The Chennai Corporation are taking steps to avoid recurrence of what one

witnessed during the last floods. Two canals are being constructed across Mogappair west simulta-neously and this would ease the flow of waste covering a distance of nearly 2.2 kms. One canal starts from behind the Wavin bus stop and the other from near the Electricity Board Office in Nol-ambur. Both these connect at a

place near the new Nolambur Police Station from where it will flow to the Coovum behind Thai Moogambigai College.

“The old canal was construct-ed atleast three decades back with stones. Over the years it has be-come worn out and it certainly needed a concrete structure. We hope to finish the work before the start of this year’s rainy season,” said a contractor working on this project. Photo by Rathna Kumar

Illegal and haphazard parking of cars, two-wheel-ers and an assortment of vehicles right in front of some bus stops in Anna Nagar is posing hurdles to many commuters who take the buses operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to reach their respective desti-nations.

These bus stops located on the Anna Nagar Round-tana-Thirumangalam Junc-tion Road have been con-structed by the Metropoli-tan Transport Corporation or the Greater Chennai Corporation. Commuters waiting to board buses to different destinations such as Anna Nagar West De-pot, Ambattur Industrial

Estate and Ambattur Old Terminus usually take shel-ter at the bus stops.

However, of late there is an increasing tendency among those coming to Anna Nagar to shop to park their cars and other private vehicles right in front of these bus stops preventing rightful access to bus com-muters.

“On many occasions we are not even able to spot the bus stop as the vehicles are parked in front of them blocking access to us. Due to this we are forced to stand on the road awaiting the arrival of our respective bus services. Such illegal parking would end up de-feating the purpose of pub-lic transport and could lead to increase in carbon foot prints due to use of private

vehicles,” complained Maya Mahalingam, a bus commuter on 11th Main Road in Anna Nagar.

Commuters such as Pon-nusamy, who was seated at the bus stand, pointed out that the haphazard and il-legal parking of vehicles in front of the bus stop hin-dered free flow of passen-gers. “We can’t stand on the road endlessly waiting for our bus. So most often we sit at the bus shelter. But when our bus arrives, we find it difficult to negotiate our way safely squeezing ourselves in between parked cars to board the bus. As it is, many drivers of Metro-politan Transport Corpora-tion do not wait till all passengers have boarded the bus before starting the vehicle. The parking of ve-

hicles makes our lives dif-ficult,” he contended.

Sometimes, bus drivers do not stop at the bus stand as they are unable to see the passengers who are seated under the shelter due to the vehicles parked in front. “We are even unable to stand up and run behind the bus to draw the attention of the conductor or driver. Vehicle parking should be regulated. The Chennai City Traffic Police usually warn share auto rickshaw drivers not to park near bus stands but are turning a blind eye to illegal parking by car owners.

This has to end,” said Farook, a resident of Mogappair East, who works in a garment shop on 12th Main Road and takes the bus to commute.

of Class 12 board exams has been com-pleted, the Tamil Nadu government has planned to publish the results on May 16 without further delay.

Despite a series of teachers’ agita-tions, the government managed to complete the evaluation process on May 7. In addition, the answer paper evaluation of Class 10 board exams was also completed and the results will be published as per schedule on May 23.

The online registration for ad-mission to engineering courses in Tamil Nadu has touched the 45,000 mark. With just a couple of weeks left for the last date for registering applications, about 1.5 lakh stu-dents are expected to get them-selves enrolled into engineering colleges in the state through online counselling.

In a big relief to engineering aspirants from rural areas, the School Education Department in-formed the Madras High Court on Friday that this year, in addition to the online payment facility for registration, provision will be made by way of demand draft at the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admis-sion Facilitation Centres (TFCs).

The State Govern-ment has made the registrat ion of

pregnant women manda-tory under its Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Moni-toring and Evaluation (PICME) system to get birth certificate for the new born.

P r e g n a n t w o m e n would now be required to register their names and details with the Health Centre of the Greater Chennai Corporation. The Government Order

makes it compulsory for all women who are preg-nant to register their names and other relevant details within 60 days of their pregnancy. By doing so they can also avail of free treatment until the delivery of the baby and also avail of post natal care services free of cost.

Residents living in and around the Mogappair neighbourhood have be-gun to register pregnancies with the Health Centre of the Greater Chennai Cor-poration in Ambattur Zone to obtain the RCH

ID (Reproductive and Child Health Number). This unique number is required to obtain the birth certificate for the to-be-born child.

