As the economy improves it is important that ordinary people of this country feel the benefits. In one respect they do. Unemployment has fallen so it is now under 7% across the UK and in Wales it has fallen the most. The number of people on job seeker’s allowance in Brecon and Radnorshire has fallen from 095 to 654 since 200. In the last year alone job seekers between the age of 8 till 24 have fallen by 70 to 195. But of course these figures are still too high and for every person who is desperately seeking employment it is a personal tragedy.

The Welsh Assembly Government and the Department of Work and Pensions are working well together to bear down on unemployment. It is a good example of how devolution should and does work for the benefit of the people of Wales.

In one respect people are not feeling the effects of an improving economy. Over the last six years the economy has remained broadly flat and we are only just returning to 2008 levels of activity. Incomes have

News from Roger Williams MPbeen frozen or only increased by small amounts, but prices have continued to rise. So households are still feeling the pinch. As the economy continues to grow so wages and salaries should outpace inflation, which is the norm for the British economy. Having more people in employment means more people will be able to meet their household costs.

Brecon and Radnorshire has always had more self employed people as a percentage of the work force than any other constituency in the UK. Statistics show that more people are going into self-employment and sometimes their incomes are lower than they would be if they were working for someone else. Having been self-employed for a large part of my life, I can understand that being your own boss can sometimes be difficult. But in the long run it can lead to many advantages. I shall be calling on the Government to support people who have set up new businesses, so that they can grow and employ people themselves.

Orchestral music for a summer eveningBrecknock Sinfonia perform three well loved classics for their final concert of the 2013/14 season in Brecon Cathedral on Saturday June 4th.

Rossini’s most famous overture, for his opera ‘William Tell’, opens the concert. Everyone knows the ‘Lone Ranger’ trumpet call to galloping action but the piece has quieter, more lyrical moments as well. Edvard Grieg’s incidental music to Norway’s national epic drama ‘Peer Gynt’ then follows. Grieg wrote two suites of music to Ibsen’s play which have enjoyed enduring popularity. ‘’Morning’, ‘The Hall of the Mountain King’ and ‘Solveig’s Song’ have become recognised as the musical essence of Norway.

The concert concludes much closer to home. Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’ have become a cornerstone of the British national identity. Written when the composer was living in Hereford, the variations represent the characters of Elgar’s friends. The ‘enigma’ is that we never hear the theme on which the variations are based, a musical puzzle that has kept scholars busy for a hundred years.

This promises to be a fitting finale to the orchestra’s season, which has delighted audiences with the quality and style of its performances. Tickets are available on the door and the concert begins at 7.30pm.

House purchase lending fell for the third month in a row in April as lenders introduced tougher regulation which makes it harder for potential homebuyers to obtain a mortgage.

Under the Mortgage Market Review MMR, lenders have to probe borrowers’ finances much more stringently to determine whether they can afford the mortgage if interest rates shot up. The rules were laid out by the Financial Conduct Authority and came into force in April but many lenders had started to implement them before that.

It has been hyped by the media that some borrowers have been refused a mortgage for spending too much on items such as their pets and haircuts. With the lenders being able to implement the new rules at their discretion it seems some are taking a very tough stance on affordability. This may reverse in the future as the rules bed in but for the time being some borrowers are being rejected a mortgage on trivial grounds.

MMR is not the only regulation putting the brakes on lending. The Bank of England are increasing stress testing of the top eight lenders, to make certain they can withstand a 35 per cent fall in house prices – making them more resilient to any future financial problems. This means the banks will need to build capital buffers, which may result in a further lending slowdown in the short-term.

The recent increased regulation of the mortgage market will ultimately make it harder to secure a mortgage. The borrowers worst hit will be those looking to maximise the amount borrowed and those with smaller deposits.

Homebuyer mortgages drop 6% in a month - tough new rules

Who do you think they are?‘Who Do You Think They Are?’ is a free exhibition at Brecon Library which challenges visitors’ memories of local people and events.

For fifty years Jack Clark took photographs and used a studio which he built on the top floor of 13 High Street. Many of his landscapes were sold as postcards for tourists. Now the Clark family has kindly given permission to the Breconshire Local & Family History Society to create this historic exhibition.

Many of the photographs taken by Jack Clark include portraits of individuals and groups. They also feature occasions large and small from family weddings to a royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary.

