Penn Village Neighbors Current Habitat homeowner Mary Weber has experienced the blessings of owning a Habitat House since moving in back in January. She didn’t keep the blessings to herself, however. She passed along a little encouragement and information to her friend, April Redd. “As she pursued her sweat equity obligation for Habitat, I kept her daughter so she could work as needed,” said Redd. Seeing Weber’s excitement about the program, Redd decided to attend an orientation session and soon found herself, along with her daughters Romia and Jessica, as one of the families selected to go through the process of owning a Habitat home. Now, near to completing her sweat equity, she is slated to move into the Dataw House in April. “Being accepted into the program has answered a much-needed prayer,” she said. “There’s nothing like having a place to call your own.” April and her children are coming from a situation of living in a community with high drug activity and lack of safety. “I have been praying for a home where I could raise my children without the cares of distribution of drugs and the sense of imprisonment,” she said. For Redd—a Washington, D.C. native and employee of the Beaufort County Emergency Management Department—the opportunity for homeownership has been worth the risk to see the smiles of excitement on her daughters faces. “God’s timing is perfect.” Meanwhile, at the other end of Paulik Place, the Fripp/Harbor House is being built for Angela Legree and her four children, Johnisha, John, Jr., Andrew and Angel. Legree has gone down her own road to find perfect timing. “I wanted a place of my own, and my mother-in-law told me about the Habitat program,” she said. At the time, Legree and her four children were living with family, cramped into the confines of a three-bedroom mobile home. She earnestly looked forward to the day when her children could have a space of their own. Legree has worked at the McDonald’s on Lady’s Island for nine years, currently serving as Assistant Manager. She has enjoyed working on the job site and enlisting the aid of numerous friends and family to help complete sweat equity requirements. “The best thing is I have learned to understand and become a people-person, so I can better help other people in need.” Spring 2011 Vol. 8, No. 1 Our Mission In response to God’s love, LowCountry Habitat for Humanity creates long-term partnerships to build and renovate affordable housing with volunteers and responsible families in need.

Seeing Weber’s excitement about the program, Redd decided to attend an orientation session and soon found herself, along with her daughters Romia and Jessica, as one of the families selected to go through the process of owning a

Habitat home. At the time, Legree and her four children were living with family,

cramped into the confines of a three-bedroom mobile home. “The best thing is I have learned to understand and become a people-person, so I can better help other people in need.”

Our work at Penn Village is progressing quickly. I can’t thank all of the dedicated volunteers enough for recognizing our need to meet a grant deadline and really stepping up to help—many coming weekly and some coming out more often. Your commitment to this project has been phenomenal. Our Board knew the timeframe for this grant would be challenging, but we always had faith that workers would come. Our first three houses at Penn Village will be transferred to families by the end of April. And, I’m pleased to announce that the fourth house at Penn will be our second Women Build. Barbara Krakehl has agreed to lead this effort and many of the women who helped on our first WB are back to raise funds for this house for Sabrina Gardner and her family. And, where do we go from Penn Village? Well, we’ll be heading back into the City. Local churches are joining together once again—this time to aptly sponsor a house

on Church Street. The fundraising kicked off with an uplifting musical performance of the Voices of Victory Choir from Bethesda Christian Fellowship and Sea Island Presbyterian’s Kirk Choir. What a beautiful afternoon—great weather, music and fellowship. And from there, we’ll be building for the first time in the Pigeon Point neighborhood, where we’ve purchased property that will be divided into lots for two houses. Our intent is for one of these to be a Veteran’s House, sponsored and built by active military and veterans. Thank you to all who have lent a hand in this ambitious year, whether you made a donation, helped select or support our families, volunteered in our ReStore, hammered at the jobsite and/or kept us in your prayers. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,

Volunteer Spotlight Gary Bull. A familiar face on the jobsite and in the of-fice, Gary Bull has been volunteering with LowCountry Habitat since attending a volunteer orientation session in early 2010. After retiring in 2009 and moving from San Francisco to Bluffton, Gary quickly put his career as a

risk advisor in global retail for the world’s largest insurance broker to good use by agreeing to serve on LowCountry Habitat’s Finance Committee. He has also logged in numerous hours on the jobsite at Penn Vil-lage and Shell Point, where he has learned new skills and made many new friendships. What he most enjoys, he said, is “the satisfaction of helping a fam-ily get a home.”

CHURCH BUILD Progress is moving forward on the fundraising front for our first Church Build since the Faith House in 2008. A kickoff event was held in the form of a joint concert by the choirs of Bethesda Fellowship and Sea Island Presbyterian on Febru-ary 13th.

Coming up on April 9th there will be a chili cook-off fund-raiser at St. Johns Lutheran Church on Lady’s Island, in which chili cooks of all church congregations and faith or-ganizations in Beaufort are encouraged to participate. All proceeds will benefit the LowCountry Habitat Church
