June Competition

- -

Welcome to our June issue.

I’ve been working away in the background for some time now. Supporting my wonderful team. Producing the 204 Calendar. Creating a new website. And of course looking after my beautiful, magical, little ray of sunshine ... daughter Cariad! Right now I have a great balance between work and spending time with my baby girl. Motherhood really is fine and dandy.

Anyway enough about me! I hope you’ll agree we have a great issue for you.

I want to draw your attention to the Summer Fayre advertised on Page 2; it’s very early on in the month so take a look at the advert details and see if it appeals to you.

I must say the Beer and Chilli Festival on the front cover looks very tempting. I’m not one for eating chillis but watching any participants could be very entertaining!

As in each month, we have a few new advertisers on board. Be sure to check them out and use their services if you need them.

If you haven’t seen the Photography Competition results on our Facebook Page, go to page 26 to see this years winners. The standard is magnificent. Next year’s calendar is exceptional.

Thank you to everyone who has attended our Car Boot Sales at Hay Primary School. Whether it be as a seller or buyer. Roll on the rest of the season. Fingers crossed to some dry and hot weather!

Last of all, we are recruiting! Although we are looking for a freelance Sales Executive, the successful applicant doesn’t need to have any selling experience as we have a very relaxed approach. He or she needs to be reliable, have a workstation at home, be in touch with the local community and overall just a fun personality! Interested? Please send your CV, or any questions about the role to [email protected] by Friday 28th June 2013.

Enjoy,

Lisa Marie Badham

News from Roger Williams MPLast week was a positive step in attaining justice for daniel Morgan and his family.

The Home Secretary, Thersea May’s announcement on Thursday to create the daniel Morgan Independent Panel will address a number of the unanswered questions following his murder in 1987. This is testament to the family’s dogged determination in taking on the Metropolitan Police, exposing corruption and actual police involvement in the case.

I took on the case from my predecessor Richard Livesy when I became the Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire in 200 and have worked alongside the family to ensure the case is not swept under the carpet. In 2004 I used Parliamentary privilege to name a Policeman involved in the case, he later turning out to be one of the main murder suspects.

The Independent Panel’s finding will arguably be as ground breaking as Hillsborough in its revelations of police corruption and the protection of those responsible for the deaths of the 92. daniel’s case will go deeper, exposing

the darker, interconnected world of private investigators, police officers and journalists at the News of the World.

In fact the Panel will utilise lessons from the Hillsborough Independent Panel process in addressing how to approach its work. It will be chaired by Sir Stanley Burnton, a retired Lord Justice of the Court of Appeal, with further Panel members to be announced in the coming weeks.

Like Hillsborough, it is not going to be a quick process. The family have been badly served in the past, but I believe this time persistence and perseverance has and will pay off. It would have been easy for the family to have taken an overly emotive approach, and understandably so, but they have presented the case rationally and I believe justice will be done.

Regardless of the outcomes, the Independent Panel will highlight serious lessons for the Police to learn regarding the treatment of victim’s families and will be felt throughout the ranks. I will endeavour to pursue the case through whichever avenues I can and hope for the sake of the family, that they get the result and justice they deserve.