But here’s the mystery. The lovely pictures have no names on their backs, so can you recognise these local people and fill in their histories? If you find

members of your family you will be able to write something about them.

‘Who Do You Think They Are?’ is upstairs at Brecon Library from Saturday 7th to Saturday 2st June free of charge during opening hours. The fascinating collection of photographs is supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and assistance from Brecknock Museum.

Will you find people you remember and help to record their names and stories?

Chamomile is not only my favourite herbal tea at the moment but also one of my favourite plants to have in the garden. It is lovely with its apple-scented leaves and white daisly-like flowers.

You can even grow Chamomile successfully in pots or window boxes. Pick the flowers when they are fully open and use about a teaspoon (fresh or dry) in a teapot or mug and add hot water; infuse for 3-5 minutes and strain for a homegrown healthy treat.

The essential oil form is available as well – it has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. Up to 8 drops swirled into a bath can help with those aches and pains. I have been using it in conjunction with other analgesic essential oils and can vouch that it has without doubt helped my aching back and arm muscles.

Chamomile is said to improve your skin’s appearance and calm skin sensitivity. Our silky-soft chamomile and calendula soap with infusion of chamomile tea is an aromatherapeutic everyday treat.

Wild in June Protectingwildlife for the future

For a few weeks from the end of this month Burnet moths will be flying. This one is a Six-spot Burnet taking nectar from the food plant of its caterpillar, Bird’s-foot-trefoil. My favourite place to look for moths and butterflies on sunny mid-summer days is Ty-Mawr meadows, halfway along the footpath between Llangorse lakeside and the small car park below Llangasty church.

On a fine day there may be hundreds of Burnets, some settled on flowers, purple Knapweed is a favourite, many buzzing past as red blurs. With patience you might be able to find Five-spot Burnets among their more numerous relatives. In these lovely flowery meadows there will also be many butterflies, bees and other insects.

You can find out more about Llangorse Lake at the website www.aroundllangorselake.co.uk, and a new printed guide and map is also available. As traditional meadows like those conserved at Ty-Mawr are now so scarce and intensively managed fields support little wildlife, our own gardens take on extra importance.

Brecknock Wildlife Trust will be promoting gardening for wildlife with displays and events this summer. To find out more, visit www.brecknockwildlifetrust.org.uk.

Last month Cariad and I popped along to a music class in Brecon to sing, dance and play. What’s not to love about those three things?! So with the Dolly Parton CD on during our drive into town, to get the vocals warmed up, we were both looking forward to the session ahead.

The class is held in the Old Museum, Brecon. The premises have received a huge renovation, making the space ideal for community projects, classes and meetings. Cheryl who organises the Moo Music classes gave us both a warm welcome on arrival. The room was already laid out with a selection of toys and musical instruments. A few familiar faces there for Mum and Cariad soon made friends with other little ones.

To start we all gathered in a circle, the music started, Cheryl sang and the parents and children joined in where they could. The children were in no way restricted – they could choose what they played with, they could stand where they wanted to and dance away should they feel the need. In Cariad’s case, she loves dancing. Over the last few months she’s developed some imaginative dance moves, so they come in very useful when trying to impress her new made friends! Some children chose to stay close to their mummy, others took full advantage of such a vast space. It really did depend on the character of your own child and what they felt comfortable with.

Over the 45 minutes many songs were played, Cheryl sang with the aim that children, and parents, would pick up these words as the songs became memorable to them. Each song had actions to them, some of which Cariad was copying. All songs are written by a professional songwriter and recorded by professional musicians and vocalists using real instruments. Children’s music that adults will enjoy too!

“Maggie Moo and her friends play music all day long and there are loads of songs about being down on the farm and all the animals you find there. There are songs about wild animals and pets. There are songs about journeys and travelling, and all the different types of transport we can use. There are songs to

help us learn about ourselves, and songs to help learn about the world around us. There are songs to stimulate our senses, lots of songs with actions and movements, songs to dance to, songs about music and instruments, and songs that help us count. Songs to play games to and songs about the things that we love to do. There are sing-along songs, story songs and some downright silly songs! There are songs to help us interact with our friends and meet each other and songs to help celebrate special days.” Extracted from moo-music.co.uk

Cheryl has weekly Moo Music sessions planned in Brecon and she is currently looking at other areas with an LD3 postcode. Moo Doos can also be booked for parties and events – a great way to entertain the children. Classes can often be themed giving children the chance to dress up! Moo Music really is a play session with a difference.

