Silent Reflection I sat on the dock around 6:00 am, wearing shorts, flip-flops, and a t-shirt. Then

I pulled my Bible from my drawstring backpack, and read from the Psalms. Every morning of my silent

retreat to Belize began with an

incredible sunrise, reading, and a prayer. “I know each day is a

gift Lord. What do You have in store for me on this one? Your

will, not mine.” Take time and

spend it with God - every day. I try to instill this habit by

example, and through teaching at The Cross on Wednesday

evenings. Our students are

encouraged to pray and read their Bibles daily, at least 3-5

minutes. This year we are focusing on Luke. A comfortable chair with ample light, in the morning or evening is ideal.

A silent retreat offers extended periods of focus time with God; an experience

that has become an annual, valuable practice for me. The first year I agreed to go on a 48-hour silent retreat, I was terribly anxious! It was a requirement each

spring in seminary at The Master’s Institute, where I spent most of my Thursdays and Fridays. I thought I might go crazy not able to talk with others, or visit with

new friends! Besides, I didn’t think I made very good company for myself.

Fortunately, I was never really on my own.

Time with the Lord is not alone. I’ve learned to pray ahead of time, and ask

others to pray for me as well. I’ve also come to a clearer understanding that God

truly wants this time with each of us, and is faithful to use it for our good. Writing in a journal allows for reflection and processing over the thoughts and

information God tends to bring to the forefront, when we allow our focus to rest on Him. In past years I’ve spent time in St. Francis Minnesota, at Pacem in

Terrace for silent retreat. I would encourage any believer to call and plan to

spend a couple nights. Go to their website and explore, pray about it, ask questions, and plan a meeting with the Lord - http://www.paceminterris.org. I

have always entered my time of retreat with my plan. However, I find that God has his own plan for me; which is far better than mine.

PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION 5

Are there steps to

receiving Salvation?

What we need to understand is that salvation is something that

God does in the heart of a

person. We cannot move toward God or take steps toward

him unless the Holy Spirit first changes our heart through the

receiving of the good news of Jesus.

If a person is at a point of honestly saying out loud that they want to “receive Christ” (as many denominations say), that person’s heart

has already been changed. In Ephesians 2, Paul talks about how we are dead in sin. By definition, something that is dead cannot bring

itself to life. That is why God sent Jesus - To give us new life.

There is a helpful reminder prayer to reconfirm that which God has done in our hearts and it follows A-B-C. This idea is something we

should do every morning, according to Luther.

A is ADMIT you're a sinner, that you need Christ as your savior: B is BELIEVE that Jesus is who he said he is (the Savior) and did what he

said he did (die and rise for you): C is CONFESS to the Lord and

admit to yourself that you are desiring and committing to living as a child of God.

Have questions about faith, life, or our church? Send them in to Lisa at [email protected] and your question will be answered by one of the pastors, and may be featured in an upcoming newsletter edition! You may choose to remain anonymous.

Faith Statement By Jack Erickson - 2016 Confirmation Class Going to Trinity Academy since preschool I have always been surrounded by faith. My friends,

my teachers, and especially my parents have

poured their beliefs into me. I have always accepted Jesus as my savior, and God as my

father. That has never been a question to me. Today I get to proclaim this faith as my own.

My verse is Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid.

This verse to me means that God is all powerful,

nothing happens that isn't meant for our good. It also means that God provides for my every

need.

I have never been at another school besides Trinity, so when I graduate this spring it will be

a big change for me. I have learned so much

from studying the bible from Genesis to Revelation with Mr. Stage and Pastor Tim. We

didn't just read over the books, we studied the books in depth page by page and verse by

verse. Going from a class of 16 to a class of 400 some will be a big change. For the first time not

everyone will agree with my faith. One thing I

know is that Trinity has solidified who I am as a person. I won’t change because of what my

friends or teachers think. I am forever thankful for Trinity Academy and what it’s

done for me in my journey with

God. I would also like to thank my parents for sending me to Trinity,

and for all of the hours of volunteer work that they have put in.

