Bath time -- often it’s fun. Some-times it’s a chore, especially when it’s hair-washing time! So, here’s

a tip that can have the kids begging for another shampoo! When shampooing your child’s hair, make lots of lather. Great sudsy lather. Ya’ know what it’s perfect for? Paint-ing, of course! The lather is the paint -- your child’s finger is the paint brush. The tile is the canvas and your child can paint away – anything the artist likes by using that lathery paint. EVEN better...supply a few clean, new, thin paint brushes to use instead of a finger.

Buy some at the dollar store -- may-be a package of new paintbrushes. The cheapest you can find are just fine. There’s only one rule with this painting lesson. They have to clean up themselves and that’s fun, too. Use a clean squeeze bottle filled with water and let them squirt it all over the tile wall, washing away their masterpiece but not leaving a mess for you to clean later. I just bet the kids will be motivated to take a bath...even wash their hair...the next time!

Welcome to the Birthday Party issue! While we always hope our pages are inspirational, this month we’re featuring South Jersey locations to

throw your kids a perfect birthday extravaganza (starting on page 14). Birthdays are meant to be a joy, but with busy lives for todays super moms, it can be overwhelming. Make the day hassle- free and hand over the details to a professional, and enjoy the day with family and friends. The clock is ticking to find the right camp for your kids this summer. My son was always very independent & had often expressed an interest to attend sleep away camp when he was 13. We selected a camp that seemed well suited for him and we planned for him to bunk with a friend that he had gone to day camp with for a few years. The year he turned 13 we drove him a few hours away to upstate Pennsylvania to meet his buddy to attend sleepover camp and to connect with other Korean adoptees for a week. Needless to say they both hated it and I made the six-hour round trip again a couple days later to bring him home. It wasn’t the camp experience itself he hated, but more the distance, unstructured environment and bonfire adoption talk that wasn’t a good fit. The following year he went on weekend trips with Tall Pines CIT’s (counselor in training) to the Poconos and had a blast. Don’t make the same mistake that I made, read the article written by our camp expert, Jess Michaels, “5 Common Mistakes Parents Make When Choosing A Camp” (page 25).Here’s what some of our writers have to say about how to throw a fun birthday party.

Probably my favorite birthday party that we did was a pool party/sleepover for my daughter’s 8th birthday. The girls swam,

had dinner, decorated craft picture frames for a group picture we took of them in the pool, and then we projected a movie onto a sheet we had draped over the pool fence, which they watched spread out on their towels and blankets on our sand volleyball court. It felt like an entire day at the beach without ever leaving our back yard.”~ Erin TaylorFor our boys 1st birthdays, we did a combo life-blessing/birthday party. The life-blessing ceremony included various rituals, songs and intention setting that held significant meaning for our family, followed by an all-out party to celebrate our boy’s first amazing year of life!” ~ Carolynn Aristone

I love to have theme parties at a venue instead of home. Whether it’s at a skating arena, a playground area or a kid friendly restaurant, it’s easier and the kids seem to have a lot more fun. The venue provides the food and clean up and all I have to do is bring the cake and goodie bags!”~ Dolores Hoffman

Birthdays are very special in our house-hold. My family and I celebrate an entire month when it is one of our birthdays. My boys Connor 10, and Andrew 8 make the decision if they want a party or a larger gift. Lately, it has been the latter of the two. It’s sad to say I think my days mak-ing party favors are coming to a close.”~ Tara Pyfrin

I think the best parties are in the backyard with streamers and balloons. Kid-friendly foods, ice cream, birthday cake and plenty of friends are all part of a kid’s dream party with plenty of gifts. I love home-made cakes, but baking is not my specialty, so I would purchase a cake, with plenty of icing and lots of candles.”~ Cheryl Lynne Potter

the honest company hand sanitizer spray I’m not a fan of hand sanitizer that has a strong alcohol odor and this product fits the bill. Of course, the active ingredient is alcohol to do the job, but it smells very fresh like lemon essential oil. My hands feel softer after applying and the bottle is small with tight fitting lid to carry in purse or bag. Honest.com, $6

snuza hero Snuza Hero is a portable, cordless move-ment device to monitor baby’s breathing and movement to avoid SIDS. A great product for the parent with a preemie! It easily clips to baby’s diaper generating a soft tick to let parents know that everything is fine. If no movement is detected for 15 seconds it will

vibrate to arouse the baby and if it still doesn’t detect anything within five seconds of the vibration, it will alert you with an alarm. Target.com, $100

