Tis the season to be jolly. Sigh, and hereI am, starting it off, sick as a dog. So,

please forgive me if my words comeacross as a bit incoherent. Just try to

descramble my words in your headand you’ll get the gist of it. You know,

that’s all reading is—like assimilatingbinary code. Let’s say your mind is like a

computer and your fists are like steel;well, code enters your CPU (Central Processing Unit—your brain),gets decompiled & decoded and then processed. Now you getto see your fist at work combating the enemy—that evil virus inyour head that’s trying to take over, and beating it to a pulp, forinstance. That’s what reading is! It’s no small wonder your emailbox gets filled with so many hoaxes—lies, propaganda, fromdeceptive campaigns meant to reprogram your way ofthinking, and to get you to forward that message as gospel toall your friends. So, please, accept my code as a patch—yes, like a Windows Update—to help protect your system againstany new upcoming attacks against your operating system.

You see, basically, what the demented organizations runninghoax propaganda campaigns are trying to do is remove thepresent operating system in your head and replace it withanother. More profoundly, replace your ability to formulaterational responses based on truth, with an ability to formulateirrational responses based on deception—and to believe in thelie!—because the truth just wasn’t good enough for you. All thisso that you may process thoughts differently and become moresusceptible to believing more lies, because you refused tobelieve in the truth and would rather believe in lies (if that’s thecase, of course). Hence, entire cultures get rewritten on anational level, and an entire civilization suddenly finds itself onthe brink of total collapse—because they would rather believein a lie than in the truth. And all because people failed to realizethe power in their thinking! My friend, YOU have the power overyour own thoughts! “I think; therefore I am.”—Rene Descartes.

Rene Descartes was no fool, my friend! Isn’t it amazing that therehave been so many great men and women from way back in theday throughout human history, who have all realized the samething, and who have all conveyed their wisdom in each their ownunique ways with words?—so that the rest of us may help prolongthe existence of humanity! Rene Descartes also said that “It is notenough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well.”

My wife and 5 children continually cycle through every illnesscirculating the gene pool. But not me—I rarely catch anyillness. My immune system is strong; though not sure whathappened this time. Stress obviously achieved victory overme. Stress weakens the immune system. My wife recentlyended up in the ER from a major panic attack that purportedheart attack and/or stroke symptoms. A few days later, I askedher, “Julia, when’s the last time you had a good hearty laugh?”She responded that she laughs all the time—but I meant agood hearty laugh, the kind that reaches deep to the core. Itold her she needs to lighten up and laugh more, like me, tothe bone! We’re two different people. My wife who’s born &bred North Country girl (from Canada of all places) and I fromTexas (here like a rattle snake in the snow) are two entirelydifferent people. Where I’m weak, she’s strong; and vice versa.Yet, it’s all in the attitude. In a well-known quote aboutattitude, Charles R. Swindoll said “I am convinced that life is10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” Sowork on your attitude and you will affect a change in thecommunity. Quantum mechanics mandates that change!

There are many in town whose genuine love of living often bringsme to tears in laughter, like Bert Haverstock (Wal-Mart greeter). He’s full of life. Those Wal-Mart greeters have the attitudes &demeanors of ambassadors. As soon as you enter, you’re alreadyfeeling good about being there. You can’t help but like them!

Laughter is a great anti-virus application & defrag for your system. But be forewarned: if you’re laughing at others, ensure it is solelyas a reflection of yourself in their mirror image. Because I seriouslydoubt that laughing and snickering at people one doesn’tunderstand counts for anything positive. There’s just too muchnegative energy associated with it. This is the kind of laughter thatmakes you more susceptible to catching the kind of virus that canwipe your entire operating system clean and open for a new one.Arrogance & Hatred works solely to promote self-destruction.

To all my Jewish friends and readers, I wish you aHappy Hanukkah. Since I’m not Jewish, it would of

course be inappropriate for me to represent yourfaith in my writings. Thus, with that respect, I will

not attempt it. I will, however, salute you in yourendeavors towards achieving peace in Israel and the

world over as you have been continually under attack. And I want to express that as a Christian it is imperative

for me to Love you as God’s people–which I do!–andthat I can only hope to be found worthy of being adopted by your Father asHis own and not as the despicable inherent nature of my very being. Moreover,my faith stipulates that, "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever cursesyou I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."–Genesis12:1-3 (NIV). This is referring to YOU, the children of Abraham. Hence, it isincumbent upon me to bless you, not trash you, disregard, nor dismiss you. Ifyou are reading this, I am in your presence, and it is in this respect that I nowget into my own Faith, representing it from my own perspective andunderstanding, continuing with a book that we both share...

