AUGUST 6, 2017 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD
The Transfiguration foretells the glory of the Lord as
God, and His Ascension into heaven. It anticipates the
glory of heaven, where we shall see God face to face.
Through grace, we already share in the divine promise
of eternal life.
We are made to understand that His redeeming work
has two phases: The Cross, and glory—that we shall
be glorified with Him only if we first suffer with Him.

AUGUST 06, 2017 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord
The Power of Love
The Transfiguration, then and now, is a shining
mountaintop experience amid scenes of violence
and suffering.
On this day, August 6th, 1945, humans unleashed
a power so deadly that we’ve spent decades trying
to prevent its use in warfare again. Here’s how
President Harry S. Truman described the bomb
dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in a press release
sent out 16 hours after the attack: “It is an atomic
bomb. It is a harnessing of the basic power of the
universe. The force from which the sun draws its
power has been loosed…” Jesus, too, harnessed
the power of the universe, but His energy was
used to bring light and life.
Let’s remember to pray for our enemies today,
and call on God’s power to help us transfigure
hatred into love.
“Jesus was transfigured before them, and His face
shone like the sun.”
IMPORTANT CHANGE NOTICE
Effective Monday, August 7, 2017, there will
be only ONE morning weekday Mass at 6:30
am Monday thru Friday in the Chapel. This
will replace the two Masses said consecutively
at 6:00 am and 7:00 am. Mahalo nui loa!
Sunday Meditation
A radiant Messiah, an
out-of-body experi-
ence, time-traveling
superstars from the
past, and talking clouds — the Transfigura-
tion is one of the most memorable stories in
Scripture. We know this story: Jesus takes
Peter, James, and John up the mountain,
where He is transfigured right before their
eyes.
The mystics of the Church remind us that
words fail when we perceive even the slightest
glimpse of the glory of God. Just as Peter
rattled on excitedly, we can find ourselves
reaching for the right words to describe what
God’s presence feels like. But that’s okay.
Our actions — the witness of our peace and
joy — can speak much louder than words.
So, today, let’s dwell on this great Mystery of
Light. Imagine the glorified Jesus appearing
before you. Let His love, His majesty, and His
mercy render you speechless. Let Him remind
you that your faith is not just a matter of
what you have to do. Let Him remind you
that He is always pouring out divine grace,
always revealing His love. And that revelation
can soften even the hardest of hearts.

From the Youth/Young Adult Ministry Desk

Please join us for our next EDGE middle school night, Friday, August 11 from 6 to 8:30pm in the 2nd
Floor Activity Center.
Upcoming Events
Lifeteen (High School): Sunday, August 13 from 11:30-1:30pm in the PLC Meeting Room.

Healing Hearts to Begin Summer Session
For those who’ve lost loved ones recently, or in
the distant past, and are in the throes of grieving,
please come and be comforted by Healing Hearts
ministers, who themselves traveled the same
journey.
Our Lord assured us that those who mourn are
indeed blessed, and that they shall be comforted.
HH offers the bereaved an opportunity to come
together to share in God’s love.
For those searching for hope, come join us for six
consecutive Saturdays which began, August 5th.
If you’ve missed this first session, not to worry,
you can still catch up on the following Saturdays:
August 12, 19, 26, 2017
September 2, 9, 2017
1:00 pm—3:00 pm
2nd Floor Activity Center

SELF-CARE of the MINISTER:
Living a Balanced Life
Friday, August 25, 2017
9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
St. Stephen Diocesan Center, Kaneohe
Ministers are predisposed to take care of the
needs of others, often while ignoring their
own. But neglect of self-care can erode our effective-
ness—ultimately, our ministry is only as healthy as we
are. Join guest speaker Tom Reid, Senior Partner
with The Reid Group, who will provide tools for as-
sessing and increasing self-knowledge and informa-
tion on healthy self-care practices in a format that is
practical and easy to follow.
To register, please call Darlene Cachola at 585-3343,
or email [email protected]

Confirmation Is Not a Passage Into
Adulthood
Many Catholic Christians see Confirmation as a rite
of passage into adulthood. Yet Confirmation is a sac-
rament of beginning, of initiation. It is not a sacra-
ment of transition, of becoming an adult.
The Catechism states, “Although Confirmation is
sometimes called the ‘sacrament of Christian matur-
ity,’ one must not confuse adult faith with the adult
age of natural growth. … Age of body does not de-
termine age of soul. Even in childhood one can attain
spiritual maturity.” (no. 1308)
In the Eastern Catholic Churches, infants are rou-
tinely confirmed (“Chrismation” in the eastern tra-
ditions). In the Roman Catholic Church, young chil-
dren in danger of death are confirmed. At the other
end of the age spectrum, if an elderly person is bap-
tized, then he or she is immediately confirmed. The
fact that infants, children, teenagers, young adults
and the elderly can all be confirmed shows that Con-
firmation is not about becoming an adult. It is about
being sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Soon, seven year-olds who were baptized as infants
will complete their sacraments of initiation in this
original order. (When this will happen depends on
your parish plan.) Specifically, children will be con-
firmed prior to receiving First Communion. They
will not “transition” into adulthood. They will be
fully initiated into our faith.

ALL ABOARD, FULL STEAM AHEAD!
SHIPS, BOATS & THINGS THAT FLOAT
Developing Young Minds for 21 st Century Learning
STEM/STEAM is a multidiscipline-based learning incorporating the integration of other disciplinary
knowledge into a new whole, referred to as 21st Century learning. Although considered a new move-
ment in American Education to help teachers and students engage in a multidisciplinary approach to
learning that integrates academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(we also include Art), it is not new to Montessori Education. For over a hundred years, progressive
teaching and learning have been taking place in Montessori schools all over the world! This summer,
ELC students are “on board” to discover the world of ships, boats and things that float.
Montessori and STEM Educational Series #2: Designing Boats
Students explore different materials and how these materials affect how well a boat floats.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 - A dramatic narrative de-
scribing Daniel’s vision through which Jews drew strength from the
Lord, and through which later Christians were also comforted. This
vision of heavenly justice prophesied God entrusting the world to the
care of His Son, Jesus Christ.
SECOND READING: 2Peter 1:16-19 - This passage points to Christ
as the one empowered and sent to us by the Father. It encourages us to
hold fast to our faith, in this case, faith in Jesus Christ. Today, all three
readings takes up this same theme.
GOSPEL: Matthew 17:1-9 - This Gospel helps us understand the de-
mands of discipleship, so that the experience of Peter, James, and John
on the mountain can revitalize our faith as disciples. In this Transfigura-
tion story, God calls all disciples to listen to His Son’s teaching, in the
words He speaks and in the self-giving death He will embrace. Matthew
depicts Jesus as the one who fulfills the Law and the Prophets.
