Magazine Double page spread Analysis…

Page 2: Magazine DPS analysis

This is double page spread is taken from Clash magazine, who have a consistent style when it comes to their layouts, however still manage to change it, yet still make it their own. The first thing I like about this double page spread, is the equal 3 columns which are used in the article. I think this page has a consistent layout and makes it easier for the reader to read the article as they are able to follow it clearly.

The colour scheme used for this magazine is one of my favourite features as they have managed to use colour, however toned it down as well as all of the colours complimenting one another, noticing a significant reoccurrence of the colour orange. There is a shadow cast over the model used, which gives a mysterious edge to the person featured, maybe signaling that the reader may find out something about ‘King Krule’, that they did not know about, ultimately enticing the audience in to read the article.

We can see from this picture that the key feature of this magazine is the picture, as it spread just over both pages, which makes the reader focus on who the article is about. This has been done cleverly to drawn the audience in, and though the shadow disguises ‘King Krule’, we still have the element of being able to see who it is. Doing this will also give a guideline for clash to see how much space they need between text.

This magazine has many different qualities to many other magazines with typical conventions. One noticeable feature is the bold title which is used at the top, this gives a clear indication of what and who is featured in the magazine, however this could be seen as a typical convention. The difference in this title is that it spreads over the two pages to show that is it the main feature of the magazine, potentially drawing readers in.

The magazine has a similar layout to clash in terms of columns as they also use 3 columns for their article. This gives a structured view of the article, once again making it easier for the reader to follow through. I feel that the colour scheme has been well thought out as these greyscale effect gives the extra ‘pop’ into the colour used in the title. From the colour scheme and model chosen I can also identify that this genre would be around Indie/Rock or maybe even the mix of two. The styling of the model also adds to this identification, which have been done appropriately, as he is wearing a simple short sleeved t-shirt, which shows off the tattoos in which he has, adding more towards that scene and enticing particular social groups into reading about him. The key element which I notice makes this magazine different is the way that the layout all blends in with each other, rather than a clear structure being formed e.g. picture on one page, text on another. This gives the magazine a sleek finish, without looking too divided up, giving it that informal touch it needs to entice its audience in.

This magazine is similar to the second magazine in which I analysed as it shares the same features in terms of the design. The first thing that I notice is that this magazine has tried to make Jessie J the main feature of the magazine using a close range shot, and enlarging the picture so that it fits across just over two pages, giving the reader a clear indication of what the article is to be about. The second feature in which I notice is the bold heading, ‘Rising Star’. To start with this gives us an insight into what is written in the magazine and whether or not it will be interesting for the reader. Being a female, I think that this magazine has took into consideration what young teenage girls will want to see, so have chosen a ‘rising star’ to use as a role model, so that people feel inspired by her.

The model has been styled using fur which is seen as fashionable, and concentrated heavily on her makeup, which matches with the colour scheme. Overall this gives the magazine a professional look as she still stands out but still fits in with theme of the magazine. The font use to write the article is a clear font, so that this enables the readers to be able to read the article at ease, and may also help younger readers meaning that this magazine is aimed at all ages, targeting a big gap in the market.
