It is the mission of the Foundation to enrich the lives of children and with the support of credit unions, its employees and its members, we are making a lasting investment in our communities. This monthly newsletter will serve as your source for Foundation information and philanthropic credit union news. You are encouraged to share this with others. May 2016 President’s Message: Volunteer and Help Deliver More Smiles! In my first six months, I have spent numerous hours with Victory Junction’s Reach team in Ronald McDonald Houses and children’s hospitals. Imust say that this experience left me with so many emotions. Now credit union employees are able to make an impact by spending time after work in local Ronald McDonald Houses to assist Victory Junction’s Reach team with “camp day” activities. After a recent Reach camp day, Turbine FCU’s Kerri Smith (pictured far right below) commented on our Facebook post, saying “I cannot express how much these families inspired me! It was so much fun and a great way to make a difference in the lives of people that are going through some of the toughest times anyone can experience.” The Foundation’s commitment to Victory Junction’s Reach program is truly making a difference in the lives of families across the Carolinas, and, most importantly, is making children smile. Since our partnership began in 2015, the Reach team has served more than 5,750 children. Their stories will touch your heart. I will leave you with one from Jonathan Lemmon, the Reach Program Director: A child with end stage cancer was a long-term participant for the Reach team over the past year or so. This child was removed from her home and therefore was often in the hospital either alone or with a state provided “sitter”. Essentially, this patient was dying alone. The Reach team was able to not only provide this child with activities to take her mind off of her reality for a few moments, but was able to provide her with consistent friendly interactions. The Reach team was there with her in her final moments on earth. Reach has become more than simply a team providing fun camp activities…it has become an entity of comfort and consistency. Drum Roll Please: New Logo Unveiling In true cooperative spirit, the talented marketing team at Local Government Federal Credit Union designed a newlogo that exemplifies the support and care that the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation provides the credit union community in North and South Carolina. Philanthropy is the centerpiece of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation’s mission. For more than twenty years, the Foundation has built a caring reputation for giving back to the community and providing charitable support to credit unions. The Foundation’s continuous commitment to giving is represented in this new logo with the hand illustration defining a heart. You are the Foundation's partner in philanthropy, and together we will: Enrich the lives of children in the Carolinas Manage scholarship programs Provide professional development grants Aid in disaster relief Award our credit union heroes Leverage our commitment to social responsiblity Collaborate to build individual credit union foundations League Annual Meeting to Highlight Foundation Each year, the credit union system in the Carolinas looks forward to the League's premier event for professional development and networking. For this year's Annual Meeting, the Foundation has joined efforts with the League to host a silent auction during the Exhibit Hall and offer a raffle for a weekend vacation at Kingston Plantation. With the generous support of many of the Exhibit Hall vendors, the Foundation will have fantastic items for the silent auction including Go Pro cameras and Yeti coolers! All the proceeds raised at the Annual Meeting will support our exclusive partnership with Victory Junction for the Reach program. CUaware Midlands Builds Birdhouses for Local Children's Hospitals Through Reach The Midlands chapter of CUaware recently partnered with the Foundation for a workshop social to benefit the Reach program. The event took place at the League's headquarters in Irmo, SC, on May 5th. During the event, attendees from several area credit unions, as well as representatives of the League, the Foundation and Victory Junction gathered together for a night of fun, fellowship, and support of this great community initiative. Attendees worked collaboratively - in true cooperative spirit - to build wooded birdhouses for patients at the local children's hospital served by the Reach program. Children will soon enjoy painting the birdhouses during Reach team visits. The event raised nearly $400 from individual tax-deductible donations received from the participants. Habitat Volunteers Needed The SECUFoundation and Habitat for Humanity® of North Carolina are working on a joint initiative to expand affordable housing across North Carolina–the SECU Habitat Mountains to the Sea Challenge. SECU Foundation’s Challenge will provide a significant investment of $10 million over a three year period for Habitat to build one new (or thoroughly renovated) home in each of the State’s 100 counties. As with allhomes built by Habitat for Humanity, it’s the volunteers that make it possible. The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has been approached by Habitat in an effort to seek credit union volunteers for not only the construction sites, but also for reading credit reports, providing credit counseling and preparing families for homeownership and home budgeting. If you would be interested in assisting your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, please let me know. A list of upcoming volunteer events can be found here.