Spring break is coming up for many of our kids in the next few weeks. Some people choose to take a vacation during this break, while some choose to stay home. In my circle of friends, many talk

about what their plans for that time will be. But I have a different sugges-tion. Instead of focusing on whether to take a vacation or not, what if you chose instead to intentionally spend spring break being present with and for your children? Whether you plan to stay at home or take a vacation, if you are able to take some time away from your work, what if you made sure to plan in some fun times with your kids? I don’t necessarily mean going to the local fun zone or amusement park. I mean spending some time engaging with your child in something that is important to him/her. It does not even have to cost money. I know this spring break, as I do regularly, I will touch base with my 12 year old by sitting down and “challenging” him to an Xbox game of Madden ‘15 Football. I always lose, but it is a precious opportu-nity for me to get into “his” world for a while. And when we are finished, I can feel how much more connected we are to each other. He enjoys

beating me at the game, but he also enjoys teaching me how to play and having something where he feels like the expert. Do you know what things your child is really into? Can you find a way to engage with your child in those activities? I am certain you will not regret it if you do. Our children want our time and attention way more than anything else they might ask for.Happy Spring Break!✲Erin Taylor, MA is a wife, therapist, writer, parent coach and mom to four children ages 7, 9 and 12. Ask the DocQ: What new advancements in orthodontic treatment are available that safely reduces the time it takes to straighten your teeth while still achieving great results?

A: At Kadar Orthodontics, we use Insignia™ Advanced Smile Design … the most innovative orthodontic system available today. When beginning Insignia treatment, we first scan the patient’s mouth, generating a virtual 3D model of their smile structure. This 3D model creates a visual representation of each patient’s anticipated results, giving them a clear vision of their new, beautiful smile transformation before treatment even begins. Additionally, Insignia allows Kadar Orthodontics to review and conduct a thorough smile analysis based on each individual’s specific smile anatomy. “Once we create a customized treatment plan,” said Dr. Kadar, “we are able to order brackets and wires tailored to each individual patient. This is unlike traditional braces that are generic and one-size-fits-all. As a result, each patient’s final smile is unique to their own dental structure. By customizing treatment based on each person’s specific facial features, we can now minimize minor adjustments and tweaks throughout the treatment process, leading to fewer in-office visits, faster results and improved patient comfort.

“With Insignia, the level of customization I’m able to offer each patient is truly exceptional,” said Dr. Tom Kadar. “The best part is I can give patients, from kids to adults, the great Kadar smile they’ve always wanted, but with fewer office visits and faster results -- a win-win✲

om Pajamas Are Not For Wegmans... Are They?

Brie Latini

I have a confession to make. I have gone out in my pajamas. They were quick errands, and I made sure I put on a bra and deodorant, but underpinnings aside, I have been out in public in my pajamas. A cursory glance around your local supermarket, Target, school-drop off and wine seller will tell you that women across the neighborhood have jumped on the very soft, fuzzy pajamas-as-clothing bandwagon. Places like Wawa or the gas station seem to be the gateway destination for wearing pajamas out-side of the house. We just need to fill up the tank the night before a big trip, or need a cup of coffee before we start selling our children to the highest bidder. I offered an anonymous, unscientific poll to my women friends on FB and this explanation seemed to be the standard; I was in my paja-mas, Wawa is a two minute trip, and changing would have added unnecessary time. Why take an extra five minutes to put on real pants when you could have coffee in your hand in three? As an occasional pajamas-in-public wearer, I get it. The ten minute errands don’t always warrant a wardrobe change. Still (and remembering this is only my personal perspective), I don’t know if public PJ’s feel right to me for a longer or more “formal” errand. I may not be the most stylish person to hit the streets, but I feel a little bet-ter about myself when I have put on real clothes and brushed my hair. I don’t need to shrink into the back-ground because if I run into someone, I won’t be em-barrassed about my appearance. It sounds silly to worry about how you feel when you are going to buy frozen chicken nuggets and apples but, trust me. Twenty minutes of feeling good about yourself can carry over in a positive way. Twenty minutes of feeling like you’re not even worth real pants can carry over, too. If you are oozing confidence that can’t be swayed by wearing SpongeBob flannels to Weg-mans, than go on with your bad self. But if you need the boost, put on the real pants. You’ll be happy that you did!✲

