Comments

This essay made some valid points about the various forms of duty which Walter and Kitty perform

in the film, but wandered off-topic as it focused on Waddington and Mother Superior. The two

characters certainly play an important role in contributing to the reconciliation of Walter and Kitty.

However, in what way is it their ‘duty’ to do so? This was not clarified in the answer.

The candidate demonstrated some knowledge of the texts but fell short in showing convincingly

why Dee (‘Everyday Use’) and the narrator of ‘Cathedral’ are the most irritating characters. Her

argument remains largely undeveloped, and would have greatly benefited from specific examples of

exactly how Dee’s arrogance, her preoccupation with her educational background and the narrator’s

want of insight cause annoyance.

(i) The only difference noted is that (A) is about a sandpiper and (B) is about mushrooms.

Mistakes the actions of the sandpiper as flying.

(ii) Demonstrates a lack of understanding about the effects of imagery. Quotations used are

unnecessarily long and do not really pinpoint specific images.

(iii) Mistakes ‘ly’ and ‘ist’ sounds as assonance. Confusion about ‘similar sentences’ as a poetic

technique. Very weak attempt to support why identified techniques are used.

Comments

The focus of this portfolio is not very clear as it falls between a film review and an analytical essay.

The candidate touches on different aspects of the film like setting, music, camera, and characters,

etc. However, the discussion of these topics lacks originality and critical insights. The candidate

only lists the several places where the film is shot but fails to discuss their significance or how they

are related to the themes or the atmosphere. The same applies to the paragraph on music. It would

be a better discussion if some of the songs or lyrics were analysed so as to show how they reveal the

feelings of the characters or the mood of the movie. The last section on characters is similar in style

to that of study guides. Ideas are repetitive and fail to offer any critical insights. Sketchy

organisation.

The title of the essay should be rephrased as ‘the use of food as symbols’ rather than ‘the language

of food’ in the two films. The candidate did talk about the symbolic meaning of food, like how food

is used to represent love, nostaglic feelings, etc. However, the discussion tends to recount the scenes

in which food is seen rather than giving a more meaningful discussion of the language of food.

Citation of the language of food is missing. The essay also fails to provide sufficient contextual

information for readers to understand how food is meaningful in the context. The style is descriptive

in general.
