Summertime is for Builders! While 2009 saw LowCountry Habitat for Humanity place two more partner families in affordable housing situations, 2010 is shaping up to be our busiest and most exciting year yet!

This coming summer we begin building in Penn Village on Ernest Drive in St. Helena. Infrastructure work has already started and construction on our first house will begin in June. This house is being sponsored by the Dataw Island Community. It is scheduled for completion in the fall.

The second house is being sponsored by the Spring Island Community. It

will also be completed sometime in the fall of 2010.

A third and fourth house will also be built at this site. The multi-home site model is based on the recently completed five-house project at Prince and Hamar.

In addition to building four new houses on St. Helena, LowCountry Habitat for Humanity is also participating in the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. This federal grant program allows us to renovate and rebuild foreclosed houses and put our partner families in them.

This summer we will be working on four homes in Beaufort—two in the Mossy Oaks neighborhood, one in the Northwest Quadrant, and one in Shell Point that were abandoned or foreclosed.

This gives us the potential to place eight of our partner families in eight safe, affordable homes in the coming two years. While that output is a goal of our program, it will not come easily.

Infrastructure costs on the Penn Center houses alone—providing a road, a septic system, water lines, etc.—are estimated to cost $100,000. The fortunate part of this is that a federal grant—the Self-Help Homeownership Program–pays for half the cost. We are currently in the process of raising the remaining funds.

In the middle section of this newsletter, you will see a list of contributors to our organization in 2009. These donors are essential to the success of our organization.

For Penn Village to be successful, we need to continue to increase the number of names on that list. Please consider adding your name for 2010—and helping us continue to provide affordable housing to residents in Northern Beaufort County.

Our Mission

In response to God’s love, LowCountry Habitat for

Humanity creates long-term partnerships to build and

renovate affordable housing with volunteers and responsible families in

need.

Our ReStore

LowCountry Habitat ReStore was created to help fund LowCountry

Habitat for Humanity’s House Construction Program; to provide a

source for donated new and used items at reasonable prices; and to reduce the amount of construction material waste

in local landfills.

Local Marines make the most of a Saturday completing roofing work at the Palm Drive house.

We are once again at that point in our year where some board members terms have ended. The good thing about an ending is that somewhere else there is a beginning, and in the case of our board and its leadership, that is certainly the case.

We welcome a familiar face as our new Board Chairman – Steve Keeler. Steve has been a member of our board since 2003 and is an excellent leader of people. His vision and dedication to service to his fellow man will in turn serve us well.

We also welcome Bob Albon to our Vice-Chairman slot. Bob has been a member of our board since 2009 and was a driving force behind the funding of the Dataw House.

Jim Laughnane continues as our secretary and Russ Dimke continues as our treasurer.

We also welcome Edward Smalls to our board. Edward is a Beaufort native who brings exceptional insight to our board.

Of course, with new faces and new leadership, it means that we are also saying goodbye to some board members.

Aaron Miller has served on our board since 2007 and was helpful in serving on our Family Support Committee and with development of our construction safety policies.

We also bid farewell to Susan Ferguson, a board member since 2006 and our Board Chairman since 2008. Susan put her considerable energy and intensity to work with both the ReStore and the Birdhouse Auction, among many other things.

During Susan’s leadership our affiliate completed five houses at Prince and Hamar, started the project at Mint Farm, purchased land from Penn Center, served 32 families in the Northwest Quadrant through the Block by Block program and expanded the ReStore—to name but a few accomplishments.

We still have a full plate of projects in the foreseeable future. With our experienced leadership and the fresh insights of a new member, we’re looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Habitat Myth and Truth

Myth: Habitat houses lower neighborhood property values.

Truth: Many studies of low-cost housing show that affordable housing has no adverse effect on other neighborhood property values. In fact, Habitat for Humanity believes its approach to affordable housing can improve neighborhoods and commu-

nities by strengthening community spirit; increasing the tax base; and building better citizens through the cooperative efforts involved in Habitat construction.

Myth: Habitat is a Southern Poverty Program

Truth: While founded and based in Georgia, we have affiliates in every state and 83 countries worldwide.

members of a campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity. They choose a Habitat International affiliate to spend spring break with working on houses.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH...

Jerry Marlowe, a regular volunteer at the construction site, is especially busy this time of year. In addition to

being a regular crew member, Jerry has graciously donated his time and labor towards the building of our bird-houses for our Birdhouse Auction.

This year, as in years past, Jerry built

well over 40 birdhouses for artists to mold into a work of art. Without Jerry’s elaborate and intricate bird-houses, our artists would have a blank canvas. Congratulations on a job well done and thank you, Jerry!

SEASONAL HELP NEEDED AT THE RESTORE!

This summer, as in most summers, our ReStore loses one of its most valuable assets to more tolerable climates—our volunteers. Specifi-cally we lose volunteers who help us pick up donated items in our truck.

This summer promises to be busy as we will soon have items donated from the City of Beaufort and the Beaufort Housing Authority. If you have the interest and ability to help out on the truck—picking up items for re-sale in the store—please con-tact Jenny Drake at 525-0055.

COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE!

This spring we were once again pleased to welcome a Collegiate Challenge group to help us in our building projects. The group that came in March was from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. They spent a week finishing work on our Mint Farm site.

In May we will also host two groups, one from Penn State Uni-versity and one from Wekiva Presbyterian Church in Long-wood, Florida. All collegiate challenge groups are made up of

Yes! I want to help keep building homes and communities here in Beaufort!
