FOREWORD

Over the past several years, Core members discerned that the Guelph SpiritanPrayer Group should do its day-to-day activities within certain guidelines.

Our recent Spiritual Director, Fr. Terrence Sehl, initiated the pooling together ofdocumentation to describe Prayer Group activity.

This August 1994 edition is a living document that is to be continuously renewed byour Spiritual Director and Core as they discern direction under the guidance and power of theHoly Spirit.

An Introduction to ....2

The Spiritan Catholic Charismatic Prayer GroupGuelph, Ontario

Who and what are we? - Our name says it all:

PRAYER GROUP

By "prayer' here we mean primarily prayer of praise and thanks to God. As one ofour songs puts it, "We come together to sing God's praise - alleluia!". This is ourbasic purpose - as indeed it is for every human who, in the words of St. IgnatiusLoyola, "is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord." This is also theprimary purpose of the great central act of our religion, the Eucharistic Liturgy, "thissacrifice of praise" (Roman Canon). Just as Christians generally do on Sundays, wemeet once a week to celebrate the great work of our salvation, "not by getting drunkwith wine, but filled with the Spirit, addressing one another with psalms and hymnsand spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your hearts, always and in everything giving thanks to God the Father in the name of our LordJesus Christ" (Eph.5:18 ff).

From this basic function of regular communal praise and thanksgiving, we findthat the Lord knits us together into a Christian community of love and service of oneanother and of the world in which we live. Of high importance in our group is ourprayer ministry, which includes praying with or over those who come to seek spiritualor physical or inner (emotional) healing at our hands. "Declare your sins to oneanother and pray for one another, that you may find healing." (James 5:16).

In our fellowship-in-the-Lord, we support one another in many other ways; insimple friendship, in instruction and counsel, in encouragement and brotherlycorrection if need be - "in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love, with the message of truthand the power of God" (2 Cor. 6:6 f). Our support goes beyond the confines of ourgroup: to the sick and those in hospital, to the needy, the impoverished, the afflicted,

the displaced, etc., according to our means and the dictates of discerning love."Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, notgrudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor. 9:7).

We are, therefore, not just a prayer group but a service group as well.

CHARISMATIC

In our prayer together and in our personal lives, we expressly seek the gifts (inGreek, charismata) that the Father has lavished upon His people through thereconciliation effected by the Blood of Jesus Christ. The basic gift is the Holy Spirit, sent by Jesus Christ from the Father as "His first Gift to those who believe, tocomplete His work on earth and bring us the fullness of grace" (Euch. Prayer IV). Asthe Spirit is Himself the very personification of divine love, this first and fundamentalGift to us is, in effect, "the love of God poured into our hearts through the Holy Spiritwho has been given to us" (Rom. 5:5), that same love (Greek, agapé) which St. Pauldescribes so beautifully in 1 Cor. 13.

Along with this basic gift of love, the fruits of which ought to become apparentin our everyday lives (cf. Gal. 5:22), there are special gifts or charisms which theSpirit bestows not so much for one's own spiritual growth as for the growth, thestrengthening, and the healing of the Christian community. The best known list ofsuch gifts is found in 1 Cor. 12:7 ff., but there are other charisms mentionedelsewhere in the New Testament that are given some to one person, some toanother, according to need. "To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is givenfor the common good .... But it is one and the same Spirit who produces all thesegifts, distributing them to each as he wills" (1 Cor. 7:11). As charismatic Christians,we take to heart Paul's injunction to "seek eagerly after love; and set your hearts onthe spiritual gifts - above all, the gift of prophecy" (1 Cor. 14:1).

CATHOLIC

Yes, but not in the sense that our prayer group is "for Catholics only". Though ourmembership is predominantly Roman Catholic, a good percentage of our membersare Christians of other denominations whose presence with us we greatly cherish. We are enriched by their exuberant faith in the Lord Jesus and their infectiousenthusiasm for the written Word of God. Also, we are happy to be able to provide an

opportunity for charismatic prayer and praise to any Christians who may not havesuch an opportunity in their own congregations.