News from local W I sPOWYS BRECKNOCK FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTESThe annual show was held on the 3rd May at St Marys Church, Brecon. W I members arrived very early with their exhibits ready for the judging which was to commence at 0.00am. The majority of the qualified judges came from neighbouring counties, and they all had a very busy morning as there were so many entries in each class. There was 5 categories in the cookery section, Talgarth won the ginger bake bake. The best border tart, a pastry case filled with cooked dried fruits and decorated with glace icing was submitted by Merthyr Cynog W I. st prize for the box of assorted sweets was awarded to Talybont W I.There were 23 jars of marmalade to be judged. entrants were reminded that orange peel should be cooked until tender before adding sugar. Llangynidre won this class.Three Cocks succeeded in winning the best decorated sponge top with a design of a basket of flowers. Some other formats were a bowling green, Shaun the Sheep, and even a tawny lion. There were 3 craft classes. 23 tea cosies had been entered. Some hade been knitted, others made from felt and one an embroidered tepi. A few had been lined and padded. Priory W I’s green owl was considered the best. One comment made by the judges was that “there was a fun selection of cosies with original ideas that would make any tea-time a giggle. There had been an incredible range of talents displayed in the making of cot blankets, particularly in those that had been knitted or crocheted and the colourways worked in the patchwork were stunning. Cradoc’s entry was judged the finest. When it came to appraising a childs cardigan the judge found it very hard to select the winner owing th the very high standard of workmanship. st prize went to Priory W I.Artistic members were asked to paint a bowl of fruit. Llangastys superb picture showed clever interpretation, which had been convincingly painted.Weather was the theme of the photographic competition. one entry showed flags being blown in the wind, another a duel rainbow. The question was asked “did you know that the colours of the reflected rainbow are in reverse to the main rainbow”?. Libanus Photograph of a person holding an umbrella walking outside on a very wet day came first. The floral competitions attracted a good mumber of entries. Aberhonddu Angels achieved st place with an

arrangemnet in a cup and saucer. The judge thought that the “hand tied bouquet was a very difficult class to judge as all the entries were of a high standard. She felt that Libanus W I s prize winning bouquet was delightful and made good use of colour using very difficult materials. The winner of the Brecon cup floral art would represent the county at the Royal Welsh Show. This years theme was “Eastern Promise” with Three Cocks striking entry winning.9 W Is competed in the Rose bowl co-operative display. each entry had to show items of cookery, craft, floral art, with marks given for Interpretation, Staging and display.Again the theme was “Eastern Promise” with the winning W I Merthyr Cynog, who will represent Brecknock at this years Royal Welsh Show. Merthyr Cynog and Three Cocks W Is gained the highest number of points in the show with aberhonddu angels 3rd and Priory 4th.The day concluded with the presentations of trophies by County Chairman, Heulwen Parry who thanked everyone who had contributed to the success of the day.

Vivaldi: Concerto Grosso in D Minor for 2 ViolinsViolins: Laurence Kempton, Ruth Brown

Vivaldi: Flute Concerto: “Il Gardellino” Flute: Vivienne John

Purcell: Chaconne in G Minor Holst: St. Paul’s Suite Brahms: Serenade No. 1

After two winter concerts affected by bad weather, Brecknock Sinfonia can only hope that their summer concert on June 8th will be safe from snow!

A suitably seasonable programme begins with sunny Vivaldi, with leader Laurence Kempton and Ruth Brown the solo violins in the d minor Concerto Grosso and Vivienne John the soloist in the flute concerto nicknamed ‘Il Gardellino’. Purcell’s familiar G minor Chaconne precedes another popular piece for strings, Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, written by the composer for his pupils when he was a schoolteacher.

The second half is devoted to Brahms’ first major work for full orchestra, the Serenade in d. It was composed looking back at the musical forms of the previous century, but Brahms’ distinctive voice is already apparent in the memorable melodies and rich harmonies.

The conductor for this attractive concert is again the popular Michael Bell, and the growing reputation of the Brecknock Sinfonia should attract a large audience to the cathedral – weather permitting!

News from Usk House Usk House day Hospice in Brecon joined forces with St david’s Hospice care in 2010. The main reason for this was in order to start a Hospice at Home service, which has now been up and running in this area for over a year and a half. This new service has brought a huge improvement in palliative care to patients in south and mid Powys, allowing them to receive hands-on care in their own homes at the end of their lives, and to die at home if that is their choice. To date 85 patients have been cared for at home in Powys, which has amounted to over 5,000 nursing hours.

Running alongside this service, day care continues to be offered at Usk House, and our bus can regularly be seen on the roads, collecting patients. Usk House is open to patients with cancer as well as many other life threatening illnesses, and while at the hospice, patients are offered help and support

from nursing staff, art and craft sessions, a wide variety of therapies, and of course benefit from the mutual support they receive from each other.

