To our July issue.

We’ll start with some exciting news, we are looking for an Apprentice or Trainee to join our team. At 16 years of age I left High School and wasn’t really sure what I was going to do. Luckily for me there was a placement at Freestyle Print Shop. Without owner Roy and work colleague Claire, I can hand on heart say I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for them. The role we are offering will be very varied and for the right applicant there are design and writing opportunities as well as the day to day admin. I will consider a part-time SVJYPPXMQITSWMXMSR¯MXEPPGSQIWHS[RXS½RHMRKthe right applicant. Please turn to page 2 for more information.

Last week saw the Queen’s Speech in Parliament, which set out the Government’s plans for the upcoming year. Some of the much welcomed proposals included direct elections to National Parks, investment in infrastructure and help for smaller businesses.

I welcomed the news that people living in National Parks [SYPH½REPP]LEZIEWE]SZIVXLITISTPI[LSVITVIWIRXthem. As the former Chairman of Brecon Beacons National Park, I know how important it is that people have a democratic voice over issues which affect them. While this Bill only refers to England, I hope that with England and Scotland both holding direct elections to their National Park Authorities that Wales will soon follow with the help of my colleagues in the Welsh Assembly.

I also welcomed the announcement that from 2016, all new homes will be required to meet a zero-carbon standard. However, I raised my concerns that this would not help those in older homes. As many people in our communities live in older builds, the issue of rural fuel poverty is a serious one. Building

News from Roger Williams MPon the Government’s Green Deal to improve homes through insulation would help bring down energy costs, help keep homes warmer and have major LIEPXL ERH IRZMVSRQIRXEP FIRI½XW'VIEXMRK LSQIWcapable of keeping people warm and healthy is the most vital infrastructure investment we can make.

I was concerned that no mention was made of a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses, despite Government support. Almost all of the major animal welfare organisations support a complete ban, and given the widespread support for this move, it is about time that the Government make good on their promise.

Finally, there is widespread support for the creation of a new body to look after our forests and woodlands, recognising their importance for leisure, for timber and for our local economies. The Government agreed to do this, yet legislation has yet to materialise. With our forests estimated to produce annual returns on investment of around £400 million, we must ensure that action is taken to protect our forests for generations to come.

You may have seen a swarm of honey bees already this summer and wondered what was going on – or what, if anything, to do about it.

People often confuse bees with wasps and hornets, FYXSRP]LSRI]FIIWW[EVQ¾]MRKSYXXSKIXLIVMRXLIMVthousands, simply looking for a new home. Individual honey bees are mostly dark and though they may have some light-coloured banding on their abdomens, they’re not bright black (or red brown) and yellow, like wasps or hornets. Honey bees are also quite furry, unlike wasps, [LMPIRSXFIMRKVSYRHERH¾YJJ]PMOIFYQFPIFIIW

Both honey bees and wasps can set up home in buildings, and under roofs. If a swarm’s been in one place for some days, the bees may start building honey comb out of wax, but most likely all you will see is just a big dark brown mass of bees. A wasps’ nest, by contrast, is papery – like a multilayered paper lantern.

A cluster or cloud of thousands of bees might look alarming to us, especially in the air, but swarming’s a normal matter for the bees. It’s just part of the way they reproduce.

Swarming usually happens in good weather in late spring or summer, when a healthy colony of bees is strong IRSYKLXSHMZMHI-XWIPJ8LIUYIIRFII[MPP¾]SYXJVSQhome with part of her colony to go househunting. The FIIW [MPP LEZI IEXIR TPIRX] SJ LSRI] ½VWX XS WYWXEMRthem for the move. The swarm will settle somewhere – perhaps in a tree or hedge – while scout bees look for a WYMXEFPIRI[LSQI-JXLIFIIWEVIPYGO]XLI] PPUYMGOP]½RHa good new cavity to move into.

Meanwhile, among the bees who’ve been left behind in their old home by the swarm, worker bees – the queen’s daughters – will have been bringing on a new young queen who’ll develop from one of the eggs laid by their departing mother. After she emerges from her cell, this ]SYRKZMVKMRUYIIR[MPP¾]SYXXSQEXIFIJSVIVIXYVRMRKto lay eggs and continue the original colony, in its old home, with her own young.

In an ideal world, we’d maybe just leave honey bees to their own devices to swarm naturally. But outside many ELMZIMRXLIWTVMRKERHWYQQIV]SY PP½RHEFIIOIITIVwishing they knew exactly what was going on inside it.

(Preparations for swarming go on for weeks before the swarm appears.) Trying to anticipate swarming preoccupies beekeepers – a lot.

Why? Well, a swarm may try to set up home somewhere unsuitable for the bees themselves or where it’s a problem for people. Many beekeepers will fear for the survival of the swarm itself. Most of us don’t live in places with lots of ideal secluded homes for bees, such as in old trees. Swarms may perish, or need help, in many areas now that XLIVIWFIIRWYGLEPSWWSJREXYVEPLEFMXEXJSVXLI¾S[IVWon which they feed. Besides this, many beekeepers hope to hive their own swarming bees and so increase their stock. And a beekeeper whose livelihood depends on honey won’t want to see prospects of a good honey crop disappearing along with the bees.

