main bus route road in

Mogappair East, are wor-ried about mosquito breeding in open storm

water drains on parts of the road. A contractor engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation had dug up the cement slabs covering the storm water drain running along houses and com-

mercial establishments on this road. However after the civic works were over, at some parts of the road, the drains were left uncovered.

“Now water has stag-nated right outside our house and non-biodegrad-able wastes including polythene bags have been randomly discarded in the open storm water drainage path. The water has be-come blackish and it is leading to breeding of mosquitoes,” said a resi-dent who requested not to be named.

“It becomes very diffi-cult to sit in our shops throughout the day and battle mosquito bites in the night. Considering that dengue is spreading across the State, we are really worried if we will be affected because of mos-quito bites in the day. I wonder why the contrac-tor has not replaced the slabs to cover the drain. The recent rains have made it worse for us,” complained Ramasubbu, a worker in one of the shops on Pari Salai.

“We should have some mechanism where con-tractors who don’t do a clean job are penalised. Ideally, the government agency which awards tender works for civic projects should withhold full payment till such time the contractor not only completes the piece-

In one of the most mov-ing tragedies that has hit Mogappair, an el-

derly couple committed suicide at their house in Padi Pudunagar on Tues-day last unable to find means to fund their medi-cal needs and unwilling to be a burden on their two married sons.

The couple – Kuppusa-my, aged 67, and Kothai, aged 60, were staying at a rented house in Padi Pudu-nagar. One of their sons Vinod was staying with his wife in Third Block on Nakkeerar S t ree t in Mogappair East, while another son Rajesh was residing in Housing Board tenement in Ayapakkam.

An acquaintance of Vinod told Mogappair Mail that the couple was strug-gling to make ends meet. Kuppusamy was working as a security guard at an apartment complex in Mogappair earning a few thousand rupees as wages, while Kothai was confined to her house as she was unable to walk following a fractured leg caused by an accident.

“Kuppusamy was suf-fering from diabetes and he needed to buy medicines on a monthly basis. His children were not well off. Vinod works as a driver and Rajesh is a carpenter. It looks like Kuppusamy did not want to be a burden on his married children who too were struggling to

take care of their respective families and hence he de-cided to end his life along with Kothai. They were found hanging,” said Vinod’s acquaintance, who requested not to be named.

Only a day before their death, Kuppusamy had reportedly asked Vinod over phone for some mon-ey. He made arrangements for the same went to his parents house only to find them dead.

“This is indeed a very heart rending incident. We were moved to tears on learning that two senior citizens in our own neigh-bourhood had committed suicide for want of mone-tary help. I sincerely feel that instead of giving free-bies such as grinders or

It’s a stinking reality which the residents of Dwarakha Enclave, an apartment

constructed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) in Mogappair, have to live with on a daily basis. Resi-dents of the apartment com-plain that the Greater Chennai Corporation has kept huge garbage bins right at the en-trance of complex that is lo-cated on Kavimani Salai – Eri Scheme First Main Road Junction.

“These are the garbage bins where the kitchen and non-biodegradable wastes collected from households and com-mercial establishments situat-ed in the locality are all dumped on a daily basis. On

most occasions the dustbins overflow with garbage which is spilled all around it. No wonder we have so many mosquitoes in our apartment complex as they feast on the kitchen wastes dumped in the garbage bin,” complained a resident, requesting that she not be named.

The garbage bins are an eyesore, lament the residents. “Imagine walking in and out of our apartment complex every day and the first sight that hits you are these dis-carded wastes from the dust bins. It is such a put off you know,” said a woman who introduced herself as Kamala Mariappan and a tenant at one of the flats in Dwarakha En-clave. “We are often embar-rassed to guide visitors to our

house. Even while giving di-rections to call taxi drivers we often inexplicably end up giving the huge garbage bins at the entrance as the land-mark to spot our apartment. This is certainly not what we had bargained for when we took a flat on rent here,” she rued. “For this sole reason, sometimes I feel we should move to some other house but then our landlord gave this flat for a cheaper rent and we have decided to put up with this inconvenience,” said Kamala Mariappan.

guished that the poor land-mark to their place of stay has actually reduced its value in the rental market. “There have been quite some instances where people on the lookout for a two bed-room house on rent inquire very keenly and land here but then within no time they give some excuse to not take the house. We suspect it is because of the presence of the garbage bins. Some people are also religious and consider the dustbins at the entrance as a bad sign that could bring them less wealth,” claimed another resident.

Consuming gar l ic, which contains an active sulphurous compound, can help fight the robust bacteria found in chronic infections like cystic fibro-sis, researchers have found.

The findings showed that the sulphurous com-pound ajoene in garlic appears to offer the most powerful, naturally occur-ring resistance to bacteria and is able to destroy im-portant components in the bacteria’s communication systems, which involve regulatory RNA mole-cules.

Ajoene also damages the protective slimy matrix surrounding the bacteria, the so-called biofilm.

When the biofilm is destroyed or weakened, both antibiotics and the body’s own immune sys-tem are able to attack the bacteria more directly and thus remove the infection.