Satan had told Eve, “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyeswill be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”—Genesis3:5 (NIV). Then, after Adam & Eve ate from the Tree of the knowledge of goodand evil, God said that, “The man has now become like one of us, knowinggood and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take alsofrom the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”—Genesis 3:22 (NIV).

It’s a good thing God removed that tree from our reach, I tell you what!Imagine what this world would be like if God had allowed people to eat fromthe Tree of Life and gain the ability to keep their flesh alive here on earthforever. Well, the Tree of Life would’ve ultimately become the sole propertyof a very powerful and self-righteous global totalitarian, under the directcontrol of a very wicked few. Oh…you know how people are. We areextremely selfish & self-righteous individuals, in varying degrees of course, depending on one’s moral compass, maturity level therewith, wisdom andunderstanding therein. It’s in our nature to be selfish & self-righteous, andthis is what makes us so judgmental of others. That’s just part of the side-effects from having eaten from the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Why else would God have removed access to the Tree of Life?

You see, it is from our selfish & self-righteous nature that is at the root ofevery single problem people have in their interactions with one another.Americans are always complaining that immigrants come to our nationbut do not assimilate; that they don’t leave their cultures behind andintegrate into the American culture. Yet, how often do Americans welcomeimmigrants into our culture and way of life—much less, go out of theirway to make them feel at home? Rarely. We just keep them at a safedistance; pretending they’re not even there. Still, I get it. Hey, I’m fromTexas and I have experienced extreme difficulty assimilating here inMassena, New York—which is, HELLO, in the very same nation as Texas.

In fact, I stopped wearing a cowboy hat over a year ago, and exchanged itfor an Andy Cap to help me assimilate. You see, there was just somethingvery difficult for citizens here to accept about me wearing a cowboy hat.

!,*"###  /;;7>>>$/,(::,5(,>:*64

I’d oftentimes catch mean remarks directed at me but spoken to others whenwearing my cowboy hat. Yes, it would get annoying at times for me anAmerican citizen to be regarded as some freak foreign impersonation. Wow.So, I even grew out some facial hair for a Northern look that goes quite wellwith my cap, in hopes that people wouldn’t freak out on my darker skin tone. The facial hair suits me well. In fact, it’s actually warmed up a reception fromothers here—a lot. Still, aside from those in Massena who know me personallyand/or are readers of the Massena News who recognize me as a friend of thecommunity, there are not many local born & bred citizens here who wouldallow me to feel assimilated. No, no—I do not believe they are racists.

Hey, I’m from the South, I know racism when it’s around. What’s going onhere would take a book to illustrate; so, let’s just leave it at that. Nonetheless, with that being said, no one can assimilate into a culture without beingwelcomed into it. And that is a problem in America—more so here inMassena than anywhere else in the nation I have ever been, which is in atleast half of these 50 states, and many towns and cities therein. Believe me,I can go through all the Southern States in this Andy Cap and receive a verywell reception from strangers, I tell you what! But here, it seems everyone’sin a clique. The only difference between cliques and gangs is the degree ofphysical violence communicated—“violence”, being the operative word here.

Humanity is divided into countless different segments, which are furtherdivided into countless more. Even the church is so divided that most peopledon’t want anything to do with it. If we hope to grow as a nation, we need tobe more united. And if we hope to grow here in Massena as a community, wetoo need to be more united. Citizens must break away from their silly littlecliques and start acting like adults. There’s a lot more important things at stakehere in the community than what one thinks others are going to think of them!

Furthermore, you need to love yourself! Jesus Christ wasn’t killed on the crossby the Jews or the Romans. He was killed on the cross by your sins (at thehands of others), and he died up there to free you from those sins! He wasborn to die for your sins and underwent the brutal suffering willingly, so thatyou may be free to love yourself, in hopes that you can love others as well.(Loving oneself and idolizing oneself are two entirely different things, by theway—so let’s be clear here.) You know, the meanest, most divisive people inthe world, are the ones who love themselves the least—if at all. Let thatresonate with you. And let this resonate with you…

You need to make a conscious effort to love your spouse, love your family, love your home, and love Massena. If I can love Massena, you certainly cantoo! I make a conscious effort every day to love this town—and nothing, noone, is ever going to get in the way of that…until I am gone. Now why doyou have to make a conscious effort?—so that you don’t forget!

