HIGHLIGHTS (2014-2015) The national prominence of the program continues to increase significantly. This year, we had 177 applications. The quality of the applicant pool remains very high. We interviewed a total of 60 applicants. The average GPA and MCAT scores of the interviewees were 3.75 and 33, respectively. We had a total of 11 new students matriculate. Their GPA and MCAT scores were 3.75 and 32.4, respectively. Of particular note, is the extensive undergraduate research experiences that the applicants had. It was clear during the recruitment process that we continue to compete with the best programs in the country. Shanon Weber, incoming first year student, was awarded the annual MUSC Physicians/MSTP scholarship as well as the Suzann Pershing Award. From the Hollings Cancer Center, Nathaniel Jensen and Hyunwoo Kwon received a Abney scholarship. The nine students who were awarded NIH predoctoral fellowships from the training grant are Sagar Bajpai, Daniel Bonthius, Stewart Cox, Hannah Knochelmann, Christopher Mullins, Winston Plunkett, Joshua Smith, Catherine Svetcharnik and Danh Tran. The website is in the process of being redesigned with input from our students. The visiting professor seminar series has been reactivated. The plan is to have one to two speakers during the upcoming year. Congratulations to Jacob Bowers, Danielle Desjardins and Doug Roberts-Wolfe who received Ruth Kirschstein NSRA fellowships. Our success rate for obtaining these NRSA fellowships is approximately twice the national average, which is 30%. Currently, 13 of our students are the recipients of a competitive intramural or extramural individual fellowship. Our new students and their undergraduate institutions are listed below.

Sagar Bajpai University of Maryland Baltimore County Daniel Bonthius Wartburg College Stewart Cox University of Colorado, Boulder Maya Eid American University of Beirut Hannah Knochelmann University of Notre Dame Allison Meadows University of Virginia Christopher Mullins University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Catherine Svetcharnik University of Colorado Ralph Tanios American University of Beirut Shannon Weber Richmond University Melanie Wiley University of Maryland Baltimore County

Joseph Taylor was named as co-recipient of the Distinguished Graduate of the Year Award. He will return in August to present the Liz Chesterman Memorial lecture to the incoming graduate students. Tiffany Baker was chosen as the 2015 Academic Excellence and Achievement in Pathology Award Gold Recipient from the American Society of Clinical Pathology. Craig Kutz was chosen as a Mission Specialist and Chief Medical Officer for NASA Human Exploration Research Analog. His role was to act as the Chief Medical Officer in simulated deep space mission for NASA. The focus was mainly on behavioral health and performance, crew communication, crew autonomy, and human factors of spaceflight. The information gathered through this mission informed NASA scientists and flight surgeons to better understand the stresses and countermeasures necessary for astronauts to visit places such as Mars or an asteroid. The monthly student seminar series, which are organized by the students, continues to be very successful. It is scheduled for the fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. Faculty from our institution presented informal research seminars at each of the meetings. These interactions have resulted in several students choosing the presenters as mentors for research projects. This year, six students who were ready to defend their dissertation presented their research. This provided an excellent venue for them to practice their presentation. It also allowed the other students in the program to learn about their colleague’s research.

Our Translational Medicine Seminar series has been a great success. Each one of our senior students paired with one of our faculty to present a clinical case. This was followed by a research discussion by the faculty member focused on the disease that was presented. The topics and speakers are listed below: 9/8/14 Alton Sutter and Satish Nadig, MD, D.Phil. Towards Operational Tolerance: minimizing systemic side-effects of conventional immunotherapy 9/22/14 Ahmad Mashmoushi and Andrew Goodwin, MD Sepsis, Mending Leaky Vessels 1/12/15 Tiffany Baker and Steven Carroll, MD, PhD Good Things in a Small Package: Cancer Genomics and Therapeutics in Mouse Models of Nervous System Neoplasia 2/16/15 Obaidullah Aseem and Gary Gilkeson, MD Cellular Therapy for Systemic Lupus 3/16/15 Rebecca Knackstedt and Sebastiano Gattoni-Celli, MD & Stephen Savage, MD The Importance of Vitamin D in Prostate Cancer 3/30/15 Joseph Alge and Milos Budisavljevic, MD New Insights into the Pathogenesis of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis 4/20/15 Joseph Taylor and Gregory Sahlem, MD An Interventional Psychiatry Case Study: Using Triple Chronotherapy to Treat Suicidality and Treatment-Resistant Depression The Translational Sciences Clinics have proven to be a very rewarding and successful experience for our students. Both the students and faculty have provided very positive evaluations. During this past year six students; Craig Kutz, Tucker Marrison, Jennifer Scott, Joshua Smith, Ryan Whitaker and Tina Zhang successfully defended their Ph.D. dissertations. This has also been an exciting year for many of our students. David Hartman and Erica Herzig, Abby Washispack and Ryan Southard, and Katelyn Williams and Miguel Valenzula became engaged. Keely and Chris Marshall welcomed baby girl Etta in August, Bryce and Danielle Johnson welcomed baby boy Reid in October and Ken and Katie Noguchi welcomed baby girl Ruby in January.