ANYTHING is a solid alternative to wearing your pajamas out of the house...but you should still look presentable while trying to be comfortable. Here are a few options that are sure to check all of the ‘comfy’ boxes on your list all while still adding an element of style…• Replace your bathrobe with a warm oversized

sweater and leggings• Forgo your feetie PJs for a jumpsuit.• Hang your night-gown up for a soft

sweater dress or tunic and fleece lined tights.

• Swap your flannel pants and old college tee for a pair of yoga pants and cute zip-up (‘Athleisure’ wear is currently on trend too!) By Ashley Schafer

Researchers recently reported a sharp decline with children and their love towards reading books for pleasure after the age of eight. An article recently published in Scholastic revealed across

all age groups, “83 percent of kids say they loved those times when parents read to them aloud at home. Only 24 percent of 6-to-8-year-olds and 17 percent of kids ages 9 to 11 say that someone reads aloud to them at home, and many seem to miss it. Four in ten children in that 6-to-11 age range say they wished their parents had continued reading aloud to them.” What is it about a Read Aloud children find interesting and why are they beneficial? The benefits of a Read Aloud include the understanding of Concepts of Print, vocabulary and fluency. The objective of reading is comprehension. Each of these components directly relate to comprehension. The love of reading begins at home and should commence before the age of 1. Before a child can read they visualize images on a page. Children with reading disabilities benefit from pictures on a page because they can make connections to the text with the image and begin to activate schema. Children make observations while others are reading. They observe how to hold a book, turn pages, and read from left to right. While reading, it is beneficial to point to pictures and ask questions. It is also beneficial to use your fingers to read titles, sentences and words, these are all elements of Concepts of Print. Older children can identify words with specific beginning and ending sounds; this assists with their phonological awareness. Vocabulary is another benefit of a Read Aloud. Books have 50% more “rare words” than a television program. Understanding words in a text assists with comprehension. Children who are exposed to wide-range

vocabulary entering Kindergarten read better overall than children who are not exposed to vocabulary. When reading aloud it is beneficial to ask questions about specific words on a page and elaborate on the meaning of unknown words. It is also important to point out synonyms, antonyms, and homophones while reading. When children have exposure to these skills outside of school it assists with their understanding and application in school. Parents are models for their children. “Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.” When a parent sits and reads to their child the child listens to their fluency. Children begin to understand that words on a page tell a story through expression. Fluency also connects word recognition and comprehension. Fluency takes time and many early readers do not grasp the concept until after they are able to decode words. Parents can practice with their child to increase fluency by completing repeat readings of the same passage or book. Another way to increase fluency is through “choral reading”. Choral reading is reading the same text simultaneously with a child. This not only provides support to children while reading but also builds confidence and motivation when reading. Reading is a clear indicator of success. Parents need to instill the love of reading in their child by modeling reading through a Read Aloud. It only takes 20 minutes a day to bond with your child and give them a chance of a lifetime.✲Tara Twente Pyfrin M.ED, MA is a South Jersey Mom, Reading Specialist, Adjunct English Professor and Doctorate Student studying Reading and Literacy. As parents, we often struggle to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and instill those values in our children on a daily basis. The balance be-

