Father Gary writes
Mission Statement “Our Lady of Lourdes Parish is a family of believers, embraced by the Father’s love, nourished by Jesus in Word and Sacrament, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Inspired by Mary we commit ourselves to live and proclaim the Gospel of Salvation.”
We are in the midst of preparing our school for its grand reopening on Monday, August 24th. Yes, we will be opening on that day! Our new Principal, Bobby Yevich, has put together a first class ‘back to school’ plan, which can be viewed on our school website: www.myoll.com. If you are looking for a Christ centered, safe, secure, happy and loving environment for your children and grand-children, Our Lady of Lourdes is the place to be. You can take a virtual tour of the school via the website or call the school office for a personal tour: (727) 733-3776. Please read the plan, where your questions can be answered! Please pray for our school faculty and staff who return tomorrow to prepare for the new school year. Our priority is the safety and security of all our children.
We have welcomed Jim Mascarenhas as the new Director for Faith Formation, Evangelization, Family Life and Youth. He is in the midst of creating a brand-new Sunday Formation Program ‘Quest Kids: Guiding Kids to the Light of Christ,’ beginning September 13th. Jim has developed a COVID-19 Faith Formation Reopening Plan, available on our website: www.ourladydunedin.org. As we maneuver through this challenging time, we will continue to offer high quality programming for our children and young people in a safe and loving environment. EDGE (Middle School) resumes on Wednesday, September 9th, and LIFE TEEN DUNEDIN (High School) on Sunday, September 13th. Confirmation preparation and the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process also resume in September. Please invite family and friends to come to know Christ in the Catholic Church. We will be celebrating First Communion at the 9:30 and 11:30am Masses on Sunday, September 27th (delayed from May). These Masses are being coordinated through the Faith Formation Office. For more information, check the website or call Jim: (727) 733-0872.
It is important (vital) for our children and young people to experience as much normality as possible for the well-being of their health, both mental and physical. Yes, we must have measures in place to safeguard their health, but we don’t want to completely exclude them from interacting with others, especially their peers. We are created to be in communion with one another. Neither must we neglect our spiritual health. What makes for a healthy spiritual life, especially during these difficult days? Medical doctor and author, Deepak Chopra, suggests the following: having a sense of meaning and purpose; loving and being loved; fostering self-esteem, a sense of your own dignity and worth; tapping into inner peace and joy; being of service to others (we all need to look beyond ourselves, beyond our own front door); becoming generous of spirit. For these reasons alone, we need to remain close to Christ through the community of the Church. In the midst of the tension, fear and anxiety of the present moment, we need Christ to calm our fears, affirm our dignity, and mold us into the very best version of ourselves. We need Christ, we need each other, we need the Church!

Attending Mass Unless you are seated with immediate family members, please keep a distance of 6 feet from others in the pew. When attending Mass, it is required that you wear a face covering to protect yourself, as well as others around you. We also ask that you use the hospital grade hand sanitizer provided at the entrances, as it is a special formula that will not damage the pews. PLEASE NOTE: The Dispensation from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass remains in effect until further notice. If you consider yourself to be vulnerable, or have health conditions, please remain at home.
Techies Wanted! The Our Lady of Lourdes AV Ministry is currently seeking “tech savvy” individuals to help operate our lyric slides and live stream. If you, or someone you know, is interested in getting involved with this ministry, please contact John Oreskovich at (727) 733-3606 or email [email protected]. Train-ing will be provided.
The Parish Office is Open for Business
Beginning Monday, August 3 Masks are Required
There is a mailbox in the lobby for dropping off envelopes and other mail. If you require personal assistance, you can ring the bell to gain entrance to the office. If you do enter, please remember to social distance and wear a mask.
Pinellas Hope Meals Throughout the pandemic we have still been able to continue our bi-monthly ministry to the residents at Pinellas Hope, the Diocesan shelter for the homeless. We are blessed with wonderful volunteers who cook and prepare the meals in our cafeteria. While we no longer serve the meals, we continue to deliver a delicious HOT meal – and the residents (some two hundred) are truly grateful! The cost of this ministry per month is $746, which was financed through the Sunday Breakfast Café. We closed the Café in March due to COVID-19, and we will be unable to reopen the Café until September 2021 due to the present uncertainty and strict cleaning requirements for the school. If you are able to sup-port this ministry, please mail/deliver your gift to the parish office marked ‘Pinellas Hope’ or place your gift in one of the collection baskets in the church. You can also give ONLINE via the parish website: www.ourladydunedin.org. Let us continue this wonderful ministry fulfilling the words of Jesus: “For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink. What you did to one of the least of my brothers and sisters, you did to me.” (Matthew 25:31-46).
Receiving Communion Please remember to remove your mask as you approach the priest or minister for Holy Communion, and maintain a safe distance between yourself and other communicants. Thank you.

