Orchestra StringsBrecknock Sinfonia’s January concert features its excellent string section in an attractive selection of lighter music. Popular conductor Michael Bell is again in charge, with Laurence Kempton leading the orchestra. The programme includes some much loved music for strings but opens with a rarely performed piece by Sibelius, the Andante Festivo. The normally gloomy Finn is seen here in a more relaxed mood. Percy Grainger’s ‘Molly on the Shore’ is a typically quirky and jovial arrangement of a folk tune. Even by Bach’s standards the Concerto for Two Violins is simply sublime, one of the greatest works ever written for the instrument. For this performance Laurence Kempton is joined by his gifted teenage son Elliot in the solo parts. One of the classics for string orchestra, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, concludes the concert in the composer’s expansive style. Brecknock Sinfonia’s recent performances have been drawing enthusiastic responses from their audiences. Come and enjoy high quality approachable classical music from leading professional players and talented amateurs from across South Wales and the Marches!

Brecon Speakers Club is again up and running. On Monday 6th January there will be a Debate on the motion THAT MUSIC IS THE FOOD OF LOVE. This is a competition debate with Brecon’s speakers contesting in fierce verbal conflict with teams from Cardiff and Newport.

It is at 7.30 pm at the Three Horseshoes in Llanfaes and visitors are most welcome.

Other activities are planned throughout 2014 including a training workshop and entry into area, district and national contests (in which we have performed well in the past). The club also supplies speakers to local group and offers coaching sessions to schools and other organisations.

Persons interested in improving their speaking and listening skills are invited to come along to the debate.

It seems anything can be insured these days. Real Madrid reportedly insured Ronaldo’s legs for £80m for fear of him being tackled. And Jennifer Lopez also famously insured another body part for a similar sum. These are extreme examples but it is surprising how often most people overlook their own protection needs, especially in the event of death or critical illness. There are some who would spend £30 per month on protecting the family Labrador before a family member.

Most people are familiar with the concept of life assurance or life cover as it is more commonly known. On death a tax-free lump sum is paid out to the insured’s family. The payment is usually used to clear an existing liability such as a mortgage or to provide for other on-going financial commitments during a difficult period.

Most people pay for their life assurance out of taxed income, but owners of limited companies have the option of taking out what is known as a “Relevant Life Plan”. These plans are set-up by the Company to insure the lives of the employees. In the case of family businesses this usually includes the owners. Unlike traditional policies the premiums attract Corporation Tax relief, providing a minimum cost saving of 20%. Any payment is made directly to the family without tax being deducted. The maximum level of cover is twenty times the employee’s salary. Life cover or critical illness cover (or a combination of the two) can be included.

Protection does not need to be limited to the needs of the super rich.

How business owners can save tax on their life assurance

Wild in January Protectingwildlife for the future

It is a dark and frosty night. Soon after sunset owls hoot and then you hear yelps and wailing barks or even screams. Not right for dogs, these eery noises sound like cries of pain. Foxes are calling to each other. This is mating time, females come into season for three weeks and are fertile for just three days. Soon a vixen will find a den for the litter of usually five cubs due in seven to eight weeks.

Foxes are most active at night, hunting for their favourite voles or rabbits, or scratching up earthworms. A few weeks ago they were scrumping blackberries.

Brecknock Wildlife Trust with funding from The Co-operative seeks your help to find out more about foxes and other mammals in our area. If you hear or see any, please let the Trust know what, where and when. There is a survey sheet with pictures and tick boxes linked from the home page of the website, www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk, or from the Office in Lion House, Bethel Square, 01874 625708. In the Events Diary there are details of Mammal Discovery days at February half-term. Article by Steph Coates andKeith Noble

Each issue of your Local Beacon now carries a short piece by a local poet. This month’s poem is by Helena Jones, a sprightly 97-year-old who has been a teacher and a farmer and is now a keen gardener, and Air Ambulance shop volunteer. A few years ago, Helena taught herself Welsh and has since competed at eisteddfodau; she is active in choral singing, drama, the Women’s Institute, Brecon Speakers Club, the Political and Theological Discussion Group and Brecon Poets.

BReCON Poets:HELEnA JonEs

Contributions from local poets are invited. These should be no more than 24 lines in length and accompanied by two or three succinct sentences about the poet. They should please be emailed to [email protected] and not directly to the Local Beacon.

PoVERTYWhat means this Poverty? To me? To you?I browse through pages of a myriad books – But what of children still to learn the joysOf reading? Starved of Bible – printed page?

Our schools have open doors for searching mindsAnd knowledge blares from screens and radio wavesBut many baked and sun-drenched homes, abroad,Know well the poverty – the lack of schools.

Fresh waters freely flow in Britain’s streams. Our grass and trees, our precious crops grow green,But blatant poverty exists in lands where menAnd beasts are hurt through lack of rain.

And, sadly, poverty and plenty dwellToo often side by side. The young may flauntTheir earnings. Spend and spend on drink and drugsWhile lonely seniors freeze and long for warmth.

Sad love-starved souls – no friends nor visitors – Who shrivel in their poverty – unloved! While idle rich enjoy the freedom, prizedBy wealth – and never ask “What’s Poverty?”

News from local W I sBRECKnoCK FEdERATIon oF WoMEn’s InsTITuTEs

Powys Brecknock Federation has organised a variety of events recently. The Harvest Supper was a great success, the home made food being served by members of the board of Trustees. Morrisons PLC very kindly allowed members to “bag-pack” in the Brecon store enabling funds to be raised for the Federation.

The Federation supported “White Ribbon Day” with a service held at Brecon Cathedral.

Rose Morris organised a shopping trip to Birmingham where a “German Christmas Market” was being held. Shopping with a difference!

The exceptionally well attended Bingo Evening was held at Bishops Meadow, with the caller Gomer Probert, ably assisted by his wife Lynda.

On the first Sunday in December a Carol Service was held in Callwen Church, Glyntawe. The vicar and organist was the Rev. Allan Brookfield. The President of Abergrave W.I, Mrs Jane Pugh welcomed everyone to the service. Members read extracts from the Bible, also poetry with a Christmas theme. The choir conducted by Jennifer Thomas sang two carols, and Llangynidr W.I sang one, the accompanist was Linda Games.

Several members competed at the RWS Winter Fair, with Lizzie Stephens being awarded third prize for her floral arrangement.

The Federation and many W.Is decorated Christmas trees which formed part of the display at Brecon Cathedral.

As usual our Christmas Fair was well supported. Items for the various stalls and raffle had been donated by the Federation members. Crickhowell W.I was responsible for making teas and coffee.

The W.I year concluded with a mulled wine and mince pies morning. A warming end to the years activities.