tween eating enough and eating healthy and encouraging our children to get active can sometimes be challenging. As National Nutrition Month approach-es and the winter months dissipate, we turn our focus to enjoying warmer weather, eating healthier and being more active. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in their campaign focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and sound eating and physical activity habits. According to Melissa Kava-naugh, website (www.melissa-nutrition.com), Certified Health Counselor and owner of her own health and fitness practice in Cherry Hill. “It’s (National Nutrition Month) an opportu-nity to be aware of food and how food affects each of us as individuals. Sound nutrition is very individual. What works for me may

not work for someone else. That being said, we could all benefit from eating more fruits and vegetables and less packaged processed foods,” she said. With the multitude of food choices, different flavors, that line the grocery store shelves, how do we get our children to make healthy choices? With younger children, the foods you choose is ultimately what winds up on their plate. Variety is the key. Crys-tal Pizarro, President and CEO of Advanced Wellness Solutions LLC, encourages parents to make the entire shopping experience inter-active. “Winter is the perfect season to nestle in and nominate your little one to Chef Ex-traordinaire! Start your grocery store adven-ture with fun kid-inspired re-useable shopping bags and play eye-spy with fruits and veggies! Focusing on shapes and colors, your little one will have fun being the winner of this game! Grab some ice cube trays, fun cookie cutter shapes, and colorful plates and experiment with bite size servings complete with lots of

praise for trying new goodies.” Another way to get our children making healthy choices is to have them lend a hand in the kitchen. The USDA recommends anywhere from 1-1 1/2 cups of fruit a day, depending on age, vegetables anywhere from 1-3 cups, whole and refined grains 1 and ½ ounces. It is sug-gested that half of the grains be whole grains; 2-4 ounces of protein, and 2-3 cups of dairy. In this day of technology when we are surrounded by iPads and IPhones, how do we get your little ones to unplug? Kavanaugh suggests leading by example. “You could join gymnastics or a dance studio where activities are generally indoors. Another option would be indoor swim classes. Play with your child. On days when it’s sunny and not as cold jump on the opportunity and go for a walk, go to the playground or encourage your child to play outside. If it’s too cold to go outside dance around to your favorite song or if your family has an interactive video game like those avail-able for Wii – play one of the physical video games.” When it comes to physical activity and children exercise should be fun like play time. Pizarro said, “Play a game of Simon Says with lots of different movements and then ask “Si-mon Says” questions to find out what they like about their favorites. Create a pictorial catalog with the child doing each activity for them to choose daily. Props and fun outfits add to the family fun and spontaneity! Reward systems can be helpful too but be sure to help them discover what about the exercise makes them feel great so they learn the intrinsic rewards for exercising.” Kavanaugh agrees. “Physical activity for a child should really be playing not working out. Find out what your child likes to do and lead by example. If your child sees you being physically active, he or she is more likely to be physically active.” The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics also promotes National Nutrition Day with a host of fun engaging activities for children’s minds of various ages, including a word search, Sudoku, rate your plate and, even a timeline of fad diets. No matter what activities you choose, the ideals you instill in your children from and early age, will shape their values of good health and nutrition.✲

every year as your child’s birthday approaches, you face the big decision: have the party at home or find a venue? finding a venue often seems like the least intimidating and most appealing option. But it is possible to throw an easy, affordable and perfect party in your own house. here’s everything you need to know to host a rainbow art themed birthday celebration. It’s sure to be a hit for boys or girls at any age!

PLaNNINgMinimize the guest list. If you have a large family and your child has lots of friends, consider limiting the party to children only and invite family members over for cake and ice cream another day. Since your house isn’t a party hall, you likely don’t have a surplus of chairs and tables. Ask friends and family if you can borrow theirs – rounding up items like folding chairs, coolers, and beverage dispensers is easier than you think and won’t cost a penny.

INvITaTIoNsTurn your child’s artwork into an invitation. Whether it’s crayon scribbles by your two-year-old or a drawing of balloons by your 6-year-old, you can scan their creation and use it for a background image. All you have to do is add the invitation text. Make the invitations extra special by putting confetti in the envelopes or tying brightly colored ribbon around the card.

