We remember God's faithful love for us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For "behold, you are angry, and we are sinful" (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God's promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God's might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to "rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you" (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God's hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory. Growing PainsWelcome to the new combined bulletin of our cluster parishes! For many of our parishioners the new format of the bulletin will be familiar. For others, this will be a little bit of an adjustment.

Over the past Thanksgiving, there was a family moment that relates to the trial of fitting the news from three parishes into one bulletin. My brother and two sisters came to my parents’ house in Baton Rouge for Thanksgiving. I was happy to see my siblings and even more excited to see my nieces and nephews. As a family, we like to do activities together like walk to the park or ride bikes. As we were getting ready to go to the park, the eldest niece (8 years old) was having a hard time with her shoes. Her frustration spilled over into loud lamentations, “Daddy, this shoe doesn’t fit! My toe goes all the way to the end!”

Growing pains are inevitable for growing bodies; I would suggest the same is true of growing parishes, too. This bulletin is one sign that the three parishes are coming together as a cluster – a small sign of growth – even though this change will be an inconvenience, or pain, to some parishioners.

I felt the first weekend of Advent was appropriate to start the combined bulletin because in Advent we begin a new liturgical year in the Church. A good way to ring in the new liturgical year is celebrating the Sacrament of “fresh starts”, also known as Confession. I mentioned in last week’s homily that we have a Penance Service at Our Lady of Peace at 7pm on Wednesday, December 6. If you haven’t gone to Confession this year or in years, take advantage of this time where we’ll have many priests you’ve never met before. (I know that’s a selling point!) I hope we can all grow during this season of Advent.

If anyone from St. James or St. Philip would like to participate you can put a plain white envelope marked with the same information as above in the collection and it will be sent to Our Lady of Peace.

Collection for St. Joseph Abbey In March of 2016 thirty buildings on the St. Joseph Abbey campus were damaged by flood waters. The estimate for damages was in the millions of dollars. St. Joseph Seminary College is the largest Catholic seminary college in the United States with over 140 students from 22 dioceses in seven states. As many of the

priests in our diocese were educated at the seminary college, it is very important for us to support the monks in their efforts to restore the affected buildings. This year the Bishop has authorized a special collection to benefit the abbey and the seminary. This collection will be taken up on the weekend of Dec. 9 & 10 at all churches in the diocese. Please be generous in your response to this appeal. (This collection replaces the collection for Retired Religious)

Thank You for Your Support More than thirty years ago, the Diocese of Baton Rouge established the Bishop’s Annual Appeal with a desire to expand ministry and increase Catholic influence in each city and rural community in the diocese. All those Moved by Faith have helped make an historic vision a success, and neighbors in need have been the greatest beneficiaries. If you have already mailed your contribution this year, please accept our thanks for your gift of support. If you’ve not yet made your commitment, we invite you to do so this weekend, as offertory envelopes will be available at the doors of the church for your convenience. Each contribution furthers the building of the kingdom of Christ in our day. “I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you” (Mt 17:20b).Prayerfully remember the many essential ministry efforts funded through each campaign, and celebrate God’s blessing and your parish’s generous involvement. For additional information concerning the impact of your gracious gift or to donate online, visit www.baabr.org.