2020 Annual Pastoral Appeal In 2006, Bishop Robert N. Lynch began the Ministries of Mercy initiative to support and foster parish ministries that serve the poor, suffering and marginalized, modeled after the Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, visiting the imprisoned, giving drink to the thirsty, and burying the dead. These were identified as a priority in the diocese. Today these ministries of mercy are very present in our parishes and communities across the dio-cese serving thousands who come to our doors seeking help, and are integral to the life of the Catholic Church following Jesus’ example of reaching out to the poor. The Focus is on five areas where the need is the greatest:
Food & Clothing Ministries: feed the hungry, collect food for food pantries, deliver meals to the homebound. Shelter Ministries: provide shelter to the homeless and those in challenging situations, including any ministries that work with housing for any special population and utility shut-off, eviction and foreclosure notices. Life Ministries: work to teach respect for all human life from conception to natural death, organize for its protec-tion, encourage and enable programs to meet the needs of pregnant women, children, persons with disabilities, those who are sick or dying, and all who have been in-volved in abortion, and with refugees, and immigrants. Visitation Ministries: bring reconciliation, healing, and the love of God to prisoners, the homebound and to those in nursing homes. Health Ministries: provide medical care to the under-served members of the community. They include parish nursing, people who work with clinics, and free clinics operated by Catholic Charities.
These ministries need your help and are aided by your APA dollars.
To date, 474 families have pledged $165,386 toward our required goal of $228,225. We have collected 144,453 of those pledges. For those who have made a gift or pledge to the Annual Pastoral Appeal, thank you. Your sacrifice will help support the Ministries of Mercy and bring hope to thousands suffering across our diocese.
Hidden in Plain Sight Today’s Gospel is a familiar story. A large crowd gathers to hear Jesus speak, and we learn that there were ‘about five thousand men, not counting women and children.’ Matthew 14:21. If all were counted, the actual size of the crowd might have been anywhere from double to triple that number. That makes Jesus’ feeding of such a large gathering with only five small loaves and two fish a true miracle. Yet the miracle is not simply, as many people think, Jesus performing some sort of superior magic trick to impress us or to fool us. Instead he is pointing to a greater truth for us to ponder, and he uses signs and symbols to get our attention. Signs and symbols surround us. They are a vital part of every human culture, but they vary in meaning from one part of the world to another. For example, the color red often denotes danger in most Western countries; in the East it is the color of celebra-tion. Similarly, a handshake, a bow, an embrace, or a hug all have different interpretations in different cultures. In this Gospel story the feeding of the crowd is a sign of Jesus’ power to feed so many with so little, and a symbol of the eucharistic bread we still share today. At the same time, remember that small gem of phrasing in the story that is worth considering—“not counting women and children.” This is significant, for many societies today do not consider women or children equal to men. Who does “not count” or is hidden among the crowd in the commu-nity of faith? How can we feed those who are starving—for attention, a kind word, a helping hand? What can we do personally that might make all the difference?

Saint John Vianney Feast Day - August 4
Patron Saint of Parish Priests May 8, 1786 – August 4, 1859
Often referred to as the Curé d'Ars (the parish priest of Ars), Fr. Vianney was internationally known for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish in Ars, France, because of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings. Catholics attribute this to his saintly life, mortification, persevering ministry in the sacrament of confession, and ardent devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. John Mary Vianney was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925.
