Father Gary Writes

The following was originally ascribed as flowing from the pen of Pope Francis, but this has subsequently been denied, but the sentiments certainly ring true, and whoever wrote it was inspired!

“You may have defects, be anxious and sometimes live irritated, but do not forget that your life is the greatest enterprise in the world. Only you can prevent it from going into decadence. There are many that need you, admire you and love you. I would like to remind you that being happy is not having a sky without storms, or roads without accidents, or work without fatigue, or relationships without disappointments.

Being happy is finding strength in forgiveness, hope in one’s battles, security at the stage of fear, love in disagreements.

Being happy is not only to treasure the smile, but that you also reflect on the sadness. It is not just commemorating the event, but also learning lessons in failures. It is not just having joy with the applause, but also having joy in anonymity.

Being happy is to recognize that it is worthwhile to live, despite all the challenges, misunderstandings and times of crises. Being happy is not an inevitable fate, but a victory for those who can travel towards it with your own being. Being happy is to stop being a victim of problems but become an actor in history itself. It is not only to cross the deserts outside of ourselves, but still more, to be able to find an oasis in the recesses of our soul. It is to thank God every morning for the miracle of life.

Being happy is not being afraid of one’s feelings. It is knowing how to talk about ourselves. It is to bear with courage when hearing a ‘no.’ It is to have the security to receive criticism, even if it is unfair. It is to kiss the children, pamper the parents, have poetic moments with friends, even if they have hurt us.

Being happy means allowing the free, happy and simple child inside each of us to live; having the maturity to say, ‘I was wrong’; having the audacity to say, ‘forgive me.’ It is to have sensitivity in express-ing, ‘I need you’; to have the ability of saying, ‘I love you.’

So, that your life becomes a garden full of opportunities for being happy…… In your spring time, may you become a lover of joy. In your winter, may you become a friend of wisdom. And when you go wrong along the way, you start all over again. Thus, you will be more passionate about life. And you will find that happiness is not about having a perfect life but about using tears to water tolerance, losses to refine patience, failures to carve serenity, pain to lapidate pleasure, obstacles to open the windows of intelligence.

Never give up! Never give up on the people you love. Never give up from being happy because life is an incredible show.

And you are a special human being!”

A COMMUNITY OF FAITH, KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE

Anne Penny, Ph. D., has been the Principal of St. Charles Catholic School in Winnipeg, a multi-parish

owned school, since 2007. With both American and Canadian experience as a university professor, teacher and administrator, she has spent her career teaching children, developing teachers and initiating educational programs. Dr. Penny received three graduate degrees comprised of both Catholic School Leadership and Music Education. In addition, she holds two Bachelor Degrees, one of which is in Education.

Dr. Penny has teaching experience at all grade levels and has taught in schools in Saskatchewan, Mississippi, Georgia and Manitoba. She has several years of experience in professorial positions with post-secondary institutions, including those in Mississippi, Elizabeth City State University and Turtle Mountain Community College. In 2010, she was appointed as a Director on the Manitoba Federation of Independent Schools’ Board, a position she still holds, and served as MFIS Education Committee Chair. Dedicated to staying current with trends and challenges in Catholic education in the contemporary world, Dr. Penny has attended many Catholic educational forums. These involve NCEA Conferences, including the session in Houston where she was a presenter. She was a delegate for the “Educating Today and Tomorrow” Congress held in Rome in November 2015 at which participants discussed the challenges facing Catholic schools throughout the world and shared this with Pope Francis. After years of experience guided by research, Dr. Penny believes in the value of music in developing the whole child. To this end, she has founded several string programs. Through musical performances, students have been able to project the school mission into the community.

Born and raised in Brandon, Manitoba, Dr. Penny comes from a large Catholic family. She is strengthened and supported by her husband and family who “share my love of the Church and belief in Catholic education. I look forward to being a part of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Parish Family. It promises to be an exciting journey of learning as we grow together in Christ.”

At the foot of the Cross, a grieving mother, a loving son: “Woman here is your Son, here is your Mother” (John 19:26-27)

Mary could hardly bear to look at her son, yet she couldn’t take her eyes off of him. Mary was not only present, she was close. Close enough to see him, to touch him, to hear him groan in agony. The face she had scrubbed clean a thousand times was almost unrecognizable. His head fell limp to the side, and his eyes were barely open, encrusted with blood and dirt. Mary who had watched Jesus draw his first breath now watched him breathe his last. We can almost feel Mary’s heart breaking on this terrible day – worse than any she ever imagined. But Mary no doubt drew strength from God above, and from the women who remained with her. Jesus, hanging on the cross as strangers walked by mocking and degrading him.

She didn’t crouch in fear, nor slump to the ground in defeat, and surely she did not turn away. Isn’t that what God asked us to do? To stand, to believe, to wait, to trust. From the Cross Jesus fixed his eyes on the woman who loved him the most. The Son of God who had looked into Mary’s eyes as a nursing infant, and who walked towards her outstretched arms as a toddler. Now he watches her weeping as a mother about to lose her first born child. But Jesus, with such tenderness in his voice said to Mary, “Woman here is your Son,” showing how abundantly clear his love for his mother was. He was assuring her she would not be alone, that she would be provided for and loved. Honor thy mother and father. This loving gesture at the Cross must have reassured Mary that he still loved her as his Mother. He had not abandoned her and he never would. Why then do we ever think that God would abandon us in our need? Mary stayed and stayed with all the pain she was enduring. She kept her eyes on Jesus. Even when hope seemed gone she stayed. What a wonderful example for us to follow.

