Father Gary writes

Today marks the conclusion of the Christmas Festival with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. As I have often asked, do you know the date and place of your own Baptism? If so, make sure you celebrate it in some way each year. Pope St. John Paul II acclaimed his baptism as the most important day of his life. Give thanks for the gift of your baptismal vocation. Our baptism intimately unites us to our Savior Jesus Christ and to the family of the Church throughout the world, transforming our lives for all eternity. We have been celebrating baptisms nearly every Sunday since we reopened after the ‘lockdown’. It is a joy and privilege to baptize. Of course there is nothing magical about baptism. The Sacrament lays the foundation stones on which we build our relationship with Christ and the Church for mission in the world. We are all on mission, we are all evangeliz-ers by virtue of our baptism. We are anointed with two oils, the Oil of Baptism (Strength) and the Oil of Chrism, derived from the name ‘Christ’, which means ‘Anointed One’. The Chrism is a scented oil, as we are called to fill this world with the aroma, the presence of Christ, this is our privilege, challenge and joy. The white baptismal garment affirms our dignity as sons and daughters of God. No one ever has the right to undermine our dignity and worth. The alb (‘alb’ means white in Latin) the priests and our altar servers wear, reminds us of our Christian dignity, that through the waters of baptism we are clothed in Christ.

Our Baptismal Candle is to be kept burning brightly because we have been enlightened by Christ. We do not walk in the dark, we walk in the light of Christ, guided each day by the light of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church. Water is the great symbol of life. Through the waters of baptism we are blessed with eternal life. What a privilege and joy to be baptized into the life and mission of the Risen Christ.

Baptismal Blessings

For the mother…….. The Lord God Almighty, through his Son, born of the Virgin Mary, brings joy to Christian mothers as the hope of eternal life shines forth upon their children. May he graciously bless the mother of this child, so that, as she now gives thanks for the gift of her child, she may always remain united with him/her in thanksgiving, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

For the father……. May the Lord God Almighty, the giver of life both in heaven and earth, bless the father of this child, so that, together with his wife, they may, by word and example, prove to be the first witnesses of the faith to their child, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

May we be faithful disciples and witnesses to your Gospel through Baptism and Confirmation. Lead us through holiness of life to the joys of heaven. Amen.

ENCOURAGE . ENRICH . EMPOWER

As the Spanish teacher, I am in contact with all the students at school. This is an excellent and

challenging opportunity. Every day is a totally different experience, and I am always looking for ways to make their learning experience fun and engaging. One of the best experiences so far was with the fifth-grade students during the unit “El Salón de clase” (The Classroom) where they created their ideal classroom. In the “Mi clase Ideal” project they had the opportunity to use all the new vocabulary words to describe their ideal classroom. They wrote a paragraph describing the classroom, illustrated the classroom by creating a poster or drawing , and participated in an oral presentation about that ideal classroom. The best part was that everything they did was in Spanish! They put a great deal of effort into doing the project entirely in Spanish. It was a very rewarding experience for the students and me. We look forward to having more experiences like this one, where they can put their Spanish knowledge into practice.

STEWARDSHIP: TIME, TALENT, TREASURE

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

At the beginning of Advent we heard the words of John the Baptist, proclaiming the promised Messiah. Now, at the end of the Christmas season, he appears again in the Gospel story. John was a surprising person. He had taken on the dress and role of a prophet, wandering the desert surviving on locusts and wild honey. He drew large crowds, declaring to them that it was not enough to be born Jewish; everyone—men and women, rich and poor, tax collectors and prostitutes—needed to repent and be washed clean. When he baptized Jesus (Mark 1:7-–11), the appearance of the Holy Spirit was not of John’s doing and showed who Jesus really is. It marked the new reality that Jesus brings. To go into the waters of baptism is a symbol of death and rebirth to a new life, while the baptism of the Holy Spirit gives an inner spiritual power to live as a child of God. After Jesus’ death and resurrection the apostles continued to baptize new believers in water, and laid hands on them to confer the Holy Spirit. For many of us, baptism and confirmation occurred when we were too young to realize their true meaning. Think about it now! God has given us grace and power to live as God’s own sons and

daughters, with the hope of eternal life. But we can’t just sit back. The life of grace we are called to requires effort, persistence, sacrifice, and selflessness. The enemy of the life of faith, which constantly lurks in the background, is not unbelief but apathy. We get tired of trying, we want to take it easy, we fall prey to the idea that someone else can do it. But a life with Christ says if not now, when? If not you, who else?

Living Stewardship Now

“Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received—only what you have given.” —Saint Francis of Assisi (1181–1226), religious founder, mystic

WE ARE A DYNAMIC PARISH. BE BOLD. BE CATHOLIC.

Soul, You have the heart of a lion,

strong and courageous. Let nothing

distract you, let nobody discourage

you from your daily communion

with the one who created you.

Amen.

1. Matthew says that some dreams we had when we were younger were ill suited for us, and we were ill suited for them. Can you think of a dream you had or something that you really want-ed when you were younger, but are glad it didn’t come to be?

2. Did you learn prayers in

school? At home? Did anyone teach you how to pray?

3. Matthew says in the book, “In prayer

we learn how to love and be loved, because we discover that we have been loved, are loved, and will contin-ually be loved by God.” How have you experienced the love of God? Do you believe that God loves you as Matthew describes? Do you have a story of someone who loves unconditionally like God does in your own life?

4. We each experience storms in our

lives; how have you weathered storms in the past? After reading this part of the book, how do you think you will handle storms in the future? So often we think that we can fix the storms in our own lives by just burrowing down from the wind and the rain. But if we have strong roots we will endure the storm. Do you feel like your faith has strong roots?

GOSPEL REFLECTIONS

By OLL Eighth Grade Students

In Fr. Gary’s homily, he said that we are the presence of Jesus in the world by being his hands, his feet, and eyes. We can also be his voice. Write a journal reflection to give examples of how we can be the pres-ence of Jesus in the world today. I feel one of the best ways to represent Jesus is just by doing small things like holding the door for others, or giving someone a compliment. You can change someone’s day with just a smile. If you want to do something bigger, you could help someone pick up their things if they drop them, or you could talk to someone that you don’t like or don’t hang out with. Try just being nice. It is not that hard to do. Keep rude or hurtful things to yourself because words do hurt people. Even if you don’t like what they say about you, just turn the other cheek and walk away. When I get picked on it makes me feel worthless and ashamed of myself. Doing nice things for others can help change their mood and yours. It will make you feel good about yourself. When I’m feeling down and someone helps me, it makes me feel better about myself and encourages me to do something nice for others. Remember, your words and actions can change the way a person thinks and feels. -Gabrielle There are many ways we can be like Jesus Christ. One of the many ways we can be more like Jesus is by helping others any way we can. Everyone has some sort of struggle and Jesus would want us to offer help if we can. Another way is to take care of God’s creations. The Earth has been very damaged, but if we work together and try to fix the mess, then maybe it will be okay. We should also try and be kinder, even

though it is much harder to be kind than it is to be mean. Jesus wants us to all be treated equally, but that won’t happen with-out everyone’s help. Whenever you think about doing something that could hurt someone, just think about how the other person would react. We should all try to be more like Jesus Christ. Even though it’s hard, the outcome will be worth it! -Claire
