The 9am Mass will be transferred to 8am and there will be NO morning

confession, exposition, or benediction.

Father Gary Writes Just by looking through the bulletin, one can see that there is a lot going on in the parish, and I would like to highlight a few of these events in this column.

First, ‘Find Your Greatness,’ on Saturday, January 27th from

9:30am to 2:00pm in the church, presented by Dr. Allen Hunt from ‘Dynamic Catholic.’ Tickets are selling fast! I am hoping it will be a sell-out! You can purchase your tickets after Mass or online: www.ourladydunedin.org. Our lives change when our habits change. Based on Matthew Kelly’s book The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic, this half-day event will introduce you to four simple habits that will help you reach your full potential. This event is suitable for children/young people twelve and over. Childcare is available, please call the Faith Formation Office: (727) 733-0872. The children at childcare will receive a snack and lunch. There will be two short breaks during Dr. Hunt’s presentations, water and a snack bar will be served, there will not be time for a full lunch break. We will be fed in many other ways! This event is so inspiring, it will light a fire in your heart!

We are looking forward to the visit of two very important gentlemen on Sunday, February 4

th at the 11:30 Mass: our Bishop, Gregory

Parkes, and Monsignor William DuBois, our founding pastor. The Bishop will confirm our young people in their faith, and Msgr. DuBois will be with us to celebrate the beginning of our Diamond Jubilee Year. I encourage as many of you as possible to come to this Mass, to give thanks to God for the past, to affirm the present, and place our hope in the future.

On Thursday, February 8th

, as we prepare for our Parish Feast Day (Our Lady of Lourdes, Sunday February 11

th), a Mass of Anointing

will be celebrated at 11am. There is no doubt that Lourdes is a very special place, not only for the physically sick, but also for those who seek inner healing. We all need Christ’s healing love. The Sacrament of Anointing affirms Christ’s healing presence among us. We will welcome residents from our local Nursing Homes and Assist-ed Living Facilities, and some of our homebound, to this special Mass. Everyone is, of course, welcome to attend!

On Saturday, February 10th

, we are hosting the most glamourous night in Tampa Bay! It is our ‘Saints and Sinners Ball’: ‘Diamonds Are Forever.’ This year will be extra special as we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee! You can show up as James Bond, Mrs. Money-penny, a spy, or the Queen! If you are fabulous (as we all are) there is a place at the table for you! Reserve your seats online: www.ourladydunedin.org or by calling the Parish Office: (727) 733- 3606. Buy your 50/50 Raffle Tickets (prize money is usually in the region of $6,000). Diamonds, Tiaras, Silent and Live Auctions, Great Food, Open Bar, trip to London: what more can one ask for! It promises to be a night like no other. This year the party continues till the midnight hour! Life is never dull at Our Lady of Lourdes!

THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Friday, February 2 at 9am Mass

This feast celebrates the presentation of Christ in the temple at Jerusalem on the 40th day after his birth when Simeon proclaimed Jesus as the Light of Salvation (Luke 2:29-32). The feast is also called Candlemas because of the tradition of the blessing of candles. You are invited to bring candles from home to Mass on Feb. 2 and have them blessed.

THE FEAST OF ST. BLAISE Blessing of Throats

Saturday, February 3 at 9am Mass St. Blaise’s protection of those with throat troubles comes from the story of a boy who was choking on a fish bone and was brought to St. Blaise, who healed him.

The Altar Flowers were donated In Memory of Frances Rehm From her loving daughter, Pam

Thank you to Annette Urbanik, who donated the peace lilies in the Narthex grotto in celebration of our parish jubilee.

5. Today’s catechetical textbooks/resources offer outstanding support.

6. You’ll be challenged, you’ll have fun, and you’ll make new friends.

7. You’ll be helping people deepen their relationship with Jesus. (You’ll be evangelizing!)

In Spanish class, we began the school year working hard during National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15). We recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States, celebrating their heritage and culture.

Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with century-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.

Started in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of Independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their Independence Day during this period. Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is celebrated October 12.

The terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” refer to Puerto Rican, South and Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. On the 2010 census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or "another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin." At Our Lady of Lourdes we recognize the diversity of the children of God. During this month, in different classes, students work on various projects researching and presenting facts about holidays and traditions from some of the Spanish speaking countries. We learn about things such as: typical garments worn in Mexico, the Day of the Dead, La Feria de Seville in Spain, famous people, like Sonia Soto Mayor and her important job in the Supreme court, and beautiful traditions like the Quinceañera celebrations in South and Central America. We will continue the year learning and practicing the Spanish language and enjoying the differences between our cultures.

2018 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL Commitment Weekend is January 27 and 28

This year the theme of the Annual Pastoral Appeal is Blessed are we..., a message that displays a great opportunity to give thanks for our own blessings and joyfully be a source of hope and life for each other and people in need here and now, and in the future. Together, let’s pray that the Holy Spirit will guide our journey and bestow His grace upon us as we serve others. Please pray for the success of our appeal, which reaches beyond ourselves and our parish, and gives hope to thousands through the ministries, programs, and services that enrich a Christ-centered way of life. Our parish commitment weekend is on January 27 and 28. Please bring your intent card from home or pick up an in-pew pledge envelope at Mass and come prepared to participate and be part of the blessing.

Please pray for the success of the 2018 Annual Pastoral Appeal. Let us pray for our parish and our diocese, that those in need of charity, service, formation, and education will be assisted with God’s promise of love and mercy. Let us pray that by our witness and response, those in need will know the same comfort and hope that we have in our hearts and lives.

Lord of all creation, You are the reason for our beginning

and the end to which we aspire. Every moment, every breath comes from you.

With gratitude for our past, joy in our present moment

and hope as we embrace our future, blessed are we,

your faithful people of the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

We give you thanks and praise as we celebrate 50 years as a local Church.

Guide us in the years to follow, that we will reaffirm our commitment

to live as missionary disciples of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we offer our prayer with the help of your Holy Spirit.

Amen.

SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY

January 21, 2018 This year will be the 45th memorial of Roe v. Wade. This weekend is set aside every year to celebrate the gift of life. It is also a day of reflection and prayer for the 58 million innocent lives that have been lost due to the tragedy of abortion. Though abortion has been decreas-ing steadily in America since 1990, abortion is still by far the leading cause of death if included. But sadly, it is not included as a “cause of death”. Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton created a legal system in America for abortion on-demand throughout all nine months of pregnancy and this massive loss of life.

Prayer for the Sanctity of Life God, You treasure life, may we understand this. Most High, we worship You as the creator and sustainer of all things. You have breathed life into all that is living, and in You all is held together. Yet among Your creation there is nothing You cherish more than human life. From the earliest stages to the last, You see each life as sacred.

God, You treasure life, may we appreciate this. We pray for eyes to see the sacredness of each life, as You do. May we see Your likeness in each life, even from the very beginning. May we see boundless worth in each life, even from the very begin-ning. May we see Divine purpose in each life, even from the very beginning.

God, You treasure life, may we join You in this. From creation, You have cared for life. We pray for compassion to protect those who cannot protect themselves. We pray for courage to stand for those who cannot stand for themselves. We pray for wisdom to defend those who cannot defend themselves.

God, You treasure life, may we represent You in this.