Be kind to everyone you encounter—not just towards those in your littleclique. May you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah (whateverthe case may be)! God bless you! God bless your family! God bless Massena! And God bless the United States of America!

“Today, 12.5 million children are overweight in theUnited States—more than 17 percent. Overweightchildren are at greater risk for many serious healthproblems.”--U.S. Department of Health & HumanServices Office of the Surgeon General

"That's DISGUSTING!"Parents hear that far too often at the dinertable. It seems, kids just look at food and

before they even taste it, decide not to eat it.

It's hard enough to ensure our picky eaters are getting a balanceddiet, but this time of year seems to make it even more difficult.

Most parents are caught in a whirlwind of basketball games, hockey practices, figure skating and wrestling, then there is theholiday shopping to be done and catching up from theThanksgiving break just in time to take off at Christmas. Most ofus find ourselves at McDonald's more often than planned andletting our kids fill up on greasy, salty and sugary foods. So whatshould a concerned parent do?

Meal planning is the first step in helping your family maintain abalanced and nutritional diet. Look over your week's schedule andplan ahead. If you know you will be pushed for time on a particularevening, prepare a quick meal ahead of time that takes little preptime, or that can be taken on the go. Planning your meals out inadvance will also give your family heads up on what will be served.

Kids get a monthly list from school on what will be served forbreakfast and lunch, and they are given standard alternatives.Instituting something similar at home will help those meal-timecomplaints, and bring more harmony to your time together.

Experts say that completely controlling what your child eats anddoes not eat is not the answer. Children need to and should"want" to eat wholesome foods and develop internal controlsover how much to eat. To help your child make healthy food

choices on their own, set a good example. Expect your child to refusesome of the foods you offer.

But act more like a coach than a dictator. Parents should providehealthy food choices and encourage kids to eat new foods. Makeeating a fun experience. It's not uncommon for foods to be introducedup to 20 times before a child tries it for the first time, so be patient.

Another way to teach your children about nutrition is joining them insome research. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)has lots of kid-friendly information available online, including games, posters and coloring pages.

Getting your kids involved will help empower them and they will wantto make good choices.

Encouraging your children to stay active will also benefit their healthand well being. The White House has instituted a nationwidecampaign, Let's Move!, to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity byproviding schools, parents, and communities with tools to help kids beactive, eat better, and get healthy. Information about the Let's Move!campaign can be found online at www.letsmove.gov.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of St Lawrence County is offeringan education series for parents in Massena starting in January. HealthyChildren, Healthy Families helps parents and caregivers to offer healthysnacks and meals to their children while role modeling positive, healthyhabits. There is also a focus on how specific parenting skills can helpto make meal times happier, make children feel good aboutthemselves, and develop family routines. The seminar will be heldupstairs at the New Testament Church (265 Andrews Street,Massena) every third Monday beginning January 2012.

Soy for some is beneficial while others mayfind they need to avoid it. It is one of the foodsthat some may have an intolerance to. If youeat soy and you feel bloated, tired, or have afair amount of flatulence, you may want toconsider taking it out of your diet for amonth. Drink a fair amount of water to cleanall systems of the body. After one month

introduce soy back in to the diet and see how your body responds. If you experience the same symptoms of flatulence, bloating andfeeling tired you may have intolerance to soy.

There are many benefits to soy. It is a good source of the 8 essential aminoacids that we need in our diet, as well as a good source of plant baseprotein. Soy also has the ability to block hormone receptor cites, whichis beneficial to those with too much testerone or other hormones. Withhair loss being one of the signs of a hormonal inbalance, soy has the abilityto help with hormones and provide the protein for healthy hair.

Soy comes in many forms, milk, tofu, capsule, yogurt or powderwhich can be made into a shake.

Have you ever fired a gun, my dear reader? (Military friends, calm down aboutme referring to a weapon as a gun, please! Writing for civilians

here). There’s a sense of power one feels when handling aweapon. I’ve fired all sorts of weapons, back in theday—Everything! I even fired a tank once—awesome.