A huge thank you to Cheryl. It was lovely to meet you and your daughter and we will be back very, very soon.

“Hello everyone,

In April I went on holiday. I went on a air plane. JJ, my big brother came too. We played on a pirate ship that had slides, sprinkle things and lots of other little people. I went to the beach but didn’t like the sand in between my toes.

The other day I went to a Moo Music class in Brecon. My Mummy took me. We got to sing, dance and play. You can read all about it on page 2.

My Daddy and I have been busy planting vegetables. We’ve planted peas, onions, potatoes, carrots, courgettes ... A lot of them start off as tiny little seeds. Daddy says I will eat them soon. But if I eat them, I don’t think I will be full up. Good job I still have some Easter eggs left from the kind Easter bunny.

I must go now, Hay Festival is calling.

Lots of love, Cariad Mia Badham x”

Jokes of the Monthby Father & Son(Colan & James Badham)A man left for work one Friday afternoon. Instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend hunting with the boys and spending all his wages.

night, he was confronted by his very angry wife. After two hours, she stopped nagging and said: ‘How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three

“If you can sew a straight line you can conquer the world…..well perhaps not that but you can make a simple clothing similar to the ones pictured says Carol Parry. Carol is behind the beginner sewing workshops to be held at Groesffordd Village Hall in June

Carol was taught to sew by her mother who bought her a Singer hand crank sewing machine when she was 7 yrs old. Starting with making clothing for dolls she very quickly moved onto dressmaking for herself, including her own wedding dress. More recently Carol has been designing and making her own boutique line of children’s clothing ‘iZZi wiZZi’ selling both online in her Etsy shop and at local crafts markets in Queensland, Australia where she used to live. Now back in Brecon, Carol plans to realise a dream by teaching others to sew by opening the iZZi wiZZi Sewing School.

In the last few years there has been a huge renewed interest in traditional crafts. Recent shows such as ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’, which Carol just missed out appearing on, has been inspiring people to take up sewing. “Now we have many people who own their first ever machine and they are totally stuck, these are the people my workshops have been set up for” says Carol. “I can be very evangelical about sewing! It’s been a dream of mine

Beginners sewing workshops

for a long time to open my open sewing school so I can share my love of sewing with others. It’s such a great feeling when someone compliments you on something you have made and you say “Thank you, I made it myself ” Sewing has its own language and a workshop with iZZi wiZZi will teach you the lingo!

The iZZi wiZZi June workshops are aimed at complete beginners, with a maximum of 5 students per group to ensure that each student gets lots of attention. All you need is your sewing machine; everything else is covered in the fee. The classes will start with the basics – threading your machine, winding a bobbin, simple seams, hems, sewing in a straight line and then move on to using those new skills, making a simple bag to take home.

Further workshops are planned for July, where Carol plans to share her love of upcycling vintage linens, introduce simple dressmaking, tackling zips & buttonholes, sewing for children and ‘make do and mend’ classes for those of you who wish learn how to mend a seam or alter the length of a pair of trousers.

For further details on the June workshops or to book your place please email: [email protected] or phone 01874 625873. Carol is also available for individual tuition for those of you that cannot make a class.

Round the bend.

Or driving round a curve?

CRAI now and its historyCrai has a very active community with a number of traditional events organised annually as well as having several regular monthly and weekly clubs.

Each month the village hall hosts the garden club and craft club. For the more energetic there is a weekly Zumba class. On Mondays during term time there is the “Off the bus club” which has been set up in the hall for primary school children to attend once they are dropped off the bus after school.

Last year a number of gardens in the village were opened under the National Garden scheme. This year many local gardeners are preparing their gardens again ready to be opened to the public on Sunday 3th July (2-6pm) with tea served in the village hall. Last year, a treasure hunt was organised which was such a success it is to be run again this year.

With close ties to the farming community the village gathers together to celebrate the end of lambing in April as well as the end of Harvest in the Autumn. They also use Christmas as time to get together over mince pies and carols and the New Year with a Hogmanay celebration.

The hall is fully equipped to host a variety of events and has the facilities to support several sports as well as offering Internet Facilities. Bookings for the hall are through Andrena Fergusson on 0874 638027.