“We really believe this method can lead to treat-ment of patients, who otherwise have poor pros-pects, because chronic in-fections like cystic fibrosis can be very robust,” says a study.

“But now we have enough knowledge to fur-ther develop the garlic

club is Thiruttu Payale 2, directed by Susi Gane-shan who helmed the first part as well.

Sequels are hard to satisfy a hardcore movie buff. On that note, Susi Ganeshan has not faltered one bit to present a sump-tuous feast. The storyline could not have been sim-pler, tuned to the average teenager who has the in-ternet as his permanent companion.

Selvam (Bobby Sim-ha), a police officer is given an important task to tap the phone calls of higher officials to bring their corruption to light. During the course, he encounters the lives of various people and their dark secrets. To his shock, he finds Agal (Amala Paul), his wife also har-bouring one such secret. What is she hiding and how it impacts the lives of the couple is what Thiruttu Payale 2 is all about.

First things first, the film doesn’t have any ma-jor connection with the first part, as it is a fresh script. Director Susi’s smart writing and charac-ter sketch of the actors is impressive. The title suits

both the lead heroes as both have their own share of mischievous activities. However, Prasanna’s character will be seen ex-citing and would tell the side effects of having an u n k n ow n Fa c e b o o k friend.

The first half of the film is very smooth and goes on in the right flow, which makes it interesting to watch. The second half slightly goes off the tan-gent. Few scenes like Amala’s brother portions in the second half could have been avoided or han-dled differently, as it doesn’t have a significant impact on the screenplay.

A few scenes are con-structively written and executed, and is notable, like the scene where Bob-by tries to hack informa-tion from Prasanna’s sys-tem, the climax twist, and more. There’s a backstory for important connecting scenes, and the detailing is done neatly. Not just the main core story, even Bobby’s side stories (his mission with the IG) are enjoyable.

Susi’s intention to make people aware of the cyber crimes is seen, and he uses dialogues as the primary element to con-vey his notion and idea. Few dialogues bring out the harsh truths that are

hard to accept in reality.On the downside, the

ending given to Prasan-na’s character is not up to the expectation, and the final drama goes down without much excite-ment. The songs also act as a speed breaker, as the film in its own narrative, flows in the right pattern. Though the scenes are smartly written, the pre-

sentation lacks the punch, and there’s no elevation, through music or other elements. There are two to three places, where a few section of the audi-ences would feel that the film is going to end, but it doesn’t. Due to this exten-sion, it tests your pa-tience, and the real end-ing falls f lat when it comes.

Veteran actor-filmmak-er Kamal Haasan has re-sumed the shooting of his long-delayed project “Vishwaroopam 2” (“Vish-waroop 2” in Hindi). The final schedule of spy thrill-er film is taking place at the Officers Training Academy (OTS) in Chen-nai. Haasan, who has written, directed and is playing the lead role of a RAW agent in the film, shared a photograph with few army officers on Twit-ter on Thursday.

The movie has been simultaneously shot in Hindi and Tamil. A re-lease date for the same is yet to be announced.

Allotment of slum clearance board houses should be cancelled if the original beneficiary is found renting out his apartment to third parties, the Madras high court has ruled.

Justice S Vaidyanathan, refusing to interfere with the eviction of slum resi-dents at Karunanidhi Nagar, at present known

as Theedir Nagar on Greams Road in Thou-sand Lights, said: “In case the petitioner is found renting or leasing out the tenement/alternative ac-commodation to a third person, he shall be imme-diately evicted and the Slum Clearance Board shall allot such tenement to other allottees. To ascer-tain whether the allottee is residing in the alternative place or not, the authori-ties shall conduct a sur-prise inspection and ask for the details about the person residing there. If the allotted person or his family is not residing there, such allottee shall not be shown any indul-gence or mercy.”

The judge also held that holding of ‘testimonials’ like Aadhar card, voter identity card and ration card would not entitle an encroacher to ownership of the land.

He directed officials to hand over the token/key to Thideer Nagar resi-dents, who have been al-lotted an alternative ac-commodation at Perum-bakkam, within two days and ordered the residents to shift to new within three days. Officials must take necessary steps to accom-modate the residents’ chil-dren in schools, preferably in and around Ambattur or Thirumazhisai, within three days, said Justice Vaidyanathan.

The post with the cameras fitted (Picture) is installed at a three lane junc-tion on the 40-feet road that divides Mohanram Nagar and VGP Nagar. It may be recalled that burglars broke into an house, just opposite to the post a fort-night ago.

The residents had gone on a vacation and the heavy rains that lashed the city worked to the burglars advantage. Resi-dents as a token of gratitude have thanked Velammal for this kind gesture. Two held for selling fake products

The IPR Enforcement Cell, Chennai Unit I, En-forcers of Intellectual Property Rights (EIPR) and the city police con-ducted raids on New Al-ankar Clutch Works on

Poonamallee High Road and on Sun Clutch Works on Perumal Koil Street and seized fake products the firms were storing and selling under the brand name of Ashok Leyland.

Officials came across fake springs without MRP, kits, springs and other products falsely labelled ‘Ashok Leyland’.