We are a Catholic group in our origins, in doctrine, and in authority:

- in our origins - historically, the Guelph charismatic prayer-group hadits first beginnings with a small number of lay persons meeting with thelate Father John Mattice in St. Joseph's rectory. For a while later on,the meetings were held under the guidance of Fr. Locky Flanagan,CSSp, at Holy Rosary parish hall and school. Since January 1978, theyhave been held in the basement [hall] of St. Joseph's Church onPaisley Road.

- in doctrine - in doctrinal matters, the prayer-group, as a group, isguided by the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. Obviously, thereis no question of imposing specifically Catholic doctrines on non-Catholic members.

- in authority - we gladly and gratefully acknowledge the authority of theBishop of Hamilton and his Auxiliary Bishop as principal Shepherds of"all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made (them) the overseers"(Acts 20:28). We are mindful of the admonition of Scripture to "obeyyour leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over you as menwho must render an account. So act that they may fulfil their task withjoy, not with sorrow, for that would be harmful to you" (Heb. 13:17).

SPIRITAN

This is our proper name. It goes back to the days when we met at Holy RosaryParish, which is conducted by the Fathers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit(CSSp), known a 'Spiritans' for short - certainly an appropriate name for a charismaticprayer group! We are happy to bear this name in recognition of the support andencouragement given to us by the Spiritan Fathers at Holy Rosary.

This, then, is what the Spiritan Catholic Charismatic Prayer-Group is all about. We are just one of many thousands of similar groups that have sprung up in theCatholic Church since 1967 or so. Just a few years before that, in preparation for theSecond Vatican Council that was to begin in 1962, Catholics the world over echoedthe prayer of Pope John XXIII: "Renew in our own days your wonders as of a newPentecost." We believe that in the charismatic renewal, this prayer is being fulfilledmore literally than we had ever expected. Like a grass-fire fanned by a strong wind, this grass-roots movement has spread rapidly throughout the Church, fanned by thatmost surprising and irresistible of all winds, the Holy Spirit of God, "who blows whereHe will" (Jn 3:8).

True Renewal

We believe, also, that this renewal follows the pattern of all genuine spiritualrenewal in the Church. In speaking of the renewal of religious orders in our day,Vatican II (Decree of Oct. 28, 1965) and Pope Paul VI (Apostolic Exhortation of June29, 1971) pointed out that for religious communities, true renewal meansrediscovering and revitalizing the original spirit and charism of their respectivefounders. In the charismatic renewal, we see this principle at work in the Church as awhole; for the basic charism of her divine Founder is, as we have said, His HolySpirit, the soul and life-giving principle of His Body the Church. When that Spiritcame down upon the Apostles and their companions in the Upper Room, the Churchwas born.

Ecumenical Thrust

This renewal in the Catholic Church is basically the same as other pentecostalor charismatic movements by which the Lord has been renewing His people in otherChristian churches. In this we see the best hope of Christian unity, inasmuch as weare all in this way rediscovering our common roots and heritage and reliving theexperience of the first Christians. "We can say that in a real way, they (our separatedbrethren) are joined with us in the Holy Spirit, for to them too He gives His gifts andgraces whereby He is operative among them with His sanctifying power" (Vatican II,Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, #15). If we may apply the words of St. Paul,"In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of

God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christhimself" (Eph 4:11).

And so with Paul we pray:

Glory be to him whose power, working in us, can doinfinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to himfrom generation to generation in the Church and in ChristJesus for ever and ever. AMEN!

(Eph 3:20 f.)

PRAYER MEETING GUIDELINES 3

Key - centre on the risen Lord, know Jesus and find practical ways to helpothers come to know Him. Prayer meetings will thrive if they are evangelistic -have zeal for spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. Build a "come and see"evangelistic prayer meeting.

What is a Prayer Meeting?4 (read I Cor. 12,13 & 14)

- Jesus said, "Where 2 or 3 are gathered in My name, there am I in theirmidst." (Matt.18:19-20); in a prayer meeting Jesus is present as inthe Mass, in the Scripture Readings, in each other, in prophecy, etc., only we worship Him from an informal viewpoint rather than ina structured celebration.

- weekly gathering of Christians to give praise, thanks, honour and love toJesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

- time to gather in community, to praise God on a one-to-one basis, as theHoly Spirit moves us.

- come to give our full attention to Jesus - through the help of the HolySpirit (who will teach us all truth.