All of us will at some time face a crisis. Perhaps it will be a job termination, or the result of a medical test, or the loss of a precious family member or friend. But just as Jesus showed Mary, he never stops loving us for even one second of our lives. He refuses to leave us alone, especially in our time of need. He loves us because he wants to, not because he has to, or because we deserve it. We are his children. So be like Mary, stay and draw strength from her. Just like Mary, we all have a vital role to play in God’s plan. We are all part of the puzzle, not the most important piece, but rather a very significant piece, a piece that is very important and necessary to achieve God’s will.

On Monday, May 29, the country celebrates Memorial Day, a day we set aside to remember our deceased servicemen and women. No doubt it will also be a day for many of opening old wounds and pain, but hopefully this pain will be intermingled with joy, love and hilarity. On this day let us show our appreciation by performing two random acts of kindness in honor of America’s fallen heroes!

ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL 2017 Thank you to the 417 families that have responded generously to the 2017 Annual Pastoral Appeal on behalf of our parish. We have reached $150,745 of our goal amount of $242,569. Rejoice in Hope by remembering those in most need. If you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please prayerfully consider the blessings you have received.

Recently our diocese celebrated the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Jude where the holy oils were blessed and Sacred Chrism consecrated for use by our parish priests to anoint the sick, baptize our newest Catholics, confirm our young people and adults, and ordain our new priests. And the priests in our diocese renewed their commitment to their holy priestly service. Every day we are given the opportunity to attend the celebration of the Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist because of our dedicated parish priests. May we never take for granted that we have committed parish priests that can give the gift of the Sacraments to us and our children.

On Saturday, May 20th

at 11:00am Elixavier “Xavy” Castro will be ordained to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ at the Cathedral of St. Jude in St. Petersburg. Please surround him in prayer as he prepares to receive the grace of the priesthood. Please make a gift from your heart, knowing you may be helping a young man and his formation in the priesthood. By participating in the Annu-al Pastoral Appeal, you will have helped our seminarians become our future priests.

WE REMEMBER, WE CELEBRATE, WE BELIEVE

All are welcome to join us in prayer and attend Mass at the outdoor altar on Memorial Day and All Souls Day, and on the last Saturday of every month at 10:00am in the Chapel of the Resurrection.

We remember, we celebrate and we believe.

MONTH’S MIND MASS Sat., May 27 at 10:00am

Chapel of the Resurrection The Mass was rescheduled from a weekday to better accommodate the loved ones of those laid to rest the prior month. During the Mass, the recently interred are prayed for by name and family members light a candle in their memory. People who have passed and have no know survivors as well as all at Calvary are remembered in prayer during the Liturgy. All are welcome.

Since 1960, Calvary has provid-ed holy and sacred burial

grounds for the Tampa Bay area with strong roots centered in the Catholic belief. Calvary’s inground and entombment facilities are nestled in a tranquil setting surrounded by the beauty of God’s natural creation. We welcome you to tour our website and then contact us so that we may be of personal service to you for your planning or immediate needs.

THE MASS and MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day has always been special at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. It is the only cemetery serving the five-county Diocese of St. Petersburg where the true fullness of freedom - both sacred and secular - are ob-served on this national holiday. On May 29 at 10am some of the priests of the Diocese of St. Petersburg will gather at the outdoor altar to cele-brate the holy sacrifice of the Mass - a memorial of the death and resur-rection of Jesus who freed mankind from the bonds of sin - and to re-member, honor and pray for those who have maintained the freedoms that we enjoy as United States citizens.

IN OUR PARISH AND THE AREA

BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP Tues, May 9, 6:30-8pm, DuBois A

The readings for the next meeting are The First Epistle of Paul to Timothy, Ch 1-4. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Newcomers are always welcome. Call John 733-4065 for details.

Congratulations Our Lady of Lourdes Church and School!

We are honored to receive this award for the fourth year in a row!

FORMED FEATURE OF THE WEEK

Raised in a happy, atheist home, she had the freedom to think for herself and play by her own rules. Jennifer Fulwiler told her-self she was happy. Why would-n't she be? Yet a creeping dark-ness followed her all her life. Finally, one winter night, it drove her to the edge of her balcony, making her ask once and for all why anything mattered. At that moment, everything she knew and believed was shattered. Asking the unflinching ques-tions about life and death, good and evil, led Jennifer to Christianity, the religion she had reviled since she was an awkward, skeptical child growing up in the Bible Belt. Something other than God is a poignant, profound and often funny tale of one woman who set out to find the meaning of life and discovered that true happiness sometimes requires losing it all.

PARKING LOT MAINTENANCE Maintenance work is underway on the campus park-ing lots and will continue through the end of May. It will include asphalt repair, sealing, and re-striping. This will require closing down sections of the parking lots for short periods of time. Thank you for your patience while we do the necessary maintenance and repairs.