The majority of the hospice’s funding comes from voluntary contributions – why not come along and join us at one of our events:

Bouncy BoINg!Brecon and Radnor Bouncy Hire (also widely known as BoUNcy BoING!) love to see happy people. Their castles are often seen at local shows and events where children can let off steam while the grown-ups catch their breath, or in gardens and village halls at parties.

Owners Jerry & Paula Garry don’t have much time to catch their own breath though, as they and their 2 sons are increasingly busy with the business – Paula is also a Beaver Scout leader and nurse!

Things have moved on in recent years for the Inflatable industry, and Bouncy Boing are among those who choose to move with the times and keep up with current safety guidelines.

They are members of the BIHA, a national organisation that promotes safe and sensible use of inflatables. All castles have a rigorous test every year, and receive a Health and Safety certificate of Inspection, much like an M.O.T. This, together with Public Liability Insurance, helps to maintain professional standards, and peace of mind for those who are hiring castles.

As a result of their insistence to do things properly, Bouncy Boing have regular bookings from schools, shows and event organisers, as well as an increasingly full diary of private bookings for parties and weddings. They have castles suitable for children or adults, and they also have for hire other items to help parties go with a swing, including a fantastic Cookie Monster costume, outdoor games, and space hoppers. There’s also a yamaha digital stage piano for hire!

‘Thanks to our enthusiastic and loyal customers, our business is fun and rewarding’, says Jerry. ‘It’s great to see people laughing and enjoying themselves for so little cost. Also, with so many wonderful village and church halls around, our fickle weather needn’t spoil the fun!’

For further details of castle hire and prices, take a look at the Bouncy Boing website: www.bouncyboing.co.uk

Wild in June Protectingwildlife for the future

On summer days I visit Penlan ponds behind Coleg Powys and Brecon Leisure Centre to watch dragonflies. The shallow pond by the tennis courts is best. Like me dragons and damsels prefer warm still days and are often most active in the late morning.

To see them better I take binoculars and a camera. Because of their distinctive shape and colours Broad-bodied chasers are one of the easier dragonflies to identify, and to photograph as they often use favourite perches. This is a male, the females and immature males are golden brown. Chasers are well-named as the males are territorial and fly fast after rivals and potential mates.

Their squat hairy nymphs live for between one and three years in the silt at the bottom of the pond, and feed on small water animals. Broad-bodied Chasers are widespread at suitable ponds and lakes in Brecknock and across southern Britain. At Penlan you could also see many azure damselflies, and smaller numbers of several other species. For general information, www.british-dragonflies.org.uk

is a good site, and I put some of my local sightings and pictures on the Facebook page at www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk.

Some years ago, the daily quote in the Western Mail newspaper was “There are only two good Unions, The Rugby Union and The Mothers Union”.

Anyone here in Wales can talk about Rugby – and congratulations to our Welsh Team on their success in the Six Nations. What would the average person say about The Mothers Union? – good for providing tea at Parish do’s? There is a lot more to the M.U. than that, as more than over 4 million members worldwide will testify.

In 1876 Mary Sumner, clergy wife and young mother, held a meeting for other young Wives and Mums to help them talk over problems in raising their families and to be there for one another. Other Parishes heard about it and followed suit and so the M.U. was born. In a time when few people read news sheets and with no Facebook or Twitter the idea spread. The first Branch here in Wales was set up in 1884 in Llandrindod Wells, followed by Newbridge on Wye, and in 1888 Brecon Branch; 125 years ago this year.

The aim of the Mothers Union is to support marriage and family life, and the M.U. funds many projects:

The seeds we sow – M.U. theme

Anyone wanting further information, please phone Rev. Margaret Blake on 01874 636390.

parenting classes, prison ministry, relief and development programmes – the list is endless but all aimed at helping women and their families. All money raised for the Relief Fund is distributed through dedicated M. U. workers so that it goes directly to where it is most needed.

Brecon Branch meets on the st Wednesday of the month at 2pm in the diocesan centre in the cathedral Close and welcomes new members. Although called a “Mothers Union” you do not have to be a mother to join; single, married or divorced, all are welcome. We even have a few males who have joined the M.U. Many of the clergy belong and give their support, including our own Bishop John, and our dean Geoffrey Marshall.