A Colorful At-Home DIY

Birthday BashBy Louisa Kopp

CrafT aCTIvITIEsNeed something to entertain the kids during the party? Decorate cupcakes with bright colored can-dies, make necklaces or bracelets with rainbow colored beads, or finger paint rainbows on small canvases.favorsGive guests a take-away bag of age-appropriate art supplies, such as crayons with a coloring page or watercolor paints with a brush. At-tach a tag that says “You color my world” or “Thanks for getting arty at my party!”

MENuKids don’t need fancy food, so keep the menu simple. If you hold the party between lunch and dinner time, snacks and cake will be plenty. And you can use the money you save from not renting a venue to buy prepared foods. In keeping with the theme, serve Goldfish Colors crackers and colorful fruit and vegetable trays. Make edible “paint-brushes” from Rice Krispy treats dipped in colored frosting. With a rainbow colors theme, you can easily decorate a homemade cake yourself. Make a paper stencil of your child’s age and lay it on top of the cake. Then simply fill it with small colored candies to create a rainbow number. Or just arrange colored candies in a rainbow design on the cake.

DECoraTIoNs There are thousands of decoration possibilities for a rainbow art themed party. Here are a few easy and inexpensive ideas:w Hang streamers and balloons arranged in

order by color to create a rainbow backdrop for the food table.

w Fill mason jars with crayons, markers, and paintbrushes for colorful centerpieces.

w Glue crayons around cans or jars to use as utensil holders.

w Paint a giant number (your child’s age) on a poster-size sheet of paper or canvas to use as an artsy backdrop or to display with a tabletop easel.

w Print black and white photos of your child on bright color paper and arrange them on a wall to make a rainbow.

w Set out party hats in rainbow hues to add to the table decor and for the children to wear.

Talking with your children about death is never easy. As adults, we never quite understand it, so how are we supposed to convey any kind of logic to our children?

The simplest answers are the most effective. Dying is a natural part of life. Children have witnessed this in many ways, through plants, an-imals and insects. Children understand more than we think. The natural order of life helps us explain it better; such as, grandma lived a long and healthy life and, like all livings things, people die. Breaking the news to a youngster can be heart-wrenching. Chil-dren feed off their parents’ reactions. The calmer you are and the less frightened you seem, the better they will handle it. But how about when a young person dies? Your first instinct might be to shield them from the truth or sugar-coat it as best you can. Children always imagine the worst when you do this. Be straight forward and talk on a level they understand. Depending on your religious beliefs, you may help your child find comfort by telling them that a part of that person, called the spirit or soul, lives on and that part of them goes to heaven. It may make them feel better to know they will see them again in heaven some day.

Never use the analogy that death is like sleeping. You may think it comforts your child because sleep is a peaceful state. However, equat-ing death with sleep may make them fearful of night time altogether. For children 13 and older, the more you smother them with, “Are you ok?” all the time, the less likely they will be to approach you with honest concerns or questions. Let them know they can ask you anything, any time and then, let them mourn. Being there silently is more productive than overwhelming them with pressure to feel a certain way. Never make a child go to a viewing or funeral. All children are different and the maturity level, not the age, rules. Keeping your chil-dren busy with activities related to the deceased, for instance, drawing pictures, making sympathy cards and even poster boards with photos, can help them transition from death to mourning to celebrating the person’s life. If your child continues to struggle months after a death, seek help from the school counselor, clergy or family therapist.✲

8 apps Every Parent Needs in Their Toolbox

By matthew Brenner

REMEMbER thE Milk Writing on that little slip of paper before you leave the house probably isn’t the best way to stay organized. This “to-do” list like application is easy to use and you can check it anywhere! Plus, it will not get lost under your seat in the car.

isittER Lugging around heavy or bulky baby monitors can be cumbersome even for the most prepared parent. This application allows you to turn any 2 iOS devices into a sender and receiver baby monitor. This convenience is perfect for vacation or when you’re visiting a friend’s house and you want to be in another room while simultaneously monitoring your baby’s sleep.

kid ModE by ZoodlEs Let’s face it, you probably use your phone for almost everything: whether it be checking your work email or online shopping. Last thing you need is your child accidentally stumbling on something they should’nt or deleting something you need. This application allows your phone to go into “kids mode” where your child will have access only to safe child friendly activities.