As a strapping young commando, I had to be proficientat all sorts of instruments of war one might encounter

on the battlefield, and be prepared to jump in and go withit, tanks, helicopters, anti-aircraft guns, you name it,

including demolitions & explosives.

I recall, back then, a friend telling me about a certain interview heunderwent, in which he was handed a pistol and asked to hold it, feel it,and visualize himself taking down a target. He was then asked, “If you shotand killed someone with this, what’s the first thing you would feel?” Myfriend said to me that he had answered, “Recoil.” I won’t say anything moreon that other than to exemplify the emotional detachment he had fromthe tools of his trade. And I have no idea where he’s at now, but he’sprobably no longer with us. That’s a certain segment of the military, whereinstruments of war belong—not here in the civilian sector!

Out here there are only 3 kinds of people carrying guns: Law enforcement, hunters, and cowards. If you are carrying a gun, you need to ask yourself:which one are you? And if you’re not one of those first two, you haveabsolutely no business whatsoever holding a firearm, and you’re going toend up doing something really stupid with it that you’re going to regretthe rest of your life—especially if you end up spending it in a living hellbehind bars with myriad other cowards thriving on your fear and the powerthey feel in numbers and being bigger than you. So put away your gunsand get something else that makes you feel powerful. Motorcycles areawesome—the power in that throttle!—but that’ll probably get you killedtoo. So, work on your self-esteem instead, and avoid people who like tobelittle you. And one last thing, before you go do something stupid, comeinto my office and talk to me. I don’t care if you’re packing—I’m not afraid.Just don’t point it at me! No, no, I’m not a therapist, but if you need someoneto talk to asap, and you see me in my office writing, drop in. I know whatit’s like to be scared, and to feel like you’re trapped in a corner—so trappedthat you just can’t see any way out. But there’s always a way out. Justbecause you can’t see something, doesn’t mean it’s not there! A coward seesfatality and throws in the rag to avoid taking the beating. A worse cowardwould get out of the ring and re-enter it with a gun—but we never see that, because there are no cowards who get in the ring to fight, to begin with! You see, cowards do not particularly care for challenge or confrontation.

Enough of that. This article is in regards to the recent Virginia Tech shooting, and all the recent shootings that have been occurring everywhere, evenhere in Massena. What is going on these days? We live in a nation wherethere is so much economic turmoil and uncertainty. People are continuallyworrying how everything is going to turn out. Many get so stressed out,

  ",*"###  /;;7>>>$/,(::,5(,>:*64

and allow pressures to break them. These are frightening times, I know it! Ohboo hoo hoo…you want to know what frightening times are? Think about allthose brave men and women who went up against the massive and far moresuperior military regime of the Third Reich. You think they were crying like littleschool girls? No. Hell no! They laid down their lives for us! It is incumbent uponus all to earn the sacrifices they made so that we could live free. So stopwhining, because you are free! Deal with it. Find a solution. Eat ramen noodlesoup every day if you have to! Furthermore, you are far better off in poverty inthis nation than just about any other nation on the planet—except for maybeCanada. Unambitious, lazy deadbeats there can be on welfare indefinitely. (Isit of no small wonder there’s not much gun violence there?) Here, in the UnitedStates of America, freedom isn’t free. People paid for it with their blood, andthe rest of us have to earn it daily by being the best citizen we possibly canwith whatever options are available to us to make the best of our lives. If that’sthe best you can do for now, enjoy it and be happy. Struggle is awesome, reminds you that you’re alive and still in the ring fighting.

Now all those who glamorize the thug life and prison, hopefully theirmommies will send them money to buy some ramen noodle soup whilethey’re locked up behind bars for having thrown away their life. They think itis hard now?—Good luck when they get back out! I wish they would read thismessage, maybe get some sense into them. We all need to reach out to thembefore they hurt themselves or others.

