Foyle’d Againif you’re a mystery and history buff like i am, the final episode of Foyle’s War on Masterpiece Mystery! a few years back was bittersweet. For five seasons, i was part of an army of fans who couldn’t get enough of detective Chief superintendent Christopher Foyle’s brilliant and pensive sleuthing, set against the historically accurate backdrop of life in a small town on the south coast of england during World War ii. the series’ conclusion coincided with ve-day, but as they say, every ending is the start of something new.
in this case, it’s this month’s return by popular demand of this favorite Masterpiece Mystery! series, which picks up with Foyle, and england, coming
to grips with grim, post-war life and sinister crimes (see page 10). “Unlike some other detectives who take a while to build a fan base,” says WGBH’s Rebecca Eaton, Masterpiece executive producer, “Foyle was instantly popular. i think it’s due to people’s fascination with this time period, to michael Kitchen and the magic of his acting, and to Anthony Horowitz (Collision, Poirot), who is both a student of history and a brilliant writer.”
the return of Foyle’s War marks the launch of one of Masterpiece Mystery!’s
strongest seasons ever. “there’s so much to look forward to,” rebecca says, including “six by Agatha” (three new Miss Marples and three new Poirots) as well as new episodes of Inspector Lewis and Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh. the season will conclude with a fast-paced, witty 21st-century take on sherlock Holmes. “the stories are very, very loosely based on Conan doyle’s sherlock Holmes,” rebecca says. “the first is A Study in Pink, which is a distant relation of doyle’s A Study in Scarlet. the film’s producers liken themselves to ‘magpies,’ taking shiny bits from all the sherlock Holmes stories and putting them into the series.”
We’re also giving Masterpiece fans new ways to experience the series, including with each other. nearly 2,000 twitter followers are gathering not just in front of their televisions, but also online during the broadcasts to talk about their favorite series at twitter.com/masterpiecepbs. And almost 9,000 Facebook fans are using the social networking site (facebook.com/masterpiecepbs) to discuss all things Masterpiece. And as with all of our major WGBH productions, now you can watch Masterpiece online after the broadcast premiere at wgbh.org, using our new video player.
some things change—new platforms, new ways to share your favorite series—and some things don’t. “it takes great books and top talent to make great drama,” rebecca says. it also takes you. We’re grateful for your generous annual support, which allows us to create and deliver masterpieces, free and accessible to all.

A New ThreatWhen mount st. Helens erupted in 1980, every living thing in the blast zone was buried beneath 300 feet of avalanche debris, covered with steaming mud and, finally, topped with a superheated layer of frothy rock. it seemed as though mount st. Helens might remain a wasteland forever. then, to everyone’s surprise, life began to bloom again. Biologist Charlie Crisafulli has been documenting the dramatic return of plant and animal life to the barren landscape. But he also has tracked a new threat: the mountain is coming back to life. in 2004, a flurry of explosions blasted steam and ash thousands of feet into the air over mount st. Helens. Nova presents a pioneering look at the interplay between biology and geology that may help scientists predict future volcanic eruptions.

Degree of Debtthe business of higher education is booming. it’s a $400 billion industry fueled by taxpayer money. But what are students getting out of the deal? Critics say a worthless degree and a mountain of debt.
investors insist they’re inno-vators, widening access to education. Frontline follows the money and finds out how Wall street and a new breed of for-profit universi-ties are transforming the way we think about college in America.

Whale TalesFor two centuries, American whale oil lit the world, laying the groundwork for a truly global economy. From its stunning rise as an economic force in the 18th century to its precipitous decline in the decades following the Civil War, the whaling industry shrunk the globe by bringing once remote reaches of the
earth into contact as never before—all the while capturing the American imagination. As Americans now see fortunes rise and fall on the global energy and consumer markets, the rapid commoditization of whales and the sharp decline of the whaling industry serve as a stark reminder of the volatility of the global marketplace.

Light My Firethe creative chemistry of four brilliant artists— singer Jim Morrison, drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger and keyboardist Ray Manzarek—made the doors one of America’s most iconic and influential, theatrical and mysterious, thrilling and some-times frightening rock bands. this, the first feature documentary to tell their story, uses only original footage—much of it previously unseen—shot between the group’s formation in 1965 and morrison’s death in 1971. Johnny depp narrates.

Off the MicBy Brian McCreathHost of Classical Music with Brian McCreath, saturdays and sundays, 7am–11am, and The Bach Hour, sundays at 8pm
One of the fascinating aspects of classical music is the way in which a particular work can be both wedded to its time, place and circumstance of creation and yet, simultane-ously, transcend time, place and circumstance to become relevant to the listener’s world. the combinations and progressions of sounds in a piece of music have the ability to touch us
viscerally and emotionally, but understanding the circumstances of the piece’s creation has the power to magnify and heighten those emo-tions. this is especially true for dmitri shostakovich. shostakovich has long been popular in the concert hall, and his status as one of the great composers of the last century is beyond question. Yet, we know little of his life. shostakovich lived and worked in Joseph stalin’s soviet Union, in which ambiguity of expression was a survival skill. What we know about shostakovich’s motivations, feel-ings and goals within his art remain shrouded because he shrouded them himself. For a person with the kaleidoscopic imagination and creativity of shostakovich, the cognitive dissonance must have been excruciating. When we really open our ears and minds to his music, it presents us with an enigmatic psychological landscape, one that, from our 21st century American perspective, is hardly imaginable. i hope you’ll carve out some time to cross into shostakovich’s world, where the insidious power of the soviet state collided with the drive for honest expression by one of its great artistic voices, and listen to how that legacy has been passed from father to son to grandson (see Shostakovich Times Three, facing page).