- pray as you feel comfortable - as if you were alone with Jesus; alsorespect the way others pray and feel comfortable; support eachother; keep open to the Holy Spirit and pray however you wish - justPRAY.

- two purposes - to praise, worship and honour God; to build up the Bodyof Christ (as brothers and sisters).

- not a parish organization - made up of individuals that get togetherweekly as a family for the purpose of giving Jesus the praise Hedeserves; first and primary purpose of all prayer is to praise andhonour the God who created us and who gives us all the gifts andblessings we enjoy each day.

- all ages are welcome - we are all children of God.

Content (read I Cor. 14:26-33)

- opening prayer; time of praise and worship; singing; prophecy (Godspeaking through someone); tongues (in song as well);interpretation of tongues; scripture reading; teaching; testimony(telling how Lord is working in your life); sharing.

- teaching reserved to one who has been cleared through the leadershipor core group - to insure proper teaching.

- singing - way of praying to, praising and worshipping God; as St. Bernardsaid, "he who sings prays twice"; should not turn into a songfest;should PAUSE between songs and LISTEN; this is the time theHoly Spirit can talk to us; need silence to reflect and allow the Spiritto work.

- pause between readings, teachings to allow the Spirit to work.

- ones that speak, prophesy or read are usually moved to do so by theSpirit (John 14:26 "the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father willsend in My name, will teach you everything and make youremember all that I have told you").

How long? (read Matt. 26:40)

- minimum of 1 1/2 hours.

Bringing Prayer Meetings to Life5 - essential elements

- Intercessory Prayer - offer intercessory prayer for whomever God wantsto draw to the prayer meetings; pray that those who come will bereceptive to the person and message of Jesus; pray that the HolySpirit gives each person a hunger and thirst for more of whateverGod wants.

- Greeter's Ministry - everyone's ministry; basic Christian hospitality;everyone at the prayer meeting has a call from God to talk to one ortwo new people to whom they have never spoken before.- regular participants need to reach out to new people and spend

time with them; during their first few meetings, new people

need to make significant contact with other group membersor they may never return.

- Book and Tape Ministry - need a strong book and tape ministry; peoplecome to meetings with all kinds of questions and needs; books andtapes available should cover the basics of Christian life and thecharismatic renewal; offer a selection of materials on further growthin prayer, understanding Scripture and Catholic faith.- book and tape ministers should see they are doing a ministry of

outreach and love - this enables them to minister andwitness to newcomers with great success; new people, maybe feeling shy and fearful, head for the book tablebecause it looks safe.

- Explanation - new people officially welcomed to the meeting, explainwhat is going on; primary goal - to help people meet the LordJesus, try to help them come to the Lord.

- Evangelizing through Song and Word - prayer and praise open theprayer meeting, seasoned by Gospel-centred music; important wayto help people come to Jesus and commit themselves to Him.

- Witness - person shares how he/she met and committed his/her life tothe Lord and experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit; a short 5-to 10-minute witness.- a prepared witness calls people to consider their lives, to repent

and turn to Christ; renews everyone by challenge to returnJesus to the centre of one's life; provides a model, showingthe way people at the prayer meeting can witnessspontaneously about Jesus and being baptized in the HolySpirit.

- Invitation for Commitment to Jesus - give people an opportunity to makeJesus Christ the Lord and centre of their lives; invite them to do itfor the first time or to surrender a new area of their lives to Jesus.- need not be an "altar call" as in Protestant circles, where you raise

your hand and come forward for prayer; very simple thingscan be done in silence, in your seat, in order to giveyourselves more fully to Jesus.

- Evangelistic Teaching - prayer meetings should provide solid basicevangelistic teachings, lasting 10 to 20 minutes, and should includepersonal testimony as well.- topics should be according to the needs of the group; give people

something to feel, something to remember, something tochange, and something to do (to grow more deeply).

Page 14: SPIRITAN CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP · The Spiritan Charismatic Prayer Group 1-2 PRAYER MEETING ... opportunity for charismatic prayer and ... We believe that in the charismatic

2 - 4

- Prayer Ministry - after the prayer meeting; people receive prayer forneeds and for healing; learn how to do this in an evangelistic way -with listening and compassion; with a willingness to witness toJesus and the release of the Spirit and to share the basic Gospelmessage.- do not just bring people to pray for their healing, bring them to

Jesus Christ the healer.