At age 16, in San Antonio, Texas, I was at a Battle of Flowers Parade whensuddenly gunfire erupted. A Vietnam veteran, in a parked motor home with asmall arsenal of weapons and gas mask, opened fire on the crowd, shootingover 150 (if I recall correctly) and killing several (I don’t remember how many).I don’t have time now to get complete accurate data, and much of what I seeon the internet, I know is incorrect, so going by recollection here…I recallmyriad people were hysterical running away, trampling over one another, tripping and falling, crawling, and many wounded were on the groundbleeding and squabbling to get out of the line of fire. One after another, peoplewere shot and going down. I could feel the bullets zapping by me, as I rancloser towards the motor home, dashing from anything and everything that Icould take cover behind, as I tried to get closer to the action. From less than50 meters away, I watched as SWAT swarmed upon his motor home like flieson you know what, rappelling atop it, and being shot off it from inside rightthrough the ceiling. Smoke grenades were thrown. Tear gas canisters throwninto his windows. But he had a gas mask, so it didn’t matter; he kept firing awaylike a mad man. This incident went on for around 90 minutes, as I watched inawe and wondered what could possibly possess him to be doing this. It wasinsane! Well, finally it was all over and they brought his body out. At this point,I was not even 25 meters away, as I seen him lay there with a huge chunk ofhis head blown off. That wasn’t very bright, I thought. Was that his endgame? What a loser! (Shaking my head.) Sigh…there are no words for it.

That was in 1979. Funny how some things never change. Massena, keep youreyes open, be wise as serpents, and be kind to everyone.

Seasonal sense:Using scent, sightand sound tostimulate holidayspirits

(ARA) - From baking cookies with

loved ones to caroling through

the neighborhood or celebrating

with family and friends, fond

memories of holiday traditions

abound. Each year, scents, sights

and sounds promote the season's

spirit - continuing long-standing

traditions and creating new

memories.

Here are some ideas for

stimulating your senses and

evoking the warmth of the

holidays in your home:

Savoring seasonal scents

Home fragrances create a warm,

inviting environment during the

holidays and all year-round. A whiff of

a familiar scent often calls to mind

memories of holidays past. The scent

of cinnamon and vanilla conjures

thoughts of freshly baked cinnamon

rolls on Christmas morning, while a

blend of evergreens, cedar, and musk

reminds many of Christmas tree

hunting in the woods.

One of the safest ways to recreate

holiday memories is with scented,

wickless candles. With no wick and

no flame, there's no worry or mess.

After selecting a favorite seasonal

fragrance, it's easy to place a cube or

two of the scented wax into a

decorative, ceramic candle warmer.

Just one whiff and you are on your

way down memory lane.

"A festive, welcoming atmosphere

stimulates our senses and reminds

us of holidays past as we celebrate

with our family and friends," says

Heidi Thompson, president and co-

owner of Scentsy, a leader in home

fragrance. "A home filled with classic

holiday scents not only evokes

memories but inspires new seasonal

traditions for young families."

Behold the sights

Twinkling lights fill the indoor and

outdoor landscape during the

holidays. To capture the spirit of the

season and add a shimmering glow

to any room, consider a simple string

or two of miniature lights strung

along a mantel or displaying a

holiday-themed wickless candle.

From snowmen to Santa, there are

festive designs in all shapes and sizes

to complement any decor.

Sounds of the season

The sounds of the season create

happy holiday memories. Adding

traditional tunes from Bing Crosby

or modern interpretations from

Harry Connick, Jr. can set the mood

as you decorate your home,

entertain dinner guests or simply

escape the hustle and bustle of the

season. Music creates a cheerful

atmosphere and often encourages

listeners to sing along.

Enjoying the scents, sights and

sounds of the season is simple. To

learn more about how to fill your

home with festive fragrances and

decorate with wickless candles, visit

postedontheirprofilestofindoutwheretheylived, whattheyownedandwhentheywerenotat home". How about that! According toanother article, 92% of the people sharingpersonalinformationonFacebookdonotreallyknowwhotheyaresharingitwith.

Toomuchinformationcanalsoleadtoidentitytheft. Someonewhopostseverythingabouthimself,age,marriedornot,kidsandother--and I am guilty of this myself -- is litteralycracking the door open to the possibility ofidentitytheft.

But it goes even beyond what you couldimagine.Howaboutthisone?Peopleusingfacebookandothersocialmedias, aswellascellphones, tofindpicturesofkeysandhavingdoublesof the keysmade from that picture.Think that's far fetched? Think again! Aprogramcalled“Skneakey”doesjustthat!

Theinternetisafunplaceforadultstoplay,butifnotcautious,itcanbecomeanightmare.Sothisholidayseason,youcanbetthatmystatusupdatewillread"Julia,athomechilling",evenifI’mnot!.