My parents are my biggest role

models and are the biggest reason that I am proclaiming Jesus as my

savior and God as my father. My

father is always willing to help around school without recognition;

his selflessness is something that I want to live up to. My mother

teachers Junior Enrichment on her free time, and kids aren't always

little angels. Her patience and

kindness is something I strive to live up to. From this day forward

that is how I'm going to live my life for Jesus; with patience, kindness,

and selflessness.

Confirmation 2016 Confirmation is the process of a student understanding God’s love in Christ as

experienced in their baptism. Part of our process at Trinity is to have the students verbally proclaim their faith. This is a wonderful stepping stone in their faith

development. Below: 2016 Confirmation Class

INSPIRATIONAL WORSHIP 6

New Sermon Series Sometimes the Christian life gets difficult -- especially when we are in situations where we are faced with the decision to trust God rather than others or our own intuition. In the series “Strength Along The Way”, we learn from three Old Testament people that God gives strength in his timing and in his way.

Joyful Noise 2016 presented by

Ministry Partner Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities will be June 3 and 4 at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Tickets are available for Friday, but Saturday has sold out. Call 651.631.5151 to order tickets by phone. Don’t wait! Ticket prices are higher at the door.

New Members We are blessed to have received the following new members into our church family in April:

Krista Baum & Dan Bergman Sheila Willox, daughter Payton Jeremy Trieb & Alexandria Johnson, daughter Grace Kyle & Karen Alexander, daughters, Claire and Carly Ryan & Lisa Goulette, son Richy, daughters Johanna, and Abigail

7 FOUNDATIONAL FAITH Family VBS 2016 Sunday July 31 - Thursday August 4

Downtown Trinity Campus 5:30pm -8:00pm

Join us at the amazing Son Spark

Labs, where children will explore God's life-changing plan for them as

they find out the answers to life's most important questions. They

will discover that God loves them,

and through Jesus they can be members of God's family, and personally experience God’s plan for each of us. Get

ready for a blast!

Your family evening will begin at 5:30 pm in the Downtown gym with dinner and fellowship. Then head on up to the

sanctuary for our VBS opening songs and worship at 6:00. Next, students will divide into their classroom rotations to

continue their activities with TruthLab Bible Stories, MasterMind Crafts, Momentum Games, and more! Parents,

you are invited to stay in the sanctuary for your own, pastor-

led Bible study; after which, you will rejoin your child for the closing activities.

Buffet style dinner will be provided (Monday-Thursday

evening) and the nursery will be available for all evenings. Bring the whole family for a great week of discovering God’s

plan! Registration will begin Sunday, May 1st.

Staff Person of the Month Each month in the Trinity newsletter we highlight a staff member that works at either site for

Trinity. This is a great way for the congregation to get to know us a little better. This month we are highlighting staff member Lisa Mae Opel. 1) Give a brief description of your position at Trinity.

I am one of the Administrative Assistants at the Downtown Church Campus. I’m responsible for publications such as the bulletins, newsletters, and putting together other special mailings. I am

support for the church and school staff, and members of Trinity. I enjoy being a resource for visitors and inquiring guests.

2) What are the joys of your position/job?

I love the fact that I get to work in an environment that encourages praying and seeking guidance through God. I feel blessed to be able to work with a wonderful group of volunteers that clearly love their church, and excel in their mission

of doing God’s work where-ever they can. It’s fun to watch the projects from start to finish, and sometimes be a part of it behind the scenes. My joy is also that I have met some very wonderful people that I will remain close friends with for

the rest of my life.

3) What positives do you see about the total Trinity Ministry? The obvious positive for me is that Trinity people are always working toward doing God’s work. Everybody here has a

common goal of getting people connected and learning about God’s love. I love seeing children of all ages that attend the Academy, childcare, or The Cross, learn and grow in their faith. There is an abundance of grace here at Trinity.

4) How do you see God working here at Trinity? I see examples of how God is working all around me at Trinity. I see it in all the volunteers that step forward with their

time or gifts. I see it in how groups are formed to work on a dedicated mission. I see it in watching the healthy help the

sick, and the comfortable help the poor. I see it by looking outside my office window at the ever changing seasons, and the new life that comes with the warmer temperatures. I see it as it softens the hearts of the hardened and broken. I’ve

been very blessed to be not just an observer - but also a recipient of God’s work.