- Hospitality - ministry of greeting and hospitality continues after the prayermeeting; make contact with new people, get names and phonenumbers; encourage newcomers to return, help them find booksand tapes to answer questions, challenge them to grow in the Lord.- coffee ministry - opportunity for one-to-one evangelistic ministry;

linger over coffee and treats; let your conversations growaround Jesus - what is God doing and saying in youreveryday life.

- Follow-up - when you meet new people, you might call during the week, asking how things are going or encourage them to come to the nextmeeting; could offer to pick them up.

- Life in the Spirit Seminars - an important evangelistic opportunity forreaching those who come to prayer meetings; essential extra;prayer meetings help people to know and release the power of theHoly Spirit in their lives; however, specific evangelistic teaching andguidance is needed in order to discover and grow in the power ofthe Holy Spirit.

Community of Faith6 - support and effectiveness

- need Christian community to support us when we begin to see what itmeans to follow Christ; need this support both in order to believeand in order to act on what we believe.

- a person can bring to a faith community what might be an inspiration ofGod and get help in discerning it; the community will have beenopened by their own experience to the fact that God moves instrange ways - beautiful, risky ways.

- when we respond to God - who is Life itself - the language of love mustbe life itself.

6 extracts from: Knight, Fr. David, 1977, His way, an everyday plan for following Jesus, St. Anthony Messenger

Press, Cincinnati, OH.

2 - 5

- need community, need other believers, not only to confirm our belief thatGod is speaking to us, but to give us courage to act upon it.

Prayer Group as faith community

- anytime there are two or three gathered together in His name - it is acommunity of faith; must be gathered in His name, not under Hisname; the person of Jesus Christ is the real focus - not what mustbe put on or got through.

- group of people with a shared past and a common future; have knownthe Lord through faith, and they are seeking together to know theLord more fully and to make him known to the world; witnesses anddisciples.

- not only supportive on one another in faith, but also creative; membershelp one another to direct the light of the gospel to the reality of theworld around them.

- community should face, and face together in faith and in prayer, thequestion of Christian response to the way our society is going, orfailing to go.

- assembly of believers in which Christ is remembered and made presentthrough his scriptural Word and his Spirit speaking through themembers of his Body on earth.

Prayer Group - Listening and Praying Together

- if the prayer leaders conduct the "real action" during the prayer service, the people may react in their hearts to what is read or preached, but never spontaneously out loud; it will not be known what is intheir hearts.

- alternately where members can read a passage from Scriptureappropriate to the occasion, speak a prayer out loud, start a hymn, share with the assembly something in their mind and heart that isfelt the community should reflect on, the meeting is closer to whatSt. Paul describes as the Liturgy of the Word of the early Church:"When you assemble, one has a psalm, another some instruction togive, still another a revelation to share " (1 Cor 14:26); themembers are interacting spiritually with one another.

- there could be disorder, but there is also the possibility ofconfronting new challenges as a community interacting inprayer.

- to be able to receive challenging, prophetic words, members must beprayerfully reflecting in silence on those words; but they must alsohear others speak in response - not their intellectual arguments ortheir emotions, but the reactions they are discerning as the actionof God in their hearts; it is not enough to preach, the communityhas to respond through prayer and encouragement of one another.

- let God speak in your heart - out loud to one another; a person moved byGod acts not out of a desire to control, but out of necessity to obey.

- support one another in faith and help each other to witness to Christ inprophetic contradiction of the spirit of this world.

SERVICE TEAMS

Each team is important. Each is also linked to all the other teams. We are all theservants of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are all part of the Body of Christ and, as such, must manifest that unity in all our actions.

You are encouraged to be in more than one ministry if the Lord is calling you todo so.

All that we do is for the honour and glory of God and for our salvation.

Coordinators should always invite a variety (regular, occasional, and new) ofprayer group members to assist them on either a long or short term (one night) basis.

Service team coordinators meet with Core regularly (or as necessary) for prayerand discussion. [Should contact responsible (laison) Core member if there areconcerns/ideas/suggestions that should go on agenda of upcoming Core meeting]