So most beekeepers will try to catch and re-home swarms, or pre-empt swarming altogether in their own ETMEVMIWF]HMZMHMRKXLIMVWXVSRKGSPSRMIW½VWX8LI]QE]also set out tempting ‘bait hives’ in which they hope swarms will settle.

If you think you have a swarm (or a colony of honey bees already living in a problematic place) please contact Peter Bustin (Brecknock and Radnor Beekeepers’ Association Swarm Liaison) on 01874 690445 for advice as soon as ]SYGER(SR´XETTVSEGLXLIW[EVQSVXV]XSMR¾YIRGIit in any way. If possible the bees will be collected and re-homed somewhere safe. It’s important this happens quickly, before the swarm settles somewhere where it can’t be reached, or where the bees may not survive.

I moved back to South Wales in January 2007 following a 7 year stint in various other parts of our Wonderful Country working on Outdoor Education Centres. When I came home I realised that I had never spent much time out in our very own wilderness, the Brecon Beacons National Park, and what a place it is!

Over the last 7 years I have taken almost every opportunity to venture out into its wilds and explore the many hills, valleys, mountains, rivers and woods that it has XSSJJIV-XMWXLI½VWXTPEGI-KSXSJSVEFMXSJTIEGISJUYMIXand a great place for me to unwind after a stressful week at work. The National Park holds some special memories JSVQIEPWS-LEHQ]½VWXOMWW[MXLQ][MJISRXSTSJ4IRY Fan in the middle of a storm!

This got me thinking, if our National Park holds such special meaning to me, having only been around it for the last 7 years, I wonder what it means to other people! I have an idea that I would like your help with – If you

have a story about the Brecon Beacons National Park of how it has helped you in some way, or maybe how you have helped it by volunteering etc then I would really like to know. My idea is to photograph you in the place that holds meaning to you, doing an activity that relates to your story, be it running, sitting, walking, climbing or just standing staring and then spend some time with you over a coffee and listening to and writing down your inspiring story!

If you would like more information on this then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me on either 07753 215277 or [email protected]. If you would like to have a look at any my photographs, I can be found on Facebook under Photographs by Grant or I would be happy to email you some. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope to hear from you soon!

British workers are putting almost three times as much into their pensions as they were eight years ago and the number of people saving for retirement has reached its highest level since 2009.

More than half of adults, 53 per cent, are now saving towards their retirement compared to just 45 per cent last year, with Scottish Widows’ Retirement Report crediting automatic enrolment with playing a key role in boosting pension participation.

The average contribution is now £130 per month up from £54 in 2006, and the amount people hold in savings and investments is at an all-time high of £40,000 per person.

The report found that automatic enrolment, which sees workers aged over 22 automatically placed into pension plans, is not only increasing participation in retirement saving, but also the amount being put aside.

It was originally predicted by the press that a huge 30 per cent of employees would opt-out of being EYXSIRVSPPIH¯ XLI½KYVILEWFIIRGPSWIV XSper cent. The report suggests the high uptake rates have a few contributory factors – workers starting to see the importance of saving for retirement from an early age, the upturn in the economy and greater feelings of job security.

While saving levels are improving, the report also found there is still a large gap between what income people want to have in retirement, and what they’ll actually get. It was recommended that the workforce should be saving at least 10 per cent of earnings from an early age to build-up a suitable nest egg for retirement.

Wild in July Protectingwildlife for the future

“I couldn’t believe it!” she said. “When the bride GEQI SYX SJ GLYVGL E LYQQMRKFMVH ¾I[ YT XS LIVbouquet”. I couldn’t believe it either and explained that hummingbirds do not occur wild in Britain and what she had seen was a moth. When a Hummingbird Hawkmoth hovers the wings are a blur and the long XSRKYITVSFMRKMRXSE¾S[IVGERPSSOPMOIEFMVHWFMPP-RItaly these moths are said to bring good tidings so I hope the marriage has been a happy one.

Apart from a few which hibernate in south-west England, Hummingbird Hawkmoths are immigrants. Most arrive in August and September but warm southerly weather brings some here earlier. When I took this photo in Brecon on 12th June people elsewhere were reporting them and other migrant insects to www.atropos.info. They are not seen often in mid-Wales but worth looking for after this early start. Red Valerian shown here, Buddleia and Phlox are favourite nectar sources.

If you do see one, you could report it to the excellent

new website of the Biodiversity Information Service, www.b-i-s.org, where there is a great deal of information about local wildlife.

Last month St Mary’s Church in Brecon invited me to come along and check out the refreshments and facilities at the Church Café. I asked my sister and her little boy to accompany Cariad and me.