MISSIONAL MOMENTUM 9

Board of Directors At the April Board of Directors meeting, the Board made a few important decisions.

First, the next Congregational Assembly was set for Wednesday night June 8th at the Family Center. We will be

combining it with an outdoor cookout again. Please join us for an evening of fellowship and business all in one!

Our business agenda will include the review of fiscal year 2016 financial and stewardship results, as well as the results of the Unleashed Commitment Sunday. Our Treasurer, Pete Scharber will then present the budget for fiscal year 2017,

which starts July 1. The budget is critical in setting our priorities for the coming year and your input is valued. Our preliminary estimates this spring point to another balanced budget. Praise the Lord!

We will also give first consideration to a Constitutional Amendment proposed by Nancy Koski to create an endowment in

memory of Linda Becken - the founder of our pre-school and Academy. The amendment is being recommended for approval by the Directors.

Also during April, the Directors commissioned a Call Committee to begin the process of finding a successor to Pastor Tim

Booth, who is retiring in June 2017. The committee is chaired by Carl Schoenbeck and Linda Hartung, and includes Nancy Donovan, Terry Geurkink, Dennis Lee, and Blaine Verdoorn. You can expect to hear much more from them

during the next year.

Finally, the Directors endorsed a plan from Todd Erickson, the President of Trinity’s Property Board, to install a new gym floor Downtown using funds raised at the Academy Gala. We look forward to a beautiful new floor for our students and

members later this summer.

From Your Deacon As the school year winds down, (I know the kids are counting the

days!) we wait in anticipation of planned family vacations, time at the cabin, and special moments to spend quality time together. I pray God

truly blesses your summer.

A GIANT Trinity Church Family HUG to all the teachers for your awesome service this year! No matter what capacity you teach in, your

dedication, hard work and time is greatly appreciated.

Our children are such an awesome gift from God. Continue to walk side by side in faith with them, see all that God has made, and let your

light shine together to his glory!

From The Stewardship Committee As I write this, Pastor Todd has started a sermon series entitled "Unleashed".

The first sermon emphasized how we are held back or "leashed" by many things that hold us back from living life in communion with our God. In our

corporate Christian life, we at Trinity are "leashed" by a mortgage, which

served its purpose for a while, but now is keeping us from achieving all that we could for the kingdom.

In the spirit of good stewardship, our hope is to manage our mortgage better

and pay it off much earlier than the terms of the loan require. By doing so, we save many dollars in interest that could be used for the vital ministries we

maintain. By the time you read this, the sermon series will be complete. You will have received a letter explaining the details further. Please prayerfully

consider how you, as a part of the body of Christ at Trinity, can help us to

reduce our debt and be better managers of the resources God has given us. Direct any questions to the leadership at Trinity or the Stewardship Committee.

For the Stewardship Committee,

Denny Hartung

GLOBAL COMPASSION 10

Compassion Child Our church participated in Compassion Sunday on April 24th. Several families chose a child from another country to

sponsor.

Their tax-deductible contribution of just $38 a month connects a child living in poverty with a loving, church-based Child Sponsorship Program which provides:

Medical checkups which often saves lives

Nutritious food

Health and hygiene training

Educational assistance

Access to special services like surgeries and disaster relief

Mentoring to help children discover their incredible value as God’s children

Most important of all, your sponsored child will hear about Jesus Christ, and be

encouraged to develop a lifelong relationship with God.

You too can sponsor a child! Go to Sponsor a Child - Compassion International. When you sponsor a child, you'll receive your child's photo, personal story, and a child sponsorship packet by mail in approximately 10 days. When

children find out they've been sponsored, the joy they feel is indescribable. Just knowing that someone across the globe cares about them means more than you can imagine. Sponsoring a child in need will profoundly change the

future for your child, and will change your own life as well.

The Bible says: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. — Proverbs 31:8-9, NIV