They should register on PICME website at the beginning of pregnancy while scan and vaccina-tion are being done. They can also call 102. A 12-dig-it code, which is the RCH ID, will be issued to the women.

Further, for those avail-ing private healthcare, the private hospitals have been directed by the govern-ment to issue the PICME ID for the pregnant wom-en. “The idea behind this latest initiative of the State Government is to avoid infant and maternal mor-tality. Medicines, monthly check ups and scanning will be done free of cost. Even after delivery vita-min and calcium supple-ments will be given to the mothers. Post-delivery, women tend to develop lot of complications such as blood pressure, sugar and thyroid problems. It they are given perfect care dur-ing and after pregnancy all such complications can be

averted,” explains C Am-saveni, Urban Health Nurse, Mogappair West.

She further said that we have more than 50,000 government hospitals in Tamil Nadu and several health centres are register-ing pregnant women for this purpose. For the ben-efit of the people in Mogappair, the Health Centre is located at the Greater Chennai Corpo-ration Building in the First Block of Mogappair West. “Including me two other nurses are in charge for the Mogappair registrations. Monthly at least 25 regis-trations should be done. We have been conducting campaigns in all the pri-vate nursing homes to create awareness among the people about this ini-tiative. We have given posters to the hospitals, which they will put up on the notice boards. Doctors will also advise them to get the RCH ID numbers,” she added.

What the couples need to do is to show the Aaad-har Card and pregnancy confirmed test reports to the nurse in the health centre. They can also get their tests done in the health centre and confirm their pregnancy. If they don’t register they can never get the birth certifi-cate for the children, she said.

Nandita Shweta had been clear in her stance that no two films of hers had to be on the same lines and the genre. A good five years away from that and with a settled look, she has been having the best of both worlds - having had a racy start to her Telugu career and a prestigious award to boot with.

Shuttling between Kollywood and Tollywood - presently giving the finishing touches to her second Telugu film `Srinivasa Kalyanam’ - the actor said happy she is to be in the best phase of her career with pounding offers and the producers willing to give her the extended space.

On her latest ‘Namrada’ all set to roll where she plays the mother of a seven-year-old, Nandita said she could not wait for the shoot to begin. “There are two dimensions to my characters where in the first moiety, I play a carefree school girl

with gay abandon. Please do not read between the lines with the character firmly etched before the next phase. The mother character will find me showering affection on the child, the script giving enough leeway for an extended portrayal, pained by the vagaries of life, where she is left all her own by the society, not kind to the trauma, a hapless mother is subjected to. The Chennai City Traffic Police has introduced regula-

tions in movement of ve-hicles on the Poonamallee High Road (Koyambedu-Maduravoyal High Road stretch) restricting motor-ists from taking a right turn towards Rail Nagar between 9 am and 11 am every day. The recent reg-ulation has been intro-duced to prevent traffic chaos at the intersection where vehicles take a steep down bridge to enter Rail Nagar and proceed to Padikuppam Road and beyond including parts of Mogappair East.

The Koyambedu Traf-fic Police, under whose jurisdiction this area falls, have placed a sign board stating that vehicle drivers would not be allowed to take a right turn to Rail Nagar during the specified two hours. The police have also installed make-shift iron barricades at the intersection to ensure that this restriction in traffic movement is not violated by errant motorists.

"During peak morning hours, there is absolute chaos on this road as hun-dreds of vehicles use this stretch. Allowing traffic on four sides to and from Rail Nagar Bridge is not feasible as it leads to heavy

congesting. Therefore, this measure restricting traffic movement from the Poonamallee High Road towards Rail Nagar Bridge has been introduced," ex-plained a Chennai City Traffic Police personnel deployed at the spot, re-questing not to be named for this report.

However, a section of motorists has not taken the restriction kindly and is demanding restoration of the right turn at the inter-section near Rail Nagar Bridge during morning hours. "If we miss taking this right turn, we have to go all the way to the inter-section near the Madura-voyal New Bridge to enter Mogappair East and from there take a diversion to reach the Padikuppam Road. This means we have to take a cumulative detour of around three kilome-tres. Such a circuitous route can’t be taken during peak hours when we are rushing to our offices," la-mented Balachandran, a motorist and resident of Koyambedu who takes the stretch to reach a work-shop on Padikuppam Road.

"Instead of barring the right turn, the traffic po-lice must explore the op-tion of installing a signal at this intersection so that the flow of the vehicular movement is regulated and road users are not put to hardship," suggested Johnny, a resident of Rail Nagar.
