HIGHLIGHTS (2016-2017) This year is most notable for the change in leadership for the MSTP. Dr. Nancy DeMore, BMW Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and Professor of Surgery, was named the new program director and Dr. Donald Menick, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was named associate program director. Special thanks goes to Dr. Robin Muise-Helmericks for her years of devoted service to the MSTP as associate program director. Dr. DeMore and Dr. Menick bring a set of complementary skills that will provide outstanding leadership for the program. The national prominence of the program continues to increase significantly. This year, we had 191 applications. The quality of the applicant pool remains very high. We interviewed a total of 39 applicants. The average GPA and MCAT scores of the interviewees were 3.86 and 515, respectively. We had a total of 8 new students matriculate. Their GPA and MCAT scores were 3.88 and 511, respectively. The 8 matriculants had a total of 47 publications and turned down 15 acceptances from other programs. Of particular note, is the extensive undergraduate research experiences that the applicants had. It was clear during the recruitment process that we continue to compete with the best programs in the country. Elizabeth Farris Langley, incoming first year student, was awarded the annual MUSC Physicians/MSTP scholarship. She also received the Suzann Pershing Award. Daniel Wood received the SCE&G Scholarship. From the Hollings Cancer Center, Hyunwoo Tony Kwon received the Abney scholarship for the second year. Sagar Bajpai also received the Abney scholarship. The nine students who were awarded NIH predoctoral fellowships from the training grant are Dimitrios Arhontoulis, David Braak, John Grayson Evans, Jamie Mills, Alexander Oles, Guillermo Rangel Rivera, Matthew Roberts, Victoria Spadafora and Shannon Weber. The visiting professor seminar series has been reactivated. The plan is to have one to two speakers during the upcoming year. Dr. Skip Brass, Director, University of Pennsylvania MSTP, will be visiting in January. Congratulations to Jacob Bowers and Ken Noguchi who received Ruth Kirschstein NSRA fellowships. Our success rate for obtaining the NRSA fellowships continues to be approximately twice the national average, which is 30%. Currently, 8 of our students are the recipients of a competitive intramural or extramural individual fellowship. Our new students and their undergraduate institutions are listed below.
Dimitrios Arhontoulis Drexel University Davis Borucki Boston University Stephen Gadomski University of Scranton Nour Hijazi American University of Beirut Elizabeth Farris Langley College of Charleston Emilie McKinnon Ku Leuven University/MUSC Victoria Spadafora Pennsylvania State University Park

Vivian Chioma was appointed to the MUSC Student Leadership Society. Mohammed Dany was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. The monthly student seminar series, which are organized by the students, continues to be very successful. It is scheduled for the fourth Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. Faculty from our institution presented informal research seminars at each of the meetings. These interactions have resulted in several students choosing the presenters as mentors for research projects. This year, 8 students who were ready to defend their dissertation presented their research. This provided an excellent venue for them to practice their presentation. It also allowed the other students in the program to learn about their colleague’s research.
December 12 Daniel Neitzke December 14 Danielle Lowe April 5 Jacob Bowers April 13 Ali Alawieh May 1 Daniel Herr June 5 Douglas Roberts-Wolfe June 12 Ken Noguchi June 13 Fahmin Basher
Our Translational Medicine Seminar series has been a great success. Each one of our senior students paired with one of our faculty to present a clinical case. This was followed by a research discussion by the faculty member focused on the disease that was presented. The topics and speakers are listed below: January 9 Craig Kutz and Edward Jauch, MD, MS, FAHA “Intracerebral Hemorrhage” February 13 Joshua Smith, Ken Holden, MD & Gisele Matheus, MD
"Neurogenetics and imaging in individuals with Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome"
April 3 Ryan Whitaker and Graham Warren, MD, PhD "Smoking Cessation and Radiation Therapy Response" April 17 Jennifer Scott and DeAnna Frost, MD, PhD
"The Effects of Estradiol on Dermal Fibrosis in Scleroderma"
The Translational Sciences Clinics have proven to be a very rewarding and successful experience for our students. Both the students and faculty have provided very positive evaluations. During this past year 9 students; Ali Alawieh, Fahmin Basher, Jacob Bowers, Daniel Herr, Jamie Mills, Danielle Lowe, Daniel Neitzke, Ken Noguchi, Douglas Roberts-Wolfe successfully defended their Ph.D. dissertations. This has also been an exciting year for many of our students. Ken and Katie Noguchi welcomed baby boy Jaydee on August 20, Doug and Christine Roberts-Wolfe welcomed baby girl Lena in January. Our students continue to garner many honors and awards that you will see listed after their names. Including the incoming class, we currently have 56 students in the program. GOALS FOR 2017-2018
• We will continue to try to identify philanthropic support for the program
• Increase the size and quality of our applicant pool
• Submit a successful competing renewal application for the program in May 2018
• Re-evaluate the MSTP’s activities and programs