sygiC FaMily This comprehensive application is great for par-ents who really want control and peace of mind over their children’s whereabouts. It tracks all your family member’s location using GPS, their phone battery life, and even has a panic button. Not all families will be comfortable with this hypersen-sitive level of control. It’s up to your family to decide what you’re comfortable with.

aNiMal paNts This is more of a kid-friendly funny app. It allows children to dress certain animals. They can use their creativity to make outfits and col-ors that match. This is wonderful for children who are just starting to make decisions about their own outfits.

ihoMEopathy So you do know what to do when your child scrapes their knee, but what if a bee stings them? What about that awkwardly placed rash? This app won’t be necessary until you REALLY need it, then you will be happy you do. Ihomeopathy covers basic injuries and ailments- including treatment methods.

ibEaRbaby Can’t be there for every “first”? Do not worry, iBearBaby has you covered; it tracks every-thing from weight, height, to trips to the doc-tor. A new feature even allows recording for “first” time events such as baby’s first words (though having your phone ready for such an occasion would probably require some luck).

play123 What toddler does not like to play with colors, blocks, and numbers? This interactive app even features a voice that helps guide children along. Good Luck!Matthew Brenner, Freelance Writer and Martial Arts Instructor, Contact @ [email protected]

You’ve made the exciting decision to send your child to camp. A summer camp experience will provide your child with many op-portunities including trying new activities, building confidence

and independence, the chance to be part of a community and learning to live and work with others. These are all skills that will help your child to be successful in school and in life. When choosing a camp, there are many factors parents want to consider. There are also some common mis-takes that families make when choosing a camp. Here are the top five mistakes you’ll want to avoid when finding the right camp for your child.

Choosing a camp because your friend’s child goes there – Keep in mind that each child is different and a great camp for one child may not be the right fit for another. Parents should do their own camp research. Families want to make sure a camp’s philosophy compliments their parenting style. While some par-ents are looking for a camp that develops self-esteem through team sports and healthy rivalry, others may be looking for cooperative learning and noncompetitive activities. Remember to involve your child in the search. The more involved a child is in the pro-cess of choosing a camp, the more successful the experience will be.

sending your child to sleepaway camp too early – Just because children can go to overnight camp beginning at age seven doesn’t mean your child is emotionally ready. If you are considering sleepaway camp, make sure your child is interested in going and has also had successful overnights at relatives and friend’s house. Children should also be able to do certain things like shower, brush their teeth and get dressed independently. Keep in mind that some children may not want to be away for a long period of time and that some children are happy to continue going to day camp.

sending your child to camp with a friend – While children may feel more comfortable going to camp with a friend, and sometimes parents feel more comfortable with this too, it isn’t always a good idea. When you send your child to camp with a

friend, your child will feel they have that friend to count on and might not be as outgoing in making new friends. One of the friends may also get closer to another camper and the child he or she came with could feel left out. You also might run the risk of the children not being as close when they return home after the summer.

Not seeing the camp before registering or meeting the camp director - Visiting a camp’s website is a good starting point for researching a camp, but it doesn’t replace seeing the camp in person and meeting the camp director. Seeing the camp, especially the summer before when children are there, allows families to get a real feel for the camp. Going to the camp also gives families a chance to get to know the camp director. Fam-ilies want to make sure they click with the camp director and feel comfortable leaving their child in his or her care. If you can’t visit the camp, at the least, you should meet the camp director. Most camp directors will do home visits which will give you a chance to find out more about the camp program and will allow to meet and become familiar with the camp director.

picking a camp that doesn’t have outside review – When choosing a summer camp, parents want to make sure they take an active role in determining that the camp they are sending their child to is fully committed to providing a summer of fun and growth in a well supervised and safe camp environment. Make sure the camp you choose is inspected each summer by the Depart-ment of Health and ask if the camp is Accredited by the American Camp Association. Beyond a state’s basic licensing requirements, ACA Standards address specific areas of programming, personnel, health care, emergency response, management practices and youth development