Crai was originally the parish of Llanilud. Crai covered most of the Great Forest of Brecknock, one of the hunting

grounds of Bernard of Newmarch. Over time the estate became the property of the Crown and at the start of the c9th, was sold to fund the Napoleonic wars. The land was purchased by John Christie, an indigo merchant who went on to develop the Brecon Forest Tramway between 82 and 825. This carried lime and later all manner of building materials up and down the valley from Castell Du in Sennybridge to Swansea. Lime was delivered to local farmers along the way who used it to improve their land. The estate was later sold to the McTurk family from Scotland whose descendants still own and run Cnewr Estate.

The tramway was to be the forerunner of the Brecon to Neath Railway built by John Dickson which ran from 863 until the 960s. This railway had a great effect on Crai as it led to the demolition, removal and rebuilding of the Church in 883 and the construction of the village centre we see today.

Crai has two places of worship and both were re-built during the 9th century. Travelling ministers had visited Llwyneaudd Farm for many years and it was on this land that the first chapel was built in 1808; it was extended in 846 when a gallery was built, and in 899 the Horeb Chapel we see today was constructed with the old one being converted into a vestry for week-night services and Sunday school.

Thank you to the Upper Usk Rural Alliance for their permission to use their publication and Carole Gledhill.

News from local WIsTRALLONG & PENPONT WI The May meeting of Trallong & Penpont WI was held in the Church Hall. Vice-president Margaret welcomed Michelle Davies of Battle. Margaret went on to congratulate those members who had gained prizes at the recent W.I. show - Barbara Jones on winning st prize with her cheese scones and Mary Robinson on gaining two 3rd prizes with her doorstop and a flower arrangement in a boot. Margaret thanked all who had entered the various competitions.

After the business was dealt with Margaret introduced the speaker – Rosemary Payne of Crai. Rosemary is a very keen gardener and during the summer months enters flowers and pot plants in no less than seven shows starting with the Royal Welsh in July and ending with Brecon Gardening Club in late September. Rosemary’s garden is 000’ above sea level, south facing but very windy – which in itself presents many challenges. She demonstrated how she pots on flowers and how she prepares pot-plants for showing, giving numerous useful tips as she went along. In her vote of thanks Mary Robinson remarked that she would take more interest in the items on display in the horticulture tent now that she has had an insight into the amount of work that goes into preparing such lovely blooms for the competitions. The competition was for a sentence on Gardening – this resulted in a win for Joy Bloss with Barbara Jones in second place. The raffle prize was given by Margaret and won by our visitor Michelle. We very much hope that Michelle will join our W.I. The tea hostesses were Margery Davies and Megan Jones. We would welcome new members of any age – meetings are held in Trallong Church Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. Just turn up – you will be welcomed with open arms.

PRIORY WI‘Twinkle, twinkle little star’. Yes, we who live this part of the world can see thousands and thousands of stars but 90% of the British population are unable to see them owing to light pollution.

Ms Ruth Coulthard of Brecon Beacons National Park came to explain the problems of light pollution in regard to stargazing and why BBNP was granted Dark Sky

“ The member deemed to have worked tirelessly for a charity was County Chairman, Margery Davies”

Reserve Status in 203. The reason why so many people in this country are unable to see the stars is because towns and cities use so much lighting at night. There are 7 Dark Sky Reserves in the whole world and BBNP was the 5th to be granted this status. BBNP promotes the understanding and enjoyment of stargazing and is encouraging all business properties to use less lighting at night. School children are encouraged to attend events studying the stars. Ms Coulthard finished by inviting members to attend stargazing events at the Mountain Centre. Helen Howe proposed the vote of thanks to the very enthusiastic speaker.

The President, Marion Carrod, thanked everyone who had made items for the Co-operative Display at the annual show. Gill Todd was congratulated on gaining full marks for the bunting and the judge had commented that Helen Howe’s doorstop displayed an exceptionally high standard of work.

Laura Newnes has a new granddaughter. Members decided to make a donation to Cancer Research Wales in memory of Gloria Jones. Ann Prytherch gave a report on the Welsh Conference recently held at Wrexham. Angels Jones thanked members for the flowers and card delivered after her return from hospital. Gill Todd was welcomed as the new treasurer. Retiring treasurer, Jean Evans, was thanked for her conscientious work over the past years. The competition for a sparkly brooch was won by Helen Howe, 2nd Liz Roberts and 3rd Mary Stockton. Julia Bussell won the raffle prize.
