Roads of Arabia: Archaeology and History of the Kingdom of Saudi ArabiaThrough July 6 | Galleries L13–15

Roads of Arabia is an unprecedented assembly of more than 200 recently excavated objects, not seen outside of Saudi Arabia until 2010. Representing more than 7,000 years of largely unknown cultural history of the Arabian Peninsula, the exhibition examines the impact of ancient trade routes that carried precious frankincense and myrrh and the Islamic pilgrimage routes that guided the faithful to Mecca and Medina.

Roads of Arabia: Archaeology and History of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is organized by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in association with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Campers will make a field trip to Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, located one block from the Nelson-Atkins.

Camp Art in Action Ages 6–12 (Students must be entering 1st grade in the fall to enroll.)

“Camp out” this summer at the Nelson-Atkins! Participate in art classes, taught by Ford Learning Center instructors, make new friends and have fun. Learning activities led by camp counselors. Students will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes view of the museum world through visits with museum staff who work with art on a daily basis.

Travel back in time to see animals in sculptures from thousands of years ago in the exhibition Roads of Arabia and form your own three-dimensional animal in clay. Participants will glaze and leave their animals to be fired. Pieces will be ready for pick-up beginning July 19.

FLoWer series June is a beautiful month for flowers. Explore them in several ways in this series of classes taught by Megan Wyeth.

The Flower in Photography6:30–8 p.m. | Friday, June 69 a.m.–3 p.m. | Saturday, June 7$80

Explore the process of photographing flowers. Creativity in approach, techniques, natural lighting, composition, backgrounds and lenses will be discussed. Class meets at the Nelson-Atkins on Friday evening. Saturday class begins at the Kauffman Gardens, located one block south, returning to the museum in the afternoon.

Basic Botanical Illustration6:30–8:30 p.m. | Thursdays, June 5–26 $120

Learn to create detailed drawings of flowers and plants working with graphite pencil. We will discuss how careful observation, lighting and basic perspective can make your drawings come alive.

Pressing Botanicals10 a.m.–Noon | Saturdays, June 14 & 28$100

Please join us as we learn how to press botanicals and make creative greeting cards. All supplies are provided, including a 6” x 9” press you will keep. Just BYOT—bring your own tweezers!