The M.U. theme for this year is “The Seeds we Sow”. Mary Sumner can have had no idea that the seed she sowed that afternoon in 1876 in her Vicarage sitting room would grow into a World Wide Organisation that has helped so many people.

It is always important to “shop around” when making a purchase, but never more so than when buying an annuity. An annuity is the most common way to draw an income for retirees with personal pension plans.

Six months before your chosen retirement date you will receive a “wake up pack” from your current pension provider informing you of your annuity options. By law the provider must offer you the option to exercise your “open-market option”. This means you have the right to take your built-up pension fund to another provider to get a higher annuity rate. The forms to exercise your open-market option are often found at the back of the pack after a vast array of other options. For simplicity the retiree often opts for the offered annuity with the incumbent provider. This will almost certainly result in a lower income in retirement.

depending on the annuity provider you go to, you can increase your income by up to 20% just by shopping around. If you’re not in the best of health, you may be eligible for an ‘enhanced’ annuity. These products pay better rates because the annuity providers expect to pay the annuity over a shorter period.

drawing an annuity is not the only way to release income from your pension and it worth considering other options. In any event it is never bad advice to shop around before taking the pension first offered to you.

Shop around for your annuity

Hay Does Vintage ReturnsJo and Naomi are delighted to be returning to Hay-on-Wye with an even bigger vintage event, ‘Town of Temptation’ on Sunday 30th June. This time Hay Does Vintage will be taking place in four venues, a Marquee in the Market Square, the Buttermarket, St John’s Place and the Parish Hall all within a short walk around Hay. All venues will have a huge choice of vin-tage clothes, curios and furniture.

Apart from encouraging visitors to wander be-tween the four venues, aided with their ‘Town of Temptation’ map, there will be an interactive fashion show with models styled by fashion student Lucy Scott. Like last year, the charity shops will be open on the Sunday, reserving vintage stock to sell on the day.

Naomi, of Naomi Emmanuelle Makeup, will be on hand to provide vintage makeovers in the ‘Pamper Lounge’ upstairs at St Johns Place. Get your hair, makeup and nails done then have a stunning photoshoot. There will be a number of ‘Goodness you’re Gorgeous’ goody bags for those dressed with vintage style.

Jo’s recently launched ‘Travelling Tearoom’ will be in the Marquee serving homemade cakes and pots of tea in vintage crockery along with a Traditional Sweet Shop selling your childhood favourite treats.

The success of last year’s event saw visitors and traders getting into the spirit of it all by dressing in vintage attire and travelling miles to attend. The girls hope to attract even larger crowds this year and look forward to welcom-ing you.

Two boys were arguing when the teacher entered the room. The teacher says, “Why are you arguing?” One boy answers, “We found a ten pound note and decided to give it to whoever tells the biggest lie.” “you should be ashamed of yourselves,” said the teacher, “When I was your age I didn’t even know what a lie was.” The boys gave the ten pound note to the teacher.

Hello everyone!

at the end of april daddy and I planted the veg patch. He did all the hard work. I sat and watched him and looked after the seeds and pots.

Last month I went to have my eyes tested. The ladies at the opticians in Hay were so nice. They made such a fuss of me. We went into a dark room and I got to look at all sorts of pictures and different lights. At the end the nice lady Felicity told us that I was fine and had nothing to worry about at all. And guess what, it didn’t cost Mummy a penny! Children up to the age of 6, and those who are in full time education can have their eyes tested for free. Felicity had a big belly, a baby inside Mummy says. I wonder if the baby has arrived yet ...

during Talgarth Walking Festival weekend we walked up to Pwll-y-Wrach waterfalls. James picked lots of wild garlic to put in a salad for tea.

I went to the Play Barn with my big cousins, Charlotte, William and George. It was my first time. Wow there’s a mega huge slide there. I liked it in the infant area playing with the balls. There was lots of other children and grown ups that we knew there. I can’t wait to go again.
