Part I, Section A, Question 4

Comments

In this response, a range of symbols from the novel are identified and examined with regard to the

effect they seek to achieve. To a large extent, however, the argument it presents is unconvincing.

Some ideas are not supported by relevant examples or details from the text, notably the assertion

that the painted faces of Jack and his “tribe” suggest ugliness, and make “innocent people become

evil”. Equally dubious is the point concerning the dead airman as a symbol. No sound justification is

provided as to why it represents the lack of the rule of law, and causes the world to become barbaric.

Similarly, while Simon is a Christ-like figure in the novel, there is no clear indication in what way

or context he could be seen as a symbol, a term which often refers to an object or action that stands

for something else.

Comments

This essay demonstrates some degree of familiarity with the “The Yellow Wallpaper” and The

Painted Veil. However, its approach is descriptive rather than analytical, and there is considerable

reliance on plot recount. Ideas are also not often clearly presented or adequately developed. For

example, it is not clearly argued how Kitty has hurt herself through committing adultery in The

Painted Veil or how the narrator’s physical suffering in “The Yellow Wallpaper” “[re]presents the

freedom of a woman”.

Comments

(i)

(ii)

(iii)

Shows a very basic understanding of the poem, and repeats the same

answer. Barely legible.

Misinterprets the lines as the typical sleep-pattern of “a baby”.

Does identify the use of colloquial speech but a very flimsy discussion.

point throughout

Comments

(i) Correctly identifies days in (B) as being a metaphor for life, and in (A) as the poet’s

birthday. However, answer becomes very confused in the discussion about what is depicted

as negative and/or positive.

(ii) Selects appropriate adjectives but does not relate their use to the overall sense of disorder in

the poem.

(iii) Simply mentions literary devices without offering any understanding of how each one

contributes to an appreciation of the poem. Misspelling of ‘assonance’.

Comments

The essay aims at comparing the thematic differences between the book and the film version of The

Hobbit. However, the candidate only manages to recount the differences of the storyline of the two

texts rather than giving an analytical and critical comparison. The points of comparison are rather

superficial. The candidate could have discussed why and how several elements of the books are

missing in the film. Technical aspects of the book and film have not been covered. Discussion of the

themes is confined to storytelling rather than the metaphorical meaning. Critical insights are lacking.

Comments

This film review gives a superficial understanding of the film. The title at the beginning has not

been dealt with as the review focusses on the behaviour of two of the characters rather than

analyzing the inferiority complex as mentioned. Characterization has not been critically tackled. The

paragraphs on the use of camera angles seem isolated from the main discussion. Discussion of a few

camera shots fails to give a comprehensive review of the cinematography of the movie. Other

techniques of the film, like the use of lighting, music or editing, should have been included, too.