For those who don’t know, the Church is in the very centre of Brecon Town. You can enter from both sides, one with steps and the other entrance has a ramp – nice and easy for people with pushchairs or [LIIPGLEMVW8LI½VWXXLMRK]SY´PPRSXMGISRIRXIVMRKthe Church is the space, it’s vast and full of light, made possible by the glorious stained glass windows and high ceilings with handcrafted wooden beams. %XXLI'EJqGSYRXIV]SY[MPP½RHEPEVKIWIPIGXMSRSJcakes on display, all locally made. Cariad spotted the chocolate brownie, so that was her order. Cousin George opted for a Gingerbread Man. Aunty Dee took a fancy to the carrot cake and I couldn’t resist a scone with clotted cream and jam. Both Dee and I decided to accompany our cakes with a Latte each. If looking for lunch, the menu consists of Paninis, rolls, salads and a soup of the day which is freshly made everyday. All very reasonably priced.

We decided to sit near the playing area. Over the years the play area has grown due to its constant use by little ones. They have cleverly installed a fence around this area, meaning the children are safe and

secure. I personally love this idea. I remember when 'EVMEH[EWNYWXWXEVXMRKXS³FYQWLYJ¾I´[LMPWXZIV]cute looking it meant I needed to have eyes in the back of my head and be quick to dart after her if WLIHIGMHIHXSQEOIE³WLYJ¾I JSVMX8LMWTPE]EVIEmeans mum, dad or grandparents can chill and enjoy their refreshments whilst seeing the little ones exploring the new toys on offer.

After a little play, both children decided to come and tuck into their cakes. Dee’s cake was delicious, light and very tasty. My scone was freshly made and accompanied with the clotted cream and strawberry jam, it was divine. All washed down with some super tasting coffee. It was a hugely enjoyable morning, if the children weren’t at the table eating they were in the play pen playing happily. Other parents were there with their children, it was great to see pushchairs up near tables without being in anyone elses way. The changing facilities were fab, a toilet and basin within the same cubicle as the changing table and they even provide nappy sacks. As trivial as this sounds, it makes the world of difference, especially to new parents – it GERFIEFMXHEYRXMRK[LIR]SY½VWXWXEVXXSKSSYXwith your new baby.

You may like to visit the Church Café child free, don’t worry it’s also possible to get some peace and quiet as

St Marys Church would really love to meet you! We would like to encourage more families to our Church and would like to know how we can make ourselves more accessible to you? We know that everybody is really busy and want to offer more opportunities for families – would a different time or even day suit you? A club for children suited to different age groups? Perhaps somewhere for parents with facilities for your babies & toddlers?

Please take a minute to let us know your very valuable ideas. You can email us, contact us through on Facebook ‘The Parish Church of St Mary, Brecon’, email: [email protected] or just drop into the Tower Café on any day where we will leave a suggestion box and you could enjoy a coffee whilst your children have fun in our play area!

Calling all families in Brecon!

What can WE do for you?

you can seat yourself at the opposite end to the play area. During our visit there were many people sitting down enjoying a read of the newspaper. Outside seating is also available. It is clear that they cater for everyone.

St Mary’s is a Church with a Café. Not a Café with a Church. On Tuesdays there is a 11.30am Service; on Fridays there are Midday Prayers. All these are run whilst the Café is open. On Sundays there is the Sunday Service at 9.30am and a Time Out Service at 11.30am. The huge space means that Services continue as they would do like any other Church. They even prepare a colouring area on a Sunday to keep little ones entertained so their grown-ups can focus on the Service. Keep your eye out for concerts throughout the year.

St Mary’s you get thumbs up from the Badham ERH+VMJ½XLWJEQMP]8LERO]SYJSVEQSWXIRNS]EFPImorning and we’ll be back to sample your lunch menu soon.

After graduating from university in 2010 and subsequently working in London for 2 years, Ben then joined Beacon IFA in April 2012. Although he was born in London his family moved to Abergavenny when Ben was 4 months’ old. Since then they have always lived within the Brecon Beacons. Ben went to Llangattock Primary School and Crickhowell High School.

BRECON Poets:

Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to [email protected] and not directly to the Local Beacon.

Each issue of your Local Beacon now carries a short piece by a local poet. This month’s poem is by Patrick Dobbs who left school to work on an Exmoor farm before reading for a degree in Agriculture. On graduation, he went to Canada and was a colt-breaker on the short-grass prairie, a mill-hand in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and a cattle drover in the Ontario stockyards. Patrick then had a two year contract at a Guyanese sugar plantation before using his accumulated savings to buy a small mountain farm in the Brecon Beacons where he has lived for over half a century. In XLI W ERH W LI [EW E TVSPM½G [VMXIV ERHbroadcaster mainly but not exclusively on farming and countryside matters.

PATRICK DOBBS

The DreamThey came from rickyards, factories and minesAnd met in furtive groups, now here, now there,Beneath a sycamore, the back room of a pub,The chapel vestry or a private house. They knew the penury of working folk,But they knew too their days would surely come,The days of bread for all and roses too,Sure in the faith, more Methodist than Marx. They had them all, their heroes, saints and scholars,Tom Paine and Robert Owen, Dic Penderyn,Shaw, Wells, the Webbs, the Rochdale Pioneers. But their tomorrow is our yesterday. The Mayor of Merthyr in his civic robes,The tribune of a people deep in debt,Reminds us of what once we might have been. The coal and quarry ownder, factory boss,Upstaged by an outsourced contractor withHis mobile phone and offshore bank account. And they, who promised us so much, are justThe fading memory of a broken dream.
