Part I, Section C, Question 9
Comments
The candidate was able to identify a few types of duty. However, the discussion was often
superficial and lacking in substantive evidence from the text. Misinterpretations and questionable
assertions were also recurrent (e.g. a daughter’s duty is to get married to a wealthy man and not be a
burden to the family, Walter took Kitty to Mei Tan Fu to let her know Charlie was untrustworthy and
to ‘pull’ her ‘back’), demonstrating an inadequate understanding of the film.

Part I, Section D, Question 14
Comments
Despite the candidate’s attempts to explain why Alida Slade (‘Roman Fever’) and Julian’s mother
(‘Everything the Rises Must Converge’) are deemed the most irritating characters in the texts, her
justification was limited, lacking appropriate supporting details or examples to be convincing. It was
further weakened by flawed reasoning and sweeping generalisations (e.g. it is no good to be
arrogant because it leads to harsh punishment, and Julian’s mother’s behaviour is so irritating that
‘she makes everyone despise her’). The candidate made an attempt to compare and contrast the two
characters, but no reason was offered to illustrate why Alida is more irritating than Julian’s mother
as a person.

Section A, Question 4
Comments
(i) Answer is off-topic. Discusses the environment, characters and foreshadowing but does not
refer to any past events.
(ii) No discussion of narrative devices. Too many irrational and confusing assertions (e.g. “a
voice in the island”).

Sample 2:
Section B, Question 5
Comments
(i) Notes only one obvious difference (noise vs. silence). Points out surface level of (A);
alludes to women and immigrants in (B) without explaining symbolism.
(ii) Identifies visual images but discussion as to significance is illogical.
(iii) Techniques identified but understanding of function is very basic.

Sample 1:
Extended Essay: Is ‘The Maze Runner’ just another copy of ‘The Hunger Games’?
Comments
The task would have been a more meaningful one if the scope had been narrowed to focus on only a
few aspects. Simply comparing whether The Maze Runner is a copy of The Hunger Games is too
broad and lacks a central focus. As a result, the comparison is often very superficial, like ‘Katniss is
female and Thomas is male’. The paragraph on Characters is also weak as the concept of
characterisation does not seem to have been understood or illustrated. The division of the essay into
several headings only leads to a brief description of tone, conflicts, etc.

Sample 2:
Extended Essay: The essence of true love in The Wicker Husband and The Lady, or the Tiger?
Comments
The choice of the two texts is a problem. The two short stories lack complexity and depth to
substantiate a meaningful discussion. The term ‘essence of love’ needs to be defined or narrowed to
particular aspects. The line of argument is weak. The discussion lacks critical insights and
originality and there is a lot of storytelling. Fulfills the task to a very limited extent.
