Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners, We wish you all a very Blessed and Holy New Year and Feast of the Epiphany. On this day Christ revealed Himself not only to His own people Israel, but to the entire Gentile world including you and I. The Three Kings represent all of us throughout the entire world. Christ did not come to be the Messiah only for His own people but He came to be the Savior for all. This is the meaning of the word Epiphany. It means Manifestation or showing. God showed Himself as a humble new born Babe to all of us, the word Incarnate made Flesh, so “Come Let Us Adore Him.” Christ manifested Himself two thousand years ago as a Man among us. But more importantly, He continues to manifest Himself among us each and every day in Holy Mass, where He again becomes Flesh in the Holy Eucharist. “O Come Let Us Adore Him”. Many people in His own day did not recognize Him as the Messiah or God. Many today, do not recognize Him in the Holy Eucharist as Messiah or God. This is a sad reality of our day. So many Catholics and non-Catholics refuse to believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. And yet He is truly present there in every Tabernacle in every Catholic Church here and throughout the world. Many will say if, “I don’t see it I can’t believe in it.” I would say to them, “When was the last time you saw gravity?” And yet we know that it exists. Or when was the last time you saw oxygen and yet we breathe it every day, therefore we know it exists. Jesus hid Himself as King of the Universe as a small baby in Bethlehem. He hides Himself now as King of the Universe, as a small Host in the Tabernacle so that we like the Three Kings can receive Him with Joy and Adore Him. This is why it is so important for us to receive our Blessed Lord worthily. Holy Communion is such a precious gift to each and every one of us. Jesus wishes to give Himself entirely to our heart and soul, yet we have to be prepared to receive Him worthily, so that it may be a true Communion with our God. What does it mean to receive worthily? First and foremost we must be Catholic. Secondly we must be free of grave or mortal sin. To receive Holy Communion, in the state of grave or mortal sin does not help us but rather hurts us and offends Almighty God. Therefore, if we are conscious of any grave or mortal sin, it is better not to receive Holy Communion but rather to go to Confession first so that we can cleanse our souls and truly receive our Blessed Lord worthily after confession. The Three Kings travelled a great distance to worship our Blessed Lord, we have only to go a few blocks or miles to worship our Blessed Lord. They were rewarded for receiving Him worthily, so too will we be rewarded for receiving Him worthily in Holy Communion. Then He will manifest in our souls as He manifested to them that He is truly our God and Messiah. “O Come Let Us Adore Him”. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Harrigan Pastor

Your donations of canned goods, money, & your time made it possible for Christian Care to provide, in the name of Mary Star, Thanksgiving & Christmas food for over 300 families. A special thank you to the "angels" who generously donated turkeys, pies, & stuffing. This special time of year was made brighter for so many of our harbor area neighbors by your kindness!

Thinking about the year ahead, many of us make resolutions and look for “new” all around us. What if this year we look at what we already have, but through a lens of 20/20 vision? What is totally clear, and what do we need to change focus? The Feast of the Epiphany reminds us to look for Jesus and the light he shines on us all. Do we see God and his many graces in all that we do? We are all called to shine with the talents we were given and to share His light. Using your light to help someone else shine does not make your light dim, it creates a bigger, beautiful light for everyone.

At MSSE we are focused on our relationship with God and how we serve Him each day with the work that we do in our classrooms and community. We provide opportunities for our students to demonstrate what they have learned in the classroom and to show their Catholic faith, while building their relationship with God and their community.

Continuing to focus on maintaining a safe and encouraging learning environment for all, allows us to provide a rigorous academic curriculum that challenges students at their level and encourages them to reach their potential. The winter sports season is upon us and both our boys and girls basketball teams from grades 4-8 have been practicing over break to be ready for their games. Our cheer team has set their sights on competition and have been working hard to perfect their routine, cheers, flips, stunts and all! The vision we share could not become reality without support from our parish community. We hope that you will attend our annual Casino Night Gala. This year the theme is 70’s Disco and is sure to be fun “to The Max”! Please join us for an evening of dinner, drinks, raffles and Vegas style casino play. Tickets are available through the School Office 310-831-0875 or online https:/www.marystarelementary.com/apps/form/CasinoNight . We welcome the New Year and our New Families with new energy and ideas, all while maintaining 2020 focus. We continue our efforts with joy in our hearts, knowing that even in the smallest, ordinary, daily events in our lives, we have the opportunity to do them with love and in doing so, give Glory to God. May we all shine bright for Him this year.

God Bless, Mr. Cordero Father Benedict Father Patrick Principal Rector Chaplain

As we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, we kneel with the Magi and adore the newborn king. The search of the Wise Men from the east begins with a sign in the skies

and the wisdom of pagan astrology; it ends with a Child to whom they are led by both the star and the light of the Hebrew Scripture.

Every human life is a journey in which every mo-ment, every step is a new revelation of God’s pres-ence. In their journey to find the Christ, the Magi beheld the love of God in their midst (a love that the self-absorbed Herod could not see). So also our lives are journeys of discovering and encountering Em-manuel – God with us – in our day-to-day experi-ences of forgiveness, generosity, and compassion. Once the Magi had adored the new-born child their lives were changed and they could not go back to their old ways – a whole new life lay ahead. They were to be a “light to the nations” in proclaiming the birth of Jesus. We, too, having encountered the Child Jesus are challenged to leave our old ways and to take a new path in the coming year. The light of our faith may seem fragile; it grows in strength as it is shared. Let’s keep it burning brightly by doing the ordinary actions of our day with love.

ADULT CONFIRMATION classes will begin on TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2020 from 7:00 -8:30 pm in Room 111 in the Religious Education Building. Register now to reserve your place. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Monday, March 23, 2020 at 6:00 pm at Mary Star of the Sea church. RECYCLING: Thank you to all who help us to recycle so that we can purchase resources for the children.

If you need further information on any of the above programs please call Sister Mary or Jamie at

What is child sex trafficking? Child sex trafficking occurs when a minor is involved in a commercial sex act where sex is traded for money, food, shelter, drugs or anything else of value. Perpetrators of sex trafficking often target children believing their age makes them easier to manipulate and control. This crime is occurring in all types of communities throughout the U.S. and traffickers are making an alarming profit while victims endure abuse and violence. One of the most important things you can do to protect your child is to create an environment in which he or she feels comfortable talking with you as a trusted adult. For more information please visit, http://www.missingkids.com/theissues/trafficking.
